Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

mannixape2.jpg

Another Oopsie

Late last year, many people - including me - reacted, shall we say, negatively to an article in The Atlantic called, "Let's Declare a Pandemic Amnesty." At the time, I said (among many other things) that this was possibly a trial balloon. The Atlantic is often used to launch trial balloon arguments by the Press/Party Complex. They were the first to raise a major "COVID is Over" narrative point that argued for reduced controls, back in August of '21 (here and here).

I suspected that the "Pandemic Amnesty" article was another trial balloon. Commentary - including mine - was on the offensiveness of the position, but the question as to whether it was a first shot in a new battle remained (though my failure to bring that up in my rant at the time was a huge missed opportunity). It is no longer a question. Here we are, a month or so later, and the next article is out - this time in Newsweek.

The new article is an editorial called "It's Time for the Scientific Community to Admit We Were Wrong About COVID and It Cost Lives." It's a firmer version of the earlier article in The Atlantic and is ring-fenced away from the establishment in that it was written by a medical student rather than a public health expert. This is probably another trial balloon. It includes some nuggets of truth followed by a conclusion that exposes the direction this thing is probably going to take as the narrative continues its controlled shift.

What we did not properly appreciate is that preferences determine how scientific expertise is used, and that our preferences might be - indeed, our preferences were - very different from many of the people that we serve. We created policy based on our preferences, then justified it using data. And then we portrayed those opposing our efforts as misguided, ignorant, selfish, and evil.
In other words, the "scientific community" was ideological and unscientific. He doesn't say this, of course, but it's what those words mean. The scientific method doesn't mean "select and adjust data to fit your predetermined conclusion." Unless we're talking about Official Science - like climate change, public health, criminal justice, etc. - in which case that's it precisely what it means.

They were wrong, but it was only sort of their fault. Our damnable, supremacist society shares some of the blame. It always does:

In so doing, we violated the autonomy of those who would be most negatively impacted by our policies: the poor, the working class, small business owners, Blacks and Latinos, and children. These populations were overlooked because they were made invisible to us by their systematic exclusion from the dominant, corporatized media machine that presumed omniscience.
Those mistakes were much worse because of our oppressive society. Of course. No modern mea culpa is complete without the "systemic oppression" dodge.

He also goes on to blame the scientific, media and public health establishments for the rise of conspiracy theories (an ever-green boogeyman), loss of trust, contempt for expert class elites, the widening gap between rich and poor and so on.

But he also has the solution, and this little statement is, I think, the purpose of the entire article:

Solving these problems in the long term requires a greater commitment to pluralism and tolerance in our institutions, including the inclusion of critical if unpopular voices.
Intellectual elitism, credentialism, and classism must end. Restoring trust in public health - and our democracy - depends on it.
What does this conclusion - that they should be less contemptuous and hateful of the proles next time - not call for?

It does not call for punishment. It does not call for formal, meaningful reform or replacement of the institutions the author rightly blames. It does not call for the ouster of leadership of these institutions. It doesn't call for new standards. It doesn't even call for a postmortem. It just calls for inclusion of deplorables next time 'round. In other words, it calls for these institutions and their leaders to remain in place and in control.

We are now on our second major "Pandemic Amnesty" article. There will be more to come. Unless the conclusion begins with demands for major reform and specific punishment for the worst of the COVID malefactors, however, what this is will not change. It will remain merely a narrative push to leave them unscathed and in charge, with objections ignored.

No sale.

These two articles don't consider that point. They're about "moving on" and "being inclusive" in the future. This is my main problem. You can articulate the problems as much as you want - and the guy who wrote this article did some of that - but without "and we need to sweep the agencies clean or shut them down entirely, try again, and throw the worst offenders in prison," there's no just path forward.

I played the first game. Contrary to nigh universal opinion- I did not like the original game near as much as others.

-The pervading feeling of hopelessness and despair, some of that is apt given the setting and story, but it seemed to stray into nihilism- which I am pretty sensitive to.
-the pedo overtones with Nolan North's Cannibal faction that captures ellie seemed gratuitous to me.
-I really did not like the death animations for Ellie. I get that it is 'realistic', but given the difficulty of the boss fight with the above mentioned North character, it REALLY turned me off the game to watch a 14 year old girl getting butchered.
-I have no problem with Joel making the call he does at the end. The Fireflies are assholes. My problem is that he lies to Ellie. She was kept in the dark by the Fireflies about the implication as well, so him lying to her... it just taints what was otherwise a beautiful development of the relationship.

I live in a place with above-ground infrastructure. High winds and tree branches come down. Sometimes, that means a power failure. Thankfully, the local utility is *very* good at dispatching and repairing quickly. It's rare for a power outage to exceed 20 minutes.

Of course, large numbers of lines down due to ice buildup that also makes the roads very hard to navigate is a different scale of the problem...

147 Excellent rant, Joe. Saw this article last night in Mis Hum's ONT. I have actually printed the "amnesty" article from The Atlantic and also this new one from Newsweek and the associated commentary from Zerohedge. Ya never know when these things might disappear.

