Some folks just shouldn't be parents.

TEL AVIV -- A couple abandoned their baby at an airport check-in desk in Tel Aviv, Israel after arriving without a ticket for the child.

The pair, who have not been identified, were checking in for a Ryanair flight from Ben Gurion International Airport to Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday with the infant.

It emerged that the baby did not have a ticket, and the couple headed off to board the flight -- leaving their child behind on the airline check-in counter.

The matter was referred to police, a spokeswoman for Ryanair told CNN in an email.

She said: "These passengers traveling from Tel Aviv to Brussels (31 Jan) presented at check-in without a booking for their infant. They then proceeded to security leaving the infant behind at check-in.

No panic, no worry, no trouble. Cops aren't fazed.

Petrol station staff were given the shock of their lives when they discovered a human penis on site.

The bizarre discovery was made at a petrol station in Alabama, US, yesterday (January 30) a little after 6am, local time.

After the discovery, police officers showed up and collected the severed appendage as evidence.

According to initial reports, police do not believe the finding is proof of any foul play, but it is not clear whose member was found.

One employee simply told local reporters: “It was a whole d*ck.”

I don't have the victory plan for the war on drugs. It's one thing to allow drug use to take place. It's another thing to completely enabled the addict. Canadian Province British Columbia decriminalizes narcotics.

VANCOUVER—On Tuesday, British Columbia will begin a three-year decriminalization experiment, allowing drug users 18 and over to carry a up to 2.5 grams of opioids, such as heroin and fentanyl, as well as cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA.

It’s an experiment that’s likely to influence drug policy across Canada.

The approach is a “monumental shift” in drug policy, says Carolyn Bennett, the federal minister of mental health and addictions, adding that it’s meant to foster “trusting and supportive relationships” rather than criminalization.

“Through this exemption we will be able to reduce the stigma, the fear and shame that keep people who use drugs silent about their use,” she told a Vancouver news conference Monday.

“And help more people access life-saving supports and treatment.”

I love food and enjoy eating. However eating dinner by myself is not a pleasure. But this author relishes the opportunity to dine alone.

Yet the joys of eating alone have been documented since ancient times, and I’m happy that it’s never occurred to me to think of solo dining as anything other than an ordinary act. The history of solo dining, particularly for women, hasn’t always been welcoming, and even now there are some best practices I’ve developed to help me do it well. But for me, eating alone in a restaurant is almost meditative, even if I’m just wolfing down a plate of pasta between meetings.

Dining out by myself is a form of self-care, a way to derive immense satisfaction from the experience — the ambience, the flavors and textures, the chatter around me. Without a dining companion to entertain, I can sit with my thoughts, watch the world around me, eavesdrop on fellow diners, maybe have a conversation with the bartender if I’m seated at the bar. I start to remember that I’m not alone at all; I’m part of a community of people, and most people, believe it or not, are friendly and interesting. Eating alone, in a paradoxical way, can get me out of my own head.

The latest news on the Netflix password sharing rules.

We knew this day was coming: Netflix wants you to stop sharing your account with friends and family, and would prefer that those users pay for their own account or not stream at all. You’ve probably heard about the company’s plans to crack down on this sharing, and even talk that it’ll charge per extra user. We now know how the company plans to roll out these changes in the US, and it’s a little different than expected.

It doesn’t look like we have an exact timeline yet for when these policies will officially roll out, but Netflix has updated its “Sharing your Netflix account” Help Center page to detail how the policy will work.

All dressed up and no place to go.

Bell’s 360 Invictus prototype has been disassembled, trucked from Amarillo to Fort Worth, Texas, and is being put back together in preparation for ground runs and a first flight this year, if all goes to plan.

The company’s pitch for the U.S. Army’s Future Attack Recon Aircraft, or FARA, is 95 percent complete and awaiting the GE T901 Improved Turbine Engine so it can begin ground runs ahead of a planned takeoff sometime in 2023. The engine is being developed by another Army office within the Future Vertical Lift effort.

For the outdoors people among us, perhaps a better mosquito repellent.

One of the most studied insect repellents in history, DEET has long been the first line of defense against mosquitoes for campers and field scientists alike.

Now however, a combination of plant compounds has proved more effective for longer, and less irritative than commerical alternatives like DEET or picaridan.

On its own, neither DEET, nor the second-most used mosquito repellent picaridan, provides all the desired effects: namely a high degree of protection at a low dose, a negligable degree of toxicity or immuno-sensitivity, a negligable or faint odor, and the ability to provide continous protection even when wet.

The government giveth and the government taketh away. Blessed be the name of government.

Chick-fil-A's snaking drive-thru lines, which frequently spill into city streets, are notorious throughout the US.

In one North Carolina city, the problem is so vexing – and potentially dangerous to pedestrians – local officials ordered the chain to demo the restaurant and start over.

The city's solution to the restaurant's traffic-clogging line was to add more drive-thru lanes and eliminate the dining room.

Yes! Thank you for asking. The key was bent and I think my employee may have made it worse trying to force it. I had to usher 15 people through the back at 545am, they probably thought I was going to murderize them. But a locksmith came, cleaned it out, made a new key and all was well before the 815a class.

Yeah. I had no idea what those noises were this morning, until I looked out the window at all the broken branches in my and my neighbors’ yards.

Going to be some serious work clearing that when it warms up.

I’m really hoping I don’t lose power. Called in a “there’s a heavy branch broken and laying across the power line” this afternoon. I expect they’re prioritizing actual outages, however.

