THE MORNING RANT: Electric Vehicles Are Exploding In Popularity!!

Mercedes EV fire - Jax.JPG

I frequently mock electric vehicles for their propensity to spontaneously combust, but these things are seriously scary. We just keep hearing more disturbing stories about EVs that burst into flames, many while they are parked, turned off, and not charging.

Here are some more of these stories since the last time I discussed the topic.

*****

“Mercedes EQE Loaner Car Burns Down Inside Florida Homeowner's Garage” [Inside EVs – 7/24/2023]

A Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan caught fire and burned to a crisp inside a Florida homeowner's garage last week, severely damaging the building.

The link directly above includes an embedded video of the house burning from this ferocious EV fire.

Garage on Fire - Jax.JPG

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ Sedan was in the garage when it caught fire on July 19. According to Jennifer Ruotolo, the EV was a loaner from Mercedes-Benz while her own car was getting serviced. She told News4Jax that the luxury electric sedan wasn't even charging when it burst into flames – she doesn't own a home charging unit.

The header picture up top is what the electric Mercedes looked like after it was pulled out of the garage.

As we’ve discussed before, even very minor fender-benders often cause EVs to be considered total losses by insurance companies, because there is no way to know what damage was done to the battery, and it doesn’t take much to turn a lithium ion battery into a potential bomb. Ponder that the next time you rent an EV or consider buying a used one, since you have no way of knowing if that car had some minor impacts or curb encounters that might have damaged the battery.

*****

The World Rallycross Championship was shut down last month due to a destructive EV fire, again, from a vehicle that was not being driven.

Battery Fire Destroys Event.JPG

A battery fire has destroyed both of Speed One Racing’s electric Lancia Delta World Rallycross cars. The two Lancia Delta Evo-e race cars were reportedly in the paddock at Lydden Hill Race Circuit in the UK on Friday morning when a fire originating in one of the cars’ battery packs spread and consumed the team’s road tent, taking both cars with it. The fire shut down the World Rallycross Championship event while race authorities attempted to ascertain the cause of the fire.

*****

A few weeks ago I covered the story of electric truck manufacturer Nikola, and how it tweeted out that foul play was suspected when one of its semi-trucks caught fire, which soon engulfed other trucks around it. Of course, an investigation revealed that there was no foul play. The problem involved the batteries.

Apparently, once EV batteries are damaged, they’re like those wacky birthday candles that re-ignite even after you blow them out. One of those damaged trucks caught on fire again at Nikola’s headquarters.

Nikola - Reuters - Damaged Truck.JPG

Undamaged EVs are alread terrifying enough (there is no way would I ever allow one to be parked in my garage) but if an EV was in a wreck or otherwise damaged, where the heck do you store it knowing that it could erupt in flames at any time. If I were a wrecker driver I would not want to ever tow a damaged EV.

Back to Nikola, you may recall that I put it at the top of my “EV Manufacturer Dead Pool,” predicting it would be the next to go out of business, following Lordstown Motors’ bankruptcy.

Well, Nikola is getting closer. It just suspended all sales of battery powered trucks and recalled all those on the road.

“Nikola Recalls All Battery-Electric Trucks, Halts Sales After Fire Probe” [Reuters – 8/14/2023]

Nikola said on Friday it was recalling all the battery-powered electric trucks that it has delivered to date and is suspending sales after an investigation into recent fires found a coolant leak inside a battery pack as the cause.

*****

I have an obligation to acknowledge when I get things wrong. As noted above, I predicted that Nikola would be the next EV manufacturer to go bankrupt. I got it wrong, it was actually a Biden-touted electric bus maker that was next in line.

Proterra, Electric-Bus Maker Touted by President Biden, Goes Bankrupt [WSJ – 8/08/2023]

Proterra, an electric bus maker that has been lauded by President Biden for its U.S. manufacturing operations, has become at least the third electric-vehicle business to file for bankruptcy in roughly the past year.

[h/t to Mr. CBD for bringing this one to my attention. I think Proterra was his entry in my EV Dead Pool.]

*****

GM has been plagued by exploding EVs, so they are now trying to figure out why.

Popular Science - GM - When Battery Fires Happen.JPG

I know! I know! [Buck waves hand furiously in the air.] I know the answer to this one!!

