Tech News

  • Speaking of a great weeping and a gnashing of teeth Buzzfeed News is shutting down and firing 180 staff. (Variety)

So, first, Buzzfeed News by itself had 180 staff?

Second, whatever you think of Buzzfeed, they actually published the Steele Dossier when everyone else was hiding it from view.

  • Is Intel's slowest CPU any good? (AnandTech)

    Yes, actually.

The 13100F only has four cores and costs around $100 but it is faster than the eight core Ryzen 1700 I was using until last year.

Faster than the laptop I am typing this on, faster than the Xeon E-2136 I use as a development environment, and not much slower than a 1240P laptop.

  • Speaking of 1240P laptops, I'm thinking of buying an Acer Aspire 7.

    It doesn't have a high-resolution screen, just 1080p.

The Four Essential Keys aren't in my preferred layout.

But it has a decent CPU (last year's i5-1240P, if you hadn't guessed), dedicated graphics (just a GTX 1650, but plenty for playing Minecraft on the go), charges over either a dedicated port or Thunderbolt / USB-C, and has easily replaceable DDR4 RAM which I already have 128GB of sitting around. Apart from the Thunderbolt port it has three USB-A ports, HDMI, and a headphone jack - and wired Ethernet, which is becoming a rarity these days. No microSD slot but I can get by without that.

It's a bit on the big and heavy side - it's a 15" model and the same size and weight as the 16" Gigabyte Aero I like - but it also has the advantage of being around one fifth the price of the Aero.

Which used to be a lot.

  • The RTX 4070 isn't selling so Nvidia is making less of them. (WCCFTech)

There's more money to be made selling high-end cards at $30,00 a pop to AI nuts.

The GPU market is AMD's to scoop up at this point but they haven't released any new cards since the 7900 XT.

  • The Asus Ally handheld game console should squish the Steam Deck in terms of performance. (WCCFTech)

It has 8 Zen 4 CPU cores vs. 4 Zen 2 cores on the Steam Deck, and 6 RDNA3 graphics cores vs. 4 RDNA2 cores. (RDNA3 is about 30% faster than RDNA2 for a given core count.)

Price and launch date have yet to be announced.

True. I've been placing stories on the 'Net and one print anthology, and earning a tiny tiny bit of pocket money, for a while. My judgment guided by experience, as Nero Wolfe always told Archie Goodwin, says the tale works as it is. I suppose I will try the rework, and run it past Miss Linda (who loves my fantasy stories), just to see.

The Philadelphia Athletics were a Major League Baseball team that played in Philadelphia from 1901 to 1954, when they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and became the Kansas City Athletics. Following another move in 1967, the team became the Oakland Athletics, their current identity and location.

So Philadelphia had two baseball teams for a number of years.

Since 2021, Sinema has spent nearly $20,000 worth of campaign donations on wine-related expenses alone — dropping thousands at some of the most exclusive vineyards on the West Coast including Promontory Winery in Napa Valley, Auteur Winery in Sonoma and Argyle Winery in the Willamette Valley, according to election filings.

They all act like modern day kings and queens. Good luck getting thru the eye of the needle.

94 Having tried to block new charter schools from opening and limiting the number that are available, now some lawmakers are pushing bills that would pull the rug out from under children already in charter schools.

Many charters, such as the aptly named Success Academy, start with elementary offerings and then open middle and high schools as their students age.

The bill would prohibit such expansion. If you open an elementary school, that’s it. Once the students get too old, nope, back to the failing neighborhood school.

Translation: the world has become grim and spiteful since Musk bought Twitter because he doesn't honor and respect the exclusivity these so-called journalists had not only come to expect but demanded.

>>Revolver article saying a new court filing connecting the 9/11 attackers with the CIA.
You know, I would now at least listen to the argument

Again, this all came out during the 9/11 Commission, the LE/IC apparatus of the US knew all of the hijackers were in the US, they knew their movements, they knew their finances, they knew they were going to flight schools, they knew they were up to no good.

But much like the FBI agents who sat watching as Islamists were going to murder Pam Geller, they sat back and "watched" like Chauncy Gardner, and then hand wave away their culpability in 9/11 by claiming to "lack the imagination," to understand what the terrorists were going to do.

They knew, they knew what was what, and they knew what the resultant response was going to be from the MIC/IC/LE Jock Sniffers.

As JackStraw is wont to say, we're basking in it.

110 It is humorously part and parcel with the cargo cult mentality of the Internet Imbecile Brigade: it's not your legitimacy as a fair and competent journalist that earns you a spot at the table. It's your spot at the table and a little blue badge you were given that confers legitimacy upon you.

