Enterprise U.2 8TB drives are cheaper than consumer-grade M.2 models. I don't know why, exactly, but it's consistently true.
Are these the same form factor as M.2 SSDs? They sound like they might be a fantastic option for a solid state. NAS. Posted by: Lost In Space at October 01, 2023 04:17 AM (W028D) 11

They're physically the size of a 2.5" drive, but have an interface that's compatible with M.2. You can buy cheap cables to interface them. Mostly they're used for servers; very few desktop motherboards have U.2 connectors. Posted by: Pixy Misa at October 01, 2023 04:21 AM (BLOW1) 14

Posted by: Pixy Misa After a summer of consistently hundred degree Fahrenheit days Southern New Mexico is finally slipping into lovely days that top out at 90 and drop into 70 in the evening. This is when a lot of big fairs and festivals occur here. From now to the end of the year the weather will slowly cool down until we hit January to February when it drops into the 20s at night and only warms up to about 50. My Verizon 5G home internet, after a week or two of less than stellar up and down speeds has stabilized. I am consistently getting 300 Mbs down and 25 Mbs up even when I have Netflix streaming on a TV and a PC that's interacting heavily with the internet at the time I run the speed test. Of course Verizon has already raised the price for service from $35 a month for 3 years with unlimited data to $45 a month with the same conditions. Over the last 5 weeks I have encountered three times when it buffered for about a minute or so in the middle of the day; I suspect the tower I am hitting which sits at the intersection of two highways was under load and the Verizon software had to rebalance things. Overall, it has been a fantastic home internet service for the money and I can't see any reason why not to recommend it provided it's available to you.

Brisket went in the smoker at 210 degrees at 0430. Installed the new 8 port ethernet switch, doorbell camera and moved the second router in access point mode to the front of the house to give the front security cameras s little bit of stronger WiFi. The other router arrives today, and that will go in the kitchen to get the first floor and smart TV. Should give me good coverage out into the back yard as well. Neighbors come over at 5;30 for supper, so let's see how the brisket goes. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 01, 2023 05:23 AM (1n+EO) 34

Speaking of New Mexican food. I made my first batch of Chile Colarado from scratch about a week ago and it came out quite good. The key thing I learned is how to work with dried chilies and the various varieties of them that are commonly used. Exhausted by that endeavor I went back to my old standby and made a batch of green chili chicken stew which I have perfected over the last 5 years. Next week I'm going after making posole from scratch. I will report back after it is done with graphs and PowerPoints explaining how it came out. LiS that all sounds great. Did you use hominy for your posole?
Posted by: San Franpsycho I haven't yet made the posole and I haven't settled on the exact recipe yet 'm going to use for this first attempt. But yes, it will include hominy. The secret to getting a good posole is getting the right red color out of the chilies, a certain creamy thickness to the chili broth, and that perfect heat. The pork is highly dependent on proper browning and dead fresh spices which are then added to the chiles and allowed to cook down slowly for an hour and a half or so. I don't have a lot of expectations for this first batch; this is more of a process run. The good thing about where I live is the local restaurants here serve the best chili colorado and posole I have ever had anywhere so I at least know what the target is. Anime review time.
The new season has kicked off. First was Frieren now we have on Crunchyroll Shangri-La Frontier. The main character is a high school dude. His hobby is to play trash VR games, the games with bugs that players dump on. We are introduced to him as he defeats this Demon Lord, the blond beautiful female Elf companion starts to praise him and he drives a foot into her face in slow motion. So now his game dealer, I so want to call her a drug dealer because he is addicted to gaming, talks him into playing a 'god-tier' game. So the episode ends with him logging into Shangri-La Frontier and starting to enjoy playing a well crafted game. Posted by: Anna Puma at October 01, 2023 06:55 AM (gVV9B) 142

