Hawaiian Power Company Could Have Replaced the Aging Transmission Wires That Sparked the Wildfires -- But Spent Its Money on "Climate Change" Instead
One of the many, many failings of leftists is that they disdain mundane repair work and upgrades. They only see Grandiose Battles against Existential Threats, because they are narcissists who must always create a narrative around themselves making them fantasy-fiction heroes.
So they ignore the boring work of simply keeping infrastructure in good state of repair, instead crusading to Save the World. While bridges crumble and roads are worn to patches, the left continues Fighting Infrastructure Racism. That failing, the refusal to do the little things necessary to sustain civilization itself, just murdered hundreds of people. And they're not ashamed of it. They're proud, and calling for new Global Crusades.The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Hawaiian Electric, the biggest power supplier in the state, focused on shifting to renewable energy sources to combat climate change, rather than spending money to address fire risk around its power lines. Earlier that day, John Podesta, a left-wing stalwart who advises President Joe Biden on clean energy, took to the White House podium to blame climate change for the wildfire in Maui, which destroyed Lahaina and has likely killed hundreds of people.Even faced with the reality that spending money on wasteful green feelgoodery actually killed hundreds of people, the cultish left shrieks about their Heroic Mission to Fight the Weather.
Apparently the kindling for the wildfires was an non-native species of grass which catches fire easily. Moron Robbie says this was planted intentionally to feed livestock, because it's drought-resistant. But maybe it also spread out into the wild. Not much can be done about that. But Hawaiian Electric could have spent money to upgrade its aged transmission wires to make them more resistant to wind.
"To stop these disasters from getting even worse, we have to cut the carbon pollution that is driving the climate crisis, and that's what the Inflation Reduction Act is all about," Podesta said, using the disaster to promote Biden's law on its first anniversary.
The Wall Street Journal points out that California also saw wildfires caused by aging power lines:
The Journal reported that suspicion is rapidly focusing on Hawaiian Electric's power lines, which are suspended from telephone poles, many of which were downed in the wind, and some of which were seen sparking in the hours before the wildfire spread.
Since [California power company Pacific Gas and Electric]'s bankruptcy, Hawaiian Electric has made reference in regulatory filings to the risks of power-line fires, but it waited years to take significant action, documents and interviews show. During that period, the company was undertaking a state-mandated shift to renewable energy. ... In filings over the next two years with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, which is tasked with approving utility projects and spending, the company made only passing reference to wildfire mitigation. ... Former regulators and energy company officials said the utility was focused at that time on procuring renewable energy. Hawaii has been on a push to convert to renewables since 2008, when a run-up in oil prices sent electrical rates at Hawaiian Electric--which relied on petroleum imports for 80% of its energy supply--through the roof. In 2015, lawmakers passed legislation mandating that the state derive 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2045, the first such requirement in the U.S.Leftists routinely laugh and taunt when there's a weather-related disaster in red states. Leftists claim that red states did this to themselves, and so deserve it. They also view maintenance as a sunk cost that doesn't accomplish anything new. This is also true, but that doesn't make maintenance a bad idea.
Building a new road into an area does something new. Maintaining an existing road just costs money. So if you have to choose between maintenance and something new you can slap your name on, most government types will choose something new.

My read on the Constitution/Amendments is that they wished to essentially set up a UniParty with two wings. You know, everyone pro-America, patriotic, Christian(ish), educated, clear on the law, with a stake in the country and society, etc.
And two Parties, each to keep the eye on the other Party to prevent systematic corruption, and to fight for the betterment of their fellow Americans. The parties or wings would basically fight over how much absolute freedom vs how much control the gov't should have.
The rest, if not spelled out in the Constitution, goes to the states to do as the voters wanted. So, in Texas, we might not have abortion whereas in California, they're serving up fetus Sloppy Joes.
The problem is that the Uniparty is now anti-America, fuck the citizens, serve the Chinese, and grab as much moolah as you are able.
I don't know how you recenter that.

What I read is that one housing development asked for a release of the water supply to combat the fire early on in their area. Took over a day of arguing before it was release and that was too late. The guy in charge of the water is a native Hawaiian and eco nut who believes we shouldn't use water. Until certain things happen to these people, it will continue.

