Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Weekend Hobby Thread![]() Good afternoon and thank you for stopping by The Weekend Hobby Thread. It seems like every time it is my turn to write this thread I end up buying another tool. This past week a new 10" portable table saw ended up here at Casa Misanthrope. I hope that my first dealing with this item is not a harbinger of bad things. It turned out that once I got the saw out to my company car, it would not fit in the car. Fortunately for me I carry a knife and I was able to slit the box and put my new tool in the car. As I write this thread I have not put it together yet. But, I've been busy watching YouTube videos. My goal is not to earn the nickname Stubby............. It won't be long and I will not need an alarm clock. But, until that time perhaps I should build my own. Now that's a hobby project. We have a couple of southern Morons who seem to be fascinated by ice and/or frost and submitted the following photos: ![]() Good afternoon, A pic for consideration, just incase no one else believes AZ gets cold. My grandfather, a master machinist and tool maker, drilled all his grandsons on safety with a table saw. And it worked. No dangerous kick backs, not even close calls. The only time I got hurt was changing a blade on an unplugged saw. My hand with the wrench slipped. Needed a few stitches in my thumb for that one.

The arrival of Spring here in SoCal means humping it down to the marina with brushes, bucket, and rags. It's time to clear the winter's accumulation of sea lion shit from the decks, canvas and freeboard.
Those who don't have a convenient ocean may be surprised to learn that sea lions unload with a firehose-like blast that spreads their watery dung across a wide radius. And guess what? They're federally-protected! Anyway, after three hours of steady scrubbing the wee vessel is looking presentable, at least for now. Alcohol may be next on the agenda. Table saws tend to spiral cut your hand, which is almost always unfixable. They are also so incredibly easy to use that it makes people careless. In contrast, your brain tends stays focused in "danger" mode when you use a handheld circular saw, making you less likely to have a catastrophic accident.
That's why I now use my circular saw for everything while my table saw became a 600 pound granite workbench. Posted by: wooga at March 18, 2023 06:14 PM (OQLo+) Posted by: Harry Baggot at March 18, 2023 06:14 PM (qkngI) 61

