But while the smoke clears, a more insidious development is taking place. The largely unknown Uniform Law Commission (ULC) has proposed a law that would drastically increase executive power in the United States and reduce citizens’ legal right to resist unconstitutional edicts.
The ULC is an influential interstate organization that works to make state laws more uniform. Since 2021, the group has worked to a “Model Public Health Emergency Authority Act.” The impetus for this initiative was the “uncertainty about the legal authority of governors and other state officials to enact certain emergency laws and declarations” during Covid, according to journalist David Zweig. “The legal ambiguity around many pandemic declarations resulted in new legislation in many states that explicitly clawed back public health powers from governors and executive branch officials.” In response, the ULC seeks to codify a system that shields and promotes unchecked executive authority. Zweig writes, “It wants the legal authority that’s given to governors to be clear. And a memo indicates that the ULC expects the adoption of the Act will result in people suing only if the Act itself wasn’t followed, rather than suing based on a claim that the governor’s actions were unconstitutional.” The Act threatens to strip Americans of their legal ability to oppose mandates, lockdowns, or other government orders. It offers total deference to governors in deciding what constitutes an emergency. No evidence would be required for state leaders to impose arbitrary and irrational limits on human liberty. Schools, businesses, and churches would be subject to the whims of executive power.

I saw it last week, but the article quotes most of it. First of all, being a man is hard and often lonely. Stop the presses, film at 11. I actually feel sorry for James, s/he is obviously hurt, but although s/he has “been a man” for 8 years, s/he obviously still tries to connect to other people as a woman would. Men and women are different, and growing up is when we learn how the dynamic between ourselves and others of the same sex works. James is way behind the curve. I'm horrified at some of the normal ways that I see women treating each other, and I know my wife sees some of the man things that I do as baffling. James may have transitioned, but s/he still sees the world as a woman would. My friend Demp has some suggestions for James if s/he wants to connect with men on a man's level. 1: Dig a hole 2: Light something on fire What suggestions would you make? I'll start. Pull your lawnmower out of the garage into the driveway, along with a tool box. Take the cover off of the motor, and stare at it. Within half an hour you'll have a half dozen guys staring and poking with you. These suggestions should be self deprecating and in fun. It's not manly to kick someone when they are down, as James obviously is.

True story. He only got his numerous friends and neighbors money back as he sold the rights to some rich guy who collected the worst movies ever.

I hated that movie, while everyone I knew was gushing over it. Here were my biggest problems with it. 1. Leo looked like he was 14 years old. Kate should have been arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
2. During the extensive period of time where that ship was sinking, that dumb bitch Leo wouldn't put on a life jacket. It didn't bother me at all that he drowned. He deserved it.
3. Dumb Kate threw a perfectly good blue diamond into the ocean.

Another awful awful movie that makes you a rube if you dislike it: MOULIN ROUGE with Nicole Kidman. It was directed by Baz Luhrmann, whose movies I will never see again as a result.
Not one shot lasts longer than 2.5 seconds.
Nicole Kidman at her clammiest and most skeletal plays a dance hall girl.
Tons of super-fast zooms into people's faces complete with whistle sound effects to cleverly take you out of the movie for... no discernible purpose.
Left before it was even halfway through.

I was taken to task with Fred's idea of dinner in a Santa Barbara restaurant before boarding 7 vodka tonics and a sample plate but...not none...the boat ride out out included a poker game with his mates and something called "FIREBALL" to drink and I surely lost my money...Once we got out to our island ....it only got worse for me...

The worst movie I paid to see in the last 20 years was Eat Pray Love. It was a festival of suck from start to finish. I think Julia Roberts is a lousy actress and the character she played was shallow and whiny while pretending to be deep and searching for fulfillment. I only went because my cousin's friend wanted to see it. Even she did not like it.

My verdict: It's got a straightforward plot, fairly realistic-looking action scenes, Dennis Hopper chews scenery as usual, and it falls neatly into the category of '90s nostalgia films. Recommend.

Note, Lost City is only ok - a decent choice for a date night flick. Speed, Bullet Train and Demolition Man are probably the best movies she's been in

Between the two of 'em, they account for a sizable chunk of many of our 29 y/o's Music Libraries of our Youth.
They're 80, and still firing on all cylinders. And just out-ranked Johnny Mathis as the most pleasant celebrities I've yet had aboard for the drive to the Island.

The main character had a fake mustache that kept tipping sideways.

That is the plan. The trailer has been very well behaved, and keeps the lane well. Only hinky thing was hitting some short period ripples in the road, and got a pitching oscillation going. A tap on the brakes ended it.

But figure the porn starlet marries and starts having kids after her last movie is made. By the time her kids get old enough that their classmates will have any familiarity with porn, some ten years will have passed. She will have aged, have a different hair style, and likely would go unrecognized by her old fans. Not a huge risk, IMHO.

Speaking of rain, boy it's gonna be a wet one this time around. We got another 0.5" late this afternoon, and the weathermen, including my cousin, are talking 3" - 4" next week due to some "decoupled low".
We've already had a wet and cool spring. It's gonna warm up next week, get back to normal temps for this time of year, but it's gonna be wet. I've already got some fungus among us in the garden, and tomorrow I've got to get my ass in gear and spray some fungicide to nip that in the bud as Barney Fife says. This next hot and wet week will let it get out of hand if I ain't on the ball.

When Carson was "bombing" it was hilarious. Doc might play Taps when his jokes were falling flat. It was a hoot.

I can watch Carson reruns from the '70s. It's still funny. I was just a little boy then, but I know enough of the history to laugh, just as if it were happening today. '80s shows, I was aware. I laugh and laugh.

Another great comedian was Jack Benny. One of the classic TV stations runs his shows. He was one of the greatest -- Young Johhny Carson had just come on the scene during Benny's reign, and got the Tonight Show in NYC sometime. Jack would have young Johnny on, and that was a hoot. They'd do an act where they hated each other, and got little insults in all the time.
Jack Benny is said to have had the best comedic timing of any of the greats. Watch him and you'll see. He was a master.
When Jack Benny died, George Burns was supposed to do the main eulogy (all these guys were big buds). George and Jack had another little rivalry act they'd both do on their shows, talking trash about each other.
Anyway, George couldn't do it, he was just too choked up. Bob Hope took over and delivered it. He said, Jack you had the best timing of all time, but this time you stunk. Way too soon, man.

Henry Petroski, who penned the regular "Engineering" column for Sigma Xi's "American Scientist" magazine, has passed on at age 81.
The hearts of everyone at Sigma Xi are heavy with the passing of engineer, historian, and writer Henry Petroski. The longtime Duke University professor was a regular contributor to American Scientist magazine and a 2021 Fellow of Sigma Xi.

Not unlike Martin Gardner at "Scientific American", Dr. Petroski's column was the "must read" item in each issue of "American Scientist". I imagine his replacement won't be his equal. IIRC, "Scientific American" tried out the author of "Godel, Esher, Bach" to replace Gardiner, but, as best I could judge, that pretentious gasbag could keep his gaseous airship up for only so long before it went down in flames.

It is impossible for a SUPER AWFUL movie to be the worst ever. It's at least memorable.
The worst movies are ones that are just "mediocre and forgettable" as they are a waste of time.
Thus, Plan 9 can NEVER be the worst movie ever BECAUSE it's so awful.