And then down to where I am in Las Cruces which is at about 4000 ft. The other tilt is towards California with an incline so steep I think we should rename the state New California. There is a big difference between hard sciences, like physics, and the "soft" ones like psychology. Economics is also a soft one. The hard sciences deal with objective, measurable phenomenon. They are getting corrupted more and more by ideology, however. The trouble is the soft sciences like to pretend they are hard. That they are real science, when they are nothing but subjective crap dealing with human feelings and emotions, which ain't objective. We have this lunatic woman in Las Cruces who after driving her donut shop into the ground decided she was going to be a politician. Thus began her serial campaigns to become mayor because the mayor apparently has superpowers to change the laws to suit her grievances. I have spoken with her on a couple of occasions at candidate forums and she's literally the stupidest at least qualified person to run for elected office. When that didn't work out after a couple tries. She decided she was going to run to be the county assessor even though she has never conducted a property assessment, managed the staff of over 100 people, or a budget that runs into the millions. I never thought dhe had a chance to win and then the two other competitors dropped out because of personal scandals and she became the default choice and won. Her promise between the election and her taking office is she was going to take a public administration correspondence course. 2 years later the current mayor has decided to retire and she is once again running for mayor. I am dying to go to a candidate forum and ask her some hard questions publicly.

Slow blink, the affirmative response. That's why you should copy your document, paste it into notepad, close your document and MS award, the open a new document using a new template, copy all from notepad, paste it into your new word file. Save and close. Washes away all of the other people's BS font, setting and other crap that ms word sticks and appends into you existing files. Okay, what is this business about some idiot Democrat pulling a fire alarm in the capitol to stop a vote?
Here is what I think happened: There is an emergency exit door that leads directly to the capitol from the office building. The door has a local alarm on it, such that it sounds until the door closes again. But security still has to go check it every time it opens. Congressmen and staffers used that door all the time as a shortcut to the capitol, who fucking cares that we make security scramble every time. So they lock the door on a time delay. You push the panic bar, and have to stand there for 30 seconds before the door unlocks. Dipshit Bowman thought the alarm box on the wall would override the 30 second lock. He knew it would trigger the alarm for the entire building. He didn't care. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at October 01, 2023 08:38 AM (slgIg) 258

Posted by: Lost In Space They (D) are more open to the fact that almost no senior positions actually require depth of knowledge as those at the working level. For example, Federal DOT probably has a thousand plus licensed engineers on staff which requires years of education, training, and exams to get to. It can be "led" by a person with 'pole smoking' as their skill set. Then we have the VP. Microsoft bundled word with widows and made it the default, and made their .doc format proprietary. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy Chris Peters was the software whiz who jump started Word onto the path to world dominance. After Microsoft stock blew up, he retired and tried to become a professional bowler. When that failed he bought the league IIRC. He and his wife live in SoCal and spend money on Democrats these days. >>It is so clear this morning both Jupiter and Venus are brightly visible.
Venus is so bright, you gotta wear shades. It's past peak Morning Apparition brightness, now, but still spectacular. A couple days ago, Venus was still visible well after sunrise. A treeline blocking the glare from Sol helped. Once Sol is visible in the sky, that just kills everything. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at October 01, 2023 08:49 AM (Mzdiz) 287

There’s currently a shortage of woodland Marine pattern (or MARPAT) uniforms, or “cammies” as Gen. Smith says in the Instagram video. That’s due to a backlog in orders and production caused by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At it's peak WordPerfect had 60% of the market for word processors. In a short time, Word rose to 50%. Windows killed it. They had trouble getting a stable Windows version out, and that's what allowed Word to take over. Bill Gates and MS killed it, really. No, Jamaal says its all good because he didn't know that pulling the fire alarm would set off the fire alarm. Since everyone in his caucus is far too stupid to understand the consequences of their own actions, it's a difficult claim to disprove.
I liked the part where Jamaal claimed that McCarthy was "weaponizing" a "mistake" that Jamaal made by daring to seek out consequences (punishment) for disrupting Congress. In defense of Jamaal (a squad member), he probably saw the Fire Alarm handle, thought it was a magical lever that would read his mind and open the door and nothing else. These people specialize in magical thinking, this is on brand. Posted by: Reuben Hick at October 01, 2023 08:57 AM (p8A+W) 307

In other news to Biden administration is trying to ban conventional gas furnaces and replace them with gas furnaces whose efficiency standards are unicorn level. I'm pretty sure nobody asked for this.
Posted by: Lost In Space at October 01, 2023 05:37 AM ------------------------ That's a bit of an exaggeration. The "unicorn level" gas furnaces (96%+ efficient condensing models) have been readily available for many years. I'm on my second one. But they don't make economic sense in many situations/climates and cost more to install. Not that the government cares about such things.
