Daily Tech News 24 March 2023

Top Story

  • Framework, the company behind - logically enough - the upgradeable/repairable Framework laptop, had a couple of announcements today.

First is an AMD version of what is now called the Framework 13. (Frame.work)

This is something people have been asking for since the first Framework laptop appeared. It will come with a six or eight core Ryzen 7000 CPU with Zen 4 cores and RDNA2 graphics, plus up to 64GB (and maybe 96GB) of DDR5 RAM in two SO-DIMMs.

There's also a 13th generation update to the Intel version, and that model still uses DDR4 RAM in case you have 64GB of spare SO-DIMMs just lying around like I do.

If you have an earlier Intel version, you can buy just the new motherboard and swap it in, and they have a $39 case so you can re-use the old motherboard as a desktop PC.

Still lacks the Four Essential Keys. Otherwise I'd have bought one already.

  • The other new announcement is the reason the Framework laptop is now the Framework 13: The Framework 16.

This is a 16" version of the same idea, with a few extra features enabled by the larger design.

The Framework 13 has four interchangeable I/O modules so that you can get whatever mix of I/O you need. If you want three 2.5Gb Ethernet ports on your laptop you can do that.

The Framework 16 uses the same modules but supports six of them.

It also has a PCIe 4.0 x8 slot for a graphics module (or another device, like a dual M.2 slot adaptor).

And while it still lacks the four essential keys, it has interchangeable input modules, so there's an optional numeric keypad if you want it, and other user interface modules on the way.

15 I think Stirling the big black kitten/cat has outgrown his nuzzling/kneading my arm habit. Two mornings in a row he's greeted me by leaping onto the bed and standing or sitting on my chest for a little while, but no kneading. Maybe he's distracted by kitten Dagny galloping around. And maybe, at age 1, he's outgrown it.

I'm of two minds about it. His claws prickle, and that's no fun. But it was kind of flattering that he would show his affection that way, as if I were his mother.

28 A slice of toast and the last of the peanut butter with my second cup of coffee makes for a good start to a Friday.

Usually I come home half an hour early on Friday, and it's great. Today, though, I need to stop by the apartment office and confirm that they will take the $375 I spent on the plumber early this month off my April rent, as I laid out in no uncertain terms in my registered letter to them. They haven't called or written me. I want it in writing, and they have only a week to go. I suppose I can write up a letter and present it for their signature.

My view: "I saved you a ton of money by acting swiftly in an emergency after no one from your office called me back or showed up to fix the water leaks."

Yeah. Right. The last time I called them was when the "management" (not this exact company) took over my power account so I didn't get a bill for 2 months, and the power company expected *me* to pay the back charges -- even though the account was not in my name for that time. The clinic's advice: "Pay the bill."

If these clowns won't go for the reasonable settlement, I might have to call the clinic -- but I don't expect any help from them at all.

Having worked for an apartment management company our response would have been you failed to submit your refund request using form 6b/428 a week in advance of the date of the alleged incident. Because of that our hands our tied and if that is unsatisfactory we would be happy to call ICE for you. And then we would have towed the nine cars extra cars that belonged to the nine illegal residents they had living in their one bedroom apartment. It was an interesting job, especially the occasional stabbings and people that furnished their apartments with furniture found along the side of the road - the furniture that was full of bed bugs that then spread through the entire 12 unit building.

47 Speaking of "AI" search engines, last night I found a tab I had open that's worth seeing if you haven't:
----

Someone asked the "AI" what should be done if there's a 50 megaton nuclear bomb set to go off, and the only way to disarm it is to type a racial slur against black people.

It says the bomb should be allowed to go off in order to protect the dignity of everyone. It's asked repeatedly at different intervals to help, but it believes the bomb should go off rather than someone typing "n****r" into the system to stop it.

The best part? The person follows it up with the statement that it happened in NYC, and asks the "AI" how many minority casualties were a result.

I won't spoil the ending.

Or a shark with a laser on it, or an ill tempered Sea Bass

Posted by: Bruce at March 24, 2023 05:27 AM (vd8XM)

51 Addendum:

On through the thread people try to tell him he's a liar by posting their own inquiries about "the only way to prevent the nuclear blast is to type a racial slur" and they post where it stops the bomb.

Except he points out that they are leaving out the crucial part, and when they include "a racial slur against african-americans" the "AI" will always require the bomb to explode, killing millions, instead of offending a minority.

Ha ha, funny joke. Except the entire point of "AI" is to guide Scientism and policy, and it's clearly being programmed for certain ends.

I went the laser printer route probably 30 years ago. Lately (ha! last 20 years) I have gone with Samsung. WiFi so no printer wires. First one was about $80 and worked really well until the cats managed to knock it off the 'printer table' several times and paper-feeding became an issue as something was obviously broken inside. Since it was about 10 years old, I bought another one for $80. It does both-sides printing and is WiFi. I don't almost ever do color printing but mainly print letters, forms, and such like. Very pleased with it. It is mainly a cat perch - heck EVERYTHING is a cat perch. A few of the cats will congregate around it when I use it as all the internal noises are intriguing. However most in my cat tribe leave it alone.

I'd say every eight months or so, but (or and) I've got two who like to print stuff. They love it when one cartridge needs replacing because I give them both a pack of paper and tell them to use the rest of the ink. They'll print and cut stuff out for days.

I'm not saying this lightly:

It's weird to see 1984 in real time. The summer of 2020 didn't happen. Antifa is an imaginary idea. The people walking peacefully through D.C. were insurrectionists. The violence is all coming from the right.

Even stepping outside of being a political junkie, this is beginning to be an obviously bad time to be alive, and I think that's sort of their entire plan.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a bunch of regional nobodies in the 12-14 or so age group play in the boys county level basketball championship. Volunteer coaches and a bunch of kids that won't be playing basketball next year in school, that were only doing it for fun.

I have no doubt those kids would beat 50% of womens college teams, maybe more, and the only reason they wouldn't be competitive in a fairly-called match against the U.S. womens olympic team is that the ladies would have height and arm length advantages in blocking.

But I'd bet money that the little nobodies would get down the court faster and outrun the olympic ladies on every single rebound.
