  • Reddit is planning to charge lots of money for its API, just like Twitter. (The Verge)

Not quite as lots, but still lots, with the cited number being $12,000 per 50 million API calls.

As a baseline example, blockchain gateway Infura charges $1000 per month for 150 million API calls, while at the other end of the scale Twitter charges anything up to $2 per API call. Not $2 per million, $2 per call.

A reasonably configured server should be able to handle 10 million API calls per day, meaning that Infura has something like an 80% margin to cover all their costs beyond the bare hardware, Reddit has around 99%, and Twitter 100%.

Which used to be a lot.

    One Reddit user commented:

    They're digging their own grave.

Reddit used to very much a bit player behind market leader Digg, until Digg released a hugely unpopular update and told users who complained to fuck off.

And fuck off they did, in droves, to Reddit. I'm not sure if Digg is still alive.

Update: Sort of. The top post on Digg right now links to a Reddit thread.

  • Intel is planning to release 40 core Arrow Lake desktop chips next year. (WCCFTech)

This year the company is not expected to release a new generation of desktop chips at all.

Next year's 15th generation though should bring a substantial upgrade, though not all that substantial, as 32 out of those 40 cores will be half-speed quarter-size "Efficiency" cores.

I'd much rather see 16P + 16E cores, but that would make for a substantially larger chip.

I think I earned about $8K that year, my first "real" job. And I thought I had enough to live on -- rent, gas, food, booze were not bad, and my car (a '75 Maverick, so a new car pretty much) was my wife's, already paid for.

I certainly don't make 8 times that 1976 income now.

LiS, you have a point, but I'm not very Southern -- I don't sound like one and I certainly don't think like a Noo Awlins denizen. Plus this city has a strong tradition of Spanish rule as well. A lot of the architecture in the French Quarter, post the 1788 fire, is much more Spanish than French. On my first visit to Santa Fe in 1992, I was struck by the Plaza area's strong resemblance to the area where I grew up, near St. Louis Cathedral.

In many ways I'm much more Midwestern, or Southwestern, than I am "Southern."

I at least do the speed limit. And though it may seem like I have nothing to do I have a big day ahead. My highlights today are going to Lowe's to pick up a water filter for the refrigerator, then over to Walmart to pick up some shampoo, stop somewhere for a burrito or tacos, and then later in the evening go down for the first Friday art event on the plaza and do some poetry reading. I plan to take three or four trips to accomplish all these tasks because I have nothing else to do

55 As near as I can determine the Las Cruces police only ticket people that are doing 35 above the speed limit provided the offender also has a couple of kids or dogs duct taped to the roof of their car, or is pulling a junker car by a rope, or sexting their new hot boyfriend or girlfriend. Remove any one of those secondary conditions and you're pretty much good to go. Stopping for red lights is completely optional and apparently not a ticketable offense at all.

There are those who hate that speech might be free.

One of hypocrisy's uglier heads was the disavowing of free speech by the celebrated birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, the University of California, Berkeley. For several decades now it has hosted many a "protest against hate speech" whenever invited speakers to the campus have publicly expressed beliefs and ideas elsewhere that did not conform to a hard left point of view.

98 I mean, i know you're just lamenting on the obtuse vapidity of your local newscritters, SfP, but it kinda raises a legit point.... nothing is ever "behind" any increase in criminality and barbarism. Criminality and barbarism are the natural state of being a sentient mammal. It's just going to happen, it doesn't need a root cause.

It isn't the norm because human beings have spent millennia cultivating various versions of societies and countless frameworks of worldviews that say "beating someone up and taking their stuff is not acceptable", and raising one's children to reflexively believe that it's better to live in a society where nobody does that, so, you know, Don't Do That.

I think the prison invention is a degraded form of restitution that attempted to extract it without torture. Most crimes had a penalty of restitution or death. But the law was very different before the prison complex.

The only upside I see to prison is that it lessens the finality of corrupt judges. Imagine the life of a J6 political prisoner if torture or death were the only means of justice. Everything alleged against them was hypothetical and without any injured party. There were no victims to whatever they are being charged or held - so no means of restitution.

167 What's odd about the 'sandbag' thing: Wouldn't it make sense for the SS or even just the handlers to be on the look out for trip hazards such as this? Sweep the stages and remove them?

Everyone feels that they are too important to do that

Yeah, exactly. I was working part time at theater where Big Ears was speaking. The SS shutdown the theater for a couple days so they could crawl over every single inch of the place, we even had to fill out background forms so they could check us out. There was exactly nothing overlooked that was a risk to Big Ears. I am pretty sure they even had a sniper in the building. That sandbag story maybe true but for I am not buying it.

We had a product called 3Galert and boss said to change name. He said the G was going away.

169 Maybe someone left that sandbag there on purpose?
Maybe.

170 The sandbag was there to weigh down the mic cables and... avoid... creating... a trip hazard lol that's hilarious.

Back in the day we used gaffer's tape so there wouldn't be any trip hazards.

I haven't seen a movie in a theater in decades but do they still have 'Head Gaffer' and 'Best Boy' in the credits?
