The Vast Entitlement And Even Vaster Uselessness of a 30-Something Twit Must Overshadow A Looming Teamsters Strike Against UPS

The Teamsters Union is making noises that they are going to strike against United Parcel Service (UPS). Well, they always do that before contract negotiations, although the Teamster leadership seems to be more aggressive than usual, so they might go through with it.

Unfortunately for them, there is a significant competitor of UPS that was an afterthought in 1997 (the last time the Teamsters went on strike against UPS), and that is Amazon. So a strike that eliminates...even for a week or two...one of Amazon's main transportation channels will push huge amounts of volume into their own transportation system, and UPS may not recover some of that volume.

But the dislocation of hundreds of thousands of workers and the significant delays that a strike will cause for manufacturing, distribution and retail across America pales in comparison to the unimaginable catastrophe of Jessica Ray not being able to get her favorite toilet paper delivered to her door!

UPS strike looms in a world grown reliant on everything delivered everywhere all the time

Living in New York City, working full time and without a car, Jessica Ray and her husband have come to rely on deliveries of food and just about everything else for their home. It has meant more free time on weekends with their young son, rather than standing in line for toilet paper or dragging heavy bags of dog food back to their apartment.
"I don't even know where to buy dog food," said Jessica Ray of the specialty food she buys for the family's aging dog.

Standing in line with other people? Filthy uncouth people without the rarefied esthetics of poor Jessica? The horror! And carrying her own groceries? Is that even legal to force her to do that?

"We finally reached a point where we finally feel pretty good about it," Ray said. "We can take a Saturday afternoon and do a fun family activity and not feel the burden of making everything work for the day-to-day functioning of our household."

Oh..Thank God! She feels good about "it!" The immense weight of maintaining a household...of three people and a dog...has finally become manageable! Will wonders never cease! Dear old Jessica must be a titan of energy, planning, fitness and resourcefulness to be able to juggle all of that...with the assistance of delivery services, her doorman, her husband, and obviously a nice salary...just look at the size of her apartment!

This entitled, oblivious, spoiled little bitch has the temerity to whine about a very nice middle class life in a big city, in which she has the financial resources to pay other people to do a lot of the stuff that normal people do on their own without any thought that it was difficult or stressful or worthy of notice.

"It has the potential to be significantly impactful," Ray said. "My husband and I have invested a lot in figuring out how to remove the burden of just making sure we always have toilet paper."

Get off your fat, lazy ass and take a walk to the corner grocery store and buy a family pack of toilet paper. And while you are there pick up some food for dinner...and cook it yourself. Oh...and some cleaning products. Anyone care to bet whether she has domestic help?

The decades-long shift from a manufacturing-based economy to one that has a much greater percentage of service-based industry has conspired to lull people into what can only be a false sense of security...that someone else is going to take care of "it," whatever "it" may be.

But that attitude naturally devolves into the arrogance of superiority based on literally nothing at all. Jessica Ray sees herself as deserving of the service provided by more capable people, for no other reason than she has the financial resources to pay for those services, yet she sees that as a confirmation of some social hierarchy. She is a Houyhnhnm, and those hopefully anonymous drones who provide for everything in her life are the Yahoos.

As much as I despair of a breakdown in society, people like Jessica, and their obvious inability to manage even minor dislocations in their worlds, make the prospect of societal collapse rather amusing, if it takes a big bite out of her fat, entitled ass. Maybe her next job in the dystopian landscape of America 2.0 will be as a fluffer in a sex show, or if she doesn't lose some of that weight, maybe her lot in life will be as dinner for some roving band of ex-toilet-paper delivery folks!

It's roughly a factor of 30. That seems like something they should advertise all day, every day.

I do a fair amount of Amazon shopping for stuff I can't exactly run down to the corner store for. But I always gang my orders together so that at least three items can be shipped together. They don't always arrive together but I try.

Not out of virtue signaling or saving the planet or anything. It's just such a handy tool I don't wanna abuse it.

26 I'm not entitled and have no help, but I did get added to the list for Sam's grocery (including alcohol) delivery.

And I'm about a 20 minute drive, they make the trip just for me, for $8 and tip. Pretty convenient ... but I still go to Aldi's.

UPS delivers Amazon stuff, FedEx delivers WalMart and Sam's stuff (except the groceries, for which they hire o9ther drivers). The convenience is nice, but I'm prepped for a shut down.

Depending on the CBA, they may or may not participate in the union managed retirement. The Teamster’s don’t have a hiring hall relationship with UPS. The rates of pay are set between UPS and the local.

The GRRRL POWER stuff is just cosplay for the most part. It's been pushed and pushed into their brains since they were old enough to wear the t-shirts and pretend they could do everything the boys could do, but they know what works. They innately feel what's best for them, their children, and society as a whole. And it slips out sometimes.

