New Documentary "Walt's Disinchanted Kingdom" Shows How Disney Stopped Being a Family Brand to Let Its Freak Flags Fly

This comes out today. Where, I don't know.

Turning this into an "Is This Something?" thread: Some good news, apparently this movie I never heard of until yesterday, Plane, is something.

Film Threat and JoBlo both say it's really good, and a throwback to 90s action movies when stories were simple, stunts were practical, and identity politics were absent, apart from the usual action-movie set-up showing people of different races cooperating to kill people of varied races.

They do say the blood splatters are CGI, which I don't like. They do that because it's cheap, and because you can decide in post-production whether to turn those blood splatters down to get a PG-13 or turn them up to get an R. But other than that and the plane crashing, they say it's all practical stuff.

And also, non-superheroic. Semi-plausible action with good amount of brutality.

I got excited when I saw there was a new Liam Neeson Philip Marlowe movie, but got less excited when I heard him talking:

Marlowe doesn't make blunt threats or tell you how tough he is. That's a Mike Hammer thing. Marlowe says he isn't tough, but in a way that you get the sense that he's so tough he can afford to be modest about it. A lot of people say things like, "You think you're pretty tough, don't you?" and he says "Nah, I'm just a pushover" or "I'm as harmless as a kitten in a teacup" with a baiting smile.

Also, he never says things directly and obviously like "Los Angeles, City of Angels. More like 'city of dirty little secrets.'" That's stupid. Marlowe speaks in, let's call it hypobole. Not hyperbole, but the opposite, hypobole. Saying things with extreme understatement so that it takes you a second to figure out what he's saying. He often puts things in the negative to make them even more elusive.

He described "Moose" Malloy, an enormous man, as "no larger than a beer truck." He described someone as "less conspicuous than a tarantula on an angel food cake."

And I can see that Marlowe's a two fisted action hero here. I'll excuse that, because I know every movie has to be at least half an action movie to get made, but Marlowe's big strength wasn't beating people up. It was getting beaten up. Once he decided that a case needed to be solved or that he was on your side, he was willing to get beaten up or even murdered to finish things. It's not that he was a physically unstoppable hero, but a morally unstoppable one: Yes, you could stop him by killing him, but it would take that and only that to stop him.

But like I said, I'll excuse that because I understand that change and frankly I'd like to see him win more fights.

The talking, though. That's non-negotiable.

Ah well, there is a seriously annoying phenomenon of writing crap dialogue just for use in the trailer and I guess I can hold out hope that they wrote some of that blunt stereotypical tough guy talk because how can you tell he's a tough guy unless he straight-up tells you he's one?

Still doesn't sound like Marlowe, though.

I know people like the Powers Booth series that was on HBO 30 years ago but if I remember right, he tended to sound like Mike Hammer there, too.

There's a tradition that heroes are straightforward and direct while villains are flowerly and elusive in their speech, but Marlowe was not that kind of direct, to-the-point hero. Maybe that's why they think that Marlowe has to sound like... Mike Hammer.

I'm not knocking Mike Hammer. I'm just saying, if you call a movie "Poirot," make him Poirot, don't make him Adrian Monk like Kenneth Brannagh did.

The closest I've seen to Marlowe on screen is probably Tom from Miller's Crossing. Like Tom, Marlowe isn't a straight-line kind of guy, he's all bent, a dame would say, nothing but angles and curves.

34 Liam Neeson is a bit old to play Marlowe, but maybe this is late in his career or something. And yeah Marlowe was street literary, he was a good guy who dealt with terrible things without them rubbing off on him. he kept his integrity and did what was right (aside from loveless boning of some girl every book) no matter what it cost him.

He had a lip, he was sarcastic and no respecter of title or persons; he'd treat everyone the same, even the bad guys. He had respect, but it only went so far. Marlowe was incredibly brilliant but he never showed off, he just used it in the job.

It's a perfect matinee or cheap Tuesday movie. It's a soft R, so it's not that gory and there aren't more than a few F bombs...and it's thrilling, both in the plane and island scenes (and yes, some fight scenes are brutal, as is some of the "no, you idiot, don't do that" on the plane)...

Yes, it drags a little a few times...but some of it is awesome to see on screen...

53 Also, has anyone else noticed that Phase IV of the MCU is done? The new Ant-Man is the start of Phase V.

Phase 4 was a huge dud. Not just because the movies were generally terrible but because they didn't go anywhere or do anything. They had no central concept or plot, they didn't take the story anywhere, and almost all the characters they introduced were duds.

The best description I heard of it was that it was like someone doing all the side quests in an adventure game, after doing the main quest. Sure, they don't have much treasure or storyline but they get you xps.

I see this assertion a lot, but I rarely actually see leftists claim AR-15 stands for "assault rifle."

Usually they just assert that it was designed as a weapon of war, that it's the weapon of choice for school shooters, that it's "high powered" etc.

