The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'. Erma Bombeck

Quote II

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. Albert Schweitzer

Quote III

There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.' C. S. Lewis

I'm from the government and I'm here to really foul things up worse.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg revealed Wednesday that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has introduced a new rule to increase the size of airplane bathrooms.

The rule will “require airlines to make lavatories on new single-aisle aircraft large enough to permit a passenger with a disability and attendant, both equivalent in size to a 95th percentile male, to approach, enter, and maneuver within as necessary to use the aircraft lavatory,” according to a DOT press release. The new rule follows the January decision by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a DOT subagency, to temporarily ground all flights in the U.S. for the first time since the September 11 attacks in response to a widespread FAA system outage.

Mitt Romney is a religious carpet bagging opportunist. He's a Democrat in Republican clothing. When it come's to presidential campaigns he's a loser. Why would anyone running for POTUS listen to him?.

Despite Donald Trump’s apparent inevitability, a baker’s dozen Republicans are hoping to become the party’s 2024 nominee for president. That is possible for any of them if the field narrows to a two-person race before Mr. Trump has the nomination sewn up. For that to happen, Republican megadonors and influencers—large and small—are going to have to do something they didn’t do in 2016: get candidates they support to agree to withdraw if and when their paths to the nomination are effectively closed. That decision day should be no later than, say, Feb. 26, the Monday following the contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

There are incentives for no-hope candidates to overstay their prospects. Coming in behind first place may grease another run in four years or have market value of its own: Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum got paying gigs. And as former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu has observed, “It is fun running for president if you know you cannot win.”

As they would say in France, "La Fuck off Pierre Delecto".

I think we have all put up with some bad neighbors over our *29 years on earth. This qualifies as a bad neighbor, I believe.

A displaced farmer living in an apartment building has infuriated his neighbors by raising seven calves on his fifth-floor balcony in China's Sichuan province. Apparently the mooing and stench was too much for other residents so they called police who orchestrated the removal of the livestock.

From South China Morning Post:

As Frank Zappa once crooned, "Why does it hurt when I pee?

(Bloomberg) -- A shortage of penicillin to treat a skyrocketing number of syphilis cases is so dire that US health officials are debating the need to declare a public health emergency, according to people familiar with the matter.

Major US medical centers are rationing the recommended treatment for the deadly sexually transmitted disease because of a supply crunch. From Michigan to Missouri to Texas, some health-care providers are prioritizing giving a key treatment — penicillin G benzathine — to pregnant patients and babies, because the drug can pass through the placenta and also treat the fetus.

Being a parent of a toddler can be a challenging job. However this couple have a real power trip issue.

Two Florida police officers were suspended after jailing their 3-year-old son struggling to learn how to use the bathroom, according to WKMG.

The Daytona Beach Shores Police Department revealed Monday (July 24) that Lt. Michael Schoenbrod and his wife, Sgt. Jessica Long handcuffed their child and placed him in a holding cell in October 2022.

The Florida Department of Children and Families received a tip about this incident and began investigating the couple. The police officers admitted to throwing their kid in jail on two separate occasions because they've been having issues potty-training the boy, state records say. Investigators said the parents aimed to scare the toddler into using the bathroom properly.

Schoenbrod and Long were also accused of smearing feces on the toddler's face, but they denied these claims.

DCF determined this and other serious claims weren't substantiated and decided not to intervene, police said. The State Attorney's Office decided not to prosecute the case following an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, according to officials.

I have the climate change thingy figured out. Say "No" to rolling black outs except for Washington, D.C and the 50 state capitol cities here in the good old USA.

Green agenda alarmists in the corporate media are now calling for widespread electrical grid blackouts for “the greater good” of “solving the climate crisis.”

In an article from the Los Angeles Times, the establishment media outlet argues that it would be “easier and less expensive to fight climate change” if the public would “be willing to live with” blackouts.

In the LA Times piece, writer Sammy Roth questioned what is more critical, “Keeping the lights on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, or solving the climate crisis?”

The push from the corporate media outlet aligns with the radical green agenda goals of Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration.

German Shepard dogs owned by the first family continue to pose risks to the Secret Service agents assigned to protect them.

According to The Western Journal on Tuesday, "Secret Service emails show that President Joe Biden's German shepherd Commander bit seven people over four months last year, sending one Secret Service officer to the hospital."

