There were still many transatlantic ships docking at the various piers-Holland-America Line, Norwegian America Line, Swedish America Line, Italian Line had beautiful ships, it was a different world. Boeing 707s dealt a death blow to these ships. Both of my parents emigrated to US from Norway around 1950 separately on Norwegian America Line. There were more than 60,000 Norwegians in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Another big enclave of Norse in Washington Heights, Manhattan. All gone now.

I haven't been to the deep south or the Upper Midwest or most of New England, though. And Delaware. 243 When I was in jr. high, one of my teachers said that the term "port" came from the fact that early ships always docked with that side tied up to the wharf. Is that true? If so, why? Seems kind of weird. If you approached the dock with it on your starboard side, you'd have to put he helm over and tack and all that other maritime terminology to get the port side of your ship next to the dock.

Also, it's kind of critical on a boat to know that port is to your left only if you happen to be facing forward. If you're facing astern and the captain shouts something like "torpedo to port" you'd better not run the wrong way.

Use: Port wine is RED and if I had any there would only be a little bit LEFT.

Using the above you don't have to know the direction of travel; but, after using it you know the direction.

302 The criticism of mnemonic devices is well taken, but I've known people who as adults still confuse "left" and "right." So I came up with that mnemonic device I described above to help them out. Just so happens that it also works for "port" and "starboard."

I sometimes get "east" and "west" confused. Unfortunately, that mnemonic device does not work for those directions, since "e" comes before "w" in the alphabet. So I'll have to come up with something else for that.

True. But people who confuse the cardinal directions won't know what a compass rose is anyway.

My last four cars have all had a compass readout in the instrument panel or the rear-view mirror. I wouldn't have paid extra for such a feature -- but now I rely on the readout.
