The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

Ticket scalping is an artifact of a pre-electronic age. But if you believe the music "artists" and their pet ticket seller (Ticketmaster), the only way to manage the issue is to transfer the outrageous profit of the secondary market to the artists themselves!

Huh?

I can think of several ways to prevent a secondary market, and I am not technically knowledgeable. For instance, tickets can be sold in blocks, and the block is linked to an ID (driver's license, passport, etc). When those tickets are presented the person who purchased must present the ID used for that purchase. No ID that matches the buyer means no admission to the show for any of the tickets. That's after three seconds of thinking about it. Sure, there are issues such as purchases as gifts, but they can be managed.

Obviously this isn't high on the list of America's problems, but it does illustrate the huge gulf between the entertainment industry and the people who consume their products.

This is a wonderful example of exactly how far from their fans the typical arena-filling rocker is!

A magazine and website that has served Bruce Springsteen’s fans for 43 years is shutting down, with its publisher writing that he’s been disillusioned by the debate over ticket prices for their hero’s current tour.

But the complaints about high ticket prices left people there “dispirited, downhearted and yes, disillusioned,” publisher Christopher Phillips wrote late last week in a post announcing the shutdown.

Marvelous! The man who has made a huge fortune pretending that he is just a working class guy tells his loyal working class fans to pound sand. Springsteen was never working class, and he has been a fraud forever.

Ticketmaster has said the vast majority of fans were able to buy tickets at face value, which averaged $202. The tour began Feb. 1 in Tampa, Florida.

Oh...I guess it's okay then! Except that is a lie. I took a look at the Ticketmaster site and saw that there are hundreds of tickets available on their internal secondary market for all of his shows, even for ones at Madison Square Garden in NYC and The Prudential Center In Newark NJ. And I have no idea how many have already been sold during the secondary sale, so it is possible that there were many more available.

This indicates that a significant number of tickets are being purchased with the intent to resell them at a higher price. And that is perfectly okay with me, except that the virtue signalling and hypocrisy from the artists and the ticket sales company is a little hard to stomach.

If they were honest they would simply auction the tickets to maximize their revenue, or maybe start at the expected resale price and then decrease prices until all were sold.

It's their business and they can do whatever they wish, but please, spare us the sanctimony.

Lots of options. Sometimes they get it wrong. Whatever.

Ticketmaster is a boogeyman and has been for some time. Ticketmaster *sucks.* The fees are outrageous and numerous. There are a couple of approaches to this. Back when I was in college, I read about one band that ate Ticketmaster's fees - and reduced their own take pretty dramatically - to make sure their largely working-class fans could afford the show. On the other side, there are bands that do the opposite by buying out blocks of tickets from themselves and scalping them directly.

Ticketmaster is a rent-seeking middleman that engages in tons of bad behavior like front-running fans, engaging in scalping themselves, preventing resale unless you pay more for the ticket upfront, and more. Ticketmaster sucks. Ticketmaster is also a monopoly. So with the government - per Biden's SOTU - going go after "junk fees," why are they targeting the symptom rather than the disease? Where's the FTC, for example?

32 I know. Buy/sell all tickets thru a ticket service... when you want to resell it has to go back through the service and the artist get a "REASONABLE" percent of the mark up. Not the whole amount cause the ticket broker is providing a service and is at risk of loss on unsold tickets. But hey they are all greedy AF and want someone else to take the risk of loss.

Ticketmaster is not opposed to scalping, they are opposed to a secondary market they do not control. This has been Ticketmaster's big movement. They can (because the tickets are digital) prevent them from being transferred outside of their purview. They love the secondary market, so long as *they* control it. And they do so for a ton of shows. If you want to resell tickets, you can - so long as you do so on Ticketmaster's own marketplace so they get a cut of the resale, too.

42 I have another solution. Stop caring about the "outrageous profits." Ticket scalping is pretty much the Platonic ideal of a free market in action. No one is being forced to sell or buy anything. A transaction happens when the $$ involved are worth more than the ticket to the seller and vice versa for the buyer. It's a pure win-win for everybody except those who aren't in on either side of the deal but wish they were.

I did for Redskins games. I lived about 10 blocks from RFK Stadium and would just show up 30 minutes before kickoff and scalpers were desperate to move their inventory. Any Monday Night game was easy to buy discounted tickets cuz ticket owners had to get up and go to work the next day and would sell.

Springsteen was excellent in the 1970s. His first four albums are great, but he became a caricature soon after.

I was a big fan and saw him in concert several times. Great shows, but I haven't paid any attention to him or to any of his music made after 1980.

