I think it's more accurate to say that the culture is in the middle of a long process of splintering. The whole mass media culture is changing from when Hollywood and the Big Three networks created American culture, to a certain extent, to a place where thousands of much small entities create a much more varied culture without much in the way of connecting it all together.
Disney is a remnant of the old way, the dying way. It is just hastening its status as a smaller player in the larger cultural landscape than it otherwise would be.
It's a larger version of the late night talk shows realizing they'll never get their big audiences back, so they just appeal to the audiences they think are around.

If we're talking about engaging in what is current and new, which is what the media presents to us, I'd say that none of it - none of it - is worth engaging in. We have a millennia's worth of classic (not just classical) music, art and literature to read and enjoy. There's more than enough there for us to learn and benefit from.
We're now in a modern-day Dark Ages. It was in the discovery of the old texts that we largely sparked the original Renaissance. We need to do the same today. Only when we provide something of substance to present to this culture will they turn back to what they threw away. In the meantime, our kids can benefit from the knowledge the current culture ignores.

Poverty may be viewed as a relative thing. A lot of people were poor in those days, even by the standards of the day. But around 4 million black people were slaves, and not free.
Was the South poor? Well, a lot of people in the South were poor, but about 10 thousand of the biggest land owners and slave holders were actually pretty rich.
The "book value" of the enslaved black men and women was more than the value of all the railroads and banks in the United States at that time.
Lincoln freed the slaves?
Hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers freed the slaves, because they won the war.
And it was a tragic war, with some of the best men in the country slaying each other. All because the richest people in the South who owned most of the slaves talked the majority into fighting a war for them.

The paper he signed only declared free slaves in yet unconquered territory, which was kind of meaningless, and that he was more interested in winning a war to assert the federal government's dominance over the states.
Whoever passed the amendments banning slavery collectively deserve more credit than Lincoln on that point.

Lincoln, however, was instrumental in the passage of the 13th Amendment, so saying he did nothing is just silly nonsense designed to malign him. Find more real ways to malign him than that.

It made it a fait accompli, since it guaranteed the practical end of slavery in most of the states in the post-war environment.
Had he not done so, there is some chance the war and post-war environment doesn't see a quick resolution on the issue.
The argument against it is Lincoln does not technically accomplish it, though he does in the practical sense.

The mistake is in thinking that the end of slavery after the Civil War was guaranteed.
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was a risk at the time he did it, not a sign of a further inevitability. It pushed the war goal beyond simply preserving the Union.

Was the South poor? Well, a lot of people in the South were poor, but about 10 thousand of the biggest land owners and slave holders were actually pretty rich.
The "book value" of the enslaved black men and women was more than the value of all the railroads and banks in the United States at that time.
Lincoln freed the slaves?
Hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers freed the slaves, because they won the war.
And it was a tragic war, with some of the best men in the country slaying each other. All because the richest people in the South who owned most of the slaves talked the majority into fighting a war for them.

As I noted jokingly yesterday. The radar collection reporter system has a filter on it to flag concerns. A slow moving balloon, is filtered out - not a threat. Because weather balloons, UFO's etc etc. Its not that we couldn't see it, it's that we didn't see it because they automatically filtered it out as being not concerning. In retrospect they went back and looked for balloons, and it popped right out. Because it was there all along.

Agreed. I like the man but he's way off base regarding Lincoln.
Shelby Foote phrased the emancipation proclamation as a sort of bet: to free the slaves, the Union Army would need to win battles and advance.
Psychologically, it was a huge step for both Lincoln and the North as it said out loud that Emancipation, not just re-union, was a war goal. John Andrew of Mass said it was 'a poor law but a mighty act' and that's how I regard it.
Lincoln did a lot hustling to get a proper constitutional amendment passed, so the idea that Lincoln didn't care about the issue is just revisionist history, the kind Razorfist has read too much of.

Retired US Navy Radar Tech here. This is EXACTLY correct. Almost all Air Search Radar systems have a built in filter, to lock out targets below a certain speed.... you can TURN IT OFF, but the default is to leave it on.
NORAD does not track crop dusters... or even Helicopters, and does not care private planes unless you are entering restricted airspace.