25 Ya know, I found out something VERY interesting when I started looking into the numbers on both syphilis and gonorrhea - the OVERWHELMING number of people who get either of those lovely diseases tend to be men who have sex with other men or women who have sex (knowingly or unknowingly) with men who have sex with other men.

So all of those "films" we were shown in Sex Ed class that were meant to scare the bejesus out of us were really only aimed at a very small minority of the class.

But we aren't allowed to say the quiet part out loud.

How in the Hell can a country as advanced as the United States have a shortage of PENICILLIN?!?!?!? It's not like it just came out on the market....🙄🙄🙄

27 RIP...

Rob Schneider
@RobSchneider
I remember the night
@SineadOConnor
ripped up a picture of the Pope when I was on SNL.
Though I didn’t see it happen.

It was an episode where I was very busy (in a lot of sketches) and there are moves that performers have where they know they can get laughs. Anyway, I was back stage in quick change (getting dressed for the the next sketch) and I didn’t know anything had happened. I came out and during the next sketch, I just felt the audience had changed. My usual physical moves that got laughs fell silent. No sketches got laughs after that. And the rest of the night was eerily quiet. It wasn’t till after the show that I had learned that Sinead had tore up a picture of the Pope. I didn’t realize at the time that it would be a big controversy. I spent some time with her at the after party at the Tea Garden and she was gentle and lovely and didn’t seem to have a worry about anything. We laughed about a few things trying to understand each other’s accents and had a drink and she could not have been lovelier.

The fallout from a Pfizer factory being damaged by a tornado could put even more pressure on already-strained drug supplies at U.S. hospitals, experts say.

Wednesday’s tornado touched down near Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and ripped up the roof of a Pfizer factory that makes nearly 25% of Pfizer’s sterile injectable medicines used in U.S. hospitals, according to the drugmaker.

I knew some people who owned Akitas which are a large guard dog breed. In their view dogs like this, if they had questionable temperaments, needed to be euthanized. They felt terrible because they had a young akita that had bitten twice. They felt that rehoming it was too risky. 75 Sinead O'Connor died from a broken heart. Whether she intentionally harmed herself or just over-medicated and didn't wake up, the death of her son 18 months ago took everything away from her. All of her other children are grown, and there wasn't anyone else that she "needed" to be there for, so she left to be with her son because life wasn't worth living any more without him in it.

Every parent who has lost a child has wanted, at some point, to just give in to that desire.

I didn't care for her politics, but I grieve for her pain. I hope that she found the peace that eluded her in this life.

78 33 How in the Hell can a country as advanced as the United States have a shortage of PENICILLIN?!?!?!?

No giant conspiracy when it can be attributed to greed and incompetence. But really, there is no excuse for this. This is a required drug of the 21st century. It's not like they can't just create more. It's not a limited resource like lithium or gold.
Pfizer made bank with the covid stuff. Profits guaranteed by the Fed Gov, no less. Now, they shorted manufacturing a common drug that has a low margin. By creating an "unexpected" shortage, everyone that needs it bids up the short term price. Gotta keep those balance sheets looking good.
A tried and true method.

So, you're saying the fix is in?
Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar

==========

I would say not. Government and defense were, of course, one and the same, and the judge's awkward questions about the scope of Hunter's immunity is what blew the whole thing up. It was designed as a wink-and-a-nod where the government would pretend to continue investigating with possible charges in the future -- but then the judge got nosy. Like, no charges even on unrelated matters, ever? Even the things you're investigating now? I'm not going to rubber-stamp that. It's unprecedented. They were forced to shuffle and stammer and claim that, uh, of course that's not what we meant. Er, we meant he, um, can be charged? Right, defense?

Defense said NO.

Now defense and government have 30 days to cook up an even more opaque, unprecedented, and sugary deal, and the judge will decide on that.

There are threads of silver now among those braids, but it only highlights her beauty. Folks remark on her long locks all the time. (She makes this ol' hippite look good.)

Long, long ago, when we were young and stupid(er), still living in Chicago, I shaved her head. Her mother was horrified. Our young daughter was aghast. (BTW her hair did grow back, to the aforementioned glory.) She has a lovely head, I had to admit.

The day after her buzzcut, we heard that they were offering free tickets for the Sinéad O'Connor concert to any gals who would come in and get their head shaved. We weren't like big O'Connor fans or anything, but, gee, missed a freebie by being ahead of the current thing!

I don't know how Boeing, Airbus, and airlines can meet the proposed rules without reducing plane lavatories by half and/or removing at least one, probably two, full rows of seats. At present, lavatories are shoe-horned into airliners, with hatches constraining their number and size. Hatches can be relocated and lavatories can be located in the middle of passenger compartments instead of at the ends. Neither are inexpensive modifications.

