Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | There Is Lots Of Joy In Mudville, For ONT, Mighty ONT, Has Come OutHi everyone! Time for Thursday's ONT! Let the festivities begin! ![]() City Living The death of the great American cityUntil recently, cities like London, New York, San Francisco and Chicago seemed to be on the up. They were widely hailed by academic researchers as presaging a high-tech economic future. Urban advocates like former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg described the city as ‘a luxury product’, designed around the needs of wealthy elites and professionals. Some even imagined a world controlled by these cities and their mayors. Yet reality was undermining the great ‘urban renaissance’ even before the pandemic. Office occupancy has actually been declining since 2000. By 2019, the construction of new office space had dropped to one third of the rate of 1985 and half that of 2000. Meanwhile, wealth and educated people continued to shift to the periphery.Yes, all of this is happening, and the article talks about how the pandemic accelerated the process, but other than two sentences that mention the riots after the death of George Floyd, it misses what I think was the real reason cities started to lose population, and the reason they won't get it back: After decades of one party rule, most cities have descended into such an utter morass of filth, crime and violence that nobody has any reason to WANT to come back. What do cities even offer anymore? Last time I visited Baltimore, I remember thinking “Was it always this dirty and I just didn't notice?” (Answer: No) My head was on a swivel at all times looking for gangs and other criminals. Harborplace, the 1980s era inner harbor renovation that started the downtown renaissance and served as a model for other similar cities across the nation, is empty. No, really, it's EMPTY EMPTY. So those of y'all that still live in or around big cities, what does the city offer you that you can't get elsewhere? Major league sports teams? The only time I go to center city Dallas is to watch a Flames/Stars game (and Dallas is still pretty nice down there). I'd really be curious to know, because if y'all don't come up with anything substantial, I'm having a hard time seeing how cities can come back from this. Today's Tip: How To Sit In A Chair — ONT WTF (@OntWtf) August 25, 2023 Tonight's Question
1: No person may serve more than 12 years total in Congress 2: Congress may never exempt themselves or any government employees from any laws 3: Congress may pass no bill longer than 4500 words 4: Regulations may be proposed by departments, but each must be voted on by Congress (subject to #3) before they take effect 5: Ditch the preamble to the 2A 6: Spend more time on Article III. Role of courts must be more strictly defined and limited to prevent them from becoming defacto legislators. 7: Requirement that every 5th Amendment must be a word for word copy of the 10th 8: Make sure that to include language that precludes the 16th or 17th from being adopted. (Possibly impossible, but the attempt should be made) What have you got, Horde? I'd argue that the Bidens' approach to tax law is a *symptom* of the problem, rather than a leading cause.
Now that the government has completely destroyed any need for collecting revenue by just printing up money on demand, there is NO REASON for any citizen to contribute money to the government coffers. I went to NYC a few times in the early 2010s, it was kind of nice then. No way I'd go there now.
My assessment is that while paying donkey games and winning donkey prizes set the stage for the great urban emigration, the Branch Covidian cult was in fact the thing that put them down. Yuppie types tolerated the high taxes, crime, etc. because of "the scene" and all the clubs, restaurants, theaters and such that gave them both after work entertainment and spiritual fulfillment. But all that went away in 2020 and no rational person thinks Comrade Mayor is giving up its newfound power voluntarily, so the balance swung strongly negative and those with means responded accordingly. Detroit, where my parents were born and raised, might not be ENTIRELY due to Democrat rule. It was basically a one industry town (my grandfather worked for Chrysler). Even though I was raised just north of Detroit, we still went into the city for a lot of things: the sports teams were all there, major department stores (I still miss JL Hudson) my grandparents, my church, etc. Then came the riots in the late 60's, and then Coleman Young, who was a Democrat and an execrable mayor for twenty years.