Something they do claim that is absolutely hilarious is that the AR-15 is useless for hunting because it blows apart the meat and the little that's left is inedible. Oh, they also love to claim they kick like mules.

Maybe I don't understand enough from the trailer, but this one seems awfully obvious. If someone has to die to save the earth, the dad is going to volunteer. This doesn't seem very suspenseful, once you get past the obvious "Why our family?" and "Are you sure this will stop things?"

100 >>>57 Adrian Monk

Such a great show. Cheesy at times, but family-friendly and solid detective work. "It's a gift... and a curse" is still one of my favorite lines.

i signed up for BritBox just to watch Jonathan Creek. He's a designer of illusions for a stage magician, so his special skill is that he can see through deceptions and fakery and false alibis, etc. The mysteries are always convoluted locked room puzzles or that kind of "impossible crime" situation. They're not very plausible -- why would you kill someone like this? -- and they're contrived but sometimes they're pretty good and I always like guessing them.

Kind of a three-quarters recommendation if you like Monk's style of mystery, which also tended to be "impossible crimes."

106 they're a bit similar. Chandler took Hammett's stories as his model.

Yeah. Hammett is less literary, more street, and just a little bit bent -- he's not a criminal but he's not above bending the law and lying or covering up if he thinks its a good cause. And he was having an affair with his partner's wife, and every other woman he could manage to attract.

But both of them had a line they wouldn't cross, and would do anything no matter how painful if they felt it had to be done. Both of them dealt with crooked, nasty people without becoming corrupted themselves. There are a lot of similiarities.

I hate the mouse about as much as you guys, but this accusation is silly.

A bunch of gay activists decided to have a gay day at Disney.
Disney is open to just about anyone who will pay the fee, as long as you're generally behaving yourself, they're not going to tell you not to come.
Disney also recognized a lot of families don't want to attend during gay day, so they started low key warning people who scheduled their vacation during gay day.

It was NOT a Disney initiated or sponsored event.

Neeson's not a bad Marlowe, physically. Remember, in the mid-'40s he was considered a pretty good-looking guy by some of the women he met, esp. in Farewell My Lovely, the second one and the one Ace quotes the hypoboles from.

Part of the flavor will depend on whether they get the clothes and fedoras right.

Chandler didn't really care that much about the mystery, that was just an excuse to put his character into the world and see how it played out. If you're just along for the ride, its magnificent. If you're the kind that is really fixed on the mystery its going to be a rough ride.

Hammett was a damned good plotter and he was great with words and dialog, but he wasn't as literary as Chandler, who with his classical education went place Hammett didn't know. Its not that he's better, if I had to choose between them, I'd say Hammett was the better writer, but Chandler just had a way of putting things and creating scenes that were simply incredible.

152 Marvel really should have just ended with Avengers: Endgame.

Then they could have started a DIFFERENT storyline with entirely new group of superheroes for a few movies, maybe even slowly introduced the Eternals or something instead of cramming them into one movie.

They had the near-perfect formula. They were just too impatient to keep crapping out content, oversaturating the market with "meh" product, at best, and "ugh" product at worst.

160 Hammett was a damned good plotter and he was great with words and dialog, but he wasn't as literary as Chandler, who with his classical education went place Hammett didn't know. Its not that he's better, if I had to choose between them, I'd say Hammett was the better writer, but Chandler just had a way of putting things and creating scenes that were simply incredible.

That was a standout episode, well done and it had an urgency and drama that most lacked. Monk's feel was weird, like it was a soft, safe world that pretended to be dangerous sometimes.

And I got really, really sick of the show being 25% about Monk being odd. did you know he was odd? He's odd. See how he's odd? His oddness is odd. How odd. Yeah. We get it. We got it the first episode.

It might be a show that doesn't binge well because of that.

172 The best Hammett line is from one of the Continental Op stories. The Op tells a woman criminal: "You think I'm a man and you're a woman. That's wrong. I'm a hunter and you're just something that's running in front of me."

Ace quoted two of the best Marlowe lines from Chandler. In that same novel, Marlowe describes an old woman drunk he's interviewed: "I took her some rye and she is a girl who will take a drink if she has to knock you down to get to the bottle."

Earlier, he has come to visit a potential client, a clearly gay aesthete who is proud of a new abstract sculpture he's bought, "Asta Dial's 'Spirit of Dawn.' " Annoyed by the guy, Marlowe says, "I thought it was Klopstein's 'Two Warts on a Fanny.' "

Time-travel/multiverse stories are *very* difficult to tell, almost as hard as comedy.

They almost always rely on the creation of a stable time loop where the heroes must play out key roles in order to complete the loop and not destroy reality in some way.

Doctor Who always played fast and loose with this rule, but the best stories usually involve creative loophole abuse in some way that establishes the importance of proper causality.

