KT use if you want. I just thought this was adorable. Blue is on the far right, he was a Shep's dog who got adopted. As you see he seems to have fit right in. He was my favorite!Sweet photo! Even the pups who aren't Blue are sweet! Good afternoon Sadly our cat Mischief passed away shortly before Christmas. Our veterinarian (Plaistow-Kingston Animal Medical Center) was very kind during the euthanasia process. They also sent a card, cat angel, and a paw print of him. He was very vocal and he used to "talk" to my wife about the issues and events of the day. But mostly asking for more cat treats... Thanks as always for the Pet Thread content and of course everything Ace of Spades HQ. RodentSo sorry for the loss of your lovely cat, Rodent. Your vet is very thoughtful. This is, well, a pooch I found wandering in our neighborhood, as he was followed by animal control. I asked the very nice animal control lady if I could take him, so as to avoid him winding up at the country shelter. She readily agreed, with two stipulations: She needed my a copy of my id and I had to go to the shelter and fill out a found dog report. No brainer, actually, I agreed, took the pooch home and my wife and I are diligently searching for the owner. He's very relaxed and settled in with our other two within a couple of hours. In case anyone is wondering, my wife is fully on board with doing this kind of thing. Neither of us like to see pooches in shelters if there's anything we can do about it. We've yet to name him, as we think he's got an owner who probably misses him terribly. Or, at least, we hope so. The pooch is too well cared for to be a random stray that's been wandering loose for a while. This is a BIG wandering pooch. Hope you can find his missing family. This is our most recent addition to the family, Bailey. She's keeping an eye on the new guy. My wife and I thought we would be without a pooch, shortly, due to the health issues our other Golden Retriever has. Hah. We're now a three dog family. (Old pooch is missing from these pictures.Bailey looks like a fine dog. This is Nikki doing what she does best: Lay around and use those eyes to pull in the unsuspecting for attention. Poor girl was born with deformed front paws, but, still quite enthusiastic about food and attention, even at almost 15 years of age. We still can't believe we got her at age 10 and still have her around. BlakeWho wouldn't love Nikki? My dogs are couch eaters too. We got stuck in Las Vegas last year for about a week, so the dogs, who were cared for by a neighbor kid, ate the couch. All of the couch. Looked like it had snowed in the entire living room. Nothing left but the frame.
But at least they weren't bored any more..... Posted by: tcn in AK, Hail to the Thief at January 21, 2023 03:42 PM (LOVUx) 12
My dog loved the snow. He could not get enough of it. His thing was to lay outside in a snow storm and fall asleep until he got completely covered and vanished. Then if you eventually called him he would pop up in in a mini snow mushroom cloud. I should have named him snow drift. He was a Samoyed. I guess snow is in their DNA, but he was insane with snow.

Sorry for those that had a beloved pet die recently.
Just took Jake out in the snow. I put a coat on him so that he'd track less snow inside. I miss my old dog, Loretta. She was my snow puppy. I have pictures of her as a puppy, plunging through snow deeper than her belly. Posted by: Notsothoreau at January 21, 2023 03:44 PM (4IUUf) 14

Do dogs destroy couches because they are bored or because they feel anxiety at being left alone or. Because it's fun, or some combination of the three?

And took the cat to the vets yesterday. She is still chewing on her sides. I originally thought it was stress from the move. But she's not stressed any more. I'd decided it was fleas, even though I don't find anything when I comb her. They did find flea dirt on her. They did an antibiotic shot, shaved the hair around the wounds a bit and gave me some flea stuff. I've put flea stuff on the carpet and some non-chemical flea stuff on Jake. Fanny does seem like she's feeling better today.

