Today In History Christian Spain Pulverizes Its ‘Enemies, Visible and Invisible Toward the end of the year 1093, a secret plot between the Almoravids and the Moors of Valencia, which had only recently become tributary to the Cid, resulted in the overthrow of its king, Yahya al-Qadir, who had “increased their [Valencians] hatred by being a friend to the Christians” — that is, by being a vassal to the Cid. During the uprising, fanatical Muslims discovered al-Qadir trying to abscond out of Valencia dressed in and concealed by a woman’s burqa. To cries of “Allahu akbar,” the mob slaughtered him as an apostate and hurled his body into a camel dung pit. On learning of the Valencians’ treachery and murder of his vassal, the Cid’s “anger was kindled, and his soul was inflamed,” writes the Muslim chronicler al-Maqqari. Like a fierce storm, he came and with extreme violence thrashed the Valencian countryside, taking all the castles and suburbs up to the city’s very walls. He “fought so fiercely,” writes Ibn al-Qama, who was present in Valencia, “that the Moors were terrified at the havoc he played among them.”What happened next? Read on to find out, but this is one of those pivotal moments in Western history where the Muslims were turned back from overthrowing Christendom, such as the Battle of Tours and the Siege of Vienna. At The Movies The Top 100 Movies in the History of Film Lots of room for debate here, which brings us to tonight's question: Drive Angry? Plan 9? The Perils of Gwendolyn in the Land of the Yik Yak? (disqualified from the "worst" list because Tawny Kitaen spends most of the movie naked) Second Time Lucky? (Likewise disqualified because Diane Franklin spends much of the movie naked). What's your answer? Unabomber Ted Kaczynski died this week. I've been kind of surprised by the number of people I've seen lionizing him. I think this explains the phenomenon. Ted Kaczynski’s Murderous Legacy Doesn’t Mean His Diagnosis Of The Post-Industrial West Is Wrong In Industrial Society and Its Future, published by The Washington Post, Kaczynski argued that industrial-technological society, which he referred to as “the system,” was inherently destructive and posed a threat to human freedom and well-being. He believed that modern technology had led to the erosion of personal autonomy, the loss of authentic human experiences, and the degradation of the natural environment. Hence the manifesto’s infamous opening line: “The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.” “The system does not and cannot exist to satisfy human needs. Instead, it is human behavior that has to be modified to fit the needs of the system,” he argued, believing that humanity’s purpose would become the perpetuation of technological advancement and nothing else as we would become subject to deistic materialist progression. Technological advancement would become humanity’s teleological goal and the orienting principle for human civilization, which parallels sentiments allegedly expressed by Google co-founder Larry Page about his desire for the creation of a “digital god” and the ushering in of artificial general intelligence (AI fully on par with human capability). In this I'm reminded of Joseph McCarthy. He may have been a nasty little man, and you can question some of his methods...but damned if he wasn't right about the commies. Grace
Post-Constitutional America United States: Fifty Little Dictatorships But while the smoke clears, a more insidious development is taking place. Reliant Robin Being A Man Transgender man weeps while explaining how much easier it was to make friends with 'open, vulnerable women' - and says he can see why suicide rate among males is higher I'm posting a link to this article because I can't find the clip. I saw it last week, but the article quotes most of it. First of all, being a man is hard and often lonely. Stop the presses, film at 11. I actually feel sorry for James, s/he is obviously hurt, but although s/he has “been a man” for 8 years, s/he obviously still tries to connect to other people as a woman would. Men and women are different, and growing up is when we learn how the dynamic between ourselves and others of the same sex works. James is way behind the curve. I'm horrified at some of the normal ways that I see women treating each other, and I know my wife sees some of the man things that I do as baffling. James may have transitioned, but s/he still sees the world as a woman would. My friend Demp has some suggestions for James if s/he wants to connect with men on a man's level. 1: Dig a hole 2: Light something on fire What suggestions would you make? I'll start. Pull your lawnmower out of the garage into the driveway, along with a tool box. Take the cover off of the motor, and stare at it. Within half an hour you'll have a half dozen guys staring and poking with you. These suggestions should be self deprecating and in fun. It's not manly to kick someone when they are down, as James obviously is. Meanwhile, In England Woman Abused By Trans-Identified Male Contacted By Police After “Misgendering” Non-Binary Patient While In Hospital Read it to believe it. Woman was abused by her trans partner, and while she was in a psychiatric hospital trying to put herself back together, someone reported her for “misgendering” someone, and now the police want to talk to and possibly bring charges against her. The worst movie I paid to see in the last 20 years was Eat Pray Love. It was a festival of suck from start to finish. I think Julia Roberts is a lousy actress and the character she played was shallow and whiny while pretending to be deep and searching for fulfillment. I only went because my cousin's friend wanted to see it. Even she did not like it.

