The 2nd Amendment Is The Hill Upon Which The Left Will Die: They Will Do Anything To Gut It, And They Will Never Stop

It doesn't matter to the left how they ban guns. They will go after them with onerous purchase regulations. They will try to confiscate them using "Red Flag" laws. They will increase costs with ridiculous registration and purchase fees, and increased fees levied against retailers. They will restrict the right to carry weapons for self-protection to narrowly defined and useless places. They will demonize guns in the media...even anthropomorphizing them...as if guns were sentient and able to act on their own!

And when the American people resist those attempts, and the courts find them to be unconstitutional, the left immediately pivots to other attacks. Their playbook is long and dense and filled with untested theories and insanities, but they do not care. Because guns are the holy grail of the American left. If they can gut the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution, they will be able to act with impunity in the destruction of our other rights.

Biden's latest attack on our Second Amendment rights

Those who despise American gun ownership never seem to stop. Since they thankfully cannot ban firearms outright, politicians are now trying to ban cheap, commonly used ammunition and make hunting and shooting sports too costly for the average American.
The Biden administration has proposed a ban on lead ammunition on eight national wildlife refuges in the eastern United States. Obviously, this small-scale ban is a first step and will expand to the entire federal lands system (about 650 million surface acres or 30% of the country) if taken to its logical conclusion.
It is important to note from the onset that this has nothing to do with the 30-year-old ban on the use of lead ammunition for hunting waterfowl.
No major pro-hunting or pro-gun groups are fighting to reverse that. Rather, what the Biden administration is proposing is a total ban on lead ammunition for any purpose on these federal lands, which, when expanded in the future, will destroy the hunting and recreational target shooting industry as we know it.
This is the third attempt by politicians to completely ban lead on federal lands in the last decade.

Notice even pro-gun publications have accepted the click-click-click of the gun-banning ratchet! The ban on lead shot for waterfowl hunting is based on some sketchy research that is filled with wishy-washy words like, "seems," and, "suggests," and "points to." So after 30 years of the ban, the gun-grabbers are ready to move onto the next step, which is a total ban on the use of lead shot, with the first step being on federal land. The obvious next step is a ban on all lead ammunition on federal land! How many shooting ranges are there on federal land? So no more lead bullets...which means no more .22LR plinking and, depending on the way the regulations will be written (and they WILL be), maybe no lead at all in ammunition! Anyone know how much lead-free ammo costs? Anyone feel like shooting a few rounds of skeet with steel or bismuth shot? Or spend an afternoon shooting pure copper ammo?

And then? A general ban on lead ammunition, because it is for the children and the cute ducklings and goslings! Are you such a monster that you would condemn our children to a slow death by lead poisoning? Even though it hasn't been demonstrated that lead ammunition poses a threat to human health? It's just common sense regulation, in an abundance of caution!

That innocuous first step: going after something that not all gun owners care about, is a classic leftist technique. Then an incremental increase in the scope of the regulation lands squarely in our laps, and it is too late. That's why we all should fight the stabilizing brace ban, the bump stock ban, the magazine capacity restrictions, the insane increase in FFL harassment, and on and on and on.

The left knows that guns are America's Rubicon. If they can take them, then they can take anything.

Good thing that our 2nd amendment rights have been expanding at a break neck speed in the last few decades.

We now have 24 States that have constitutional carry laws on the books and three more States that are exploring that issue. When I joined the Army in 1975 there was one State that had generous carry laws and all other 49 States and DC either prevented the individual carry of firearms of they were restricted to getting a permit from the County Sheriff that was only good in that County.

SCOTUS has reaffirmed that the 2nd amendment applies to individuals and outright bans are unconstitutional.

We are winning the 2nd amendment battle. Only deep blue states are still fighting that war.

Jim, most batteries now have calcium components in them to make them last longer. That is bad when melting down lead from such a battery as in the fumes can kill ya pretty quickly.

Tire weights, for similar reasons, have went to zinc and steel alloys---you might be able to find around old abandoned service stations or the like or via a picker the older lead ones though.

For casting purposes, never never allow zinc contamination of your casting equipment. It will ruin your casts in even a small amount.

A few people on Cast Bullets have kept alive casting zinc bullets but they are lighter and loads have to be adjusted. Have to have an all zinc only casting equipment though.

