Gun Thread: Edition After 5th Anniversary Edition!

072423 september calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the edition after the 5th Anniversary Edition?

Programming Note: I am out of town this weekend and won't be around in the comments much. Have a good time and be cool. Regular wacky hijinks will resume next Sunday. Thanks!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

I really enjoyed your article this week on the post liberation Hi-Power. I thought your readers might enjoy seeing a bit newer version I recently acquired. Factory engraved by hand I think and manufactured in 1972. Hasn't been kept as pristine as I would have, but I could not pass it up.

Holy smokes! She's a beauty! Thanks LTL!

Guns Not of The Horde
Our pal WTM shares something I haven't seen before, the Altor Corp 9mm.

wtm 1 092423 scaled.jpeg

Reportedly it can hold a decent group because of the trigger design. Pull the trigger and release to fire, but the lack of decent sights makes me doubt that claim. I can't say I can even dream up a purpose for this thing, but if you wanted a very inexpensive 9mm, this is it!! MSRP $99

Texas MoMe Madness!

092423 hello-moron scaled.jpg

I'd like to remind everyone of the upcoming MoMe in Texas on October 20-21. If you're in either the northern or southern hemisphere of the planet of the earth, contact Ben Had for details. The dates and email links for MoMes are always helpfully included on the main page, left sidebar, so you really have no excuse!

There is an entire shooting program for both handguns and rifles over two days, world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons! More on the Friday/Saturday schedule to come, so stay tuned.

Seriously, people. I have said this probably a hundred times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who regrets having attended one. No kidding. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? MoMe veterans will attest to the funness. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get your ass to Texas! If you're a TXMoMe veteran, please encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun!

TXMoMe Shooting Festivities

092423 texas flag scaled.jpg

This seems like a good time to talk a little bit about the upcoming shooting program at the TXMoMe, or the Conservative's Burning Man, as it's popularly known. What started years ago as an informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full program of shooting activities over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for allowing the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the TXMoMe.

For a while I have been conducting a Rifle Clinic on Friday morning followed by range time Friday afternoon and then again well into Saturday. We have also been steadily refining the handgun portion of the program to now include an IDPA-esque move-and-shoot pistol course designed and run by Nurse R. There is also the usual static pistol range for those who prefer that style of shooting and a separate setup for gun-curious beginners desiring one-on-one supervision and instruction. Lastly and by popular demand, we're hoping to add a gun cleaning and maintenance clinic both days which will run concurrently with the live-fire programs.

Anyhoo, here's a very rough outline of the schedule of events. Times are tentative and subject to modification/change. I'll move this down to the TXMoMe section below in the coming weeks and update as necessary.

Friday, 10/20

Rifle Program
8am - 10am: Rifle Clinic (carport)
10am - 11am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Friday Arrivals! (carport)
11:30am - 1pm: Rifle Clinic, Intro to Wind Estimation (rifle range)
1pm - 4pm: Live fire (rifle range - targets to 1,000 yds)

Handgun Program
10am - 11am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Friday Arrivals! (carport)
11:00am - 12:30pm: Handgun Clinic (carport)
1pm - 2:30pm: Static live fire (pistol range)
1pm - 3pm: A clean gun is a happy gun (carport)
2:30 - 4pm: Briefing and Move & Shoot live fire (pistol range)

Saturday, 10/21

Rifle Program
9am - 10am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Saturday arrivals! (carport)
9am - 1pm: Live fire (rifle range)

Handgun Program
9am - 10am: Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Saturday arrivals! (carport)
10am - Noon: A clean gun is a happy gun (carport)
9am - 1pm: Live fire (pistol range)

Again, these times are approximate and may change as weather conditions and participation warrant.

You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance at one is mandatory. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who plans to shoot to please also plan on attending this important briefing. All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them.

If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, all is not lost. See an RSO to plead your case, be harangued and chastised, and then spend some punishment time on the Disciplinary Range of Shame. In the interests of time, please make it to the scheduled range briefings. Thanks.

