26 I wish I lived in a house like that.

One of my dreams is to move far away and live in a rambling, tumbledown old mansion tucked away at the end of a mile-long avenue of weeping willows - the kind of house that makes locals shudder, "That old place gives me the creeps!"

But, like all of my dreams, it will never happen.

Posted by: rickb223 at February 07, 2023 09:36 AM (SZVQq)

34 Funded by Cooke (the director of the Northern Pacific Railroad), and Scribner's Monthly, a new illustrated magazine, Moran agreed to join the survey team of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 in their exploration of the Yellowstone region. During forty days in the wilderness area, Moran visually documented over 30 different sites and produced a diary of the expedition's progress and daily activities. His sketches, along with photographs produced by survey member William Henry Jackson, captured the nation's attention and helped inspire Congress to establish the Yellowstone region as the first national park in 1872.

Interesting cite. In the laws of Hammurabi, the penalty for a building code violation was to have the builder and his family constrained within the building, and have it knocked down on them.

The cemeteries with the above-ground marble tombs are beautiful. However, there's a little potter's field in the middle of the city, hidden behind a junior college campus there. Instead of headstones, it has headboards, white-painted planks with hand-daubed black lettering, and a lot of the graves are choked with weeds. It's not so much creepy (though at night, I guess it would be) as it is sad.

The legend says that since the Superdome was built over the remnants of an old Indian or black cemetery (the stories vary), that the angered spirits were responsible for the Saints being a losing team for so many decades. Said legend does not explain how the spirits allowed the Saints to become Superbowl winners, though. Maybe they just got tired of cursing in eternity.

One of the very first graveyards in the French Quarter is long gone, built over a very long time ago. I wonder if there are spook legends in that block?

I liked those books a lot, and read them several times as a kid. I recall liking the movies when they came out, and watched them with my old man. I thought they did a good job.

But that was then, and this is now. If anyone in American entertainment today uses a property, they will butt-rape it to death and wear its skin in a grotesque, woke parody of whatever it once may have been.

I'm unclear as to why people are watching anything anymore. You have two choices: superheros and dogshit, and there's a lot of overlap there.

My thing is just watching JCVD jump-kicking bad guys. Or whatever old stuff people here recommend. I got that Dark City movie yesterday on the recco from TJM and others. Can't wait to watch it. Since it's a quarter-century old, it's likely not a heap of woke shit.

Hopefully you'll enjoy it. I'd recommend starting with the director's cut, if that's an option. The theatrical cut spoon feeds some exposition at the beginning that robs the film of some of its mystery.

292 Why was the balloon remains turned over to the FBI instead of the USAF's National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC)? I used to work as a contractor for NASIC and I can tell you that they are far better qualified to analyze the debris than the FBI. I guess the reason is that the FBI is so thoroughly corrupt it will give the administration whatever results it requires.

Pseudo-philosophy is no basis for a movie. It both gets smaller scale and much larger. Up to that time, they are working within the bounds of the universe's rules (universe being the matrix) then they step 'outside the bounds'. Now that may be sort of interesting, but it gimps your story hardcore because anything can happen because you say it did. That is why the sequels fucked up royally because they sort of understood that strictures make a plot interesting, but at the same time they wanted to maintain the power fantasy and it just went silly because they are idiots.

I think the sequels are fine, but they really don't take advantage of the implications of the ending of the first one at all (the fourth film is pretty much just trash, though).

If I were to write sequels to The Matrix, I'd have everyone in the resistance able to do what Neo can do in terms of flying around and stuff and mastering the physical realities of life in the Matrix while Neo is deconstructing code all around him. Agents can't get within a hundred feet of them because he just tears them apart with his though.

So, the Matrix panics, sends the diggers to Zion with the added twist that yes, this is the sixth Matrix, but they've delayed the one intentionally because the reset is so destructive, so they ended up making an even more powerful One that they can't defeat.

Need to balance the conflict in two dimensions. A battle across virtual reality and actual reality isn't too different from a battle across multiple planes. So military operations supporting jumps into the Matrix akin to the prison breaks of the first movie.
