Saturday Overnight Open Thread (2/4/23)
A politician dies So a politician dies and ends up standing in front of the pearly gates. Saint Peter looks at him for a second, flicks through his book, and finds his name. "So, you're a politician..." "Well, yes, is that a problem?" "Oh no, no problem. But we've recently adopted a new system for people in your line of work, and unfortunately you will have to spend a day in Hell. After that however, you're free to choose where you want to spend eternity!"
"Wait, I have to spend a day in Hell??" says the politician. "Them's the rules" Says St Peter, clicks his fingers, and WOOMPH, the guy dissapears...
And awakes, curled up with his hands over his eyes, knowing he's in Hell. Cautiously, he listens for the screams, sniffs the air for brimstone, and finds... Nothing. Just the smell of, is that fabric softener? And cut grass, this can't be right?
"Open your eyes!" says a voice. "C'mon, wakey wakey, we've only got 24 hours!". Nervously, he uncovers his eyes, looks around, and sees he's in a hotel room. A nice one too. Wait, this is a penthouse suite... And there's a smiling man in a suit, holding a martini. "Who are you??" The politician asks. "Well, I'm Satan!" says the man, handing him the drink and helping him to his feet. "Welcome to Hell!" "Wait, this is Hell? But... Where's all the pain and suffering?" he asks. Satan throws him a wink. "Oh, we've been a bit mis-represented over the years, it's a long story. Anyway, this is your room! The minibar is of course free, as is the room service, there's extra towels next to the hot-tub, and if you need anything, just call reception. But enough of this! It's a beautiful day, and if you'd care to look outside..." Slightly stunned by the opulent surroundings, the man wanders over to the floor-to-ceiling windows through which the sun is glowing, looks far down, and sees a group of people cheering and waving at him from a golf course. "It's one of 5 pro-level courses on site, and there's another 6 just a few minutes drive out past the beach and harbour!" says Satan, answering his unasked question. So they head down in the lift, walk out through the glittering lobby where everyone waves and welcomes the man, as Satan signs autographs and cherrily talks shop with the laughing staff. And as he walks out, he sees the group on the golf course are made up of every one of his old friends, people he's admired for years but never met or worked with, and people whose work he's admired but died long before his career started. And out of the middle of this group walks his wife, with a massive smile and the body she had when she was 20, who throws her arms around him and plants a delicate kiss on his cheek. Everyone cheers and applauds, and as they slap him on the back and trade jokes, his worst enemy arrives, as a 2 foot tall goblin-esque caddy. He spends the day in the bright sunshine on the course, having the time of his life laughing at jokes and carrying important discussions, putting the world to rights with his friends while holding his delighted wife next to him as she gazes lovingly at him. Later, they return to the hotel for dinner and have an enormous meal, perfectly cooked, which descends into a food-fight when someone accidentally throws a bread roll at the next table (where Ghandi is having a game of truth-or-dare with Marylin Monroe). As everyone is falling about laughing and flinging breadsticks at each other, his wife whispers in his ear... And they return to their penthouse suite, and spend the rest of the night making love like they did on their honeymoon. After 6 hours of intense passion, the man falls deep into the 100% Egyptian cotton pillows, and falls into a deep and happy sleep...
And is woken up by St Peter. "So, that was Hell. Wasn't what you were expecting, I bet?" "No sir!" says the man. "So then" says St Peter "you can make your choice. It's Hell, which you saw, or Heaven, which has choral singing, talking to God, white robes, and so on". "Well... I know this sounds strange, but on balance, I think I'd prefer Hell" says the politician. "Not a problem, we totally understand! Enjoy!" Says St Peter, and clicks his fingers again.
The man wakes up in total darkness, the stench of ammonia filling the air and distant screams the only noise. As he adjusts, he can see the only light is from belches of flame far away, illuminating the ragged remains of people being tortured or burning in a sulphurous ocean. A sudden bolt of lightning reveals Satan next to him, wearing the same suit as before and grinning, holding a soldering iron in one hand and a coil of razor-wire in the other. "What's this??" He cries. "Where's the hotel?? Where's my wife??? Where's the minibar, the golf-courses, the pool, the restaurant, the free drinks and the sunshine???"
"Ah", says Satan. "You see, yesterday, we were campaigning. But today, you voted..."

I was reading some speculation on what it could be. LIDAR is one. There are things that are easier and cheaper to do with a balloon. DARPA has used or played around with spy balloons themselves.
A balloon can loiter over an area longer, and that gets more resolution for lidar and other purposes.

In trying to remember back to the start of the panic a few things stood out to me at the time
1) No one I knew was dying. And the people getting sick were old and had serious health issues already - and yet the media keeps telling me this is one of the most deadly diseases of all time
2) When it started to leak out that COVID came from the Wuhan lab the powers that be shut down all investigation of the topic and pretended how the disease started was of literally no importance.
And with these two data points I decided to wait and see on how "safe and effective" the clot shot actually was.