Finally, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot. I will bring one of my practice rifles and if you would like to engage our new 1,000 yd target, pick up a box of 175gr. Federal Gold Medal Match in .308 Winchester ammunition.

Call for Volunteers
Help! As I mentioned above, the shooting program in Texas continues to grow, and we wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival, and we'll be in touch. Thank You!

RSOs from prior years: Expect an email from me soon.

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

Cigar of the Week

diogenes 092423 scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes weighs in with this excellent review of the Montecristo Pilotico Why is it so hard to find? Because it's apparently been discontinued. Anyhoo, they're still floating around out there so let's see what Diogenes thinks about it!

I have written before of my Love-Hate relationship with Montecristo cigars. This last Tuesday, whilst skinning the old geezers for $12 on the golf course, I pulled out a Montecristo Pilotico. It was a large ring, 5 1/2-inch stick with a strong start that maintained for the length of the cigar. Not overwhelming but not a cigar I'd recommend for the beginner. Good even burn, nice texture, and a strong cigar aroma with a taste of cinnamon and spice. So, I go to look it up and grab a picture for this review and - nada. Zip. Nothing. Even after looking at the Montecristo site and several of the major suppliers.

Huh!?

So this was either a one-off that got stuck in the sample kit Mrs. D bought me; or, a knock off by some other more nefarious supplier. Either way, I won't be smoking one of these again, and apparently, neither will anyone else. Sometimes this happens.

Mores the pity.

Excellent, Diogenes! Appreciate it!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

WTM, well, your gun pix ain't so pretty but the first rule of gunfights require a pistol so I guess it passes that low bar. Interesting though how many one shot pistols have been invented over the years.

18 That Altor single shot is definitely a unique self-defense handgun. Looks like a modern day take on the Liberator. Self-defense in the sense that popping an occupier in the neck to take their weapon is sef-defense...

22 I was down at the farm most of last week, so I got to shoot for at least an hour and a half on four consecutive days. Kinda wish I hadn't, because I stank on ice. I could not stop jerking the trigger - .22, 9 mil, .45 - it made no difference. I knew I was doing it but could not seem to correct myself. I finally cured it somewhat on the fourth and last session. Oh, well. A bad day at the range is still better than a good day at work.

24 I've seen that Altor advertised a few times over the years. It's definitely a niche weapon. It seems to be designed for California and marketed to the person who thinks they might be attacked by a small, slow horde of one-shot kill baddies.

It's basically a safe version of a zip gun.

26 Sadly, FN USA doesn't offer that kind of custom work on the guns it sells. But I don't think it ever did. I don't think you can get that kind of engraving done at the Liege factory anymore.

Posted by: Ed L at September 24, 2023 07:15 PM (yRXSd)

27 I don't think the Alto gun is suited for self defense. It reminds me of a gun an assassin would use, like the old Liberator .45acp stamped out guns that were given to the French underground during WWII. It was so you could sneak up on a sentry and take his rifle.
Now you have rifle.

28 Pupper should be carrying a Charter Arms .44 Spl. "Bulldog".

Oh, and I'm looking to chase down parts for a build.

Think the loveliest COMMERCIAL '98 Mauser, with polish and bluing as deep as Lake Tahoe. This ain't no mil-surp war-horse.

I'm looking for a STEEL trigger guard/magazine assembly, in the Parker Hale/Interarms MkX pattern, with the floorplate release inside the trigger bow, and not the right side "button" of the later versions (Charles Daly/Remington 79 Same for a bolt-stop/ejector assembly.

And I'll pay good money for 'em, too. This ain't a "beg!"

The Black Walnut Stock (1960s FN Mauser, nearly MINT), is due to arrive here, tomorrow.

Once I've got all the parts to make a rifle, I'll start sending Weasel photo-updates throughout the build. I'll do some work, and top-flight gunsmiths will do their thing, too. Oughta be fun, and hope it turns out as expected!

29 Range report: I decided the stainless Randall I ran across at a local pawn shop needed a home. This last Thursday, I wandered in, paid the tab, wandered out with a fine specimen of the short lived Randal Firearms Company.

