My collection is smaller. Most are no problem, a daub (dab?) of the paint on the lid, so no issue ID'ing the color, as there are only a few. Probably a state thing and mostly stupid, like most "environmental" things for decades now, but you can turn in the pain to any paint store and it's either free or nominal fee - for disposal. As the paint store I would use is almost right next to my favorite gun store .... not really a "hassle" if I ever decide to do it.

My house has a decorating scheme: Good Enough for Tenants. Cheap countertops, neutral walls, second-from-the-top-of-the-line appliances, landscaping that only needs watering. Maybe when I'm 90 I'll commit to a house and move in for real, but for now, I'm always renting the place out sporadically as I hop around. I've actually been living here for a couple years this spell and I keep my clothes in cardboard boxes in the closet. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at May 07, 2023 02:14 PM (lCaJd) 27

When we were getting ready to sell our last home, I was not allowed to have the real estate agent over until she completed the work. Had a guy paint the outside of the house a few years ago. Some carpenters who replaced some dry-rotted facia boards reco'd him - and, my gawd. Not sure I've ever seen a more diligent, focused, skilled worker in my life. Six days (seis dias) for prep - 1.5 days to actually paint (his brother came to help with that). And this is not a very old, or worn out/damaged exterior with lots of issues.
Nicest guy in the world, quiet. Wife was almost worried about him, he never took breaks. She brought him snacks and drinks. I almost wished I had some other job for him to do, having never been more satisfied with a contractor. Inside painting is all for me. I'm far less diligent, but that is reflected in my pay rate. I have probably 2 dozen paint cans. Some were from painting the old house before I sold it, basically extra gallons that didn't get used that I thought could be used in the new house, and didn't get used in the end anyway. The people who bought the old house liked the colors, so I left all the half used gallons with them so they had a record of what was used. Which brings us to other gallons that are the results of failed experiments. Then we got extra gallons of the new colors used in the new house, and also gallons waiting to be used in the living room, the last room I need to do my thing in. I am Paint Man.

Our oldBaltimore row home was built in 1954.
I heat gunned and took every inch of old paint off the wood trim in the place. Doors, frames, windows, window frames, baseboards......EVERY inch. Took about three years of casual off and on effort, doing one room at a time. Wore a mask, and a heap filter on the shopvac. About a year after we finished, I was doing a PSA blood draw at Walter Reed, and I casually asked my nurse if she could put in for lead levels on the blog work as well. No problem. I'd like to think it's DYI. Is it? Posted by: Regular joe If you are still here. Yes, it is very DIY. The most important part though is surface prep and follow the directions of whatever you use religiously. There is a rare occasion where the concrete is actually too smooth to hold paint well--in that case, you may have to use a power tool to wirebrush the concrete surface before painting. The other problem is if the concrete is new (let it cure thoroughly first) or if it had oil spilled on it. New concrete needs time to cure and oil spills can be addressed by the right surface prep methods. Posted by: whig at May 07, 2023 02:33 PM (uCOqa) 76

"The very first thing is fix the roof."
Not always. Sometimes the wood joists that the lathe is nailed to simply dries out and no longer grips the lathe, and the plaster, but instead over time begins to actually pull out of the wood joists. Our homes in our community were famous for it, as they were built during the time of transition from true lathe and plaster to 2x4 foot panels nailed in place, then the rough and smooth coat applied over the panels. And that stuff gets damn heavy. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 07, 2023 02:46 PM (1n+EO) 101

