The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The Woke curriculum that is pushing out classical education is going to be the death of traditional academia in America. Add to it the ferocious censorship of anything remotely resembling heterogeneity of thought, and in many cases actual violence in response to any expression of political or social philosophy that does not embrace a ridiculous and anti-freedom litany of equity and BLM and trans-rights and anti-Israel/Zionism and anti-free-markets and post-modern analysis and the rest of the orthodoxy that passes for intellectualism on America's campuses, and you get a recipe for failure.

Fine. Have at it. But realize that your precious universities will lose a significant portion of the students who pay the bills and go to class and get jobs and donate to alumni funds. Because they are completely alienated by the insanity that passes for education.

Ah...they'll just expand access to those wonderful universities to "underserved segments of society." That is doublespeak for "dumbshits." Let us not pretend that it is anything other than a frantic scramble to exclude the people who succeed and include the people who have no business being on campus. You know...pathetic SAT scores and mediocre GPAs from awful high schools. These are the people who need remedial writing and math (arithmetic probably) classes...in college! But they are reliably leftist, and will accept the indoctrination without complaint.

Hillsdale College Sees 53% Increase in Applications as More People Reject Wokeness

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, enrollment in colleges across the nation has decreased by roughly 13%. While many colleges struggle to draw in students, many faith-based universities are seeing a boom in applications, championing the classical curriculum over woke ideologies.

"Seeing a boom" is a bit imprecise, but if there is a significant increase in enrollment in schools where the education is delightfully anachronistic...a classical liberal arts education, then it bodes well for America.

If I were hiring for positions that required reading and writing and thinking skills, I would prioritize these folks over anyone coming out of the leftist diploma mills.

Like the State University of New York System!

Recently, the State University of New York (SUNY) system will require all new students to take courses related to social justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion beginning fall 2023.
Sadly, it used to be an excellent system, where New Yorkers could get a solid education for a reasonable amount of money.

The last time I checked, the population of New York state was decreasing, which may mean that the enrollment in its state universities is declining. I wonder if these sorts of changes has anything to do with it?

When you realize that's the goal of all Communist takeovers, and you see what the left in the US (and West in general) is doing, it makes a frightening amount of sense. Even the unlimited migration...importing millions of foreigners, and not expecting them to assimilate, furthers these goals.

And any structure where the consumer does not have the ability (or care) to evaluate the alternatives, persuasive snake oil salesmen will always crowd out the good providers.

I have not given so much as one thin dime to my college. Initially, this was because they screwed me over in a pretty shitty way.

Then, it was because that school was way too expensive. It was too much when I went, and is even more now. The board put out this big cost-control plan that was useless. I wrote a rebuttal and sent it to the alumni magazine. They did get back me, to tell me that they would not be publishing my rebuttal because their plan would work.

Then the wokeness. Always the wokeness. It's despicable and corrosive. When they solicit me for money, I say, "the College's values are diametrically opposed to my own. Every time the alumni magazine comes, I read more about how evil I am. do not willingly give money to people who want me dead."

52 the change in obtaining a college degree is remarkable

In 1982 I entered University of Houston after working for six years after high school. The economy at that time absolutely sucked and illegal immigration decimated my house framing company.

It cost me about $500/semester, half tuition and half books. Most of my classes started at 5pm or later because UH was a commuter school. I crammed that 4 year degree into 5 and graduated with a civil engineering degree.

My sons attended UT and A&M 15-20 years later and by the time they graduated it cost about $5,000 per semester.

I shudder to think what it costs now. I think STEM colleges should band together and eliminate a lot of the crap that most universities require.

It depends on who's moving. If it's parents with older teenagers, it could be a factor. If it's parents with adult children or no children, the population outflow doesn't matter (as far as enrollment, anyway). If it's parents with young children, it will matter but not for another several years.

63 The best thing that can happen to America's colleges and universities is to cut off the money spigot. Get rid of the nationalized student loan system and return it to private banks. End the student loan exemption in bankruptcy and let money get expensive. End government student aid. End the FAFSA system.

The colleges will, probably in the majority, go bankrupt. Good. It needs to happen. Education is important and we need colleges and universities. We do not need *these* colleges and universities. They need to be driven into bankruptcy so someone else can buy the ruins and rebuild.

This will happen at some point anyway. Even with lots of financial game-playing, it's catastrophically expensive - and it is decreasingly worth it.

Sort of like the cargo cult in the SW Pacific in the 1950s. They saw people building runways on empty islands in 1943, and then magically, airplanes started arriving loaded down with goods. So, all one needs to do is build some runways to become better off in all ways. ...

There's a bit more to it than that, though "college degree == employment opportunity" is at the point of received wisdom and default position. There are a ton of reasons for it, from the WWII GI bill, the Vietnam War, the Chevron decision, etc. It isn't quite fair to label it as cargo cultism, but nowadays it might be a distinction without a difference because the causal factors were pretty long ago and the default position is just believed automatically.

85 The lock-downs ended up gutting the universities' international student body cash cow. So now they are trying to find replacements. I'm also not surprised they are grabbing at the low end either. If the student is funded entirely through government loans, the unis still get their money, and they can both charge it for less work and keep the students longer.

In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa's problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn't even notice. Only the functionaries would be hard hit. Which is why they maintain that the world would stop turning without this development aid.

Local farmers may as well put down their hoes right away; no one can compete with the UN's World Food Program. We have a similar problem for different reasons. Students often leave after they've failed calculus, then go and take calculus at a junior college. They may or may not come back. Our math department is freaking out because the Chancellor is seriously pissed off about this. If students can successfully navigate the math courses (which are deliberately made more difficult than they need to be), there is a very good chance they'll complete their degree.

174 There's a bit more to it than that, though "college degree == employment opportunity" is at the point of received wisdom and default position.