No one is being forced to sell or buy anything. A transaction happens when the $$ involved are worth more than the ticket to the seller and vice versa for the buyer. It's a pure win-win for everybody except those who aren't in on either side of the deal but wish they were.

Although I did that one time when I went to see Bowie at JFK stadium or the Vet, can't recall which one it was.

I saw Springsteen a few times when in college as he came through Austin a few times.

At that point, his fame was justified. He was cranking out great albums that sounded like nobody else (that stopped with The River). And put on hard-rocking audience involving shows that last 3-4 hours long.

and then I guess he made his bux and issued a general "fuck you" to fans and took up politics to bolster his reputation as his songwriting got weak and his singing worse.

In reality, yes. In terms of the ideal, I have only ever met one actual liberal. He was an early Boomer. Big lib. Bleeding heart. Drove a VW bug around. Long time, aging hippie with long hair. Walking stereotype.

But he was a liberal. A real one. He was actually, factually tolerant. He didn't try to convert anyone. He had his opinions and, when appropriate, he would share them. If you disagreed, then you disagreed. He didn't hurl invective or call you a monster. He just just disagreed. He'd state his case and listen to yours. He had other interests, too, and would happily talk about them.

He was a true, honest-to-G-d liberal, and the only one I've ever met. He was also, perhaps unsurprisingly, a decent guy.

There are essentially no album sales and declining needle-drop fees for radio play now. It is almost impossible to earn a living in the streaming world, and the live shows make up the difference. They're increasingly expensive and increasingly a thing wealthier people do.

The only way to see an act for a small amount of money if it's a small act. Early in the career. Kinda like how I can easily afford to take my brother and his kids and my parents to a minor league ballgame but that's not really reasonable for a major league game and utterly impossible for an NFL game.

Buying and getting a paper ticket (even if you print it yourself) used to be how it worked. The "wallet" thing is what lets them control the secondary market. By having the ticket be a rolling code (which is how it actually works), the only way to resell a ticket is to do so in Ticketmaster's own marketplace, because they control that rolling code. No transfers without their permission, and they'll happily give you that permission but only if you let *them* broker the transaction and take their fee.

I've only paid a lot (at the time) for one of these big mega-concerts that take place in giant sports arena. It's the only time I found it worth it. I did pay a lot for Rush tickets on their 40th anniversary tour, and I probably wouldn't have even then except that I also gave it as a birthday gift.

Heh. I was at a bar trivia thing once and the "quizmaster's" laptop crashed and he lost his questions for a time and had to free-wheel. His question was, "For a time, this kinda lame rock and roller made more money from General Motors than from album and ticket sales."

First live concert I ever attended, Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation, was like this. They were scheduled in Honolulu for July 2/3 and then they woke up on the 4th and decided to play another night. People were still buying tickets when they started playing.

You like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

In Denver I specialized in going to coffee shops with live music. I got to see Cottonwood, a 4-man, 1-woman band who sang folk songs, covers of old ballads and rock songs (they knew "Get Over It" by the Eagles!), and brilliant original tunes like "Neo-Nazi Samba." (No, they were not in favor of neo-Nazis.) I made a point of attending as many of their shows as I could.

Another was Dakota Blonde, who did a wide range of tunes (like the Beatles' "Honey, Don't") and actually had an attractive blonde lady from North Dakota as their lead singer. Fun stuff.

People in my area felt like they knew him. He took a break from the business in the early 70's to finish college (Eastern Michigan, too, I think, not U of M) so he'd have something to fall back on.

Despite feeling "like a number," his songs celebrated working in a factory instead of bitching about it.

285 Scalping is a way to guarantee pricing for the promoters, in that they sell blocks of tickets to a private reseller who then resells the tickets at a premium for last minute purchasers, while bearing the risk of losing money if he either prices it too high, or the show is not popular enough to sell out.
Unlike the venue, a scalper is unable to "paper" the audience - that is give away free tickets to make it seem like a popular show to get over the hump of "no one goes because no one is interested in risking their money and time" to make up sales later

The argument that the scalpers price the tickets out of the range of normies is an odd claim, if the demand is so high then the promoters should up the sale price to match the high demand, or increase the shows to match the demand. On the other hand if the promoters are whining that they are losing revenue, then don't sell tickets remotely and in large blocks and take all the risk of shortfalls on themselves.

I saw her in a werewolf movie last summer, she was one of the main characters.

Advertising is really her sweet spot. She doesn't have he acting chops for movies, so-

her breasts did most of the heavy(!) lifting(!!).

She'd be okay as a quick character like the waitress or something along those lines.

Anyway, she's got to be quite rich already from all those adverts.