As you said, it is virtue signaling/lying you really care for some people while making it more expensive for everyone to fly.

193 Today's adventures in hobo wrangling included waking up to review my overnight security camera footage, see a man walk down an alley after sunrise, not see the same man return from said alley, then wandering down myself to discover that a window had been carefully jimmied open and replaced to avoid detection.

While clearing the building from the basement upwards, I noticed no disturbances, and almost quit halfway through, until I heard a subtle, but unmistakable sound in the distance: the snoring of a man who'd likely been awake for days. I tiptoed toward a small closet, confirmed my suspicions through the door, unfolded a lawn chair in the hallway, and waited for police to arrive.

Two officers walked him out of the building, but no arrest was made, and I later learned that the man in question was a five time felon most recently jailed five years ago for second degree assault with a dangerous weapon, plus one involuntary commitment for good measure. We shook hands as he left after sitting through a full reading of the notice on body cam for future legal purposes.

He's awaiting sentencing on a sixth felony next week.

214 I know everyone here believes Hunter's now-aborted plea deal was a perfectly routine, arm's length deal, negotiated in good faith by the opposing parties. /s

The plea bargain which the judge refused to accept was a "Type C" plea agreement, which WOULD'VE TAKEN AWAY THE COURT'S DISCRETION to impose any sentence other than the one the parties agreed to-- i.e., straight probation.

I mention this only because it's relevant to my post: I was a federal prosecutor for 27 years, until I retired. Type C plea agreements are as rare as snow at the Alamo. In 27 years, I only remember seeing exactly ONE of them.

Courts hate them. Prosecutors hate them (except in Hunter's case). If defense counsel asks for a Type C plea agreement, the first response is to laugh, and the second response is to say, "Hell, no!'

But Hunter's case was handled just like any other similarly situated defendant's case would've been... in a pig's ass it was.

One other thing: About half of the 100s of defendants I prosecuted were drug abusers. Drug abusers commit vehicular manslaughter; burglary, etc.

But NOT money laundering involving 20 shell corporations!

Then before you cut off your laptop computer for writing LA Times garbage, explain how killing people who depend on their medical devices having electrical power, or when people can't run their fans in heatwaves, or keep their aerobic septic tanks working, or the basement from flooding, or food/medicine refrigerated, security systems working, warehouses ventilated, grocery store freezers working... how any of this has anything to do with climate when Chindia is building a coal fired power plant each week for years and years to come

If it has a point, which is no guarantee, it's possibly that anyone involving themselves in the international drug trade, at ANY level or degree, is complicit and corrupted.
Back when I spent more time around people than I do now, I had total contempt for people I knew who seemed to think smoking a joint, doing a line, was 'harmless', when I also knew for-real people involved in trafficking; the 'casual consumer' bears massive responsibility for the catastrophe of the drug trade. If that movie has a point, it probably doesn't, it's just a pretentious mess...

Torn about this statement. The warfare experience fallout can result in people who are a danger to those around them. (Ask me how I know. Actually, don't.) Such people may realize it, but can't get the help they know they need. Years ago, there was little help, and even now most 'therapists' are heavily philosophically biased and mishandle people. I've known more than one person who took themselves out due to truly believing they were too much of a hazard to their loved ones.
Likely not a popular view, if it offends I do apologize. But in certain situations the rationale of 'pure selfishness' doesn't always apply; which is a subjective perception, I know.

302 Well, I got the 302 Ford engine and C4 automatic pulled out of the parts van today. I used the brute force approach: removed and saved the intact windshield, and used a reciprocating saw to cut through the dashboard and lower windshield frame. That gave me a clear shot to drop the hook from my chain hoist almost straight down to a lifting fixture that I bolted onto the intake manifold using the carb studs.

Got it part way out, realized the exhaust pipes were blocking further movement, and cut them through with the recip saw. Bingo! Out it came, easy-peasy. Poor old van will be scrapped, anyway. Could not give it away, a running, driving, camperized Ford van. Has an icebox and a stove and furnace in it. No sale. Oh, well.

Under Lake Superior it is. The faults along the Keweenaw Peninsula trace the portion of its arc that presently is above the waves. Percolation of mineral-rich fluids into the faults and interstices in the lava flows was the genesis of the native copper deposits that fueled the Copper Country's boom for nearly 100 years.