Given my present work situation I have a lot more money than time right now, and no desire to turn my limited weekends into even more work.
This is a good problem to have. I foolishly "saved" $50 by buying "boltless" metal shelving. That was a disaster. The shelves would spontaneously disassemble themselves. Reviewers of the product said that they remedied it by welding or using self-tapping metal screws to hold it together. For me, its easier and less time to pitch that shit back in the original box and swap it out for the bolted shelves that I know lasts for decades. So anyhow, saving a plaster ceiling.
1. using a stud finder, find and mark the joist pattern for the ceiling by snapping chalk lines for the entire ceiling. 2. Procure a good dremel tool, several carbide cutting bits and a good drill bit slightly smaller than the smallest decking screws that will pass through the thickness of the plaster, and at least 2.4 inch into the joist above the plaster. 3. procure hundreds of 'plaster washers' https://tinyurl.com/447r45yu 4. Here is where I deviate from the standard 'Plaster washer 'method. Space out and mark where you are going to put each washer on the joist lines. Now CAREFULLY, using the carbide dremel bit, grind through the smooth coat just enough that the finished washer will once screwed in, set recessed enough to be able to mud in the little bit of shallow recess that you have created for each hole. 5. If your ceiling has already began to pull away from the joists, you can over a period of several days tighten each of those hundreds of screws just a little bit daily, and pull the ceiling back into place. This method is not for the faint hearted as it takes time and patience. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 07, 2023 02:58 PM (1n+EO) 118

Growing up in N'Awlins where I did in the early 50s thru the late 60s, our house was maybe 8 or 9 blocks from the National Gypsum factory (which later became one of my customers when I later sold chemicals). There was always gypsum in the air we breathed. Whether it was crocidolite, rhyolite, amosite, anthophyllite, tremolite, or actinolite was all in the 'unknown unknowns' category. The only thing I can be certain of is that we were exposed to atmospheric forms of whichever flavor gypsum they were making at any particular time. None - repeat - NONE of us ever came down with an asbestos-related disease. That also includes the time spent installing drywall, doing the papering and the 'mudding' of the joints, etc. We were used to having dried asbestos 'stuff' caked on our bodies in various places. It was more problematic getting it out of our clothes than it was getting it off of ourselves ...

I have several gallon cans out back of the garage. They're dried out, so I'm going to start putting them out with the trash, in bags, "camouflaged" as regular trash as the contract trash outfit will not take paint cans of any type or condition. The first imperative of a quality paint job, is the quality of the prep work, first. I think everyone knows this, but not everyone GETS it. As evidenced in the resultant work.
The second imperative of a quality paint job, is to buy and use only high quality brushes and tools, such as Purdy brushes. Buy the correct type of bristle for the paint you're using, of course. Natural boar bristle and latex paints do NOT go together. Fact is, that's a good instant ruination of a $20 brush, right from the first dip into the can. The third imperative of a quality paint job, is to learn how to properly clean those quality brushes, hanging them as intended from that hole in the handle, properly snugged into the protective cover that came with the brush. I've got brushes I've owned since 1999, that still serve well to this day. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 07, 2023 03:20 PM (e6UQI) 143

Natural boar bristle brushes should ONLY be cleaned using thinner and/or mineral spirits.
Hit any boar brush with water, and the bristles will swell up, and the brush will splay wide, and form into clumps and fingers. Only thing it'll be good for after that, is for dusting off work prior to painting with non-ruined brushes. That said, it's pretty rare to even see natural boar brushes anymore. Also called Chinese Bristle. That's because most all the paints are water based now, and actual oil based paints have become pretty scarce. A good synthetic bristle brush with latex paints, well, hell, they're made to go together. And the synthetic and water clean up, doesn't hurt a thing. Again, still. Buy the quality brush. Leave the cheaper stuff behind at the store, you will NOT regret paying the premium. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 07, 2023 03:40 PM (e6UQI) 159