I'll send in pics and a range report. Suffice to say, initial tear down indicated the previous owner had ignored one thing which the Randall needed: lubrication. That said, the complete tear down showed no excess wear, etc. In fact, it doesn't appear the gun has been shot all that much. So far, so good.

39 Tupperware 9mm, chamber unloaded. The reason being on my walk to the office at 2-3AM practically every house has some kind of Ring or Wyze camera; there is nobody out there (except sketchy types) and it's pretty simple to be situationally aware and spot 'issues' from a time/space distance.
On camera footage my opinion is that the optics of not having a round in the chamber indicates not being 'trigger happy': it takes a deliberate, visible act of preparing to meet an obvious threat. It's also my firm opinion that if something looks bad at that hour it almost assuredly is, and I am a fool to have that gun anywhere but out and in my hand.

49 Evening all.

I'm working on, well the roof and getting my cannon project set up in the lathe I found a couple of years ago. I work pretty slow.
This one is going to be a Napoleon. 3/4 inch bore. 12" tube length. So when finished it will be about 27 inchs long with 10 inch wheels.
Need some carbide inserts before I start cutting though.
Been planning this for years. Sort of a dry run on another I want to do. The Fremont Cannon in about 1/4 scale. A Mountain Howitzer still lost to history, along with about 400 others that disappeared while taming the west.

55 BTW, all my self defense guns have one in the pipe. Back in the day when I used revolvers for home protection, it is downright dumb to leave a chamber empty on a six shot double action revolver. Don't have single action revolvers around for a reason, you build muscle memory wrong for shooting double action all the time.

That is one of the reasons I went back to third generation Smiths in DAO just recently. The triggers are almost identical in weight and feel to that of a tuned double action revolver plus having a hammer helps in reholstering.

58 Actual scenario, this is one of them: Male figure walking towards me on the sidewalk at 2AM. I sensibly cross the street to the opposite sidewalk. Man crosses as well to meet me. What kind of idiot does that? I visibly remove gun from holster and hold it down along my leg.

Man crosses back over and continues on his way. I re-holster gun and go to the office and get some work done. Round not chambered. If he had continued toward me a second time I would have crossed again and chambered a round. Unholstering was the sensible thing to do, and nothing happened.

62 As to Lurker's Hi-Power.

Does anyone know if there are any LEGAL forms of "Ivory" available for import? Walrus? Elephant Seal?

On Elephant Ivory, the outer part of the material is known as "Bark Ivory", and it's every bit as varied as any variety of trees you might imagine. Different patterns and colors in an infinite array.

Leave the "core" (white) Ivory to the pianos. Bark Ivory is where it's at for Knife handles and especially the blank slabs from which to fashion grips for that lovely Hi-Power.

But, it's gonna have to be LEGAL ivory. Which rules out Anthony Robbins' teeth, even though they appear big enough.

93 On the one-in-the-chamber video, Ayoob's point about shaky hands is spot-on. If you shake when you rack the slide, it is very easy to get a half-closed-half-loaded-totally-f'ed-up condition.

Also, somewhere somewhat recently, his info on one-handed shooting by cops was laid out. (I found it in relation to that robber who was caught because all his cop buddies recognized his weird stance.) LOTS of one-handed incidents and off-hand incidents. (Also, lots of indicators for why you should learn the "combat retention position" and be able to shoot from there.)

As I understand it, if a critter is an endangered species, the answer is no. So that limits you to the bone of non-endangered species (EX: giraffe bone) or extinct animals (mammoth ivory). That said, it's probably far easier to get what you're looking for from a domestic source rather than fight the combined bureaucracies of the State Department, EPA, and the Customs Service.

Posted by: Notorious BFD at September 24, 2023 07:43 PM (V8he0)

107 Actual experience: Practice here is for miscreants to clock people in cars, boil out, rob, then flee in the car. At 2AM car passes me; comes back, passes again; the third time I stand behind a large tree, unholster gun, chamber a round where they can see me do it.

