Daily Tech News 27 January 2023

Intel posted one of its worst quarters on record, losing $661 million or 1/16th of a single blockchain scam. (Tom's Hardware)

Desktop, mobile, and server CPUs were all profitable, though all were sharply down from last year. Most of the loss came from Intel's ongoing push into the GPU market, which the company fully expected to bleed cash for the first few years.

The company has shut down its network switch unit. Intel will still produce a range of networking chips, just not the switches themselves. In recent years the company has also cancelled its Optane storage project and sold off its SSD division as it focuses engineering on improving its CPUs.

Tech News

AMD meanwhile has told customers not to buy its Radeon 7000 graphics cards. (Tom's Hardware)

Recent advertising material showed the performance per dollar of all currently available Radeon cards - and highlighted the fact that all Radeon 7000 cards deliver worse value than all Radeon 6000 cards.

They're faster, yes, but worse value.

Nvidia has the same problem. Intel doesn't, but that's only because they don't really have any previous graphics cards to compare against.

Just watched Kung Fu Panda 1 2 and 3. Despite being voiced by the loathsome Jack Black, very entertaining and beautifully animated. I really enjoy the animated stuff from that era of DreamWorks etc.

The free music with Amazon Prime has gone full Nazi. When you choose "Your Favorites" it plays a song or two, then injects something new. You don't like it so you skip that tune and it then injects another song which is not a favorite either. So you skip that tune also. At a certain point it will announce 'Maximum number of skips" and it will no longer allow you to skip songs you don't want to listen to.

I'm sure it's part of some woke bullshit. DEI can DIAF.

I have been using Spotify since it first hit the USA and have been a paid subscriber now for years. Recently I've been experimenting with Amazon music free and paid because they have high definition audio. I'm dumping Amazon and going back full on to Spotify because Amazon's user software sucks balls.

It is intentionally inserting music from African-American artists into playlists. But not the ones I want to listen to. I like a lot of jazz, and AA artists are well represented in that category of music. But a lot of them suck and I don't want to hear them. They have taken away freedom of choice in the matter.

It's this constant drip, drip, drip of loss of freedom in search of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that pisses me off. I still have the choice to 'vote with my feet' which I intend to do.

I can say from experience that Spotify makes recommendations on your musical taste and doesn't go down the Woke rabbit hole. This applies to their radio playlists too whether it's free or paid. Plus there's Spotify connect functionality is built into something like every AV receiver on the planet. If you're not familiar with Spotify connect, it allows you to cast music right to your amplifier and run it through your home stereo. It is pretty fantastic.

Spotify Earnings Stats:

The $100k-plus-per-year club counted 7,800 members in 2020. The $500k-plus-per-year club counted 1,820 artists in 2020. And the $1 million-plus-per-year club counted 870 artists in 2020.

So, in Amazons case, someone has to manually tag a database with a logical (Y/N) as far as diversity for 10's of thousands of musical artists. Then get laid off when finished.

I have a digital music library on a network drive. I use a streaming device called WiiM Mini that is connected to my home stereo. It works perfectly. Spotify can access the same set of music but it it sort of gets lost in the other parts of Spotify's music. I find it more convenient to keep my personal library and the streamers libraries separate.

I recently dusted off a record player I bought for my wife's classroom years ago, hooked it up to a soundbar and we listen to that. It's funny how CD's are a continuous about 45 minutes long, but you have to flip a record over after about 20 minutes. First world problem, I know.

But, no commercials, no insertion of little-known 'diverse' artists, just good music with the occasional pop, hiss, or scratch.

Sorry Amazon, when you notice payments to popular artists are less, and they notice and say, "What the hell is going on?" I hope you have a good excuse. You killed the Golden Goose.

When my wife taught in early ed she made sure the children got a dose of the classics. Early in the school year 'The Ant and the Grasshopper' was introduced. This was a private school very conservative until a leftist took over the eighth grade and the parents pulled their kids instead of subjecting them to her. So the school lost two years of tuition. It ended up killing it. I warned them and my warning was not well received.