They know Womens Lib was a screw up. They know it damaged them and society and relationships. They know they were why incomes were effectively halved when the workforce doubled. They know they're why both parents have to work to maintain the standard of living that their dad was able to provide all by himself.

Well, it depends. They deliver one small item at a time, whereas if I go to town I often make several stops in one area. Of course I am on the route, but those trucks are not always full.

A company I used to work for just asked me to come help take control back after a similar thing happened. I will do it - through management training as the fault lies right in the mirror. Negotiating (ironically) my consultant fees as we type.

Pay rates are set in the national contract. The locals have nothing to do with it. There are regional riders that may pay a little more for certain jobs, but most of the pay details are in the national contract.

Amazon is trying that sleight of hand BS. I'm certain it works.

On returns it will give you an option to "keep trucks off the road" and you take your return to the UPS store. So 100 of us driving our individual cars is better than one UPS truck on a set route that he travels almost daily...

So I ordered a new one this morning. I don't spend a lot of money on these things, and a decent 65" machine can be had for $300. So I ordered it.

45 I use amazon so I can stay out of the Charlotte traffic. Half hour to get to a store then half hour back, all to drive 5 miles. No thanks, I'll be happy just getting stuff from my porch. And if it's something heavy like giant bag of dog food, flats of dog/cat food cans or especially cat litter I'm ok letting someone struggle with it and deliver it to my porch. It's a great service I like using and I happily take advantage of it.

I haven't bought a TV in a long time (55" at $500 IIRC, and it was a deal at the time) but I walk through and notice prices just because it's interesting. I saw an 80" or so TV at Sams for under $1K. I know it's because it's made from cheap materials that aren't meant to last, and it's tracking and listening and selling your data to supplement the price, but that's still incredible.

I’m in better shape than most 29+ year olds of my vintage and spent some time in the service so have familiarity with firearms. But I’m no John Rambo or Kit Carson…. Without the infrastructure of civilization I’d probably starve in a matter of months, best case. I’m thinking Jessica Ray wouldn’t even last that long. I'm similar. And if there is the *slightest* thing wrong with my order, be it a leak, tear, day late, etc. I contact chat and they'll give me a $5-$10 credit (or sometimes the item for free). It's a contract, and I expect items to arrive on time and as described.

I doubt I've paid for an Amazon subscription in years.

I have never worked for UPS so admittedly clueless about their CBA relationship. I have never (and never would) agree to a national contract for the company I did have Teamsters at - a national contract gives WAY too much strength to unions. In fact, I dissolved one with the UAW through a lock out. I will give both the Teamsters and the USW credit for their grievance training programs.
The IBEW is the most fun to negotiate with - those cats are smart.

69 I worked for a natgas utility that went on strike. Then mgmt locked us out. Weeks out of work, no strike fund, huge strain on my marriage- and in the end we accepted a contract only marginally above what we were getting. That's when I decided I was anti-union.

There is a mental and physical benefit to these everyday task as one ages.

I saw an 80" or so TV at Sams for under $1K. I know it's because it's made from cheap materials that aren't meant to last, and it's tracking and listening and selling your data to supplement the price, but that's still incredible.

Now, whichever neighbor got it (Amazon gives you a pic of the order on your... or your neighbor's doorstep) put it at my door the next day, and I could have gotten my full refund AND my stuff. But, well, that's not how I roll.

In a true SHTF scenario people with fuel based generators are gonna be shit out of luck within a week or two. I'm looking into a small scale portable solar setup with portable storage (60 pounds) on wheels. Recharges in a matter of hours. Should handle small loads for a long time - stuff like lighting, small frig, toaster, microwave, maybe oxygen, etc.

The only kicker is the price - about four grand. I'm for, the wife against solely based on price.

During my brief marriage, I had a very small list of things I wanted picked up, so I could take it for my lunch every day. It wasn't hard to do, just pick up that stuff.

Then she'd come home with everything EXCEPT my lunch stuff. So I just went back to getting my own stuff for lunch, and left her to do the rest. Then I'd get yelled at for not bringing home shit she wanted.

Not the main reason I'm not married anymore, but it didn't help.

188 Not quite the same as delivery, but I use Kroger's pickup service for certain things (free if you spend $35). Hubby likes his Diet Coke, so when it is on sale, I order a dozen 12 packs and let them bring them out to the car and put them in my trunk.

A lot easier then going into the store and dealing with trying to get them all off a bottom shelf that is jammed tight. I add in anything that is pantry related, nonperishable. After they put the heavy stuff in my trunk, I go park and go into the store to pick my own meats, veggies, frozen, dairy etc.

Brand loyalty is an artifact of a culture that made sure we were influenced by advertising, and it's now permeated nearly every aspect of our modern life... including the fact that people like me think we need three teevees in a house with two people.

having read that it's a 2 Year Budget

makes me think it's a big ball of poo.