Nevermind that the "check mark" was never intended to mean "this is a real devotee of Current Thing", it only was to mean "this celebrity account actually is the person it says it is and not a parody or spoof".

The first time they stripped a subscriber of their checkmark for WrongThink, i was gobsmacked. What, did they suddenly stop being who they are because they said WrongThing?

The creepy, insidious answer is: In the cult's mind, yes, yes they did.

>>I think the claim is that they worked for the CIA when they were trying to find who in Saudi was actually funding 9/11.

Sure, the LE/IC has many assets that go off the reservation, Osama Bin Laden being their biggest asset, The Vegas Shooter, Epstein, Timothy McVeigh, etc.

The bottom line is that 9/11, was in the final analysis, an inside job to achieve a Deep State end, much like the plandemic was used for an end, and fast and furious was meant to achieve an end.

The phrase, Everything is an Op is not some cutesy phrase that's thrown out casually, there are indeed entities conjuring events that will give them opportunity and space to, in the word prophetically sage words of the SCOAMF, allow for "fundamental transformation."

145 Home schooling is the only real option to public education but so many people are just not capable of teaching, let alone have the resources including time and content to do that.
Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead

I did a bit of research on home schooling (the Li'l Blutarskis were already out of the house) and was surprised that most days of homeschooling there was only about 2 hours of "class time". Seemed like the balance of the day was on home work and exploration, enrichment, etc.

My oldest (a girl) went through public schools. We thought our fancy school district guaranteed a decent education so we didn't have to pay much attention. Her junior high years were a waste. They spent three years socializing her for the next level. I don't remember her bringing a book home yet she got A's.

The boys were sent to private and had more writing assignments in one year than she did the rest of her public school experience. As a result, both high school and college were a breeze for them. Oddly, I was far more involved in their private and parochial schooling than I ever was in her public schooling.

I would definitely home school now.

182 From last thread about Ubuntu, I've had it for several years now and really like it, installed on an old Dell tower. It does the vast majority of things far better than anything Microsoft.
For some legacy things I maintain an old Dell laptop with Windows XP; and another laptop with Windows 10. Windows 10 is okay for mainstream casual users who don't want to screw around with Linux (understandable).
I do -some- very graphics intense world, and GIMP has been awesome (I started with PaintShop Pro, so have seen the changes; man, does Adobe blow).
I do no computer gaming. None at all. So have no clue what might be desired there but The Kid does, and she runs separate, dedicated platforms, not trying to make one unit do it all. Maybe learned it from me?
And YES, Linux community is absolutely their own worst enemy. They're horrible. In that snide, insular way that repels new users. It's still a great OP.

183 Amos Muzyad Yaqoob Kairouz (later Americanized to Amos Jacobs Kairouz) later really Americanized to Danny Thomas. He fervently believed "no child should die in the dawn of life," and went on to found the St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. Imagine what he could have accomplished if he wasn't one of those vicious Masons.

BREAKING: Ex-Buzzfeed editor Ben Smith now admits he knew at the time he published, in full, the fake Russia dossier that it contained "clear errors" -- in fact, one of his editors, Miriam Elder, warned “It is not just unconfirmed: It includes some clear errors.” He publ'd anyway

188 We wiped out TB until we let 40 million illegals in!

Well, yes. We shouldn't have let them in, but if 4O million aliens are coming to the nursing home service I'll have get more bread and grape juice.

Does that include all the casual Fortune 500 companies that run Windows? And GIMP is fantastic until it isn't.

190 Mornin', Miz Fen. I's happy to see you bringing such good news this fine day.

193 @280 SMOD- for the sake of argument I don’t think it means a thing. DeSantis hasn’t even declared yet so how many people think he’s actually running? Let him declare then see where everything falls.

194 >I'm thinking of buying an Acer Aspire 7

Okay, maaaaaybe they've improved their build quality in the past couple of years but Acer laptops have always been self-destructing hot garbage.

Fair point, It's been fifteen years since I last owned an Acer laptop. But this one is cheap and easy to upgrade and only needs to last until something better comes out, which probably means it will still be working fifteen years from now.

196 I know they tried to get into the enterprise space about eight years ago and when I mentioned their consumer products' poor quality reputation to their B2B rep she got extremely huffy and defensive, which is why we didn't buy any. But it seems they're at least trying. I don't know. I've seen too many Acer laptop cases literally crumble under normal use to trust them.
