Domestic Shooting Cafe

Note the remains of a Roman fort at bottom center.
Here's the link to expand the picture.

Wife gets vengeance on husband for pranks.

I guess this whole family's on high alert about the other members being "armed" so one of their tactics is to have weapons delivered into their hands without their victim seeing -- dropping from the ceiling, etc.

Husband enlists daughter in plot to shoot wife.

Nope!

Nope!

More of the family shooting each other.

And more.

And still more.

The children are targets too.

Kids get involved with a lot of weapon hand-offs.

Here's what everyone must be wondering about: The clean-up. There's a lot of cleaning up.

Wife getting in position to get vengeance on husband, for the behind-the-refrigerator shot. These ambushes take a lot of work and preparation.

27 Re Sidebar, Venus and Saturn:

I've got my new telescope arriving this evening (in theory, all the things are late or lost all the time).

It's this insanely cool compact digital smart telescope, that's cheap AF. Called the Dwarf II, it's getting rave reviews and compares favorably with the cassegrain types and reflectors. I took all kinds of astronomy in college and don't remember squat. This thing you just tell it to point at "X" and it will track it. All works with your smartphone/tablet and takes pics of course.

It wasn't supposed to arrive until mid feb, so now I can hopefully observe the green comet! Now that I live out where there's less light pollution, I'm really looking forward to it. If I get into it, I can certainly upgrade while using this little guy to backpack/carry easily.

60 > I mean its just common sense. if you claim to have faith but do not change or show any actions that demonstrate that faith, you do not have saving faith. Not exactly puzzling. Has nothing to do with salvation.

It's bizarre to me how stuck people get on the idea that you can't work your way into heaven, so they conclude work has nothing to do with salvation.

Like you said, it's common sense. You do everything you can. You will fall short, but God knows your heart and will make up the shortfall if He determines you've followed the Gospel to the degree He knows you can.

No, you can't do it without Jesus' sacrifice making up for the sins in your life. Yes, you have to do everything you can to incorporate Jesus' saving grace in your life via repentance.

So many people get stuck in this completely illogical la la land where you can't save yourself but you need to accept Jesus but you can't save yourself but you need to be baptized but you can't save yourself but you need to practice pure religion but you can't save yourself but you must do works to have living faith but still your works have absolutely nothing to do with your salvation. Obviously they do.

I was talking about that verse, we can discuss the idea of working your way into heaven or not, but that verse and its context obviously are contrasting people with genuine faith that shows its self through works and those without it, trying to encourage believers to live out their faith.

That's about sanctification, not justification. Trying to prove works righteousness with that is doing violence to the passage and James' entire point.

98 I was talking about that verse, we can discuss the idea of working your way into heaven or not, but that verse and its context obviously are contrasting people with genuine faith that shows its self through works and those without it, trying to encourage believers to live out their faith.

That's about sanctification, not justification. Trying to prove works righteousness with that is doing violence to the passage and James' entire point.

Catholics, per the Council of Trent believes that justification is by faith and sanctification is through works/material processes(and/or purgatory). At the time it was referred to as "the second justification" to clarify.

The error that Catholics fear some may fall into is the notion that faith is a belief in an intellectual proposition. Faith, meaning to trust, involves acting with confidence in certain things.

Wut? I understand James' point very clearly. He says you need to both have Faith in Him and you need to do what He asks of you. Obviously, the passage clearly indicates both are essential.

It sounds like you have some understanding that acknowledges Man's part, but at the same time completely dismisses it.

Yes, our part is miniscule compared to God's. Yes, it's impossible without God. No, our part is not immaterial in the process.

Well, living a good Christian life is hard. It takes work to fight human nature every day. If it makes no difference to my grace, what is the point. You do it because you want to, they say. And what is the point of God granting Grace if he, by odds, is just going to cast me into hell anyway? I guess it is a slightly better hell?

Problem: The puddle of water on your garage/basement/shed floor after you bring in your snow covered snow blower.

Solution: A large dog crate pan, at least 24x36 inches. Wheel the snow blower on to this plastic tray and it will catch and hold all the melting ice.

182 [Calvinists] believed that in all humanity God has only chosen 186,000 as the elect. He will grant you Grace through acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Savior, but you will never know you are among the elect until you know. Everyone else goes to hell. And, since God never makes a mistake, grace are elect status are irrevocable no matter how shitty of a human being you are afterward.