If McCarthy were serious, it would've been a simple annual budget so the Reps could put heavy Pressure on Punchy and the Dims next year right before the election.

Hubbymayhem is a truck driver and is out on the road Mon-Fri. I am the homemaker in this marriage. I do not work outside the home unless you count mowing the grass.
My job duties are cooking, cleaning the house, laundry, dealing with the day to day drama of a teen girl, grocery shopping, and whatever little things come up during the week.
Hubbymayhem runs the weed eater, chainsaw, shovels part of lawn care, will start a load of laundry, load the dishwasher, whatever he sees is needed if I haven't gotten to it.
It's called marriage. It's team work. No one delivers our groceries, no one delivers take out food.
Why do people just decide they don't have to take care of themselves?

And they all can be learned with delivery, too. I can see what is on sale and what isn’t, and buy what makes sense per my list. I rotate the store choice based on known sales. For example, Fresh Market has really great meat sales on Tuesdays. I stock up to realize the savings. I also teach the value of sticking to our budget, healthy meal planning, etc.

There are some things that it makes sense with, but they should be clearly stated. Pop-tarts, for example, have not been closely replicated by anyone else, and if that's your thing I can see why it would be annoying to get the Ol Roy version.

As the cook in the family I know that some brands tend to have more stems, and I lean towards the big brands for certain canned products (corn, certain beans that are served alone) and couldn't really care less about name brands for others (pintos or navy and white beans for soups or cornbread).

Yeah it's not for everyone, but I had the opposite issue where I'd just work whether it was 11PM, weekends or even Christmas. I don't simply clock out at 5 so it's difficult to "switch" off.

On the upside, it did earn me several company awards, so if I ever have a future employer hesitant about my productivity working at home, I have a good proven track record to point to.

I have spoken to some folks at different colleges, both teachers and students, and the government screwed up students beyond belief with the shutdown.

Kids don't know how to study or sit for classes / tests any more. There are kids who spent years online, and they're abruptly expected to perform in classrooms where they have to listen and take notes and take tests and answer questions etc.

All on purpose.

If J couldn’t work from home, we would have to live in Boston and not here in Alabama. He travels 30-50% of the time. He is on con calls all day. He has a dedicated office. He goes upstairs and I don’t see him except lunch and when his day is done. His commute is just up the stairs. I do not want to live north of the Mason Dixon let alone Boston, so this is a godsend for us.

Yep! Don’t forget my little one has autism and very serious learning disabilities. But we spent a lot of time on money math, even using fake money. She might not be able to do something complex in her head due quickly due to her learning disabilities, but she has full command of the concept and can figure it out.

Also, she has sat at the front desk of my studio where I have an attached boutique. While someone paying with cash is rare, it happens. She will pull out the right change for me, even though our POS system tells you what the change should be in total, she can make that amount up appropriately with right coins and bills.

At 3 boarding schools in Keny they all used Bronco brand TP: imagine a chocolate bar wrapper: the outside. That's how smooth the TP was, no absorbancy. Couldn't blow your nose as you'd just smear snot over your face. It was great for imaginary horse races using fiery steeds (a long strip of about 5-6 sheets, light one end and imagine the burning front is a line of horses - first one to reach the other end. Yeah, incendiary freaks).

292 Well, different folks have different experiences. I get more done working from home. They fired me because of my zip code. My coworkers asked if I would come back and got their manager to hire me as a contractor. One said my absence was noticeable the first week. It was bad after a month.

I did Instacart and Door Dash when Inslee mandated masks for two years. Now, I do shop regularly at the local markets. They are small and there's some things they don't carry. So I order online. I do sometimes do pickup at Walmart. I don't handle hiking through big box stores well.

I wanted to buy a loveseat or small couch. For some reason, there's not a lot of consignment or thrift stores around here. Ashley Furniture seems really expensive. I ordered one online and will put it together. I should have moved more furniture with me.

Paxton lead the 17-state lawsuit against the 2020 steal (rejected by SCOTUS, of course)…. He’s sued the Brandon admin how many times I’ve forgotten. Grant was occasionally a drunkard but never on the battlefield. I think I can forgive Paxton his lapses, even if true

Carriers like UPS go to a great deal of trouble to bundle deliveries to a particular area together. That's why you generally get a range of delivery dates, rather than a fixed day and time.

I recall a former professor of mine who left academia and started raking in the bucks. His specialty was optimization problems, and it seems that figuring out how to ensure that most turns for UPS trucks are right turns, optimizing the order of ports of call for container ships, and so on, paid a helluva lot better than teaching C++ to freshmen.

That's not how UPS does it. It has a fixed delivery date and it is considered an operational failure if the package is not delivered on that date.
