A guy that worked for me bought a house with a grooving area, although it was called a sunken family room. He had small kids, so he filled it with the plastic balls like they had at Chuck E. Cheese. Pretty clever solution to a really stupid design choice.

The brits had a weapon similar to that. It was a belt buckle gun that fired when you raised your hands. It was only a single shot, but that would probably be enough.
It came with two rings attached by wire to the buckle. If you only raised one hand, the gun did not go off. Posted by: Chemist at February 10, 2023 10:18 PM (Mt252) 35

Contractor friend restored a John Lautner house at the top of the Hollywood hills with a built-in /"conversation pit", in steps/seating. At the bottom was the inside/outside pool. One whole wall swung out on rollers for summer evenings. Great bachelor pad, million dollar view. Maybe even better all round than his "Silvertop" house (trespassed when vacant as a teen).

That particular design of tire iron is also very inefficient for beating things to death. Not bad for changing tires, though. Posted by: Blanco Basura at February 10, 2023 10:26 PM (Bd6X8) 59
Yes, the social influencer with the tire, iron is pretty funny. When I was in Cozumel in December, a couple of social influencers showed up on the little beach at the hotel. Wearing thong bikinis began to video themselves exercising. This was very amusing as there was no one on the beach and it is a diver/family hotel so there was no one to pay attention. I saw them by accident as I was on a balcony overlooking the beach.

Tomorrow, the 11th, is a day of astro-gnomonical significance. It's the absolute minimum for the Equation of Time over the tropical year at -14 min and 15 s. Thus, local high noon will occur at the latest time of day per mean standard time. The exact value will depend on your longitude relative to the time zone center. Here, that will be 12:43PM (latest doesn't include DST, which will shift things forward an hour). This has some other effects. The length of the day, with day defined as sunrise to sunset has been increasing since the solstice. Relative to mean time, that increase has been biased toward sunset in the afternoon. Tomorrow, they will be equal and thereafter (for a while) the increase in the day length will shift toward the mornings. That is from day to day, sunrise will shift earlier more than sunset shifts later. "Length of the day" can mean two things. Most of the time, it's the one I mentioned above, sunrise to sunset. The other definition is the length of the apparent(true) solar day vs the mean solar day. The latter is constant (to about a millisecond over the course of the year), while the former varies from about 30s longer than 24 hours, to -21s. The longest solar day occurs right after the winter solstice, and the shortest around Nov 2. Tomorrow will thus be one of the four days per tropical year where the true solar day is exactly 24 hours long. I laid up with my second shot and hit a nice wedge up in the middle of the green for my third. I then heard a rousing round of applause from the parade crowd lining the road. I tipped my hat, as is custom. I then proceeded to miss my birdy putt to an audible "awww" from my gallery. Par wasn't bad for me. Posted by: Javems at February 10, 2023 11:21 PM (AmoqO) 175

Posted by: RickZ at February 10, 2023 11:15 PM (emlEe) I love loft apartments. The sense of open space is just kind of fantastic. I have had two so far. One was fantastic. Had skylights in the loft that just let in a shitload of light and made the apartment feel so open. Straight staircase, everything was good even though it was a fairly narrow apartment. Then there was the other one. It had to be the oddest layout of any apartment I have ever lived in. The bedroom was literally about twice the size of the living room. The loft was very small and the ... way to get up there was not so much a staircase as it was a ladder. Narrowest, shortest steps you can imagine. I did not have ajax, but there is no way in hell he would have been able to get up there. It was a very odd layout. Had the best water pressure of any apartment I have ever had, though. I take a whole head of garlic, chop the top off of it, drizzle with some olive oil. Bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes. Let it cool and squeeze the individual garlic cloves on to crackers, or a baguette. Peon's pro cooking tip. If making Kraft mac and cheese, or the store brand, which is usually better, disregard the instructions on the box.
Use a little less water, a lot less salt, and throw all the ingredients in the saucepan together, the noodles, the water, the salt, the cheese dust, the milk, and the butter. Add in some grated real cheese if you have it. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until the pasta is tender, meanwhile stirring constantly. Result is pretty darned close to real home-made baked mac and cheese, with a very creamy texture. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 11, 2023 01:43 AM (tkR6S) 371

