Air quality finally okay in my area of SE PA. Northern Ohio gets all the fun today. Had four deer wandering around my backyard yesterday acting all confused. They didn't know where to go as the smoke was everywhere. Now it appears that a bunch of these fires were intentionally set in Canada. Posted by: Divide by Zero at June 09, 2023 04:09 AM (enJYY) 6
Huh. Google wants its employees to show up? Gee, that's rough. Might be too hard on their sensitive psychy.

Evening and morning to all! 'Tis Friday at last, that consummation devoutly to be wished. We had thunder and dark clouds yesterday afternoon and evening, but no rain. Better than endless buckets of hot sticky yellow sunglare, though.
How's the air quality where you are? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 09, 2023 04:21 AM (omVj0) 8
Morning, 'rons and 'ettes.

Air quality is not too bad, but it's noticeably hazy. I have some lung sensitivities, so it's affecting me a bit. Also allergies seem worse this year, but that may also be due to the lack of rain.

Hi, MLiI! I'm doing fine for the most part. The Killer Kittens are fine; Dagny has come out of her "Hel-looo, sailor!" phase and is playing hard as usual with her big black brother. Work is weird, we may get moved to a new set of offices, and if so it'll be time for me to put in my retirement papers. A little earlier than I planned, but so be it.

My guess is that lack of maintenance and spring thaw put excessive pressure on an old dam and it broke a little, then a little more, until about the top 10 feet broke away pretty cleanly. As the cement gets fatter the lower you go it's not a complete failure. Of course it coulda had a little help, but messing with it is a no win for both sides. Post recovery, fit a trip to The Tail of the Dragon with Mrs VIA's Miata, maybe in August. September brings another oncology follow-up at Walter Reed, so another drive to B'more. October brings our mostly firm plans for the Texas MoMe, so a week in the Miata from South Carolina and back. And that will line sup perfectly for being time to bring anther rescue kitty into our lives. So far, every feline member of the VIA household has been a rescue that God sent to us. Reddit is in trouble like so many other tech companies thanks to rising interest rates and loss of investor interest
-- I'd like to add: Setting up a system where the community itself has the ability to make wrong-think views disappear and only right-think views appear on the screen for other users to read is what makes me not go there unless I am clicking through looking for pre-posted information on tech or the like. And I just realized that the thumbs-downed (or whatever) disappeared posts probably are prevented from being scraped and don't appear in search results no matter if they have the correct information or not. If they don't celebrate Gay enough, or if they don't sufficiently kneel for washed up multimillionaire football players, that information is banned. I hate this timeline. There are some feral cats near my son's home, and he will feed them and put out water when they are around. (They seem to travel in a circuit.) He really liked one little black one that he named Privilege and eventually noticed she was pregnant.
She had a kitten on his front porch, then picked kitty up and ran off. He didn't see the mom for weeks, then he was happy to see her again once in a while. He never saw the baby though, and after several months sadly figured it had died. Until two days ago, when Mommy brought Baby to meet him. He was thrilled. We are approaching the July Summer Show Death March. On consecutive weekends it's clusters in Oklahoma City, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. 30 years ago, San Antonio had among the best shows in the country. The venue was downtown by the Riverwalk. The exhibitors were, for once, treated with respect. There was a free breakfast every morning. Exhibitors were encouraged to decorate their set-ups and prizes were awarded for the best ones. Entries were near 3000 each day. When we moved back here in 2009, everything had changed for the worse. The venue was moved to a faceless arena in a bad part of town, set on an ocean of July-hot asphalt. And now for the exhibitors it's pay for entrance, park way over there and shut up. I'm all for charging for APIs... why give away the content from your platform for free?
My guess is Twitter's API fees are directed toward corporations who want to place a company twitter feed of leadership on their own intranets and the like. If you aren't one of those, go to twitter's app or website like everyone else to get the tweets on twitter. That being said, I hope reddit's commie communities stay dark forever and the large amount of crap on those "communities" never come back. There are definitely some benefits to working from home if you can manage it.
For one, private conversations are private. One of the horrible trends that emerged in the late 1990s and 2000s was throwing everyone in low height cube cities. This is absolutely the worse thing one can do for ADHD people. For those who have to concentrate - dittos. The war with other cow-orkers over lights, temperature, level of acceptable hallway grab-ass, burning fish sticks in the microwave, fighting for conference room time, all of that is moot working at home. Tech was built on companies that grew, not ones that were profitable. Population declines in major markets are forcing all companies, but especially tech to focus on profits. This is driving the mass layoffs and changes in business models.

Pretty close, yes. Only other thing I might do is change tires from the 205's to 215's for a little more sidewall flex, and reduced road noise. Do the kittens have access to those little green turtles that kids sometimes have as pets over there? Our first round of Italian rescue kittens had constant digestive issues despite repeated antibiotics. After almost two months of battling this, I caught them drinking the turtle water from the plastic turtle bowl. And the I remembered that those turtles carry salmonella. We got rid of the turtles, a final dose of antibiotic, and never a single recurrence for the rest of their lives. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at June 09, 2023 08:05 AM (uLr+K) 239
I didn't watch the Super Bowl, but from what a gather from pro Jesus ads "He gets us" they were rather benign "Jesus loves us" sort of thing. So for A0-C to be shrieking about "Something tells me Jesus would not spend millions of dollars on Super Bowl ads to make fascism look benign." again tells me what a histrionic person she is, and I'm glad she is being throughly mocked in a parody account.

>What Reddit wants to charge for its API is at least ten times more than it makes from the same activity on its website.
I'm not entirely certain what the point is here; charging more - even much more - for the consumption of something you produce than the cost to produce it is the basis of free market economics. As for Reddit having an actual product...I'm not sure how true that is. Reddit's value comes from its community - Metcalfe's Law - and the number of people who will use a service with a nominal charge is orders of magnitude lower than the numbers who will use it if it's free, even if the nominal charge is trivial. It's only an actual product if people will pay for it, and I suspect if Reddit began charging people even, say, $3/mo for access the entire site would collapse financially in a quarter.