See, in a couple decades the last of the classically taught engineers are going to retire or die. That leaves the woke generation(s) of DEI trained craftsmen and engineers to maintain and rebuild the country's infrastructure.

It's bad now, but it's going to get much, much worse.

Try finding someone who can repair or work on something built prior to 1970. And while you can train yourself to do some of the work, there are bridges, buildings, aircraft, ships, electrical grids, manufacturing plants, etc. that will need educated people to run and maintain them.

Good luck with the woke generation being able to deal with that.

DeSantis has reallyed the way, and some states are starting to follow. Iowa is pushing more and more "red" legislation at the state-level, in education and all sorts of other areas. Governor Reynolds gave the 2022 Republican response to the SOTU, and I think she has aspirations for higher office. Even our DU friends have noticed, while bitching about DeSantis:

Covid Kimmy in Iowa is already getting the legislature to cut/paste these to Iowa In an effort to bolster her veep chances next time around, Reynolds and the rethug legislature are taking those laws and trying to ram them through Iowa's state house.

Given the heavily gerrymandered maps of Iowa at both the state and federal level, she and the other facsists will succeed.

229 We have a similar problem for different reasons.
Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at February 07, 2023 11:33 AM (YIVH2)

Mathematics is mostly a service faculty for the other STEM majors. Scarcely any student takes introductory calculus with the intent of pursuing a doctorate in mathematics. Universities need to greatly improve the teaching of mathematics. And I don't mean dumbing down the course material; I mean smarten up the teachers. The profs who teach the 100 and 200 level math courses should be hired solely on their teaching ability, and not on their research output (if any). And they had better be able to deliver a lecture in good plain-spoke English, too.

That's another reason the University were I don't work anymore except for beer money has been able to hold the woke back a bit. They have a great Army ROTC program. They discovered that ROTC cadets, particularly the scholarship students, have about a 98% graduation rate. So those students get free room and board and frequently tuition scholarships to cover what the ROCT money doesn't. Essentially a full ride.

I fully agree that the lower-level math courses (Algebra through Differential Equations) should be taught by instructors who are extremely skilled in teaching these subjects, not researchers who are trying to recruit math majors. To be fair, many of them are taught by Teaching Professors, not researchers. But the recitations sections are taught by TAs who have no clue how to teach.

She learned an added wrinkle last night. There's an effort to expand the highway a tenth of a mile from our house, and it's been in development for years. In order to get it done, a lot of eminent domain needs to happen on little houses that black families have owned for a very long time. There's a lot of outside money that's poured into preventing that plan from happening.

If they do certain things on the curve outside our house, it makes justifying the highway expansion harder, for some reason.

Mumblety-mumblety years ago, Midland was a true liberal arts college, except my American History professor who had pronounced leftward leanings. My World History professor was beyond great, but sadly, I was in his last class before retiring. In all honesty, I don't remember a single one of my professors teaching anything except the actual class I signed up for. Midland was just starting to hire professors who obtained their credentials post WW II.

WW II seems to be the dividing line. Grade school teachers, high school teachers, and college professors who trained prior to the war taught. Grade school teachers, high school teachers, and college instructors who obtained their teaching credentials post-war indoctrinated.

We must have some specialized notions of what "classical" means, because many of us are no longer welcome at holiday dinners after dutch-uncling all the nephews into "Trade School."

Back in the day, there was a core of classical material that everyone took, before specializing. Yes, engineers too. That was all streamlined out ("Sputniked," they called it) during the Great Science Scare, and now STEM grads hack and cackle at the memory of their one, made-for-dummies literature or philosophy elective. We have several generations of them toddling about, convinced they know something. Most cannot write or spell.

There is a Classic Doctor Who station on the Roku Channel. It's pretty good. Free with Roku. I do love my Roku stick. Fine time waster.

355 I just want someone there I can trust.

I'm amenable.
Who do you have in mind?

How about that guy from U2 with the glasses?

Friend of Nelson Mandela and all.
He seems trustworthy.

Bono? You want them to get Bono?

My colleague's questioning my choice.

356 Not a snipe. Just addicted to Navy courses. And as a Seabee, I completed all the CB rate courses. The BT and EN, and BM courses were certainly not a requirement for EO, I just did them. Nowlege is gud.

359 WW II seems to be the dividing line. Grade school teachers, high school teachers, and college professors who trained prior to the war taught. Grade school teachers, high school teachers, and college instructors who obtained their teaching credentials post-war indoctrinated.

I got a decent non-indoctrination education and I graduated HS in 1991. That date definitely seems to be close to the last plane out of Saigon though.

No need to apologize to me. It just didn't strike me as something that would pass my employer's sexual harassment training guidelines. And of course, it's not immediately obvious what's missing in the picture, especially compared to what is superfluous. At least AI gets the number of mammaries correct.

368 356 Don't know why I just remembered this, I guess talking Navy Rates. The ex and I lived in Government Leased Quarters, an apartment complex not far from Andrews. One of the Sailors living there was a TD1. Training device tech, like Link trainers and stuff. He had been in the Navy for about 13 years, and DC was the closest he ever got to water. He had spent a lot of time at some obscure depot in Kansas, mostly working on overhead and movie projectors.

369 No shit, mention "classical education" and the grinds spend an hour discussing how early you can start calculus. You boys are not going to enjoy Hillsdale.

370 The Woke curriculum that is pushing out classical education
Oh please, CBD! "Classical education" has been dead for 50 years now! It was killed in the 70s. The simulacrum that replaced it is what's dying now. And it's mostly dead, too. Fundamentalist Progressive education is where we are now in many places.

(But, plenty of places scattered about still holding onto that simulacrum of classical education. And one or two lamps on a hill still holding on to some version of actual classical education, like Hillsdale.)