Posted by: OrangeEnt at August 24, 2023 10:15 PM (Angsy) Try plugging it into one of the other outlets protected by the GFCI. If that doesn't trip the GFCI, then I would guess that the physical socket part of the GFCI is bad. If it does trip the GFCI, try plugging it into a different GFCI outlet. If it trips there, then maybe the toaster oven has a ground fault in it. If it doesn't trip, then your first GFCI is bad. IIRC, toaster ovens have exposed element wires that could become bridged by hunks of carbonized food. A ground fault would not be surprising at all. Cities are collapsing for all of the stated reasons, when you said that Baltimore looked "dirty" is because that is the only direction it can head. Governments don't shrink, they add staff and drop accountability due to the large number of faceless drones who unions keep from being fired. That means that the infrastructure crumbles. Water, gas and sewer pipes don't last forever and may only be worked on at the point of failure; so its one outage and right-of-way construction zone after another. Immigrants backfill the condos and apartments that are on their fifth or more decade of existence. The bones are old and dried and its plumbing and electrical is worn and outdated. Pools aren't maintained, the irrigation system leaks, parking lots crumble and those with means go move out to the exurbs for the new home warranties, the fresh schools, modern hospitals with top notch medical staff, green spaces, reliable utilities, level pavement, nascent government and absence of barbarians. Does the toaster oven work when plugged into an entirely different receptacle on a different circuit? Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at August 24, 2023 10:28 PM (5kdlS) 79
45 Hmm, let's see. Jim's here and AoP is here. Let's get right to the electrical problem.
Half the kitchen wall plugs are on one circuit and half on another. When I plug in a toaster oven into the gfci outlet, it trips. Not turning it on, just plugging it in. Five outlets go dead, and the only other item plugged in is a wall phone/answering machine. Need new gfci outlet, or maybe something's wrong with the circuit? Nothing tripped on the outside panel. Posted by: OrangeEnt at August 24, 2023 10:15 PM (Angsy) I'm neither Jim nor AoP, but I'll jump in. If it only trips with the toaster oven, I'd suspect a problem with the oven. GFIs trip when there's an current imbalance between the hot and neutral, which indicates an unintended current path to ground. Have you tried the oven on a different GFI protected circuit? Does it trip there? Not to disparage your housekeeping skills, but if the toaster oven has food residue splattered inside that might be creating a path for current to ground and causing the GFI to trip. It doesn't take much current imbalance to trip, only a few milliamps. The idea is that the GFI will trip on less current than it takes to stop your heart. Posted by: a.moron at August 24, 2023 10:29 PM (F6Xpw) 80
first GFCI is bad.
IIRC, toaster ovens have exposed element wires that could become bridged by hunks of carbonized food. A ground fault would not be surprising at all. Try plugging it into one of the other outlets protected by the GFCI. My moment of clarity was 2012. In 2008 Republicans voters demanded someone who would stop illegal immigration. The GOPe offered Juan McVain. And I voted for him. But then come 2012 Republican voters demanded someone that would get rid of Obamacare and the GOPe offered up...Mittens Romneycare. And then I thought back prior to McVain. I left Seattle 6 years ago for La Cruces, NM because my forever city had become unlivable because of the the near monolithic Soviet left wing mindset amongst the population, the wildly out of control homeless industrial nexus, the increasingly lawless state of the city, and the untenable cost of living. Six years on I have zero interest in major cities now; essentially Las Cruces has everything I need and most everything I want. For the things that it can't supply I order over the internet and for the in person things I value such as concerts I seek them out in secondary cities no bigger than 250,000 population for the most part. It is the exception that I venture to a major metropolitan area for anything anymore such as a Joe Bonamassa concert this summer at Red Rocks in Denver precisely because there's only one Red Rocks on the planet. As for living, I own a home with an outstanding mortgage less than the price of the new car that I could pay off tomorrow if I wish: all my hard costs that include all the living related expenses and groceries is less than $2,000 per month. I want for nothing and effectively have everything. Big cities are dead to me.

The biggest war proponent in 2003. More then Shrub. More then Cheney was...John Edwards. Who would be the D VP in 2004. Hillary was a pretty major proponent as well. Hell, Kerry did NOT even run as a real anti-war candidate even in 2004. He flipped and flopped and never gave an answer as to what he would do if elected president. A lot of the tweaks above make sense. For me the two biggies are - voting. one day, in person, with ID - LOCAL LOCAL LOCAL. I am not sure how to implement this, but revenue and laws have to be as local as possible. Make each sate, city, county, school district, independent. Independent control over laws and funding with only exception being those things which are naturally of a larger order, like national defense. A lot of good suggestions for the 3x5 card.
I'd add: 1) In addition to Marx, Engles, Mao, Hitler, Stalin, and Lenin, kill Woody Wilson if he decides to run for office. 2) If any regulation is published by a federal agency that differs by so much as a single typo from a law enacted by Congress, then only a single state objecting is enough to strike that regulation from the C.F.R., and if a regulation that has been enacted and is listed in the C.F.R. correctly without any typos, a simple majority of states can have it struck from the C.F.R. No employee of the federal gov't is permitted to vote except for members of the armed forces. Term limit on federal employment of 10 years. Constitutional amendments only by 2/3 affirmative vote of State legislatures. Congress has no role in approving amendments. No family member within 3 generations of a person who was federally elected or appointed to a post that required Congressional approval can be employed by federal gov't or elected or appointed to a federal position, or act as a federal contractor. Define family very, very broadly (parent, sibling, aunts, uncles, cousins, whether by blood or marriage or adoption). Posted by: Kreskin at August 24, 2023 11:05 PM (xP8Wr) 191

