First-World Problems...

valve89.jpg

Heating season is upon us here in The People's Republic of New Jersey! Well, to be precise...heating+cooling season, but that's not the point.

The point is that people with steam heat need to do a bit of maintenance every year. Cleaning the burners of accumulated dust and such, making sure the exhaust damper is working, and a few other things. It's not difficult or time-consuming, and it provides a bit of confidence that the system isn't going to fail when it gets really cold.

One other thing to do is to drain the old cruddy water from the system. My boiler has a valve close to the floor, and access to it is of course a bit of a contortionist's act. But all you do is attach a hose to the valve and run it into the sump. Easy-peasy!

So what did I do for more time than I would like to admit? I carefully turned the garden hose female coupler counterclockwise onto the male end of the valve. My first thought was that I had it at the wrong angle, so I tucked up under the maze of the piping into an even more contorted and weird position. Yet even that didn't work! It finally dawned on me that I was using my weak hand at a weird angle, and yup...righty-tighty, lefty-loosy.

Yeah...Ace isn't the only one!

10 I had to send my expensive Swiss-made wristwatch in for service. It's running slow, up to 30 seconds over 24 hours. This is unacceptable. To replace it on my wrist, I got a nice Citizen field watch. I should see my other watch returned to me by Thanksgiving. Mine is a tale of woe. O Chronos, why have you forsaken me?

We had a power outage yesterday. The lights came back on later and this morning I went upstairs to turn my two computers on.

Because they turned off because of an outage, each had to be restarted, then shut down, then restarted again. Took quite a while until they were both back up and running properly.

Then the power went out again.

Ready for another body and soul warming winter of enjoying being toasty warm. Wood shed is full and I am 5+ cords into next year's wood supply. Cleaning the chimney is the only difficult, slightly perilous task. I have a barn roof and the ground is about 18 feet from the lower edge. I think you might want to look at the laws that have been passed in your City/county/State to find the reason for high energy costs in your area.
When you shut down the cheapest sources of power (nuc and hydro) and hobble carbon based fuels the only thing left are enviro-wienie sources.

Based on what I have seen being put into practice in California environs you're totally screwed.

Like installing the new image.

Download Hiren's Boot Disk from the Web, search by that name. It's free. Load it onto thumb drive or DVD, whichever your image is not on. Install the media into your computer, and boot it up. If computer won't boot from that device, you may have to go into BIOS and edit the boot sequence, which is quite easy; just follow on-screen commands that appear during the boot sequence.

Once computer is running on the Boot Disk, you should be able to access a menu that will tell you how to install your image file.

The fan draws air through the house from the outside and vents it into the attic where it displaces the air in that space, forcing it out through the gable vents. If you open the windows in the bedrooms about an inch, the air flowing into the house expands and cools (relatively) and there's discernible movement of air in the entire house.

Right now though it's about 97 outside. In the evenings when the temps drop into the 70s and lower is the ideal time to run the fan.

166 Righty righty-Lefty Loosey when you are all contorted gets difficult. The best way I have found to be sure of which way to turn the nut/coupling is the right hand rule. This works with right hand threads, which most are. If you have left hand threads, use your left hand. Point the thumb of your right hand along the axis of the fitting you want to screw to in the direction that you want the nut(or bolt) to go. The direction that your fingers curl is the correct way to turn the nut(or bolt). This makes it easy to see which way to turn in those difficult positions.

173 One thing I have found is that cracking the windows open in the summer when it is hot actually keeps the house from getting stuffy, and it doesn't really heat up much.
The air is much more "alive"

I have claimed it lets the hot air inside escape and I have no idea if that is anyways close to the truth.

175 This is why in the First World we have apprenticeship programs for the young dorks in society.

I had a 60 year old man torch 3 cooling pumps because he would put superman torque on the outlet casting when he rotated the port. These things are engineered with a simple seal, you don't need to tighten them so tight that the plain, brass, journal bearing is grinding metal.

176 The weather channel is credible?

Weltwoche: The media as the “fourth estate” has a serious credibility problem, not just in the US. Here, it's the same. The only national news organization in the US that scores the majority of the public's trust is, according to YouGov [May 2023], The Weather Channel.