I get that he's been dealing with stuff for a long time, he got deployed to Iraq, if you remember that story about the VA getting caught rescheduling a vet's appointment in Minnesota after the guy died, while claiming that the guy rescheduled it himself, that was a buddy of his... He got married really young to a girl before getting deployed, and she just stuck around for his paycheck, then left when he got back... His mom got diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and it went from "no big deal" to fatal in the course of about 7 months... Life is hard... On the other hand, there were a lot of things going right, including those three little boys, and the two oldest are only 4. They're barely going to remember him, their mom is still young, it's likely she'll find someone else, but in the meantime, he's thrown her not just a lot of pain and anguish, but all sorts of work without rest as far as it comes to taking care of the three little people whom he helped bring into the world. I have a lot of sympathy for people who are mentally suffering, and I have plenty for Isaiah too, but he obviously wasn't thinking of others, even his sons.

And realize that not only every word he wrote was a lie, but every period, comma, semicolon and tilde, as well.

THEN, dive into your actual research, having been "briefed" on what the lies against which you'll need contend, have been identified and flagged for avoidance.

And yeah, something hinky happened with the Ways & Means Committee's amicus brief. Supposedly it had a bunch of sensitive info in it, Hunter's defense called the clerk (whether court clerk or electronic filing clerk we don't know) and asked that the info be redacted, the clerk simply sealed it altogether, Ways & Means Committee's counsel found out it had been sealed and called up and said wtf?, clerk said someone from your team said to take it down, W&M counsel said No We Didn't, clerk said Well they said they were with your firm, in the end Hunter's firm called it a "misunderstanding" and... it may have been just that. It devolved into a she-said she-said with no recordings as evidence. Anyway, the filing remained.

"Russification" it was called.

These are the lands and peoples that the modern Ukrainians rather foolishly shelled for the past seven or eight years, seeking to eject them back into Russia.

Was great P.R. for Russia though, the heartless shelling of helpless Russian Speaking "ukrainian" peasants.

This, coupled with Putin's "red-line" about NATO crowding his Russian border, and well, that was his Causus Belli.

351 The Army was only a part of the Holodomor, and not even the biggest part. And Army or not, most of the perps weren't career soldiers. They were largely freshly minted college grads, with heads full of aphorisms and pockets full of shitty Soviet ammunition.

And while the Holodomor was, in relative terms, the worst of the Soviets' many genocides, it wasn't the worst in absolute terms. They reserved that for the concurrent mass starvation in their own country. Holodomor is just the Ukrainian word for the same crime the Party was committing from Eastern Europe, to Central Asia, to Siberia, across more than a sixth of the world's total landmass.

Depending on who you ask, Ukraine suffered between 3 and 7 million dead in an agricultural holocaust that left at least three times that maximum number dead. But they had the best land, and died the most as a consequence.

They were numbers on a Kremlin balance sheet. And across the USSR, these murders were carried out by callow youths.

Biden is such a fool I'm surprised the Chinese Commies haven't already nuked us. I guess that they don't need to bother as he's already on their payroll.

372 Y'know, I do shoot with and have friendships with a few Hired Guns from the Med and Sandbox area and terrorist era theaters.

To a man, they all returned home with fortunes, and now live in half-million dollar homes, their logbooks of firefights and enemies vanquished mostly relegated to the depths of their gunsafes. As they build and raise their families on the backs of the vast earnings they won.

These guys can SHOOT, and have the gear, and the training, and the experiences. All are dot-mil background, but their real bloodletting was on the Company Dime. (think, Halliburton, Schlumberger, KB&R, but twice removed by "blackwater" type contractors)

Hell, I even have a friend who was NOT a shooter, just an I.T. guy in the Clinton era Balkans. He enjoyed a First Retirement at age 39.

Pity, I didn't have the dot-mil resume to go play those reindeer games. Kinda glad I didn't, though.

Tough life, the mercenary path. Great retirement plan if you get there. "IF".

Started with the Dirty Harry sundtrack (amazing, by the way), which turned up the Starsky & Hutch soundtrack/first season, and for whatever reason now is playing a 1974 hard-rock album from some otherwise unknown band called 'Stepson', it's a good example of mid-1970s rock-proto-punk, not bad.

Feel free to Sound Off.

He's a friend, and a pretty good sort, for his type. Still though, he's a very Metro type, good with tech and 'net, wouldn't know which end of a shovel goes into the ground.

