He always thought of the sea as 'la mar' which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her. Sometimes those who love her say bad things of her but they are always said as though she were a woman. Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys as floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the shark livers had brought much money, spoke of her as 'el mar' which is masculine. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or even an enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favours, and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them. The moon affects her as it does a woman, he thought

Homer captured the choppy feel of the ocean, the construction details of a sturdy dory and, above all, the need to be alert while working on the water. A fog bank can move in reducing visibility to zero creating potentially deadly peril. Homer's audience probably knew that. Even with the partial view of the fisherman's face, Homer conveys the awareness and concern of the moment. Add to that the way he conveys the hard labor required to make a living that way.
Oh yeah, I could enjoy and study this for hours. Posted by: JTB at July 21, 2023 09:44 AM (7EjX1) 80

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at July 21, 2023 *** Not that much. Everybody who calls himself educated needs to read a little of ol' Ernest, maybe some of his short stories, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Old Man and the Sea. But there are lots of other 20th-century authors who write in the same spare fashion and tell more intriguing stories (se: Cain, James M.). In days of olde, when a ship was overtaken by a wave coming from behind, and the wave broke over the stern of the ship, it was referred to as being 'pooped'. This picture reminds me of when in the '60's I met an old Norwegian man on LBI with hands the size of both my hands put together. He stood with a 6'3 straight-back and broad-barrel chest at 78. When I visit with the boy, who was his renter, Tunis would tell stories of his long boat fishing days complete with old faded pictures of him and other men standing on the beach readying the boats to shove out into the ocean waves. There were always shots of whiskey accompanied with the word, skol. Sweet memory.

That article in the Morning Report about Norman Mailer was interesting. Another narcissistic. pseudo-intellectual a-hole. And apparently a psychopath.
__________ Do tell. Posted by: Hunter S. Thompson at July 21, 2023 *** All I know about Mailer is this anecdote. When his first novel The Naked and the Dead was published in the late Forties, you couldn't actually have characters saying "f*ck." Thus Mailer's editor changed his characters' usage to "fug": "Fug me," "What is this fuggin' thing," etc. At a cocktail party, Mailer was introduced to one of the Manhattan cognoscenti. This person smiled at him and said, "So this is the young man who doesn't know how to spell 'f*ck.'" Posted by: Gene Autry at July 21, 2023 10:20 AM (J2vNu) 233

I think boys really like 'tales' where somebody goes and does something and overcomes some external obstacle to achieve some objective to the betterment of the world.
Posted by: Bitter Clinger at July 21, 2023 10:37 AM (Y2rTN) --- Stories about adventure, exploration, and excitement? Yes. They tend to really enjoy those...Not sure how much that's being taught in school these days, but from what I saw during my grad school days in teaching English, those were not a high priority. Instead, the preferences was for stories that are "real," about race and ethnicity and how it shapes the characters' perspectives. Not all that enjoyable... Both Gladiator 2 and Deadpool 3 are reportedly costing $600,000 a week while things are shut down.
How does that work? I guess maybe rental on the locations or something? Posted by: Bitter Clinger Yes. Every penny is spent as if they were shooting. Impossible to shut down, send everything back, only to have to re-ship everything out in a day or two because the strike is over. >>Lookit the size of those fish in the boat! Tuna?
Probably already answered, but: halibut. From MFA description: Shortly after returning to the United States late in 1882, he settled in Prout’s Neck, Maine, similarly both a fishing community and a pleasant summer resort, where he painted the local population and their work. The Fog Warning is one of three paintings he produced at Prout’s Neck in 1885 describing the lives of the North Atlantic fishermen. Like many of Homer’s 1870s images featuring farm children, The Fog Warning is a painting with a narrative, though its tale is disturbing rather than charming. As indicated by the halibut in his dory, the fisherman in this picture has been successful. But the hardest task of the day, the return to the main ship, is still ahead of him. He turns to look at the horizon, measuring the distance to the mother ship, and to safety. The seas are choppy and the dory rocks high on the waves, making it clear that the journey home will require considerable physical effort. But more threatening is the approaching fog bank, whose streamers echo, even mock, the fisherman’s profile. THe next day, bright sunny day, but I noticed on what looked like a wall of smoke low on the water coming towards the harbor. It didn't look like clouds because it was sitting on top of the water. For a few minutes I thought there had been another cannon demonstration that I had slept through or something. THen I realized how widespread it was, and checked the weather. Fog warning.