You're glibly dismissing what I said, but there is actually a very important conversation to be had about how evil will creep in slowly and patiently in any open society that recognizes individual rights.

Even authoritarian regimes which entertain some socially conservative values and who crack down on things like drug use, sexual permissiveness, etc. eventually either have to wipe out entire populations or become more permissive to the people's vices.

It's a sort of spiritual entropy that WILL happen any time a society loses their connection to God.

231 With the destruction of the Infinity Stones after "The Snap" the only way the heroes could undo what happened was with a ludicrous time travel plot.

And it was pointless. They were so fixated on getting to the multiverse, they screwed themselves. They didn't HAVE to make the stones destroyed (its a bit of a puzzle how that could be done, anyway), they chose to in a single throwaway line.

A better plot would have been to have them have to go through a series of amazing adventures to get each stone, weaving the more fantastical cosmic elements of the Marvel Universe like Eternity and Ego and The Living Tribunal, Adam Warlock etc and then assemble them to fix the events of the previous movie.

But no. They went with matching jumpers and time travel and ... yeah.

Funny Dorothy Parker story: Lillian is visiting Dottie and her husband Alan in the winter at their country place. Lillian and Dottie are sitting by a roaring fire while Alan is arguing loudly with his mother upstairs. Then Alan comes thumping down and snaps, "It's hot as hell in here."

"Not for orphans," Dottie says, and Lillian almost chokes laughing.

(Dorothy admired Hammett almost as much as she did Hemingway. Neither of them liked her.)

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at January 23, 2023 05:11 PM (YIVH2)

Oh there were multiple ways to undo The Snap, they could have turned to the Celestials, they could have reasoned with or pleaded with Thanos to reverse it (perhaps ala the end of Dr. Strange 1), They could have said all the dead souls were inside the soul stone and then do a heist to steal and destroy just it. Or gone into the soul stone to release everyone. Etc.

No shortage of other ideas. But they chose stupidly.

The original point stands.

Everything after the first film lacks motivation. Wick was suicidal and, being the best at what he does, the idea that he could get lucky just enough to accomplish that single-minded task is almost believable. It could happen if the cards were all exactly right.

Nothing after the first movie makes any sense.

311 i signed up for BritBox just to watch Jonathan Creek.

Creek is ok but suffers in the last season. Found it a diversion. Try New Tricks--not much action but excellent cast. Ditto for the Sandbaggers--the protagonist is a nasty person which over time you understand why. Want action with less talking--watch The Sweeney which is a Brit take on US cop shows.Shakespeare and Hathaway is a bit of throwaway fun.

You might also like the more offbeat stuff on Acorn like Agatha Raisin, No Offense, or Strange Calls. You also have the spycatcher series of Palfrey of Westminster.

314 Didn't Powers Boothe play Marlowe?

I watched an interview with Mel Blanc and it occurs to me that these accents (Bogart's Brooklyn) are gone forever. Radio didn't wipe them out but television has.

No, all the painfully skinny, moonfaced chicks in Hollywood have implants. Maybe if they CGI'd the actors flat.

327 Marlowe talks like Chandler writes. Read his essay "The Simple Art of Murder" - which is just a simple recounting of the evolution of the detective story from August Dupuin through Holmes and Christie to where it was in Chandler's day - and you can _smell_ the whiskey and cigarettes; you can see the bulge in Chandler's pocket from the hot gat he took off the gunsel who tried to roll him in the alley on the way in.

331 I like the cut of this new-guy Lamont's jib, as well as his detailed understanding of Phillip Marlowe. Man, with posts his, I wouldn't even need to read the comments, I could come here to read the posts even.

Andrew Klavan's take on the three hard boiled detectives (maybe not unique) was interesting and got me to read a few. He posits that each was different response to the cultural crisis of the two world wars, and the loss of cultural identity and hope. Marlowe represented chivalry, a man of such honor that he could never say he was such. Chandler wrote an essay about it. Hammer was the Strong-Man solution, and Spade was Nihilism or existentialism or something (nihilism doesn't really fit him in The Maltese Falcon)

335 Conned the husband into going to see Plane last weekend, we both really liked it (and he's not a big movie fan). Low key action movie where people behave like real people might, the story makes sense (ish), no crazy special effects. Plus Gerard Butler makes me all swoonie and heart eyed.

336 65 Movies that got Marlowe right: The Big Sleep with Bogart, Murder my Sweet with Dick Powell. Powell is particularly good at being a smug, know it all prick...because Marlowe was a smug, know it all prick. But both actor interpretations have that underlayer of toughness under the snappy comebacks.

Loved Murder, My Sweet for a few reasons. The title change from Farewell, My Lovely was because Dick Powell had been in mostly romances before this movie, and they didn't want to accidentally draw in an unsuspecting audience.

And the best line from any detective comes after the femme fatale says, "I find men very attractive." He casually gives her a once-over and says, "I imagine they meet you halfway."
