Yeah, I remember the views of all the great ships from West Street or the West Side Highway in 1960 or so. There were still many transatlantic ships docking at the various piers-Holland-America Line, Norwegian America Line, Swedish America Line, Italian Line had beautiful ships, it was a different world. Boeing 707s dealt a death blow to these ships. Both of my parents emigrated to US from Norway around 1950 separately on Norwegian America Line. There were more than 60,000 Norwegians in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Another big enclave of Norse in Washington Heights, Manhattan. All gone now.

When I was in jr. high, one of my teachers said that the term "port" came from the fact that early ships always docked with that side tied up to the wharf. Is that true? If so, why? Seems kind of weird. If you approached the dock with it on your starboard side, you'd have to put he helm over and tack and all that other maritime terminology to get the port side of your ship next to the dock.

DV Journal, yesterday:
Delaware Valley (Pennsylvania) Democrats rejected a bipartisan bill hitting the brakes on banning gas-powered cars. When the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchasing Act (H.R. 145) came up for a vote in Congress last week, all three Democrats in the local delegation — Reps. Madeleine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan, and Mary Gay Scanlon — voted against it. The measure protects consumers from state government bans on buying cars powered by internal combustion engines. Bucks County Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick joined his fellow Republicans, along with eight Democrats, in passing the bill with a 220-190 vote. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can grant waivers to states to pursue more stringent clean car rules than the federal government. The state action at issue is California’s Advanced Clean Cars II rule, which states, “By 2035, all new passenger cars, trucks and SUVs sold in California will be zero emissions.” Posted by: L - Practice makes perfect. The criticism of mnemonic devices is well taken, but I've known people who as adults still confuse "left" and "right." So I came up with that mnemonic device I described above to help them out. Just so happens that it also works for "port" and "starboard."
I sometimes get "east" and "west" confused. Unfortunately, that mnemonic device does not work for those directions, since "e" comes before "w" in the alphabet. So I'll have to come up with something else for that. My last four cars have all had a compass readout in the instrument panel or the rear-view mirror. I wouldn't have paid extra for such a feature -- but now I rely on the readout.

I love that the Florida Seminole tribe has told these nutty groups to buzz off. They like Florida State s name, mascot, and traditions and the financial partnership they have with FSU.

I never got the personal Jesus thing. Isn't part of the point that ... he is everyone's Jesus? And also God. So, if Christ was anyone's personal Jesus, it would be God.
Of course, you could also say that I am God's personal Aetius451AD. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at September 26, 2023 10:57 AM (RMS9n) Well - I was thinking of the Depeche Mode song. But since you brought it up -- it took me a long time to realize that Jesus wants a personal relationship with each of us. He's there for all of us, but it HAS to be a personal choice to accept Him and the salvation that only He can provide. Posted by: Doof at September 26, 2023 10:59 AM (cRUf9) 404