He went overseas on the value of the Tech Recruitment, not on the basis of a Mission, or such. Got his dollars, and bailed out, soonest. Can't blame him for that.

He voted Obama. Yet, later, twice for Trump. As in, "not incapable of learning". I'll cut him some slack, thus.

But still. I.T. pro. The limitations aren't a bug, they're a feature!

I have now yanked, shucked, silked, cut-off, cooked, and frozen so much corn now, I'm going to turn into a ear of corn myself, I think.

And now, the purple hull peas are coming in. Thankfully, the butter beans and zipper peas are not as far along, although planted at the same time, 5/21.

So I'm gonna be pickin' and shelling peas like a mo-fo now. Don't know if we'll can or freeze them, depends on how much we've got.

But I've now got a sanctified shit-ton of corn in the freezer. Okra, squash and zucchini in there too, plus a 1/4 steer.

There was a study in Thailand, well over a year ago, showing the elevated heart enzymes as well. That was ignored.

The risk/benefit ratio of these things is orders of magnitude beyond the threshold. Hell, the denominator there, benefit probably zero.

For any treatment, statistically, the risk/benefit should be less than 1. For a treatment for a disease you have, it can be relatively high, although much less than 1, depending. Take cancer for instance, or something that is likely to kill you. You can tolerate a lot of risk there and still come out ahead.

For a stubbed toe, however, you want that number close to zero.

Same for a vaccine, something you propose to give to healthy people simply to prevent some disease. You want that risk benefit to very close to zero. You can run the numbers and look at NNT, number needed to treat, NNH, number needed to harm and make a statistical assessment of that ratio.

My mother went with her young girlfriend, who's only 81, down to Ridge Spring SC to get some peaches. She came back with 5 boxes. A box is a half bushel.

So, we're soon gonna be canning peaches. The difference between store-bought and these fresh peaches canned is orders of magnitude. After we canned some last year, my mother refuses to eat the store-bought canned peaches.

Tomatoes are growing in their little greenhouse shed, as are the green and purple beans. Lettuce we got in droves, and are sneaking it into work to leave on the breakroom counters. 402 The co-working space skews heavily to AWFLs; who I have found to be possessed of staggering entitlement and privilege. They often truly believe nothing bad can happen to them; that they will always be protected regardless of their own behavior. It leads to an absurd lack of any sense of safety; and if YOU bring up something might be dangerous, often YOU will be treated as a 'creep' for even thinking of it and pointing it out.

I'm pretty sure it's one of the AWFLs who just can't be bothered to deploy their keyfob every time, as their hands are always full of bags and Starbucks drinks.

I've been sort of dragging my feet on what to do about him. But this last week, I made the decision. His blood sugar got way out of control, levels of 300 - 400 mg/dL.

They doubled the dose of two of the drugs, and that, along with keeping the carb load down, got him back down to "normal". Still way high for a normal adult, but for him (I think they said an A1c of 8.0% or less is "good" for an elderly person in his condition).

Then Saturday night, he didn't eat much, and said his stomach hurt. When he started to get up from the the table, I felt his abdomen. Tight as a drum.

So, EMS it was.

I was dirty, sweaty and stinky. Hadn't shaved in about a week. Looking at myself in the mirror, I looked like a booger. I'd call the law if I saw myself coming. So, shower and shave I had to do.

WHen I got back there with him, they informed me he tried to climb out of the bed a couple times. I apoligized for taking so long, but said they'd have called the cops if I hadn't showered.

Anyway, talk about hell night. Daddy kept trying to get out of the bed, tried to yank his IV out. I had to stand next to the bed and hold him in, and keep his arm straight so he wouldn't bend it and block the flow.

And he started talking nonsense. Fussing and complaining. At one point, he yelled out, "Where's that woman? I'm gonna cut her off!" What the hell he was trying to say, I'm not sure. The woman may have been a nurse who was in and out all along. Now, "cut off".

He always hated lights at night. Was it the light in the room that needed to be cut off. So I got it as dim in there as I could.

I got mine over early: haven't seen either 'parent' in 30 years. They've never seen their only grandchild. At this point one is dead, the other I won't bother seeing even if they wanted. They're terrible people, and that's not just a subjective assessment; it's a general observation by most people who've gotten to actually know them.
A lot of people are dumbfounded, appalled, and apologetic/'condolences' about cutting off contact with relatives and especially parents. Some people are just no damn good and you are better off without them, and many times people like that do have kids. Who are far better off without them.