Speaking of found dogs, yesterday afternoon we were sitting in the living room when our dog, Luna, went out the pet door. I glanced her way and saw another animal on our porch. Uh oh, raccoon!! Nope, it was a female miniature schnauzer who had somehow gotten inside our fenced yard. Luna was like, "Oooh, playmate!!"
The little visitor was cautious at first but quickly made herself mistress of our house. Nextdoor did the job and the dog's anxious mom showed up at our doorstep to claim her within 2 hours. Happy ending but now we are wondering if Luna needs a companion. It's something we never considered because when we first adopted her there was reason to think she was aggressive with other dogs. Turns out she's not at all. So we may go from no pets for 20 years to two dogs. Or maybe not. We have a really special, close relationship with Luna. Not sure if we are ready to change that. As always, great pets!
I had to put my cat Allie in "the penalty box," aka the Isolation Chamber, aka my library. She was apparently so stressed this past Friday that she started eliminating all over my kitchen, including pooping on top of the kitchen cabinets. Not cool. So she's now hanging out in the library by herself. No other kitties allowed. Seems to be much more relaxed. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at January 21, 2023 03:57 PM (BpYfr) 27
Fenelon we have a dog at Shep's that tears up furniture, rugs, you name it. It didn't start until we found out he has cancer. It must be an anxiety thing. I can tell it calms him down. The place always looks like a tornado went through it!

Mischief caused my allergies to flare up a bit. Pretty cat.
And THIS is why I'm a cat person pic: Heh. Daisy (a/k/a "Jaws") has been busily gutting every squeaky chew toy; also unweaving her rag rug; also gutting her nice fluffy bedcushion, stupid critter. At least it's not the furniture or shoes anymore— but, boy, she really likes pulling the fluffy guts out of her toys. Did an overdue major clean-up yesterday. A few well-chewed old friends went in the trash today. I like the durable squeaky balls she can't destroy, but they doesn't satisfy her urge to destroy. She just came up to me with a not-destroyed fluffy shark that has three squeakers in it. She can put on quite a concerto. Ony cat keeps getting bolder, and it's really funny to see the big musclebound dog flee and get cornered by that terrifying little black housecat. They'll get jumpy and hissy (I think it's play) whenever they meet each other, but we've noted that in the kitchen when we're making food is truce territory. Mischief was handsome indeed. I have similar mementoes of Wolf and Chekov, and the ashes of Oreo and Tatiana from earlier. The great Arizona's ashes are part of the ecology up in the Colorado mountains, where I sprinkled them in late 1999 or early 2000. As for my two furry thugs: Stirling is easygoing and good-natured, as always, and has mellowed from the wild kitten of this summer. He weighs close to 10 lbs. now at 10 months of age. He still sleeps with me and kneads and nuzzles me in the mornings.
Dagny is growing and filling out, but is still small compared to him despite being only 2 weeks younger. She also has Oppositional Defiance Disorder. So do most cats, of course, but she is really determined to do as she pleases, including sofa scratching (though they both use the roped scratching post too) and galloping around at high speed, risking collision with my water glass. When she rests and is somewhat affectionate, she is great company. Cats. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 21, 2023 04:34 PM (omVj0) 66
I was looking at a couple of shelter dogs. But they made me fill out a ream of papers, and then told me I'd have to get my ancient, housebound cat vaccinated for cat AIDS before they'd let me have a dog... That's super stupid, and it's too much bureaucracy. I said "screw it," and got my awesome new dog from Craigslist.
Get your dogs from anywhere but a shelter. You show up with the money, and you get the dog. Before that person gives up and sends the dog to a shelter, where they'll just gas the dog, before running the risk of exposing him to nonexistent cat AIDS. An FIV-positive cat can't live with cats who are not positive, I think, because they can contract it. The skinny black shorthair I took to the local shelter about 4 years ago had it, they told me. Great looking pets today!
Rodent you have a wonderful vet. What a nice touch that they would not only give a sweet card and paw print, but a angel cat statue too. Posted by: redridinghood at January 21, 2023 04:44 PM (NpAcC) 80
The current two have known human care since their eyes opened; they don't know what a tough world it is out there.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius Lucy the Fink was a shelter rescue. She hid from us for a month. Then would not let us touch her for several more. It took three years before she sat on anyones lap. And it was Marine's lap first. Another several months before she purred. Now she loves her pets and brushes and treats. She prefers the company of men to women, but that's ok. I do too. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 21, 2023 04:42 PM (omVj0) --- Yep. When Hexie showed up at my house this past Christmas, I made sure to take her to the vet and get her checked out for transmissible diseases (FIV, parasites, etc.) before I ever let her come into contact with my other cats. Fortunately, she passed with flying colors and is now camped out on my spot on the couch. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at January 21, 2023 04:51 PM (BpYfr) 84