Cutting lasers like that are focused such that the beam tapers down to a *very* small cross-section a little bit away from the laser unit and then spreads out pretty fast on the back side of the focus zone. Giant laser cutter, basically; I have one of the 40W hobby cutters and the beam is already like an inch wide if I back the cutting head a few inches away from the material. Some guys with diodes will check the squareness by pointing it across the room so they can see in detail what the edge looks like. That said, it's definitely the sort of thing that I could see the stereotypical "idiots with chainsaws" tree trimming company totally screwing up. Slightly more House members, or get really weird, and do two members from each district elected for four year terms staggered two years apart. Voters might be willing to ticket split and switch parties in those elections more often. Maybe do a third senator for each state so there's one up for election every two years too. Secondary consequence is an expanded Electoral College where small-to-medium-small states have a little more weight in the overall count.
Maybe give state governors some backstop role in federal lawmaking; last resort ability to veto laws with a supermajority; mostly ceremonial power, but worthwhile in emergencies. Posted by: Walter Freeman at August 24, 2023 11:44 PM (k1Qly) 274

Braking up states would solve a lot of problems. 1/4 to 1/3 if the country lives in deep red or deep blue states, but is liberal/conservative. Which means 1/4 to 1/3 of the population has no say in politics.
You could break up Texas into 2 And give Austin its own state. In ez CNN ange Eastern Washington becomes its own state. The do the same with upstate NY as a state and Miami as a state. And so on. Balance of power stays the same at the federal level but at the local level everyone gets the laws they want and not subject to a majority it opposes fully. Completely off topic(s), so I apologize in advance.
If you ever get tired of Christians citing verses and sharing their message, I hope you'll consider this for a second, as I know we seem like we are droning on and on. If you personally witnessed someone die, and then a person came by days, months even years later and brought them back to life, would you tell anyone? Would you tell everyone? If you had a friend who was dying, would you tell them about the man who raises the dead to life or would you just keep it to yourself? Christ literally did this with Lazarus, Jairus' daughter and the widow's son. His disciples who witnessed this were awed that this man can raise the dead to life and controls death, and shared it far and wide. To the modern Christian, we recognize that we have witnessed this miracle, in ourselves and others. We have come to understand that we are dead and with no hope, and we have seen the power of Christ to resurrect us to life. It's not any less miraculous that broken, dead, and lifeless bodies (that may still twitch with the appearance of life but are in fact dead) have been raised anew. And we can't help but tell others. We stand amazed. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at August 24, 2023 11:50 PM (IAwid) Posted by: MiklosTalks at August 24, 2023 11:51 PM (WVRZF) 284

USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is in dock to have its functional 155mm Advanced Gun Systems stripped out to make way for four 87-inch missile tubes which will hold three Common Hypersonic Glide Bodies hypersonic missiles.
The only hitch in this plan is that the C-HGB missiles haven't been fielded for both scientific and policy reasons. So not only is this destroyer seven years late and 50% over budget, not only can it not survive navigating the Panama Canal, it will now be declawed and have empty missile tubes as it awaits missiles that don't exist. The system itself was setup pretty well, but it has been eroded by chipping away at the pillars or foundation. Phony baloney currency. Direct election of Senators, etc.
“One man one vote” Supreme court decision took away the state electoral system that functioned similar to the EC nationally. The idea was to prevent a large city from dominating the politics of the rest of the state. That decision was in the 1960s, I think. It took a while, the effect was slow, but it was sure. Now many states are effectively fooked. Oregon and Washington are good examples. Posted by: Common Tater at August 25, 2023 12:35 AM (NuL5H) 334

