The Saturday Night Joke

The Greeks Vs The Irish

Over a double Latte, the Greek mentions "We built the Parthenon you may recall, along with the Temple of Apollo."

"Aye, and it was the Irish that discovered the Summer and Winter solstices."

"But it was the Greeks who gave birth to mathematics."

"Granted, but it was the Irish who built the first timepieces."

Knowing that he's about to deliver the coup de grace, the son of Athens points out with a note of finality: "Keep in mind that it was the ancient Greeks who invented the notion of sex as a pleasurable activity!"

"Aye! True enough, but it was the Irish who got women involved."

Their citizens work in research labs. We fund bio-engineering research in their country. They produce components for our military. We set up our semi-conductor facilities in their country. They make the smart phones in everyones pocket. Our government officials use their state-run social media platforms. They fly satellites over our country round the clock. We've moved 60-70% of our industrial base to their country. They own agriculture and meat manufacturing facilities throughout the country. They hacked our DOD. They stole government laptops. The are married to our Senators and Congressional members.

I think whether a person likes video games is based on personality. I started playing video games as soon as they became available for home desktop computers, and had to be careful not to play to much. Inspector started playing them early enough that he had to make the computer so he could play the game. My sister never played at all- until phone games became a thing, a now she has to be careful not to play too much.

341 Berserker. Many have complained about the "no free lunch" physics of lofting a few Rods from God into orbit, vs their effective "payload" upon delivery.

Quite missing the point. The payload is near-nuclear in effect, non-nuclear in side-effect.

A constellation of as few as a dozen of them in various orbital inclinations (looking somewhat like the Atomic Symbol itself), would likely put a Rod into a launch position over any point on the planet at intervals of minutes, and the delivery arc is with very short warning, indeed.

I think it's a good Shot Across the Bow munition. Ignore two or three of these, and we all know what escalates from there?

I played 100's, probably between 3-400. One of my old bass players was a game nut too. Back in the 90's we used to hit fleamarkets when they would be practically giving away older games and load up. Sometimes we would find games for under $5. I don't know, there was a certain charm to games back then. Its not like it used to be.

345 >> hard to sell the idea that a culture could be capable of interstellar travel and at the same time vulnerable to Earth jet fighters one on one.

That reminds me, from back when Art Bell ruled the night, about a Roswell guest he had on.

Anyway, his premise was we got lucky, million to one shot doc, with the alien craft. He used the analogy of say some primitive apes managing to take out a SEAL team. Pure luck, the advanced SEAL team let down their guard at the wrong time, and one of the apes managed to throw a rock and hit one of the head, which started a cascade of failure.

Fascinating idea.

I'm trying to remember that Art Bell discussion. Basic premise: aliens are out there, and they're routinely monitoring the primitive primates on the 3rd rock from Sol. It's not continuous monitory, just every so often, they check in and see what's going on.

Then, we go nuclear. Wow, the primitive monkeys have developed nuclear tech. Let's check that out. They whip in, and start flying around our nuclear sites. We freak out.

IIRC, speculated maybe we lit them up with powerful radar one time time over Roswell, and they weren't expecting that. Their last update on the primitive monkeys didn't include the radar thing, and they weren't prepared.

Insert Star Trek techno-babble (the radar field messed up the graviton flux capacitor array on the aft deflector dish, causing a sub-space field pulse that took out their inertial dampers...) causing the ship to crash.

351 So I'm barely starting to figure out whether I've worked myself far enough just in the aged rum lane to pay the $$ for some limited edition high-proof high-funk Guyana rums - as occasional, special sips - and then we stumble upon this great cozy speakeasy bar at a Japanese restaurant, and I have my first Japanese whisky, which was excellent.

Look, I don't have enough time, $ or metabolism to explore all this s**t. Just stop making this stuff, will ya?

It's like WWII history. OK, stop, there's more than enough. Then it turns out there's a lot more, and what you thought you knew you didn't, or at least you have only grasped a tiny portion of the whole.

369 Still sorting drills. Got most of the little wee ones done; now I am mostly doing quarter-inch and larger. Some have there ends ground square to cut like an end mill, so I am putting them with the mills, reamers, and center drills. Getting a pretty good selection of both number and letter drills, too. Many are TRW cobalt drills. Some real fine stuff. all in a tub that cost me ten bucks.

Dr. Brackett, Robert Fuller, is still alive. He's 89, but doesn't get out much any more.

He mostly played cowboys, this Dr. thing on Emergency! was a fluke -- they had to talk him into taking the role.

True Fact: Robert Fuller was the first American to receive the Japanese Golden Order of Merit. The Empress of Japan personally dubbed him with that honor.

371 The best games I ever played were pinball machines in dive bars with my friends, it used to be a lot of fun.

Have we ever met? I must have played 1000 pinball games in sundry sleazy bars.

(Debby thinks that guy is pretty good, but is splitting a root beer float with me)

372 I swear, waiting for glue to dry is like watching paint dry. Gotta be a joke in there somewhere.

373 Pinball was so much fun! There used to be machines in every bowling alley and tavern. Now it's all video crap. Meh.

Pool was fun too. There used to be two pool halls in town-- regulation tables, rent by the hour. Could just play and play, get uninterrupted practice, without 'losing the table on a challenge' like the vendo-tables in bars.

At least with paint drying you don't have to worry (much) about coming back to find the piece was anchored correctly, slipped, and has now dried very firmly in the wrong place.

Anything requiring reflex speed and coordination is a no-go for me. Which is why I don't play shooter games on the computer either.

I like MMOs because I like exploring *but* I loathe beyond words being tired, cold, wet, hungry, or in danger. MMOs are pretty much the only way to square that circle.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 12, 2023 02:26 AM (nC+QA)

377 Shockingly narrow minded of your opponents.

I've been playing Marco Polo with the cat (out of water) lately. He meows and I answer "Polo" until he finds me. Why no, my life isn't boring. But it's mostly because I make sure it isn't by playing Marco Polo with one cat and teaching the other to bark.

378 If I had a large enough house, would put in a pool table. It's relaxing (for me) to play. Used to be pretty good. Was often asked to 'sub' on leagues here, though never wanted to join up for regular play. Didn't like the pressure of all that.

I don't have those problems. I'm a preeefessional. lol

Actually, a pin nailer is a gift from the gods. Fires a small 23 gauge headless pin thats just about invisible. If you got a tricky glue up where you can't get a clamp on it OR you don't want it to slip, OR you can't sit there for 15 minutes holding the thing the pin nailer is the bomb.

381 Well, finally done sorting drills. I didn't keep count, but it's a whole ramen tub, chock full. Number, letter, and fractional sizes, plus some that may in fact be metric. The unknown ones that did not jibe with my fractional drill gauge, I calipered and labeled them in millimeters, because it's so much easier to read a vernier in tenths of a millimeter than in 64ths of an inch. I can use a metric equivalent chart to see if any of them jibe with the number or letter series.

Anyhow, I am about done for the night. Night, Horde.

Heck, maybe won't even be able to afford food if fjb and co. keep going with their bs.

392 >I'm looking forward to the aliens buzzing over the Big Game and hijacking the halftime show like Bane.

Bane told people to surrender while the literal message was 180 "take control, people". Hostile gray aliens might want to do that, but get in line.

395 The Irish did not invent the first timepieces and certainly did not "discover" the winter and summer solstices.

Imagine being so crap you have to lie about achievements.

They're ugly as well.
