But the wrong kind of Christian, which has often been worse than being total infidel.

60 I don't think the Crusaders "captured" Constantinople. I think the Byzantines invited them to enter their territory to march on to Jerusalem. But, if you spent your life fighting your neighbors over local villages and pig sties, that shining city on the Bosporus could certainly make your sword hand itchy.

66 Delacroix brings a scene to life with his paintings. So much color and movement and so effectively done. Even if the scene is horrific, like today's, it is always interesting and captivating for the viewer.

I remember, fondly, the big color panels in the Sunday 'Prince Valiant" comics. I winder if Eugene Delacroix was an influence on Hal Foster.

I wasn't available to comment during yesterday's art thread but looked at it later. Major thanks for using a Julie Hart Beers painting. I wasn't aware of her work but looked them up. She was an amazing artist. Her landscapes are not usually huge vistas of overpowering nature. They are smaller and intimate, something you might see on a walk in a (perfect) world. Enlarging the images let's you see how she applied the paint which is an education in its own way.

116 If you ever want to learn about a savage attack on Turks, read about the siege and assault on Ochakov by my main man Grigory Potemkin. Bloodbath. Looting on a massive scale. The whole Russian magilla.

It also more-or-less cemented Russian control of Ukraine, which we're obviously still wrangling with today.

118 I don't think the Crusaders "captured" Constantinople. I think the Byzantines invited them to enter their territory to march on to Jerusalem

A dethroned Byzantine noble offered Venice and the Crusaders a ridiculous amount of wealth if they put him back on the throne.

Note: he didn't have the money, and even given the throne back he couldn't pay it.

So...they looted the city instead.

The crusaders were deeply in hock to their financiers, the Venetians, who steered the operation to Constantinople, more or less.
Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls - an election is simply a festival for the majority at January 24, 2023 09:48 AM (KFhLj)

The Constantinople bit was driven more by the Byzantines.

1. An emperor lost his throne and hired the crusaders to get it back.
2. They put him back but the empire is strapped for cash so there's some delay from this as the reinstated try to raise funds.
3. The just reinstated get overthrown again while the crusaders are working on their behalf elsewhere
4. New emperor refuses to pay and so a siege begins and Constantinople is sacked.

154 The Constantinople bit was driven more by the Byzantines.

But the reason the offer to become involved in Byzantine politics was appealing in the first place is because part of what was offered in payment was payment of the Venetian debt (sack of a previous city should have resolved that but, unsurprisingly, the crusaders and Venetians didn't see eye to eye about that).

The troop count wasn't really all that different between the two sieges. Given the difficulty and relative numbers, Constantinople must have been better fortified when the Turks took it.

Main issue with the Byzantine empire was it had fairly frequent civil wars and rebellions and was often fractured. And this was the case before the 4th Crusade, which got wrapped up in the latest such conflict.

249 On the topic of alt-history, even had Constantinople survived that latest Ottoman siege their position wasn't great. While the Schism was near-mended at that time, it had been less than a decade since the Crusade of Varna failed rather disastrously. Not entirely impossible that more unified resistance might have reversed the Byzantine empire's situation, but it's also not a sure thing that there would have been any large or timely response.

255 Like this a lot. Would hang.

Constantinople was deliberate in several ways.

1) Constantine wanted a new capital (he was that kind of guy.)

2) It had to be an explicitly Christian City without any pagan background. Byzantium (on the site Constantinople was built) had been sacked and burned to the ground several times in the recent history. So while it was strategically important and was a crossroads town, it had no real history beyond that.

3) He wanted a spot, if fortified correctly, that would be the most defensible spot on earth. Byzantium fit the bill because it was on a narrow peninsula. Covered by three sides by water, it could be supplied from there, so all you had to do was fortify one side. It never fell (except for the Crusaders) in 1000 years.

The announcement would be part of a broader diplomatic understanding with Germany in which Berlin would agree to send a smaller number of its own Leopard 2 tanks and would also approve the delivery of more of the German-made tanks by Poland and other nations

I saw an interesting YT interview on this topic. It seems that the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is the only one who doesn't want to send the Leopards. The other European countries, as well as the other German parties, all want to send them.

It's a little unclear why, but the best guess is that a Russian defeat would greatly complicate their economic situation, presumable because their high cost manufacturing relies on cheap Russian energy.

The excuse given is that they are worried about a Russian nuclear strike, but nobody believes that.

The existence of “homosexual clubs” is particularly prevalent in the US, Benedict said in his book, adding: “In several seminaries, homosexual clubs operate more or less openly.”

I've heard priests say this was particularly prevalent in the 70s and declined somewhat since then. Don't know how big the issue is today.

Yeah, which is sad because the secret to the roman success had been a sense of duty and honor for the common good. But that all went away when the Citizen Farmer went by the way side.

Learned recently that one of my uncles went to seminary because he wanted more than anything to be a priest. Came back a year later. Refused to talk about anything there and stopped going to mass. My mom suspects that perversion at the seminary is what drove him away.

358 OK, that is concerning for a number of reasons. However, logistically this doesn't make sense. The Abrams runs on Jet fuel, the Leopard runs on diesel. The Abrams is more complicated to operate than the Leopard. The Abrams and leopard both have more advanced targeting technology than the Russian have and that technology is sure to get into Russian hands. Big escalation. The training curve is steep for both systems and would include NATO troops.

Note ina typically Russian way, RUS is very particualr about calling UKR conflict the SMO. It is an operation furthering a larger Strategy.

UKR is an operational conflict for both sides.

385 "As I understand it, the Crusader troops were tired of travel and basically said 'Why should we go any further to fight heretics when there are plenty of them right here?'"

Not exactly. Enrico Dandolo, the doge of Venice, had agreed to transport the Crusaders to the Holy Land, but changed an exorbitant fee for their services. When the Crusaders couldn't meet his price, he offered them a deal: Help us to replace a deposed emperor of Byzantium back on his throne, and we'll call it quits. Dandolo loathed the Byzantines due to his time spent in Constantinople during the time of the emperor Manuel Comnenus; it is said that he was blinded as a rersult of mistreatment there. In any event, the Crusaders took him up on his deal (despite being threatened with excommunication by the Pope); and the rest, as they say, is history. IMHO, the Fourth Crusade was the most catastrophic war, in terms of its effects on subsequent events, in European history, possibly excepting the First World War.