How to be a man: Build a nice model airplane and enjoy it. When tired of it and you need the space for a new nice model airplane, mixe gasoline and or paint thinner with Styrofoam into napalm. Poor inside the nice model airplane. Tie airplane to string or fishing line. Set up green army men outside in a nice battle formation. Set model airplane on fire and spin it around over the army men battle formation is it burns up and disintegrates, plunging into the army men and setting the surrounding on fire while giggling maniacally. Hose down area. Repeat as needed. Posted by: My Pimp Shot My Dealer at June 15, 2023 10:11 PM (3yZ87) 22

I've decided that I really like the movie Yesterday, about a schlub musician who wakes up from a bus accident to find that nobody has ever heard of the Beatles. He proceeds to make a huge splash by playing their songs and claiming he wrote them. Things go predictably awry.
It's sweet, fun to listen to the old songs, and there is one very poignant moment with Ed Sheeran (of whom I knew nothing before the movie) realizing he's Salieri to the protagonist's Mozart. Best of all, Lily James. Anyway, that isn't what we're supposed to be doing, but I just thought I'd point it out. Posted by: Archimedes at June 15, 2023 10:17 PM (eOEVl) 44

Worst movie? "Flexing With Monty", no question. Starring a way-past-her-prime Sally Kirkland and a sweaty Trevor Goddard, best known as the Aussie lawyer on JAG. It's not so much as a bad film as a hostage situation - I'm pretty sure the entire cast was randomly snatched off the street in the Hollywood area and forced to perform a deranged film student's script before they were released.
It's ranked at "Oh, Hell No!" for entertainment value and general rationality. Total trainwreck, I survived 15 or so minutes of it in stunned horror before I recovered enough to fall on the remote and randomly turned away from it. "Plan 9" looks like effing "Citizen Kane" next to this pile of shite. Posted by: bittergeek at June 15, 2023 10:40 PM (ShQqR) 117

Another awful awful movie that makes you a rube if you dislike it: MOULIN ROUGE with Nicole Kidman. It was directed by Baz Luhrmann, whose movies I will never see again as a result. Not one shot lasts longer than 2.5 seconds. Nicole Kidman at her clammiest and most skeletal plays a dance hall girl. Tons of super-fast zooms into people's faces complete with whistle sound effects to cleverly take you out of the movie for... no discernible purpose. Left before it was even halfway through. The poor bald lady (that silly pretend beard comes with that cost) cries like a girl throughout while explaining that she didn't understand that Toxic Masculinity is just being a guy. It's dark and lonely and suck it up, buttercup. That's the job you signed up for.
The best part is where she is upset that people don't talk to her in the grocery store but it's not because she's Gay or a bald headed bearded woman, but because that's what men do and how men are expected to behave and interact in society. If a stranger nods in greeting that's pretty much all that's expected. must speak in defense of one of Baz Luhrmann's works: Strictly Ballroom.
I taught for ten years, and it came out while I was teaching (other dance movies of the time included Dirty Dancing, and some really execrable ones like "The Forbidden Dance", about lambada, which brought the thong into general wear by a lot of people who should never have worn one, ever. All the dance movies brought in customers, so, there was that) I remember one of the students asking the advanced dept supervisor about Strictly Ballroom, saying "How much of that is true?" After a beat, Elliotte answered "...all of it." She was right. Special spot in my heart for that movie. Posted by: barbarausa at June 15, 2023 11:35 PM (uAuXI) 302