Car speeds away. Reholster gun, go to office, get work done. Now, this was an innocuous event, nothing happened. The only variable with not having a round in the chamber is if for whatever reason (mistaken identity is a very real possibility) they might have started firing from the car with no intent to exit and rob. Which is why I do the 9mm with FMJ and try to have a large tree with me at all times. This 'encounter' was 99% likely on someone's house cam.

Too many "cowboys" among the REMFs had negligent discharges at the clearing barrels. 131 Again, for me, the 'encounters' I've had (2-3 a year, usually) are 99.9% on at least one house cam and likely several. So my opinion, solely in my specific circumstances, footage will show me making every effort on foot to avoid any conflict, retreat, crossing the street, changing my route, even backtracking, etc. And the gun only comes out when it gets too close and at that point, again, 99.9% on-camera, the round goes in with the gun held pointed at the ground.

I've not yet had the 'BUT WHAT IF-' split-second thing. It has not happened. It could, yes. But so far no. And, important point, it's normally at 2-3AM! Who is out there and what are they doing? 135 Nurse, it is not racking the slide that's a problem, it is holding it to lock it. my hands are so small, it is hard to reach the locking button and hold the slide in place. The G48 has the smallest grip so now have to see if I can do it on G44 which has a lsightly larger one. The 1911 is easier because it has a sight which gives me more leverage when racking it. I just haven't has the nerve to take it apart yet.

Sharon, I've seen gun mats at the Chantilly show that had exploded views of various firearms with all their parts showing on how they all got put together. 1911s were among them. Perhaps that might help you figure out what part goes where and not misplace anything.

139 As to the creative DA "round in the chamber" premeditation question, it doesn't work that way. Where or not one will be charged is pretty much at the discretion of the DA.

That said, if one has a CCW, one thing which will get one in trouble, I believe, is inconsistent carrying of personal defense weapon. "Oh, you just happened to be carrying? Why, where you looking for trouble?"

Whereas, consistent carry is going to be less of red flag. Again, the DA in your jurisdiction may charge you, no matter what.

There is also the issue of the *other guy*. There have been several cases around me of people carrying replicas, airguns, or non-guns and using them to display in robberies. The act of placing a round in the chamber can act as a notice it's not a 'fake gun'.

And anyway, if you have to shoot someone, especially off your private property, it's totally a lose-lose situation under ANY circumstances. Expect charges and be ready with some persuasive answers. I emphasize, it's purely my personal choice in my purely personal situation/circumstances. Round not chambered. You do you.

195 Are you carrying it in your hand as you walk along the street?'

Yes. If it looks hinky it assuredly is and there is no way I'm walking into something ugly playing fast-draw. Holding a pistol discreetly out and down along your leg pointed at the ground is not 'brandishing'. And no, actually. If it looks ugly/hinky I am stopped and seeking the above-mentioned large tree. So yes and no: gun out, pointed down, stopped, waiting to see what this other person has on their mind. Again, not-terrific area, 2-3AM.
And cameras now are a lot better than they used to be.
Look, if you think this is all stupid and I'm an idiot, sure, fine, but still it's what I choose to do, over a number of years of carrying guns in not-terrific places around not-terrific people.

I have TONS of encounters with people at unGodly hours that are not at all serious! Drunks staggering home, derelicts riding bicycles, kids out fooling around, none of that involves a gun. It's the relatively rare occasion where it just stinks, doesn't look good, something-is-not-right situations where I do this. You do get a 'feel' for when something just isn't right and is about to turn ugly.

196 I think the Detroit cop who shot him self in the foot in front of a class room full of kids while talking about gun safety is an all time classic.

204 Thanks for the Shuttle landing video, Weasel. Brings back memories. Here's a another landing video with a view from the side in the final stage

https://tinyurl.com/593xxsv6

As you see the Orbiter (NASA name for the spaceplane component of the Space Shuttle System) flies like a brick. From 86,000 feet altitude to to main gear touchdown is 6.5 minutes in this video clip. The Orbiter's glide ratio was 4.5. One foot down for every 4.5 feet forward. A typical glider has a glide ratio of 70; the Boeing 767's glide ratio is 12. Nominal Orbiter landing speed was about 215 mph.