Lead styphnate in most Boxer primers is the culprit at gun ranges where firing a gun aerosols it to be breathed in. Some lead, if a lead alloy bullet does not have a gas check, is also vaporized by the hot gasses when firing. Lead based fouling is also contained in the fouling from firing to some degree along with some other components of the primer and powder. If you handled fired casings and reload as well as shoot regularly at a range, you can get lead into your system if you don't wash your hands thoroughly, smoke cigarettes etc, and other unhygienic practices.

Range employees are at risk if they sweep up and dislodge the nasty particles into the air and properly maintained HEPA filtration is best for indoor ranges with loads of fresh air.

Can point you out to NSSF publications if you wish.

Don't do this. If you're going to recover lead from car batteries, here's how to do it:

Drill out some drain holes and empty the acid into a bucket of water and baking soda.

Cut off the top with a hacksaw or reciprocating saw or something.

Pull out the posts and get all the lead out of the little rubber sleeve thingers and toss those into a bucket of water and baking soda.

Dispose of the water properly.

Melt down your lead scrap and make ingots.

Sorry. Lead shot ban quite obviously did not destroy waterfowl hunting even though banned for over 30 years now. Seems unlikely to destroy target and recreational shooting. Make it more expensive. Yup. It's already become much more expensive. The sky is falling, actually. Just not over this.

77 whig....yep, I sure do understand about being nowwhere near the smoke of such a fire. But, desperate times will call for desperate measures.

My local tire shop gives me a full, 5 gallon bucket of about 95% LEAD wheel weights, for the asking. There's still a LOT of them used on all the base model cars and trucks that still have steel wheels. Alloy wheels of course, get the adhesive-backed zinc units.

And as I understand it, with a 3rd smelting of recovered lead, by time you've got there, you've skimmed off just about all of the dross and impurities from the lead, getting pretty damn close to "pure".

But I will keep in mind what you've said about zinc contamination. Might even be worth ruining some unused cavity mold, just to learn "how to see" it's effects.

The larger point of my post, though? They try to deny us Lead, I'll fight tooth and nail to get my hands on every ounce of that I can.

I forget the nic, but some Moron here used to work at a Shot Tower, making lead shot. I'd love to read a tutorial from him, sometime in the Gun Thread?

Long chain of causation claims on those duck studies which comes down to acidic wetlands can slowly erode lead and disperse it into the waterways, and the lead shot inside a wounded or dead duck/etc. can be consumed by others such as humans or other predators, and so on.

I think the second reason is why in California has a ban on lead hunting ammo but not sure how extensive it is.

I remember when the police objected to the severe tinting of automobile windshields and side windows. I agreed with them, it was dangerous for them to approach a car not knowing if the occupant was pulling a gun on them. Nothing happened. But I can tell you now, when I see a car with severely darkened glass, I can easily guess the melanin content of the driver and act accordingly. Maybe it's the accompanied deep base tones and rap music. Just a guess.

Anyway, you see a vehicle similarly equipped in an area where your car is parked, expect to lose a catalytic converter. Maybe the entire car.

Zinc in your lead messes up the surface tension of the compound and causes your molds not to fill properly. Even a very small amount in the pot can create issues.

Cadmium and some of the other metals alloyed in maintenance free batteries can do the same plus be pretty toxic themselves.

Cheaper to just buy lead shot while it is legal .

Ehh, I did FA during Uncle Sam's service and all I could think of is how much taxpayer money I was sending downrange. The three shot burst era was simply crappy.

For a narrow use case, yeah. From my somewhat limited experience with 3rb, I didn't see much better accuracy than I did with 3 rapid semi-auto rounds. Could just be me of course.

In other words, the only restraint on your "rights" being infringed at this time is if you have the right people in power. Which means... yeah, inevitably at one point, you won't.

Which means it's time to either 1. Have a referendum on what the Constitution means, and what it limits, or B. Come up with something else to keep these bastards at bay.

185 Back in high school in the late 90s, I was a tester for my rifle team (3p olympic shooting) of the wonders of Zinc 22LR. The stuff was atrocious. Every 3rd shot went haywire. I'm sure they got it a bit better, but the low density will never equal lead for precision shooting.

We practiced at an Army base and we constantly had to fight OSHA to keep it open, as the Army couldn't be bothered.