185 Oregon's drug decriminalization program is going great! People are lined up around the block at treatment centers to finally get the help they need without the stigma of a conviction or the threat of incarceration.

The assumption behind decriminalizing hard drugs is that junkies are just waiting for a chance to quit, and all they need is more rehab treatment spaces.

A doctor noted in the Oregon voters pamphlet before the election that this was garbage - that unless a junkie faces Consequences for their continued use, they are perfectly happy with their drug habit.

This has proven to be the case.

225 Amusement in Portland!

The hot new political trend in Portland is local income taxes that only "the rich" pay income over $150,000 or $250,000 jointly are subject to the taxes).

If you live in the Oregon portion of the metro, you are on the hook for two separate 1% income taxes, plus another 1.5% income tax if you live in Portland's county (rising to 3% on income over $300,000). This is on top of a 9.9% state marginal income tax rate, of course.

Well, the city of Portland was put in charge of collecting all these taxes, and failed to publicize that you needed to file an income tax return with Portland if you were subject to the tax (even if you don't live in Portland).

Well, a quarter of the people subject to the taxes didn't file, and the first indication that they got that they needed to file a income tax return with Portland was a letter from Portland announcing that they already owed hundreds to thousands in penalties for not filing on time.

Can't imagine why Oregon is losing population...

I used to occasionally get Taco Bell on the way home from work, but the semi regular 3-4 car line quickly disabused me of such a notion. Not to mention that Taco Bell is notorious for at least one of those cars being some fool buying for 60 of their closest friends.

Zappa was a really strange guy, that's about the best that can be observed.

He was definitely right in the thick of some really strange shit. He lived in the "Log Cabin", a huge mansion once owned by Tom Mix, at the foot of Laurel Canyon, where all the hippies and musicians and famous producers from LA lived.

The Log Cabin (burned down in 1980) wasn't really capable of being locked up, so it was a revolving door of questionable characters and crash pad living arrangements. Frank was said not to allow drug use or anything of the sort at the Log Cabin (unlike everywhere else in Laurel Canyon) so visitors had to get their high on before entering.

There is some sort of nexus between Vito Paulekas and the GTOs, the hippie chick dancers that were seen at the clubs and parties, Whisky a Go-Go, Carl Franzoni, and the "Freaks".

Was Frank on the payroll? Could be. Nothing would surprise me any longer. Tim Leary was a CIA asset. The "Unabomber" was one of the LSD subjects at Harvard, along with Ken Kesey, Robert Hunter, and about 5 or 10 million other Californians in the 1960s

Just reading some stuff in the world of exotic theoretical physics. Some guys think they've made a breakthrough in the notion of a "warp drive". There've been several such concepts, but they all involved exotic matter, matter with such exotic properties as negative mass, and other crazy properties.

The breakthrough is some theorists think they've come up with a solution for a "warp bubble" that involves only normal matter.

One of them is about to so some elementary experiments to see if his theory seems to work on a small, lab scale. He needs big time money to do. Space Daddy and SpaceX are giving him some.

He's not going to try to create such a warp bubble, just play around and see if his idea does do to space-time what he thinks it will do, or something like that. If it works, it would still be a very long way to go to actually create the warp bubble.

He needs a "small" LIGO like gravitational wave detector apparatus to see if that idea produces distortions in space-time like he thinks. They would very tiny.

He was the first to come up with the concept. Since they've they modified and played around with the idea, and this is the latest idea.

Originally the energy requirements were such that'd you need a few Jupiter masses worth of energy, and some of it negative. Imagine playing around with the energy of Jupiter, I mean all of its mass as energy and not, you know, blowing yourself up.

Another problem with these warp bubble metrics (a "metric" is a solution to the Einstein Field Equations of General Relativity -- these all come up with such solutions that do crazy shit) is time-travel.

IIRC, someone showed that they all would allow closed time-like curves to develop. They might no create them, but the concept would allow the creation.

And that means time-travel, which is one hell of a problem .

512 Re: Myocarditis

There is much confusion over this right now, and it seems like everyone is focusing on the increases in myocarditis, without recognizing that, yeah. We were fully expecting to see an increase in myocarditis.

Israel saw an increase around the time of the vax rollout, you say? You know what else happened right then? A huge spike in COVID.

You know what causes myocarditis at a higher rate than the vax? COVID.

Everyone is pointing at these increases in myocarditis like it's some mystery, but it was totally expected.

The vax does carry an increased risk of myocarditis. However, it has a much smaller risk of myocarditis than COVID, itself. So you have a global pandemic of myocarditis causing virus, and you see an increase in myocarditis during and after the pandemic, and we're all supposed to be shocked by that?

As if it's obviously the vaccines' fault?

You're going to have to do better than that. How about this... what's the rate of myocarditis in people who got vaxxed but never had COVID?

Essentially The same as gen pop pre-COVID.

Holy shit. Maybe it's not the vax? Just maybe?

513 Re: decriminalizing drugs

Decriminalization isn't the same as making them legal. There are still "penalties" for using them, just not penal system related. Getting caught with them can and will result in unplanned rehab stays, etc.

It's working well in Portugal and other places it's been tried. Saves lots of money, reduces the need to jail people for usingdrugs, and focuses on fixing the issue rather than punishing it, which is far more productive.

This is a good thing, even though on the surface it might appear to be "coddling criminals" it's actually a better solution for fixing long term drug issues and making these folks productive members of society faster.
