One of the things the F-4 is known for is those little sawtooths on the wings.
McDonnell-Douglas decided that their upgrade of the YF-17 was going to have them to. So the initial F/A-18s had them until everyone realized they were unneeded. Then the LEX vent generated vortices were found to cause the twin tails to wag like a hyperactive chihuahua. So they added stiffener plates to the tails. And when that didn't fix things they filled in the vents. Great design work McDonnell-Douglas. Posted by: Anna Puma at February 07, 2023 10:42 PM (Uf9wt) 209

Cobray purchased the rights to the design from the Military Armament Corporation and created its own smaller, lighter, cheaper version. Those who take shooting seriously consider the Cobray M11 “one of the most useless handguns in existence” and conclude that, “Everything about this gun just makes it hard to shoot accurately, so it’s much better to fire from the hip and keep your enemies guessing.”
Both the MAC-10 and the Cobray M11 are illegal to possess in California.|| Also had a suppressor and 30-round magazine, Posted by: andycanuck (Vwz3I) at February 07, 2023 10:45 PM (Vwz3I) 213

One of Mark Twain's early stories was about a blue jay that tried to store a nut in a knot hole in the board roof of a shack, and then when it disappeared he went to get some more to try to fill that knothole, until another bird checked and started laughing at him trying to fill up a house with acorns.

If you get back, the best ones (so far) in my experience, besides the two mentioned above - Yasukuni Shrine museum (Tokyo) Chiran kamikaze museum (outside Kagoshima) Tachiarai museum (airbase outside Fukuoka) Several more to hit, including the naval kamikaze museum (on base) at Kanoya, and the kaiten museum/base in Yamaguchi prefecture. there are a few degrees of normal and crazy, for sure. BUT some are far over the edge and have found their "true self" as members of the cult ... since they have no real true self based in personal development and accomplishment. So much easier to spew the Fauci lies (for example) and feel superior to all those that don't believe "Fauci IS Science".
It's that Mount Stupid (Dunning-Kruger effect) thang ... a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. But there are some that can wake up, that are just mildly lost in the maelstrom of lies. Bill Maher gives hints of some awareness, yet he ends his rant with "for years I tried to expose those ignorant conservatives for not believing in Climate Change, now I have the liberals going crazy". No Bill you ignorant slut, you are also wrong on "climate change". He is still in his cult, but he sees problems. Posted by: illiniwek at February 07, 2023 11:00 PM (Cus5s) 264

This contempt for the laity helps explain why vaccine skepticism is growing on the political right. Some of this skepticism is misguided. In the early months of the pandemic, thousands were dying daily from Covid. There was a political imperative to roll out vaccines as soon as it became clear they could prevent severe illness
When they introduced them they claimed you couldn't get COVID if you just took the original double tap. And that was the nominal basis for every clot shot mandate - that with the shot you couldn't spread it, without the shot you would. And we know that was not just wrong but an intentional lie. Now the claim is it "prevents severe COVID". The data says THE OPPOSITE. Posted by: 18-1 at February 07, 2023 11:03 PM (lc5cP) 272
One of the most interesting surviving battleships is the Monitor Huascar, now in the chilean navy. It was initially built for Peru by an English ship company in 1864 for their war against Spain, it was captured by Chile in the War of the Pacific.
It is an iron hulled monitor with a single turret, screw driven and one of the most advanced battleships of its time, and sports a ram. Iron hulled ship tactics had not quite gelled by that time. What is really sad is there are almost no English language sites with good pictures of it. https://www.huascar.cl/#galeria Posted by: Kindltot at February 07, 2023 11:03 PM (xhaym) 273

18-1, actually "we'll win anyway" doesn't at all imply "the whole of Ukraine", territorially speaking. Not their objective, clearly never was. Whether the true top goal - Ukrainian military non-alignment - can ever be attained, doubtful. Even if conceded in settlement, easily violated commitment over time.
Two eastern oblasts, obviously - biting off those two more in the south, which were never subject to Russian rhetoric, claims, or diplomatic efforts prior to 2/24/22 - that seemed like an expansion of territorial goals to me, and a puzzling mistaken one, but whatever. Fun fact: in the years of the "Minsk process", Moscow maintained that Donetsk and Lugansk were and would remain Ukrainian territory, that was there position. There's a popular/nationalist/tribal imperative to protecting Russian-speakers perceived as victims of persecution, there's always been a lot of leadership ambivalence about formal annexation. Until a year ago. Posted by: rhomboid at February 07, 2023 11:16 PM (OTzUX) 299

What Biden is doing to the practice of medicine.
Shift in prices, shift in credentials, shift in pay. Watch your doctor go away. We now have PA's (physician assistants) , APN's (nurse practitioners), primary Dr.s, and specialists. PA's can diagnose and prescribe under the authority of a Dr.. APN's can do same, even write class II scripts, but in many cases or states it is not necessary for them to work under the authority of a Dr. What's the shift? Primary physicians will disappear, being replaced by APN's and the PA's will move up the pecking order behind the APN's. Why? Money. Socialized Medicine Lite. Primary Physicians have a broad range of study and a focused (mine specialized in hypertension and related chemistry, fancy that) field of study. Along with that they have liability, and operating costs; APN's and PA's won't have that nor will they have the wealth of knowledge a primary physician has. If they are good they will have the basics down pat. - narrow and focused - cont. Posted by: Braenyard at February 07, 2023 11:16 PM (gVDpb) 302