Articles of Confederation were clear on the permanence of Union. Countries are generally presumed not to be fragmentable by simple votes, which the Confederacy also held to be the true as they put down secessionists who sought to leave them.
I guess you could have an abstract moral argument about it, but the legal argument and historical argument, particularly in those circumstances, isn't there. Much of the territory was moreover held by purchase from the federal government.

And they're putting something like $300-500 million worth of new content on the service every month.
Covid gave them the idea that the theater was dead and they could finally achieve what these studios have wanted forever: a pay for play model where every time you view their content you pay them. No more buying a VHS and watching it until it falls apart. You pay regularly for the pleasure of access. Except...the cost to actually cover would require something like $40 monthly subscriptions. Which precious few people would pay.

And I agree, Aetius, we should look at people as a whole package. Some terrible people did good things. Some good people did terrible things. Its good to recognize both. I think Lincoln went way too far, but overall was a good president and a good man.
I think the South was right about states rights and individual sovereignty over federal power, and we've been suffering from that loss ever since. But in the same light as above, the rebellion was ABSOLUTELY about slavery, and the Confederate constitution several times in very explicit language enshrined slavery permanently into their law. Yes, we can argue it was about state rights -- but the focus and concern of those state rights was to retain slavery forever without any outside interference.
Again, there's good and bad in almost everything. Hitler loved dogs. That doesn't mean he wasn't also a horrible person.

My theory is that it has to do with the way that we've destroyed the social institutions which used to provide adults with connection and an outlet. Smaller families with kids further spread out, more relocations for work, replacing small-time sporting events and entertainment with video games and home theater, etc. As a result, people never grow out of the entertainment which they enjoyed as kids.

Yeah its a serious trend in omdern culture for adults to want to never grow up, never mature, and never change from their teenage years. Its not just "covered by parents insurance until age 26" Obamacare, its cultural and lifestyle. Its where all the bitching about "adulting" and how hAARRRD it is to raise a kid or keep a house and anger that they cannot play video games or go clubbing every night like they used to.
I mean, we're all guilty of it to some degree, because we're part of the culture and it seeps into us like black ink into rag paper. I play far too many video games, because it helps me escape depression and sadness in my life. My brother bought like 9000 DVDs to watch so he'd have anything he wanted on demand.
Nobody wants to grow up any more, and worse, society absolutely champions and celebrates this. Its okay to have some diversions and entertainment in your life, but that's not supposed to be the goal.

It varies by firm, but I think the Twitter experience has a lot of people asking some difficult questions and a lot more people clamming up in terror.
Musk fired 75% of Twitter. No remotely healthy, well-balanced company could survive that kind of decline. That's a tremendous reduction. Yet Twitter survived and appears to be doing well, releasing updates faster and the platform has better reliability.
That means that at least 75% of Twitter's workforce was doing things they shouldn't be doing. That's a wake-up call. I doubt that most high tech firms are as bad as Twitter, but I strongly suspect that basically all of them are looking a little more closely at things and wondering, "what do these people actually *do?*"
This is going to be a bad year for high tech.

Yeah, as an adult, your day should be mostly responsibility -- to your children, to your spouse, to your boss -- then when there's some free time, something for yourself. This idea that work is something we're forced to do in order to have all the neat stuff we want is completely wrong and incredibly corrosive.
Work is part of life, its part of being human. Its a goal in and of its self: contributing to society, achieving goals, doing the best job you can in order to glorify God, all the stuff the Protestant Work Ethic used to be about, that build this country.
The deliberate destruction of this concept goes straight back to communism. A nation that does not view work as an unjust burden imposed on them by an oppressive class is impossible to conquer with communism.

Academia creates a huge amount of drones that have no useful value aside from spreading wokeism. They have to go somewhere, and these days every corporation is being induced to import these idiots and destroy themselves until the few who are actually needed are outweighed by the woke.

Myself, I never owned slaves. And the Black people living today never WERE slaves. In fact, they have more opportunities now then when I was in high school. So perhaps I should be the one to get reparations. I had to go to work upon graduation from high school, even though I had the grades for college. But other races got scholarships before me, based upon their minority status.
I know, how about if minorities just stop using their minority status as a crutch, and be glad that they live in a country that allows them the freedom to attend college and study anything that they desire? And to move up on their own hard work, instead of trying to pull others down? Forget it, not going to happen.