That would be the retired French one from 1960 or so Brazil bought. I don't think Brazil ever got it running for more than a couple months at a time and decided to scrap it because it would be cheaper to build a new one and they don't have the money for that either. Probably sinking it in the ocean because with the new environmental laws its crazy expensive to scrap older military ships as they contain "hazardous substances" that must be disposed of at great cost far exceeding the scrap value.

Good points. I think I was skeptical a bit earlier. When we couldn't call it the Wuhan Flu was the beginning for me. Racism? Oh ferfucksake.
The second was those short tik-tok/twitter videos from China (starting late 2019) of people passing out in the street, being taken away for not wearing a mask, etc. I started to smell a psy-op rat at that point.
Then the politics of medications took over ('horse dewormer') and I knew it was a set-up. To what end, exactly, I still don't know.
The O'Keefe PV story is HUGE, even if unreported by his media 'betters'. (We all know how the Corp. Media laugh and sneer at O'Keefe.) The doc drama queen's reaction on the second video is just too panic-stricken perfect once he realizes what is on the 'trying to impress a date' video. Then trying to stop a random SUV in the street. Pure 'I fucked up big-time' panic. The immediate wiping of him from the 'net was something to behold.
Psy-op big time. Just to see how compliant we now are. And, boy howdy, are we compliant -- to a fault.

In trying to remember back to the start of the panic a few things stood out to me at the time
1) No one I knew was dying. And the people getting sick were old and had serious health issues already - and yet the media keeps telling me this is one of the most deadly diseases of all time
2) When it started to leak out that COVID came from the Wuhan lab the powers that be shut down all investigation of the topic and pretended how the disease started was of literally no importance.
And with these two data points I decided to wait and see on how "safe and effective" the clot shot actually was.

Weird, one doesn't think of NV as a grain-based spirit state, but a few years back I had a great corn liquor made by The Depot brewery/distillery in Reno ("made with 100% Nevada corn", which I found funny). But then there was that time we returned from Reno via state highways in the western part of the state (crossed back into CA at Bishop). Beautiful farmland under cultivation. PRC launched a spiffy new military comms satellite this past Sep. Geosynchronous orbit covering central Asia.
They have a satellite, TJS 7 (Communication Technology Test Satellite 7), geosynchronous orbit at 99.5 deg W long. The 99W meridian runs from central ND to central TX. East to West coverage is a band from eastern Greenland to Hawaii. So, there was a PRC comsat overhead the whole time.
TJS 6 in a geosynchronous orbit just west of the International Dateline. PRC has 60 some sats in orbit.

Still reading up in this. So, most sats have C Band comms for ground control links. That's 5G data rates. Still photos would work fine for that kind of recon mission, I am betting. Dunno about the volume of other kinds of data, like ELINT, etc.
Another point is continuous coms does enable ground control to porpoise the balloon. Comsat coverage for the entire flight. So, depending on what is recovered, someone might be able to call BS on "blew off-course" or at least they knew where it was and if innocent, then why not notify before crossing the ADIZ?

NASA's TDRSS system uses S-band for ground control and some low Earth orbiting satellite data, and K-band for the larger data streams like the pics Landsat would send. That was 1980's tech. I'm sure we could put eyes on just about any point on the globe with streaming video if we wanted to. The Chinese can't be that far behind. I'd bet they have full video of the entire trip, right up until the seawater shorted it's systems out.

Wasn't it Friedman who'd said that if you put the Govt. in charge of sand, that within 2 years, the Saudi Desert would experience a critical shortage of sand?
With that in mind. Establish the U.S. Department of Stupidity. A cabinet level position. Just as the Department of Energy has not created so much as one watt of power since it's inception, the Dept. of Stupidity might just accomplish a similar feat?
If not Cabinet Level, then the Stupidity Agency could report to the Department of Redundancy Department. Either way, Ready, Fire, Aim !!!

In trying to remember back to the start of the panic a few things stood out to me at the time
1) No one I knew was dying. And the people getting sick were old and had serious health issues already - and yet the media keeps telling me this is one of the most deadly diseases of all time
2) When it started to leak out that COVID came from the Wuhan lab the powers that be shut down all investigation of the topic and pretended how the disease started was of literally no importance.
And with these two data points I decided to wait and see on how "safe and effective" the clot shot actually was.

And then, for me, the videos being smuggled out of China reporting a bazillion deaths and burials there gave me pause for ... a couple of days until sensible people responded that these sources were, um, dubious.

I saw those, and then I saw the powers that be suppressing any treatment methods even when shown to work, and their unconcern at their own personal safety if the disease was so deadly. These aren't brave or selfless people -- if they were afraid they'd hide out in a disease free fort on day 1.