192 Paul is talking about the Mosaic law. Paul was charged with ministering the Gentiles (Cephas converted Jews). After Paul founded the church in Galatia, Cephas and some of his ministers came in and convinced the former gentiles that they needed to first convert to judiasm, and comply with Jewish law before becoming Christians. Paul rebukes them, and says that people formerly were under guardianship of the mosaic law, but now that Christ has come, we are all saved as brothers in faith.

St. Paul is stating that Christians are no longer bound by the Mosaic Law of the Jews. Christians initially viewed themselves as Jews (I suppose modern Messianic Jews are somewhat analogous). There was an early debate on whether Gentile converts to Christianity needed to become circumcised.

That was discussed at the Jerusalem council. Some insisted that gentiles needed to first conform to all of the mosaic laws, including circumcision. Cephas (Peter) agreed with Paul that conversion was not necessary, but it would be better if the circumcised converted the circumcised, and the uncirced, converted the gentiles. This was Paul's assignment.

Strictly speaking, while it is not heavan that is finite, most Christian sects afaik believe the people who go to heaven are known in advance due to God being omniscient. This is held by Calvinists to contradict free will(and so they conclude there is no free will and things are predetermined) while other sects try to resolve this with other theories.

This was the view of the main church in Jerusalem (under James?) in the early Church and Paul got into a discussion / fight over it. The ex-Jews to still Jew communities there got caught up in the Jewish Revolt in the 60-70 AD period and lost their influence if not their lives as fallout from the war. After that it became better to emphasize distinctions from Jews and after the *next* Jewish revolt it got worse.

This treats it as a pure yes/no, which is not really how people experience it.

It takes far more faith to be a martyr than to lend a small amount of aid. And generally this is something you work on and develop over time.

Using Moses as an example, though he has a far amount of faith in God, when he strikes the rock a second time to get water, he shows weakness in faith at that moment. He falls back on a method he has seen before instead of trusting what God told him to do. It's very human but also clearly illustrates that this isn't just an absolute yes/no that we are strong in at all times or strong in never.

There's a lot of theories about how to estimate the number. "more than the number of fallen angels" suggests meeting the criteria that Christ's kingdom would be larger than Satan's while also satisfying other aspects of his approach.

It is common to hold that roughly one third of the angels rebelled, using Revelations's 1/3rd stars wiped from the sky as the basis.

If I were to put forth an optimistic argument, I see no reason that the proportion of men to side with God would be less than the proportion of angels.

There are six slots in heaven and everyone is really saved are equally silly. We humble ourselves before God and beg forgiveness. One is not secretly begging forgiveness when one spites and hates the word of God.

Dante is a secular heresy if taken seriously as a work of cosmology for the faith, one of the troubling things to me as a youth helping refugees to pass the citizenship and language tests was the lack of salvation for the Buddhists.

231 > St. Paul is stating that Christians are no longer bound by the Mosaic Law of the Jews. Christians initially viewed themselves as Jews (I suppose modern Messianic Jews are somewhat analogous). There was an early debate on whether Gentile converts to Christianity needed to become circumcised.

Idk. I have spent more hours than I can count going over Anselm's "quo majus". And it has been worth every second.

Leibniz and Hegel felt he was a world historic thinker. Descartes' "cogito ergo" was a reference and slight on Anselm. Kant took the time to insultingly dismiss him.

I can say he is not someone to be dismissed lightly.

3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law.
4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.
6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. (Galatians 5:2, ESV)

Fwiw, I agree with the Church's decision. The Donatists were wrong but perfectly understandable. The issue was whether or not the sacraments could be performed by Apostates and priests eho had converted to another religion. I suppose allowing Apostate priests to perform sacraments was a "moderate" position in some ways. But whew it was a thorny thorny issue with massive ramifications theologically.

304 Pho is something I leave to the pros. A good broth can take days to make. But I've been lucky to have access to excellent restaurant pho over the years. Actually no place in Vietnam bested my couple old favorites in the US.

Other Vietnamese stuff I've also drifted away from, things one can do at home pretty easily. Good caramel pork and green papaya salad with the spicy jerky, old stand-bys I haven't made in eons.

Wonder if the banh mi "fast food" pilot project by - not sure, maybe Yum! Foods, parent of a few major chains? - worked out. I recall they were going to try it in Orange or LA County. Orange County they'd be going up against a lot of established independents, plus the Lee chain.

316 The thing about banh mi is the formula is pretty simple but demanding. You need just-out-of-the-oven fresh baguettes, and it needs to be cheap. The two main things. Of course fillings matter but those might be less of a challenge than those other things.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 23, 2023 09:33 PM (OTzUX)