Brushes? Rarely, I disagree with Jim. He what, lives on a boat? So coatings he works with are different. For exterior painting, I go to Dollar Tree and buy cheap brushes and throw them away for each use especially for primer. For a finish coat, which in exterior, which what, your MIL is going to walk up and look? Spray it on and brush it in, with mid-grade brushes. Inside finish work? Yes, very, very high-grade brushes give the absolute best finish. Better than any roller that has ever been born. But who looks at that?
What weekender is going to blow +$50 on a 3" brush? Not me, when nobody can tell the difference anymore anyway. It's all orangepeel and pva. It will not increase the value of your home to do it. So if it's your thang, sure, but otherwise not. Posted by: LenNeal at May 07, 2023 03:48 PM (pqfA/) 169
>Unless you don't know which paint can corresponds to which room The code on a can of paint tells you which room got which paint? I did not know that. The paint stores where I live put a daub of paint on the lid so that can be used to match what is in the can. Posted by: Speller at May 07, 2023 03:49 PM (pSotA) 170
The transfer station at the old place would take paint cans, if the paint were dry. But Portland Metro Paint actually recycles paint into new. It works for interior and exterior. We painted the house in it. I bought several gallons of it with me, as I could tell there were ceilings that weren't completely done. Then I discovered they left all sorts of paint. I wish they'd left the molding and floor boards they took off instead.
I will hire someone to paint the outside, so that it's all one color again. And it's asbestos siding. Posted by: Notsothoreau at May 07, 2023 03:49 PM (u7leW) 171

I am mostly joking, but we have some very similar colors, so it is surprisingly difficult to keep the paint separate. I label the cans, but if I forget, then I am usually screwed. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at May 07, 2023 03:51 PM (ZCCyW) 172
Some years ago I bought a large steel cabinet for the garage to store paint and combustibles. It is now 95% full of paints.

matching paint colors? GAAAAH, my husband did that. He didn't want to change the colors in any room, although I did get a better yellow color for one room. We discovered that there were two different, but almost identical colors in one part of the house. He got lucky with some rooms as Sherwin Williams had the color info on file. But we had to take pieces in and try to match them. Didn't notice if the stepdaughter has repainted the entire thing.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo If there is still paint in the cans can't you paint a test piece of drywall and hold it up next to the current paint to see if you have a match? Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at May 07, 2023 03:52 PM (nMFct) 175

168 Brushes? Rarely, I disagree with Jim. He what, lives on a boat? So coatings he works with are different. For exterior painting, I go to Dollar Tree and buy cheap brushes and throw them away for each use especially for primer.

I need recommendations for the kitchen floor though. It looks like just the underfloor, OMB. They stuck vinyl tiles on it and called it good. The floor was poorly done and there are small gaps all around the wood. I don't know if I should put something on top of the wood first. I think vinyl planking will just break the way it is now.

CBD 3:51, our whole interior is one color. It's a dark shaded white. By that I mean in any given room, even if the whole room is painted the same color different walls and different parts of the same wall can get hit by different amounts of light which makes the same shade of paint appear to be a different color than another wall or even the same wall wall but the paint above a table against the wall looks different from the same wall below the table. Anyway the shaded white almost looks khaki but it scans as white and looks good with everything. Posted by: Speller at May 07, 2023 03:59 PM (pSotA) 183
Sorry, LenNeal. We'll agree to differ, here.
Quality brush, I can cut in exterior trim with dead straight and accurate lines, in a trice. Cheap brush? Flecks of paint, splayed bristles spewing misguided paint, every other flaw you want, is built right into the cheap brush itself. Gimme the good stuff, and I can get the work done a lot faster, and done right the first time. That said though, there is one place I'll go with you on the disposable brushes as being worth every penny. Brushing stains onto rough fence pickets, they're perfect for the job. Trash 'em after one day's work, brreak out a new one the next morning. And, I can think of another use for mid priced brushes, where you need adequate quality, but you're going to RUIN the brush in a single use. Epoxy paints, and those can't be cleaned up at all, period. That shit's gonna cure on the brush, in the can and hopefully, on the surface you've just painted, too! lol Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 07, 2023 03:59 PM (e6UQI) 184

My first world problem: I noticed a low tire on our minivan. Getting out the hose so I could us the built in air pump on the minivan to inflate the tire was a pain! You'd think Oldsmobile would have put a bit more thought into hose storage when they decided a built in air pump was a good idea!

Now you have all of the hassle of laying rebar and unless you groove it, the floor could be slippery when wet. If one is going through the hassle of laying concrete, might as well slope it down to a 4" drain and cover the floor with raised metal grating to make kitchen cleanup easy with a high pressure hose.