The wind from an average hurricane - itself a small fraction of the total energy of the storm - puts out as much power as half the annual worldwide electricity production. There were 30-some hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons in 2022. That should tell you something.

Here in San Diego, whenever the winds blow particularly hard, some areas in the rural east county get their power cut off. Why? Because the local power company was sued and lost big time because their power lines were the nexus for at least one of the fires one year (never mind the worst fires were the results of stupidity--a hunter got lost and set a signal fire-- or arson).

Same up here in the oft-sued PG&E territory with the shutoffs. People in the hills of Oakland/Berkeley sometimes go 72 hours without power. Except I honestly can't tell what makes this area burn. I get the impression PG&E is woke as shyte and spending their resources on something other than safety. From what I understand wasn't really invasive. Non-native, yes. But planted because it's drought resistant and used to feed livestock. It was there on purpose, just mismanaged.

This is spot on and extends to natural resource management. In 2022 the US Forest Service royally screwed up when the started two different controlled burns and failed to control them. Some months later 342,000 acres burned up along with 330 or so houses. A significant contributor was the forests that were loaded up with fuel from suppressing fires for a century.
When the tsk-tsking and finger pointing died down the fires were caused, it was determined by leftist propagandists, by a failure to fully account for the effects of climate change.
The Maui fires were not caused by an act of God or climate change. They were caused by the lunatic left and their ignorance about what is required to run a modern technological society.

Almost all of which are rusting badly.
You know, because in the Northeast we've decided it makes sense to dump metric fucktons of salt on our roadways every winter, which destroy cars, fields, ponds, and metal (like bridges.)
So instead of staying on top of painting those bridges, or reducing the amount of salt used, they just let these bridges (which will be very expensive to replace) die an early death.
It's a mixture of idiots running things, incompetence, and of course -- they get to say "we need MOAR MONEY! Our infrastructure is crumbling!"

Ummm, yeah that is why one of the first pieces of equipment a fire dept gets is a pump truck.
Back feeding potable lines with the pump truck to feed a hydrant block(s) away is unorthodox. Most buildings with wet pipe sprinklers do have fire dept. connections to back feed if potable water distro is down.
I'd expect the real problem is tinder dry old buildings getting hit with the fire storm while everyone is asleep at dawn.
That and an emergency siren which hadn't been tested since the false nuke attacks.

It's a bit of "and".
The power company is responsible for maintaining their right of ways. Which they did not do. They are also responsible for maintaining their wiring. Which clearly they did not do (in CA and it looks like in Hawaii as well). Which is what led to the fire starting.
But the environmentalists decided a while back, for some reason, to essentially ban control burns. Which means there are often times decades of dead vegetation just waiting for a spark to turn a small fire in to a massive fire.
Now, in a "state of nature" which no humans, it is true that the vegetation builds up, rots, and contributes to the eco system. But it also sometimes starts on fire from lightening strikes and burns for upwards of years at a time without human intervention.
Which would be fine, except people live there now.

I expect so, there has been two periods of 100+ weather here, this week has been hot. I am trying to find information about how water vapor is cycled out of the atmosphere, if we are lucky it rains out, if we are not it turns into ice crystals in the upper atmosphere and the summers go cool and the winters get brutal.

That was something I found refreshing about where I live now. The fire risk is minimal, but the risk of trees downing power lines is really high.
The utility here clears the rights of way pretty reliably. When an area starts seeing meaningful tree damage (that is, frequent power outages) or they are doing service and see high risks, they send the crews to go clear the rights of way.

If we're talking about CA -- Obviously they cut down and cleared their right of ways, or there wouldn't be power lines there.
They just failed to keep everything mowed and branches cut back. They admitted it was their own lack of maintenance.
That's a separate issue from the state refusing to do adequate controlled burns of the surrounding forests (really all forests), or allow logging, or any other method of clearing out the dead vegetation. It's not a big deal in the northeast since it's so wet here, but in CA, years of vegetation building up means lots of tinder for the fire.
But if the state did their job, then small fires on the power transmission lines would be inconvenient for the people who lost power, but would not result in massive out of control wild fires.

It wouldn't be a crash. Not really. It hasn't been real since 2009 or so. If it corrected itself to where it should be it would be rough, but it would be realistic.
It should've been allowed to happen back in 2009, but we're in too deep to allow it now.