It’s when lithium-ion batteries are used as a power source for a vehicle rather than using a gasoline powered engine.

You’re welcome, GM.

*****

I believe that others on the blog have already covered this next story, and I am not going to joke about it, because this awful EV conflagration took a man’s life.

“Burning Car Carrier Towed to Temporary Location off Dutch Coast” [Reuters – 7/31/2023]

A burning car carrier off the Dutch coast has been towed to a new location away from shipping lanes as part of an operation to salvage the ship, the Dutch public works and water management ministry and local media said on Monday.

The freighter, which was travelling from Germany to Egypt when the blaze broke out on July 26…

Ship charter company "K" Line said on Friday there were 3,783 vehicles on board the ship - including 498 battery electric vehicles, significantly more than the 25 initially reported.

EV lithium-ion batteries burn with twice the energy of a normal fire, and maritime officials and insurers say the industry has not kept up with the risks.

Shipping companies and insurance companies have a day of reckoning coming regarding EVs. They are under pressure from the eco-left to embrace electric vehicles, but EVs are explosively dangerous, they are almost impossible to extinguish when they catch fire, and they are so fragile that the slightest damage to an EV will require it to be totaled.

52 So, here's my take on the EV push;

There will never be widespread adoption of EV's. There will never be enough capacity on the grid(s) to support EV's. There will never be enough EV's to meet demand if EV's are the only personal vehicle sold in the US. EV's will never surpass the capabilities of ICE vehicles. Manufacturers who switch to only EV's will eventually go bankrupt.

This is all known. By us. By the feds. By the manufacturers.

The Plan™ is to make personal transportation rare and unaffordable to the public.

A mobile society is difficult to subjugate.

Let me preface this by saying I support Trump simply b/c I don't trust any other GOP politician to actually pursue a conservative agenda. I've been lied to and betrayed by far too many GOP politicians running for federal office who claim to be conservative and turn into GOPe immediately after the election.

Desants could say "I understand why GOP voters support Trump - they've been lied to and betrayed for decades by GOP politicians who claim to be on their side in the culture wars, border issues, etc. They trust Trump on those issues. I want to promise that I am not lying about wanting to fight for you on those issues. I understand your hesitancy to trust another GOP candidate. But I won't let you down". A GOP candidate just acknowledging this truth for the first time would be a breath of fresh air and gain some votes.

It's the government. Again.

Look up pedestrian safety regs if you're unfamiliar. Car designers have to obey government regulations to protect idiots and drunks. Hood-lines had to be raised to that there's space between the hood and engine, and that screws up the proportion of the entire car. the next time you go out, try to find a new car with a hood-line that continues underneath the windows. No cheating, though. No hood bulge and then a curve or anything like that. Just a straight, flat hood leading into the line where you rest your arm on a nice fall evening.

77 A young lady just moved in here. Very nice kid. She's parking her car down in what is pretty much visitor parking. I told her to stake out a spot under one of the ramadas, in case of hail, very common around here. Like I said, nice kid. I didn't notice her car was a Prius, and she's scared of a fire and damaging other cars. Judging by the condition of the car, it's a very late model. Anybody hear of hybrids going up in smoke?

Red China's EV fetishism could have given a hint on this one. There is a city there (I forget which one) that went all-in on EV buses with plenty of Party support to buy the monstrously expensive things.

Except that the ranges aren't very good and the system can't be economically operated and large numbers of buses are down for maintenance at any given time and they've had to cut bus routes pretty dramatically because the effective fleet size is much lower than expected at any given time. And they're now out of money and can't get new ones or perform maintenance and they're trying to keep their diesel buses running, too, to fill in the gaps...

85 52 So, here's my take on the EV push;

Agree with all of this. Interestingly enough, in the beginning of the auto industry over a century ago, EVs were the rage; Edison himself was working on a workable EV engine. Henry Ford worked for Edison for a short time, and at some point told him about the ICE he was working on. Edison immediately said that ICE would be the wave of the future, because the power source was internally contained.

We loved those things, and I never heard of any lithium battery fires with them. But frankly, now I shudder at the thought that I used to carry them inside my wool shirt against my chest.

There are a lot of EVs, absolutely. Most of them will never spontaneously combust or catch fire after a wreck.

