Daily Tech News 27 March 2023

Top Story

  • Microsoft needs to stop shoving crap into Windows. (Tom's Hardware)

An evergreen story, but in particular this time about the MSN news that is shoved down your throat unless you go through and switch it off in seventeen places. The Start Menu search will still look things up on Wikipedia which is something that nobody on the planet has ever wanted and I don't know how to turn that off.

Tech News

  • If you remember my experiments with AI image generator Midjourney from a few months ago, well, that was version 2, and they're now on version 5, and it's improved just a tiny bit.

Hands are still its bête noire, but it's improving there too. I only had to retry that one once.

If you want something that looks like hand-drawn art it can do that too.

The old version was very good at generating body horror and Lovecraftian creepiness; I'll have to try that again and see if the changes have removed that or if it's still lurking.

  • The Arduino Uno R4 has been announced, with 16 times the RAM of the R3. (Tom's Hardware)

That brings it up to 32k. Yes, kilobytes. Yes, the R3 has 2k of RAM.

  • Amazon has released Mountpoint, an open source tool to mount S3 buckets as truly awful filesystems. (InfoQ)
Oh no, what has AWS done? I didn't spend fifteen years yelling at people not to use S3 as a file system just to be undone by the S3 team itself!
S3 is absolutely awful at managing files. It's as effective at that as a bucket is at holding angry bobcats. Treating it as a filesystem just makes that all the more painfully obvious.

Disclaimer: Ask not what your country can do for you, ask rather what's in this box labelled 'DANGER SALMONELLA'. Oh, it's turtles.

Posted by: Skip at March 27, 2023 04:05 AM (xhxe8)

7 Evening and morning to all! The first AI sample, Pixy, looks fantastic. Well, both do, but I'm a human and a redhaired human girl will always appeal to me more than a wizard mouse. The pic of the girl is nearly photographic, as if someone had traveled in time with a 35mm camera and taken a portrait of a Victorian merchant's daughter who is obsessed with clocks and watches.

I don't find the hands to be unrealistic. Oh, I see, that's the second pass? They are good.

I am very much a user of teh sooper ghey computer and not at all a technician, so your comment about the insidious propaganda from MS among others was especially satisfying. But what to do about that? Is there an open-source option? Likewise for word processing(LibreOffice for example?); is there an option that does not demand our adherence to its' rules?

My boss was about to recycle a Lenovo laptop with a big screen and lotsa memory, so I took it over. He'd scrubbed all the useful apps from it (though it's still Win 10). I quickly loaded OpenOffice, Irfan image viewer, VLC Media Player, and CCleaner, and can use it to play vids and images and documents -- which is a lot of my computer usage. Since I'm not connecting it to a network for 'Net browsing, a lot of the nagging Windows and most browsers do is off the radar.

17 Wolfus, you have my deepest sympathy!

I spent January-August ('82) in Pensacola... yuck! The Gulf Coast IS NOT FOR ME. [Apologies to any other 'rons or 'ettes in that area...]

Then you know. . . .

Oh, I have A/C at home, quite good. It's the only thing that makes this pesthole tolerable. Most stores are okay, though I went into a Petco and a Ross, and then a local coffee shop, on Saturday morning and found all 3 to be under-cooled. I got the coffee shop people (who had the temp set at 74!) to set it down some, and things improved.

Pensacola at least has offshore breezes, which might ease things a bit. We have gummy southern winds that do nothing more than move the moisture around a little bit.

I'm 1000 per cent with you. But here I have to listen to people who tell me how terrible winter is, and how wonderful summer is. Yeah, right. Let 'em work *outdoors* one day -- not play in their gardens, but work driving an un-cooled van and moving boxes. They'd sell their shriveled raisin souls to get back into the A/C. (H/T to Stephen King for the phrase)

I'm in the "intermountain desert" and it is FKing HOT in July & August here. Oh, well... it's a dry heat...

Seriously, it doesn't feel as bad at 10-20% humidity vs. 100%.

The remainder of each year is tolerable.

61 Hahaha

The MSN article is propaganda about propaganda

"Hid the COVID truth.” However, when I clicked through to the actual story, its own headline was much less accusatory and read “Fauci Says He's Always Been 'Honest' as COVID Origins Questions Raised.” So, while the headline itself lent the impression that Dr. Fauci was caught lying, the article it linked to merely pointed out that Fauci was subject to criticism from politicians who think that he’s not telling the truth. That’s a big difference. "

-

It literally uses the term conspiracy theories.

85 The newspaper reported that the edits cut references to ethnicity, such as describing a character as black, Jewish or Gypsy, or a female character’s torso as “of black marble” and a judge’s “Indian temper”, and removed terms such as “Oriental” and the N-word. The word “natives” has also been replaced with the word “local”.

Among the examples of changes cited by the Telegraph is the 1937 Poirot novel Death on the Nile, in which the character of Mrs Allerton complains that a group of children are pestering her, saying that “they come back and stare, and stare, and their eyes are simply disgusting, and so are their noses, and I don’t believe I really like children”.

The thickness needed to block a given frequency of EM is dictated mostly by how transparent or scatter-y the material is at that frequency, so lead must be only somewhat transparent in gamma (very short wavelength/ very high frequency and energy)... and what it does at any point in the spectrum is independent of what it does at other points. So there isn't much you can say one way or the other about radio transparency based solely on gamma transparency. Or vice versa. I already forget what the hell the point was.... moar coffees.