18-1, ever since the authorities started to claim "prevents severe illness" (when was this, last year? very odd in any case, as a clear "back-up" benefit claim vs. true, sterilizing vaccine), I've been wondering how in the wide wide world of sports such an assertion could even be backed up by data.
How do you get good, clean samples for control groups for this? Previous infection history would be unknowable, since most infections are asymptomatic and anti-body evidence is temporary. So I've never understood how the comparison leading to such an inference could even be done. Of course I haven't checked with the useful independent sources on such things, but I looked around a bit a few times - nothing on it at all. gourmand, my favorite Japanese courtesy story (everyone has many) - arriving at the Osaka airport (KIX) one trip, believe it was the years of the ridiculous affirmative action "president", and naturally the dollar was way down against the yen.
The (very cute, naturally) clerk at the airport currency exchange booth, where I always picked up some yen for the bus trip to town, apologized (!) and looked slightly mortified when pointing to the (pathetic) amount of yen my $200 would get me. I konked out on the couch right when Miley left to run some errands. I roused up briefly when she got back. At some point, Big Jake, the orange tabby was walking over me. It was almost 8PM, and I turned it to Tucker. Next thing I know, I woke up and saw Brandon on the TV. I turned it off. Some time after that, Jake was insisting I get up and let him out. I noticed Miley was konked out on the bed. I then had to rouse up and get my father's pills together and go up there and pill him. I have just run across the most obfuscated, convoluted, overly complicated thing I've ever encountered. I've been playing around with writing some programs to tell me what time it is. All the times. As with most such things, the basic idea is simple, it's just the details, edge cases, and user interface that makes it complex. And so the question "what happens" if DST changes while the program is running? It should note that and handle it gracefully. Well, I though the Windows API time zone was a convoluted mess. Now I'm looking at how Linux handles it: The Olson TZ database, zoneinfo. That is the most complicated, convoluted, crazy stupid complex thing I've ever seen. I've got some ecru okra seeds. Can't wait to plant them! Also some reddish ones. We can have a go with shades of red, right?

Sooo, I went and had my yearly eye exam today. Get to the doctors office, and mask wearing is still in effect there. I was pissed. Nobody wears masks anymore around here. Yeah, you will occasionally see a future warlord's fuck toy wearing one in their car alone, but even that is rare. After that the doc says well I'll see you next year. I said not if you're still pulling this mask bullshit.

Posted by: Miklos is not the crazy one at February 08, 2023 03:27 AM (Inid0) The thing that pissed me off is I was going to acquire about glasses for shooting. This past texas MoMe was a disaster. It was the first time I shot a gun in probably 30 years. I couldn't see the gun sights, it was blurry, so I stuck on a set of readers. I then could see the sights fine, but then the target was blurry so i couldn't see where I was aiming. My long vision is fine, close vision not so much. I'm thinking maybe there is a prescription that will just make everything good. I really wasn't sure how to ask for something like that without saying why I wanted it. After that mask thing I was like no frigging way am i asking for that. Speaking of covid rants and such, Scott Adams is still very butthurt about being wrong about taking the jab. He's now talking about "did you calculate the risk from long covid?"

Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at February 08, 2023 03:37 AM (Mzdiz) 581
Scott Adams' problem is that he's making too big a deal about this. He bought into the Covid Terror, plain and simple. If you DON'T buy into the Covid Terror, why would you chance a dubious vaccine?
People took the jab because the gummint said if you do you can have your life back. The problem was that no one assassinated the bastards who shut us down. I think that would have save us a lot of hassle. Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at February 08, 2023 03:41 AM (Mzdiz) 582
Near as I can figure, "long Covid" is basically bullshit made up by Kovid Karens. Long term "sequelae" of viral illness has always been a thing. Some small fraction of people will have long term problems after recovering from a viral illness. This happens no more or less with Covid than any other one, looks like. "Long Covid" is just an excuse for more hysteria, and also a convenient bin to hide jab injuries. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at February 08, 2023 03:41 AM (Mzdiz) 583

Fking mask theater... ugh.
Our in-netw*rk medical community has *never dropped* the stupid mask requirement. The mind boggles. Individual physicians just nod & agree with diktats from on high, while telling us-- in hushed tones, of course-- they acknowledge it's a farce. Do they really agree with us? Or are they faking us out, drawing us out like O'Brien, only to make some notes in our files which put us in the commie Book Of The Dead? One of the questions my doc asked me yesterday was about the jab. I told him I had to get it due to the job making me get it. Didn't want to get fired. I only got the initial 2 and never got any of the boosters. The dr then went on another rant about that. Lots of quiet discontent in the medial world due to an overbearing government. Again, it was interesting.