I think impeachment ought to be a regular occurance. Or at least it should have been up until now. By that I mean goofball judges. Congress hasn’t been doing their job for decades now. If they ever did, I dunno. All of the feedback mechanisms, the controls are severed. The switches and buttons don’t do anything. Up until fairly recently we at least had the illusion of public participation, albeit manufactured consent. The rubes (eventually) caught on to that. Here's a wild one for the index card that actually goes against my general beliefs, and I haven't quite figured out how to handle primaries, or how to exclude someone from running for president as the nominee of the We Love Cats party:
The federal government will give each candidate for a federal office a war chest for their campaign. No monies outside of the war chest may be collected or spent. No third party expenditures are allowed. Any leftover is returned to the treasury. Say (in today's money) a billion for each Presidential candidate, 100 mil for each senate candidate and 10 mil per house candidate. In a 2 party system that's about 20 billion. A pittance for the government. Hell, even with 2 legit 3rd party candidates in each race it's still only 40 billion. The trick would be defining "legit". As I said, against my general principles, but damned if it doesn't sound better than what we have now. I got interested in something else, but I did look up the electrical box fill rules. They've changed a bit, just a bit, from what I remember back in the day. Basically, each conductor coming into a box that is "cut", that is will be spliced to another or connected to a device counts as a unit. #14 counts as 2 cu in per. #12 is 2.25 cu in per, and #10 is 2.5 cu in. Each gang device counts as 2 of the largest size conductor to be connected to it. Thus a receptacle receiving #12 wire would count as 2*2.25 = 4.5 cu in. Now, bare ground wires, all of them count as one of the largest size. Internal wire clamps (like on some metallic and plastic boxes) count as one of the largest conductor entering. Now, conductors that go straight through count as just 1 of each. Unless there is more than 12". There's an old rule, 6" of wire inside the box. So that's twice that for a through, non-cut, pass through. Jumper wires, pigtails, don't count, provided they aren't too long. Sometimes when your sight returns, you'll get another "shock" as it were. Case in point. It would take 3 posts to fully describe the situation, but short version, I made a "questionable connection" of a circuit with a 5HP motor trying to start. Big arc flash of the starting current of that motor, which couldn't start, cause it had a big ol' arc in series, which my "questionable" drop cord connection had triggered. I feel my hand burning a bit. That arc blows out quickly. I'm blind. I stay put. When my sight returns, I look down and see my left hand is black. OMG, I'm burned bad! Nope, just soot from the arc blowing burning plastic and shit. Wiped right off. A little sunburned, but no serious burn. One does make a "questionable" connection to a motor that will try to start once voltage is applied. Well, a big motor that is going to draw a YUGE starting current. That was the lesson I learned that day. Make damn sure that motor ain't trying to start. It was an air compressor that was being moved to where it needed to be temporarily, and I was rigging a big drop cord for it. A similar thing can happen with cord and plug to receptacle connections. Most 120V shit ain't gonna pull enough to do this, but some 240V shit can. You need to make that connection quick. If you don't, you get a big ol' arc started right quick. --------- Not the worst part, but the most humiliating, on those few occasions where I made a 'mistake', there were witnesses. Some people who call themselves my 'friends', to this day will, under the influence of a few beers, recall those incidents. Yes, after it's over, one looks around to see if there were any witnesses. If there aren't there's a sense of relief. Now, if one works for Mrs. Duke as a lineman, and I assume most of the others. Well, this type of thing is called a "splash" in the lingo. And it sort of is. Makes a splash of molten metal. Anytime one triggers a splash, one has to write up a "Splash Report", describing what happened. Any witnesses have to write up their own report. Failure to do a splash report is firing-on-the-spot offense. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at August 25, 2023 02:59 AM (Mzdiz) 405

1.no one can serve more than 12 years in Congress, eh? That’s what you would tell the Framers?
Republics with democratic institutions are not for the lazy, yet Americans are lazy, and they ache for lazy solutions that encourage more laziness. Likewise the repeal of the 17th Amendment I keep hearing about. I’m into that, but too many people think that this instant that happens we will be magically transported to a political golden age where we will never have to even participate in government ever again. (Never mind that in both cases, we have all failed to drill home the importance of valuing temporary public service and not constantly raiding the federal treasury to pay for things that are best paid for at the state and local level.) Cities can be revived, BUT they NEED to be run by opposition parties. And there is one more thing that CAN revive them, but I doubt it will be done, because doing this is simply viewed by Americans as simply TOO HARD.
That thing is the revival of civil society. Do not allow government to take over vast segments of what used to be run by civil society (such as social programs to look after the elderly or the less fortunate; yes, things like that exist even now but not to the extent of times before). Why do school districts and local governments feed kids over the summer rather than parents and organizations like churches? Why can’t school districts open the kitchens of the schools to charitable organizations to take care of charitable acts instead? (For some examples.: Government does not exist to help the poor; it exists, in a very real sense, to kill people. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at August 25, 2023 03:10 AM (f0XAF) 414

When I was an innocent 19 year old going to the big city was wonderful. Coming from a small 600 people hamlet to the big city was and adventure. College awaited, and meet lots of people like me. Got lots of smiles on the sidewalk as I was a handsome kid.
Flash forward many years and small towns/cities are still pretty nice to live in. I have several near me that haven't fell into disrepair yet. Most have Republican mayors and maybe the old downtown has gone away, but its still nice. Shopping has moved to the suburbs or online. I have a nice small town house for 150 K, and see the mayor out often talking to the people. No real public transplantation, except school buses. Will this all end as state and federal rules mandate more and more shit every week. Posted by: Colin at August 25, 2023 04:07 AM (2DV6+) Posted by: Skip at August 25, 2023 04:07 AM (MOY79) 423