The thing I'm not seeing anywhere is admission of WHY these people were wrong. WHY they blindly followed the CDC, WHO, etc. And without the WHY, there can never be a correction to that behavior.

My reason for printing these things out also is strategic for combating people who buy into the Chicken Little frady cats from the Church of the Climate Apocalypse. My first question to those folks is "why do you believe the people who say there is a climate crisis?" Why should we trust them? People here think electricity lines should all be below ground (hurricanes) because they fundamentally don't understand electricity.

Electrical lines can be below ground if required, but it is generally avoided for transmission lines because of the high losses inherent to being underground.

The power in electricity does not flow in the wires. It flows in the magnetic and electrostatic fields surrounding the wires.

181 This is what I wrote about this in the ONT last night:

380 "Trump was not remotely perfect, nor were the academic critics of consensus policy."

This is part what Mr. Bass wrote of those "critics". Most of the rest of what he writes talks about the consequences of the establishment's lockdown and censorship actions, without saying once the words 'they were right.'

For me, this pretty much invalidates what this guy wrote. Yes, mistakes were made. Yes, there were catastrophic consequences. However, I don't read any sign (yet) of this guy getting any sort of humility about how we were RIGHT and they were WRONG.

His call for including the dissenting voices, for now, reads to me like a call to let us say our peace, and then ignore us anyway the next time. We had underground utilities when we lived in Kentucky. Had a tornado come within a quarter mile of our house and we never lost power. I know that's anecdotal, but the only time we lost power there in 5 years was when some idiot contractor was digging where they were not supposed to be digging.

216 This was one of the things that Trump failed at. Oh, the Trump Haters crying that he said to inject bleach are disgusting liars, that's not it. Trump was pretty much all-in on whatever Fauci and Brix told him needed to happen because of his own medical, germophobe and health blind spot. His JOB wasn't to rubber stamp them, it was to take their information and apply it to the larger context of LIFE and all the people that would be hurt by potential policies. That he *at least* refused to take ultimate power at the Federal level is something he did very right. I'd even say that Warp Speed was the right thing to do...it only became wrong when combined with vaccine mandates and "misinformation" instead of allowing people to assess their own competing risks and make their own decisions.

In the game, it is hinted at that the guy they meet in the deserted town is gay, but very obliquely. Ellie steals some magazines the guy had when they leave and they are Playgirl type. His partner is referenced, iirc, but never seen.

The gay romance to come is Ellie, which was added after the game in the dlc. I am okish with that as it is not really 'altering' the story (her sexuality is never really discussed in the original game- she is a kid), it is just a crap story that is painfully tacked on.

*******

This is the crux of the matter, and the next great hurdle. The apparatchiks do not see the pandemic response as a good faith effort in which mistakes were made. They see the pandemic response as a "Proof of Concept", the concept being rule by executive fiat under the all-protective umbrella of "Emergency Declaration". Legislatures were co-opted or sidelined and the judiciary was brushed aside, leaving a monolithic executive branch unfettered by checks and balances. That form of governance will continue, just name your emergency du jour.

The doomed gesture of the House to declare the COVID emergency over will have no relevance for the next public health emergency, or climate emergency or domestic terrorism emergency. They don't want to include unpopular voices, but worse, they don't NEED to include unpopular voices.

True, but the delta isn't as bad during new construction. Converting an above-round infrastructure to a buried infrastructure is often catastrophically expensive. Where I live, they looked into it. The cost to do it came to something like $30k per resident (it's a city, but it is geographically very large area with a modest population due to some historical stuff). Not a chance. The newer parts of town under construction have buried power, but the older parts will be above-ground forever. The city is very good at getting the power back on when a tree limb takes out a line, though, and they do a lot of right-of-way management (tree removal, etc.).

Nothing has anything to do with "unpopular voices", obviously. Again, more illogical unscientific garbage from an ignorant and incapable mind. Science is a process using data, empirical observation, and logic. Period. End of story.

Incompetence is the core issue. Malevolence, greed, bigotry, and totalitarian impulses are seasonings added on top.

The former means that society is on its own - its institutions are, generally, garbage (meaning the people in them, collectively, and the failure to serve their purpose).

The latter mean that any sensible person now realizes they're surrounded by pernicious idiots, or useless drones who obey these idiots, mindlessly.

Makes sense. Add a pole if necessary and string a line using a bucket truck versus dig/trench/connect/bury (suitable underground cabling).

We did our underground service, so that all the utility guy had to do was pop the cable through the enclosure and make the connection and power it up. But that's money if you are paying someone else to do all that digging.

DeSantis and Abbot. I think Noem was the only governor who said from Day One that everyone should decide how to handle it at their business and in their own lives and she wasn't going to tell anyone that their jobs weren't essential.

Thing is, DeSantis (and I think Abbot) changed course early on. DeSantis moved to focusing on protecting the elderly and keeping the state running.

New Mexico meanwhile screwed the pooch in a big way and as a reward re-elected our Democrat governor.