Posted by: JTB at March 18, 2023 *** JTB, I've been exploring all kinds of tobaccos since I picked up the pipe again in Jan. '21. I've pretty much found that I like burleys and Virginias, both not too strong. Not a big fan of Latakia, though I will smoke an English now and then. Pretty sure perique is not for me. I bought a tin of Haunted Bookshop, partly because of the name, and thought I'd lit a cigar both times I tried it. I gifted it on to another pipe smoker. In your experience, are there pipe shapes that go best with certain blends? I've read, and have experienced, that Virginias do well in tall narrow bowls, and burleys in any kind of bowl. And I am taking a beer break from hanging siding boards on the south gable end of the house. Two more to hang on the West side, and I run into a big patch of conduits running up the wall from the service panel, and into the interior attic. I will probably box around them with some redwood 2X3's I have, and side over that. Want to avoid creating a ledge where the asshole doves can perch or nest.
Used up all my new shiplap, so I am butt-splicing boards together to get the requisite lengths. Two passes on each piece with a router nets me a 3/4" wide lap joint, and 3 screws and some Gorilla Glue make the joint sound enough that the "new" plank can be handled. 88- Was that the Van Gogh Experience with the digital light show on multiple screens and music?
Posted by: polynikes at March 18, 2023 06:27 PM Yes! It’s called “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience”. There are three segments if you pay the VIP entry. Music plays in the background throughout and there might be some spoken narration. The first is like a traditional walk through a museum where pieces of art and personal history is presented. In the second, you go into a massive room that projects his art on all four walls and you sit in cabana chairs at ground level. The third segment is the virtual reality piece. There’s a Monet show like it that’s supposed to be coming out this year. Posted by: Moonbeam at March 18, 2023 06:34 PM (rbKZ6) 100
My wife bought me a rather modest DIY table saw a couple of decades ago. I used it a lot then but not so much recently. Posted by: They intend to crash the banks with Trump's arrest at March 18, 2023 *** Collecting pipes, trying or mixing different blends, certainly that's the hobby aspect. The pipes are like little hand-fashioned bits of wooden furniture. I've bought one corncob and one hardwood pipe. As yet I'm not used to them; I've always been a briar smoker. Back in the '80s I did have a meerschaum, but I don't know what happened to it. Broken in one of my moves, I guess. I didn't have time to smoke a pipe this am, and no inclination this pm. Tomorrow, I guess: some Virginia flake in a small straight billiard I call "the captain's pipe" because of the 4 narrow gold rings, like a captain's uniform braid, on the stem. watched a little right off the bat, the guy didn't oppose the growth rings when he was gluing his material up, so you know he has no idea what the fuck he's doing and when you glue wood up on edge, if you know what you're doing, you don't need a mechanical advantage such as dowel pins. However, if you use dowel pins, you should size them. A sizer can be easily mabe from a scrap of iron and when you are gluing shit up, use wax paper in between stuff you don't want to stick together. 85 ... Hi Wolfus
I haven't found that bowl shape effects the tobacco. Maybe some feel it makes a difference but that isn't my experience. Since I smoke slowly, I seldom have a problem with the bowl getting too hot. I do prefer larger, thicker bowls because they fit my hand better. Nording free hand pipes are a good example. One of the nice things about pipe tobacco, and cigars, is there is room for personal preference. For instance, I don't usually enjoy oriental blends. Quality tobaccos well processed, aromatic or English, makes a difference, the rest is individual taste. One reason I enjoy Alan Harrelson's Pipe Cottage videos on YT is when he discusses a tobacco blend he likes he says why it appeals to him. He doesn't make a universal standard. (I also share his taste in poetry, philosophy, and literature.) Posted by: JTB at March 18, 2023 07:25 PM (7EjX1) 182
I'm going to sell off my vintage, cast-iron Craftsman 10" table saw. Not because it's not a great tool, which it is.
But because I can't keep up with keeping the top rust-free in this salty Galveston air. I'd suggest any buyer run it by a machine shop and have the top and wing-tables milled and re-trued, to get past the corrosion layer. Even keeping it waxed, it's been a losing battle here. Next one will be a Bosch folding contractor's table saw. It's about the most stable one to use that I know. And I think I'll have photos to MisHum in time for next week's thread, a set of newly made and installed gates for the 100" distance between my detached garage and the fenceline between that and my neighbor's house. It's about 98% done now, and shaping up nicely. Gonna let the rain chances and colder days go by before jumping back in to finish it off. Kudos to Polynikes for the painting. Would Hang! Good Enough Posted by: polynikes at March 18, 2023 07:13 PM (LN7ig) I hate that. I learned hand tools first, then went into power tools. I'm a hybrid wood dude. Hand tools for instruments, power tools for renovations. I do use handtools on renovations some times for real fine finish work, but what you'll never see me do is ripping an 8 foot piece of wood with a frigging hand saw. Thats just insane. My thinking is you really need to know both. I do think there are more shit carpenters out there than good ones these days though. Some are keeping it alive, but we might be a dying breed. Also on Table Saws. I rid mine of the blade-guard and anti-kick-back knife. I've seen more accidents with wood on a table saw BECAUSE of those devices.
Use push sticks, feather boards, and just stay the hell away from the blade. My motto when working the Table Saw is: "this bastard IS trying to kill me..." and work accordingly. Also. Use ONLY sharp and true blades, and use the RIGHT blade (tooth-count, kerf width), for the material(s) at hand. Very different blades for Rock Maple vs. Pine, and again, plywood is it's own animal altogether. Crosscut n' Rip cuts factor in, as well. *counts fingers* Yep, still gotz'em! The contractor saw that I used on the jobs is OK for what we were doing, but on a cabinet saw version the blade is set much farther back and is just more accurate.

- I like matches but I was given a Zippo pipe lighter that I've really come to enjoy. It's nice to have in the pocket, and if you're on a boat or other outdoors (breezy) situation it's reliable every time.