For those that liked Bullet Train, Brad Pitt shows up in Bullock's The Lost City basically playing his same character from the former movie. the story of The Cid is what the story of the 47 Ronin would have been if it were a European story
Ruy Diaz, El Cid, was dispossessed of his lands, position and honor through manipulation of his prince and his rivals, and goes off to fight with his companions as mercenaries, and finally when he gets some traction is stabbed in the back again and fully kicks everyones butts and takes all their stuff, putting them to the sword. Then using that kingdom as a base he begins to conquer his enemies battle by battle. Injured and killed in his final battle, with his enemies rejoicing over their victory over such a feared enemy, his companions tie his body upright onto his horse, and with the body of their leader at the van they charge the enemy, scattering them in terror. El Cid was very unusual in his battle management for the time, using his companions to help plan and critique his battle plans. Posted by: Kindltot at June 16, 2023 12:31 AM (xhaym) 413

Jim, That is very cool, I loved the Fifth Dimension growing up, nice voices, great musical arrangements. Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at June 16, 2023 01:21 AM (a4EWo) "died in a tragic kiln explosion" is a meme around here. I don't know the origin. But it is a semi-serious suggestion for a stock answer for the kids of the former porn starlet. But figure the porn starlet marries and starts having kids after her last movie is made. By the time her kids get old enough that their classmates will have any familiarity with porn, some ten years will have passed. She will have aged, have a different hair style, and likely would go unrecognized by her old fans. Not a huge risk, IMHO. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 16, 2023 01:31 AM (IJCfs) 446

For best movies, I forgot Seven Days in May and the Manchurian Candidate, both of whom others have noted. I'd also like to mention The Blue Max, The Battle of Britain, and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, because I'm a sucker for airplane movies. Not a great movie, but one with fantastic aerial shots is 633 Squadron, which is a precursor for the climatic scene in Star Wars.

Right up there, or down, with The Blair Witch Project is The Lovely Bones. Horrible by any account, but because some filming was done inside the worn & virtually empty MacDade Mall with its own gruesome history, it's cherished by some local dopes.
(Silver Linings Playbook & Creed 2 were also locally filmed, as was the Mare of Easttown series. But, it's a lie, Kate Winslet didn't - couldn't - learn to speak with the Delco accent for her part. It's gonna warm up next week, get back to normal temps for this time of year, but it's gonna be wet. I've already got some fungus among us in the garden, and tomorrow I've got to get my ass in gear and spray some fungicide to nip that in the bud as Barney Fife says. Another great comedian was Jack Benny. One of the classic TV stations runs his shows. He was one of the greatest -- Young Johhny Carson had just come on the scene during Benny's reign, and got the Tonight Show in NYC sometime. Jack would have young Johnny on, and that was a hoot. They'd do an act where they hated each other, and got little insults in all the time. Jack Benny is said to have had the best comedic timing of any of the greats. Watch him and you'll see. He was a master. When Jack Benny died, George Burns was supposed to do the main eulogy (all these guys were big buds). George and Jack had another little rivalry act they'd both do on their shows, talking trash about each other. Anyway, George couldn't do it, he was just too choked up. Bob Hope took over and delivered it. He said, Jack you had the best timing of all time, but this time you stunk. Way too soon, man. Henry Petroski, who penned the regular "Engineering" column for Sigma Xi's "American Scientist" magazine, has passed on at age 81. The hearts of everyone at Sigma Xi are heavy with the passing of engineer, historian, and writer Henry Petroski. The longtime Duke University professor was a regular contributor to American Scientist magazine and a 2021 Fellow of Sigma Xi. Read more: https://ow.ly/Ylra50OPX3a Not unlike Martin Gardner at "Scientific American", Dr. Petroski's column was the "must read" item in each issue of "American Scientist". I imagine his replacement won't be his equal. IIRC, "Scientific American" tried out the author of "Godel, Esher, Bach" to replace Gardiner, but, as best I could judge, that pretentious gasbag could keep his gaseous airship up for only so long before it went down in flames. It is impossible for a SUPER AWFUL movie to be the worst ever. It's at least memorable. The worst movies are ones that are just "mediocre and forgettable" as they are a waste of time. Thus, Plan 9 can NEVER be the worst movie ever BECAUSE it's so awful. Posted by: lorien1973 at June 16, 2023 07:32 AM (Lavx8) 524