Posted by: nurse ratched at January 21, 2023 *** Angelique the blue-eyed Siberian I rescued from an empty parking lot one Saturday morning. Though she jumped into the car onto my lap, Miss Linda says that she seemed to have forgotten how to purr and growled if you moved when she was sitting on you. Which was all the time. Eventually she purred again, but never lost the growling thing. Fortunately she walked right into her carrier. It would have been a terrible battle to get her in there if she'd resisted. There were some longhaired adult cats I liked on PetFinder last May before I found Stirling. Each shelter, when I wrote, sent me an application form with nosey-parker questions (one app was 4 pages long!), and/or insisted I'd have to wear a face diaper at the shelter. Ain't' doin' that. It actually makes me sad that Lucy hates the car so much. I would take her on road trips a couple times a month if she did t get so stressed.
I've tried acclimating her to short trips. She still pants and pees and hates it. Oh well. I really would love an adventure cat. Posted by: nurse ratched at January 21, 2023 04:54 PM (U2p+3) 87

Posted by: nurse ratched at January 21, 2023 *** Nearly all my cats have been the same way. Marie-Antoinette the Black Queen, though, was fine with travel in her carrier. Stirling and Dagny had to be transferred back and forth between Linda's place and mine this fall because he was still male and was going, "Hel-lo, bay-bee!" with her. So she'd stay with me for 2 days while Stirling was with Miss Linda, then vice versa. He walked right into his carrier, and she was easy to urge into hers. I gave in and took Jake for a drive. He sounded like a teen aged girl, with all those deep sighs and longing looks out the window. Snow is several inches deep, definitely over ankle deep. Nothing has been plowed but I have a 4x4. I headed to the lake, but didn't go to the regular spot as it looked like turning around might be tricky. So I stopped on the road and let him run around off the side. Not sure it was what he wanted.

And it's a shame these shelters are such a pain in the ass.
I can't be the only guy who jumped through those hoops, up to a point, and then said "whatever, fuck this. I'll take my chances on Craigslist," and was pleasantly surprised by his awesome new Craigslist dog. The shelter was the first place I looked, because my reasoning was "they'll gas the dog if I don't." But if you get the dog pre-shelter, then it also won't get gassed. I'm thinking these places make it easy for people to drop dogs off for gassing, and hard to prevent it. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 21, 2023 05:01 PM (oINRc) 92

Cats usually hate cars. I think because there's nowhere to run* and it instinctively freaks them out. Cats always like to map out every hidey hole and escape route, before they can be comfortable.
*Nowhere To Run is also an awesome Van Damme movie, where he foils the evil plans of a British property developer and bangs Rosanna Arquette. Jus' sayin'. You should watch it. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 21, 2023 05:15 PM (oINRc) 98

Just vacuumed the carpet. Oddly, these two do not run from it. They remain, wary, wherever they're settled and watch me, and no doubt they hate the noise, but they don't run away as most of my felines have. Come to think of it, the only time I've seen Stirling be less than confident was New Year's Eve. The firework noises freaked him out and he hid under the bed.

My cat Tux is a CL cat. Depending on the area CL listings may be very sparse and sometimes the county shelters are pretty good about adopting out the pets that come in and are not quite as redonkulous as the 'rescues' with the screening. Toby landed in a shelter, not sure it was the county lockup one, and he is a good dog. He's an escape artist from yards but dad being retired and home all the time he's never run off.