The mission commanders, only, manually flew each landing beginning around 40,000 feet altitude. The commanders were highly competitive about making touchdown as close as possible to the target distance from the beginning of the runway (usually 2500 feet) and the target sink rate, along with the smallest drift rate and smallest distance from the runway centerline.

207 My most confident carry combination is my EMP Ronin, cocked and locked, in its pocket holster in a vest I purchased for cc. It is a cross body draw, which I practice (with the pistol unloaded) in front of the mirror. I've also had the chance to draw and shoot in the woods. Problem is, it takes two hands to unzip and then draw. So, not having one in the chamber would be way too slow.

I don't carry one in the chamber with my PPQ. I don't trust the trigger safety.

213 Because there's overlap and some people might be interested, I'm reposting this from the hobby thread:

I shoot a recurve bow exclusively. My kids outgrew the one they were using and I kept threatening to get them a compound, and after reading a lot of side by side comparisons and watching a lot of youtube reviews I broke down and got one of the $200 Dragon X8 models.

https://tinyurl.com/24jgmofm

It is absolutely fantastic, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is compound-curious. Fully adjustable between something silly like 5lbs and up to 70, so it's a viable choice for kids, women, or grown men.

We've been outside without griping or complaining (well, except for the "it's myyyy tuuurrrrnnn" type) for an hour or so every day since we got it, and that alone has been worth the price.

Highly recommended.

It's one reason I would love to get a Beretta M9. I know there are other pistols that work this way, but I carried that one, so I know it. It's the DA/SA with decocker. AND a safety (which is also the decocker.) It gives you options.

The Beretta 92 is a fine gun but you do have to have fairly large hands to get the most out of it. Not really a good one for concealed carry due to size but Beretta makes others using the same design that are smaller.

I never could shoot one worth a flip after the AF switched me over from the M. 15 Smith and Wesson revolver. That fit my hand, the Beretta did not.

Sharon, also look into an extended slide release. I found the 1911 release to be just far enough forward I had to shift my grip if I wanted to release it. And I found it makes it much easier to lock the slide, too - again you don't have to really shift your hand to make it happen.

I'm positive you've seen it on my carry 1911 and my .45.

I'm guessing Kimber would galdly put one on for you. Or you can look at the various gun parts places and install it yourself (it's WAY easy - you take that piece out first as part of your normal field strip for cleaning). It's a <$30 part, IIRC.

Also, during the day, if I'm carrying it's a J-frame S&W, it's in a OWB holster, and most certainly 'has one in the chamber'. But that's during the day when there are (decent) people, and police, and stuff like that. At night where I am it's a zoo, pure and simple, and no police that might be of any immediate use.

Magazines are and should be considered consumables. Because they do get damaged over time and it is not worth an unreliable mag being shuffled into your carry gun rotation.

You have to make the exception for rare or collectible handguns but most people never carry them either.

M1 Carbine mags are notorious for being flimsy and disposable. In that case, the Korean ones are actually a bit better than WWII era mags. Save those as collectibles.

Eh, modern pistols have better takedowns nowadays and some match 1911's are tight enough you need a bushing wrench to break them down.

I am getting reacquainted with Smith's Third Generation takedown and it is an awkward operation when compared with plastic fantastics.

I use the Brownell videos, recommended by someone here, and they're pretty good. I don't take out the firing pin as they show in the video. But I also had to look up some diagrams because I was confused about what the disassembly notch was. I find it very tricky to get the slide stop back in. But I haven't launched the spring into the ceiling.... yet.

Not much reason to if you use decent ammo. One of the reasons I used Hodgdon's Universal when I was doing reloading a lot for handguns was that it shot clean without much of the nasty carbon buildup. For whatever reason, the powder flakes are not coated in graphite like most powders use plus it burns pretty fast and clean as a shotgun powder.

I only detail strip when I am replacing springs and such or when I acquire a new used firearm and am checking for parts breakage/wear.

