9 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

15 That change, made in 1982, repealed the “30 percent rule” that guided the process for determining what wages would be paid on which projects. Under the 30 percent rule, the prevailing wage for any particular area would be based on the highest wages paid to at least 30 percent of workers within the same area.

As I have said many times that big govt stimulus does not actually work. As money is shifted to a site for a project that money will go to the senior or most skilled labor. As private industry does not have the resources to compete they will still spend the same money on a project but may use a lower skilled person. This does not really create a new job opening as much as it moves to skilled or senior persons around.

23 Morning, folken! 'Tis Saturday (sadder day, as Fen's Corny Joke of the Day had it earlier this week). I'm somewhat caught up on sleep for a change. The tire on the Buick I thought was leaking has not lost any air this entire week, so I will forgo the tire shop trip and maybe go out to breakfast -- nasty as the heat is even early in the morning.

The Killer Kittens? I'm entertaining thoughts of trading them for two guinea pigs. One of them, or maybe both, have torn a section of my living room blinds -- a relatively neat block of five slats on one side. Now my place looks like all the other aspiring-to-be-a-ghetto windows around here. Dammit.

34 Prepare for the Perseids
Go out on almost any moonless night in August and you are bound to see a few “shooting stars.” Go out on the night of Aug. 12-13 and you will see lots of them. This is the night when the annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak, and a single observer at a dark-sky location can expect to see between 50 to 75 meteors in an hour. The Perseids are perhaps the year’s most consistent meteor shower, and they occur under nearly ideal circumstances this year. The crescent moon won’t rise until well into the early morning hours, and the mild nights are perfect for stretching out on a comfortable beach chair and looking skyward.

I assume that you'll hear nothing about this from Democracy leadership. That's because they know he needs to temporarily change his branding if he hopes to get reelected in WV. His even saying this much means he intends to run again instead of retiring.

I'm trying to get rid of clutter ahead of a possible relocation. There's a *lot* of junk I want to dump. It's just exhausting to think about carting it all to the dumpster or donating it to the thrift store. I keep seeing TV ads for a company that comes and takes your junk away: "All you have to do is point." (And write them a check, naturally.) It begins to sound pretty attractive.

There's something attractive, too, in the thought of dumping a lot of old junk and starting over: like being reborn, or like a crab shedding its old shell.

42 Even as a kid I disliked pencils. They broke too easily -- maybe because I bore down on them too hard. In school I loved those PaperMate pens that you refilled with a new cartridge, that thin brass tube, from the drugstore.

At one point Mom had some pens with lightly-perfumed ink. I used 'em, but scent didn't matter to me, just the darkness of the ink.

One of our curates is a very intelligent fellow. In one of his sermons, he said that our prayers should be structured in four parts, in descending order:

1) Praise to the Lord
2) Thanksgiving for blessings received
3) Remorse for failings
4) Petitions for intercession

In a church bulletin, he even had a sample structure for a prayer following this outline. Losers like me who were badly catechized when young and then lapsed for too many years simply have no idea how to pray, so this was by far the most useful sermon I've heard.

The Soviets used pens too. Neither them nor the US used pencils over concerns that fragments of graphite would break off and float around. A pen in space has to be different because of zero-G conditions but the pens that were developed were actually inexpensive.

I use the finest point black pen (Pilot) I can find. Also use 4 X 6 index cards daily - from the dollar store. I write the day and date at the top, then the weather forecast for the day and the next day - as a choice between two days may make me wait a day. I write things to the right side I want to get done, or as the day progresses stuff I have done. It's nice to be able to pick up the cards and search for last date grass was cut or when I ordered something. Occasionally I'll put my weight or waist size in the upper right.

I think in retirement some daily semblance of discipline is good.

We don't have squirrel problems which might be a concern for some, though. The fly-through style is fantastic for cleaning and refilling, though. And larger birds can land on them, too. We've had a pileated woodpecker come and see what all the fuss is about once.

As a Protestant, that is actually much preferred over what is typical in public prayers:

Sheet cake type pineapple upside-down cake, serves 32 people.

I would grab four-five of the little dishes that had a slice in them.

Just to eat the pineapple and glaze, then throw out the left behind cake.

And bowls of Creamed Chipped Beef on Sundays. Right next to the half pound of bacon, and three eggs over easy.