But EVs spontaneously combust or catch fire after a wreck at significantly higher rates than IC cars. Either can happen with a traditional car, too, of course - it's just way less likely than it is with an EV.

Not all EVs are going to catch on fire by any means. But the odds are much better than an EV will catch fire than a traditional car.

ha, in the John Deere "right to maintain" battle, Deere had claimed they can't allow private companies to do maintenance because of the EPA reg's. EPA clarified that they have no such requirement, only requirement is that Deere give all the necessary info to other servicers.

Farmers had been angry that Deere required their own people do the work, costing a lot of bucks. EPA does something right for once ... like other agencies, they would have a legit role if the top brass did not use them to enforce tyranny.

It's a really hard problem. EV batteries are big. And heavy. And at the bottom of the car. And attached to major structural components because they're so big and heavy. They're also shaped to fit in the vehicle to cram as many cells as possible into the space available. To put one on a sled would require sacrificing a lot of space used for cells both to accommodate the sled system and the fact that the battery would need to be a uniform shape (rectangular slab) and so the other voids that are often filled are no longer filled. The reduction in effective battery capacity and range would be pretty great, not to mention the weight and cost of the system.

The obvious alternative - to sling it below the chassis - would work, but that then puts the fairly vulnerable battery right above the road surface while also reducing ground clearance. Not a great combination (not for cars, anyway - trucks, maybe).

Pure vision-based navigation has killed people and will continue to kill people. Even if they got it reliable (they haven't), we don't have an acceptable solution to autopilot + the trolley problem. (disclosure; have worked for companies that worked on this + have friends involved in the testing)

Speaking of which, we almost died twice in about 10 minutes coming down a mountain pass recently; the retards in the vehicle in front of us were using the autopilot feature, and there had been road work during the day that had been shut down just prior. The car apparently spotted some 35mph signs that hadn't been covered yet and basically stood on its own brakes, coming down from 70 mph on a steep downhill. Just because the car can stop doesn't mean the trucks behind it can. About half a dozen people were about ready to drag the non-driving driver out of his stupid fucking car and lynch him after the second one.

If I want to double my range I can buy $100 worth of gas cans and a second tank of gas. For an EV to double it's range with an instant swap you need a $15k+ battery. Nobody is going to do this, especially when most EV owners have 1-3 other vehicles.

There is a special place in hell for that person. If you're in this position, there is one - and only one - acceptable approach to this problem:
1. Go to the far corner of the parking lot
2. Park and disconnect the trailer
3. Go to the charging station and charge up like a regular car
4. When finished, go hook up again

Is that a time-consuming pain in the ass? Yes, definitely. Are you a monumental, Titanic-scale asshole if you don't? Also yes. If you don't like it, don't get an EV tow vehicle.

Commented on this here a year or two ago (and others have discussed battery swapping):

Read a biography of Musk several years ago -- and one of the ideas that I thought was brilliant, but they haven't implemented obviously, was to make the batteries easily exchangeable.

You park over a pit at an exchange center, a robotic arm pulls out your uncharged battery and installs a fully-charged battery, and you drive off.

Other commenters pointed out the various issues with this, and to be efficient/effective it would likely require that all EVs have a standardized battery system.

272 Have we reached peak AWFL? "Am I gay?" I'm a middle-aged woman reinventing her life after marriage and kids — and I'm not alone. Turning in is common for women in their 40s and 50s. Why don't we talk about it more?

It was in the locker room of the gym when I saw the woman, standing with her back to me applying lotion to her legs. She was naked. I was mesmerized. With the quickness of a snap, the hold on me released and the question emerged from the fog, "Am I gay?"

I was so tethered to the only life I thought I could have that even after having my first same-sex attraction at 44, which led to a four-month affair, I still never questioned my sexuality. I immersed myself in this other-worldly experience while going about my otherwise typically heteronormative existence. Until that day in the gym.

The women I met as a late bloomer offered stories of the path they traveled before arriving at their redefined sexual orientation...By the time these women reached their late 30s, 40s or 50s, something or someone woke those dormant feelings. Others, like me, never had a previous same-sex attraction awareness, and those first times knocked our worlds off their axes.

One would think one was staying at the local electrical substation instead of a motel.