I can see that would be a nasty one. I did breakdowns of 1917 rifles and P14 bolts back when I restored a few.

Unfortunately, the Brits must not have paid Mauser for the m98 bolt takedown and on the first one I bought, they had put the abominable Dayton Traister cock on opening kit on that 1917. That bolt was hard as hell to take down and I had to drive the firing pin down through several levels of plywood to dismount the cocking piece.

Later I made a bolt takedown tool and now use a nicer one.

One reason a lot of folks stayed with hammer fired rather than striker fired for a long time. When reholstering a hammer fired (revolver or semi-auto but NOT a single action type) you learn to hold your thumb over the hammer so it cannot cock itself on the way into the holster.

Easy to remember too, no cock, no bang.

A couple years back I got some stripped lowers, cheap. Joked about getting a six pack but thought it might raise a flag.
Anyway, got the 'oops kit' same time I go a lower build kit from PSA.
Didn't need it the first build, but on the second. Damn those little detent springs and plunger that need to be held down with an x-acto knife while you slip the next part in... didn't even bother looking for them. BEcause I had the spares.

Posted by: BifBewalski at September 24, 2023 09:10 PM (us8PW)

If I have to actually carry my AR? There's gonna be a round in the chamber. But usually I'm transporting my AR, so no round in the chamber until I'm ready to shoot. If I'm carrying it, it's because there's some very bad s*** already going down.

It takes eternity to undo a mistake.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at September 24, 2023 09:32 PM (XtkZj)

358 But I have actually found a lot of finishing nails pretty handy as slave pins to be driven out. They go in pretty easier and allow some adjustments if sized just a bit smaller than the hole.

Another tip is use bamboo bbq skewers as cleaning picks, they can also serve as stock reinforcing or repair pins as bamboo is incredibly tough when glued in with resin. Easier to dress the hole than using brass pins.

I use a lot of cotton swabs, patches, and bamboo skewers for detail cleaning. If needs must, I used specific dental cleaning picks to get really tough crap out of receiver nooks, etc.

The 98 Mauser bolt takedown is civilized as you get to unscrew it from the bolt prior to removing the cocking pin. The older Mausers and the P14/1917 suck as you need a couple of hands to do it without a vise.

45 ACP is one of the most forgiving cartridges to reload and cases last forever if you don't load really hot. Shoots coated or lubed lead bullets quite well too.

It was the second cartridge I learned to reload and if you are really cheap, one lb of Bullseye powder can make a bunch of 45 ACP ammo. I never used it because it is easy to double charge using that powder. But a lot of other powders work just fine with the 45. It is as easy as loading 38 Special.

(in case ya didn't know, the various Mauser '98 receiver bits, such as the trigger sear down in the 3rd lug raceway, the bold stop & ejector, all work TOGETHER, in synch, to make the finest Controlled Round Feeding mechanism ever made, dance it's proper ballet.

378 Anyway the 'one-in-the-pipe-or-not' thing isn't, for me, a matter of gun safety but my subjective perception of optics on camera footage. And (I've seen that Ayoob video before), you would be shocked (or maybe not) at how many non-gunowners truly believe, still, that guns can and will go off if you drop them. So his point 'that doesn't happen anymore' carries no weight when you have, say, a jury, which knows absolutely nothing about guns except what they see on TV, watching camera footage of you handling a firearm.
You're being judged by people who very likely believe Alec Baldwin's gun 'went off by itself' and that all guns fire if dropped. For me it's about optics. A few other concerns but optics above all.

382 Two times I have picked up an unloaded gun in my house and found a round in the chamber. I have been shooting for over 70 years, I am an old man and I always assume every gun is loaded and clear the chamber when I pick the gun up. Every time.

When I was in high school in the 1950's a friend of mine had beeb out shooting a German Luger which had mal-functioned on him. As he was riding down mainstreet with his buddies he started screwing around with the pistol and put a bullet in his head. I was a most sad time for a family of five kids to lose their oldest son.

I am an NRA range officer and every firearm is considered loaded and dangerous. Never screw around with guns.