I'm remembering. One of the suicide rims on that old truck did explode. And luckily while it was on the truck, and while I was driving it. It was an old Chevy C-70, c. 1967 or so. There have been several two-piece rims, but only one or two types were the true suicide rims. These had to be put together just right. If they got out of alignment, they would indeed explode on inflation. When this one exploded, it was due to rust. The little lip that held it together had rusted, and lost structural integrity. The truck had been sitting under the shed for about a year, and we got it out. I had pumped up all the tires, and drove it down the road. BOOM! It was the right inside rear. It blew one half of the rim off and wrapped it around the rear box springs. This was Pucker Factor. Posted by: Braenyard at February 11, 2023 01:54 AM (+kxsn) I did all ten wheels, plus a spare, for a Studebaker US6. 20" truck tires on 3-piece rims. Bust off the old crusty tires, sandblast and paint the rims and lock rings, after grinding out any divots on the lock rings and rim parts. New flaps, new tubes, new tires. Not having an inflation cage, I put two loops of heavy chain through the holes in the wheels, and around the tires, and secured with clevises, so if the lock ring failed, the chain would catch it. And I used an air hose with a locking tire chuck, so i could control the air remotely, while standing a few yards away. Not one lick of trouble. Posted by: JEM at February 11, 2023 02:01 AM (8erNz) We started using the balance beads at the one shop. It almost looks like sugar. Damn things are amazing. They adjust over time as the tire wears and keeps it in balance during the life of the tire. Little bit of a bitch getting them in through the valve stem, but with the squeeze bottle they kinda go right in. The customers love them. Not sure if they make it for car tires, but if anything you probably just use more than a motorcycle tire uses. Its a few ounces of beads in a harley tire. This is the honest truth. That little tire guy was so good, that those two competing tire places would each fight over him. One would hire him, then the other's business would suffer, and the other would hire him back at more pay. They soon realized that was a losing proposition. So they colluded. They both hired him. They went in cahoots on a service truck. They put a removable plaque thing on the side, where the name of either tire place could be swapped and put on. The little tire guy was on call for both of them in that truck. The problem was he'd sometimes forget who was supposed to be working for on a given call and wouldn't flip the sign right. That was just a minor problem. A time or two he messed up the billing and gave the customer the wrong place to pay. They didn't care, 'cause those errors would average out over the long run. Berserker will explain suicide shifter/clutches.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at February 11, 2023 02:21 AM (yMEwp) I won't ride them. If a bike comes in that has that we make the owner test drive it when we're done. The original setup was good, the pedal was a rocker/pendulum type thing, you press it forward and the spring kept the pedal locked, and the shifter was on a shift gate on the gas tank. Chuckleheads would mount a lever directly on the trans, and remove the rocker pedal and replace it with a regular pedal like a car, so it no longer locks, and then you have to reach behind you for the shift lever. Yeah, its suicide, hence the name. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at February 11, 2023 02:28 AM (VwHCD) 428

I've seen that little tire guy (he's dead now, Jim) work. He made it look easy, like child's play. His service truck had a big B&S powered two-stage air compressor on the back. Big ass air jacks, and big ass 1" drive impact wrenches. He had a flunky that rode with him. The flunky's job was to hand him tools. One time, we had him out for a rear tractor tire job out in the field. Daddy and I were going to help him. We realized that we'd just hinder, not help. Best to step out of the way, and let him do it. Imagine a loaded F-750 grain truck with a flat inside rear tire. That little guy could change that in 20 mins. He used a long handle tire hammer. Me, and Daddy either, couldn't handle a long handle tire hammer. With the long handle, you can get more force, but your control has got to be perfect, or you'll just beat up the rim. The little tire guy had perfect control. He'd jump when he swing. He take that big hammer and swing back it over his head. He'd jump in the air and come down with a big grunt, "Uhhhhh!". That hammer would hit and just the right place, and that bead would break and move. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at February 11, 2023 02:29 AM (Mzdiz) 431

The Little Tire Guy was indeed the John Henry of tire hammers. He would make changing a 20" truck tire look like child's play. One swing of the hammer, boom, bead was broken down. Flunky flips the tire over, another swing and the other bead is broken. Then flunky hands him the tire tools. Brief blur, the rim is apart and the tube and liner are out. Another blur and the tube is patched. Another blur and the rim is back together. Try that yourself, and you realize, damn that Little Tire Guy is the Greatest Tire Man of All Time. So. I was at a bar this evening, and a woman seated near me at the bar had hat and shirt with logos for "Nellis Auction". I asked her about it, and they have physical warehouses, in Phoenix, Mesa, and Las Vegas, but do only online bidding. New goods, returns, damaged goods, retail closeouts, etc.
Went to web site, registered to bid (free), and tried to bid on a Plasma cutter. Site won't accept my bid, gives a "bid undefined" error message. Made help desk request. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 11, 2023 03:23 AM (tkR6S) 457
