The Rise of the SWF, the Single Woke Female

Unmarried women without children have been moving toward the Democratic Party for several years, but the 2022 midterms may have been their electoral coming-out party as they proved the chief break on the predicted Republican wave. While married men and women as well as unmarried men broke for the GOP, CNN exit polls found that 68% of unmarried women voted for Democrats.
The Supreme Court's August decision overturning Roe v. Wade was certainly a special factor in the midterms, but longer-term trends show that single, childless women are joining African Americans as the Democrats' most reliable supporters.
Their power is growing thanks to the demographic winds. The number of never married women has grown from about 20% in 1950 to over 30% in 2022, while the percentage of married women has declined from almost 70% in 1950 to under 50% today. Overall, the percentage of married households with children has declined from 37% in 1976 to 21% today.

A new Institute for Family Studies analysis of 2020 Census data found that one in six women do not have children by the time they reach the end of their childbearing years, up from one in ten in 1990. Single adult women now total some 42 million, comparable to the key African American voting bloc (46 million), while vastly larger than key groups like labor union members (14 million) or college students (20 million).
The Pew Research Center notes that since 1960, single-person households in the United States have grown from 13% to 27% (2019). Many, particularly women, are not all that keen on finding a partner. Pew recently found that "men are far more likely than women to be on the dating market: 61% of single men say they are currently looking for a relationship or dates, compared with 38% of single women."
There's clearly far less stigma attached to being single and unpartnered. Single women today have many impressive role models of unattached, childless women who have succeeded on their own -- like Taylor Swift and much of the U.S. women's soccer team.

This phenomenon is not confined to the United States. Marriage and birthrates have fallen in much of the world, including Europe and Japan. Writing in Britain's Guardian newspaper, columnist Emma John observed that, "Singleness is no longer to be sneered at. Never marrying or taking a long-term partner is increasingly seen as a valid choice."

Attitudes are what most distinguish single women from other voters. An American Enterprise Institute survey shows that married men and women are far more likely than unmarried females to think women are well-treated or equally treated. As they grow in numbers, these discontented younger single women are developing something of a group consciousness...
This perception of linked fate stands in contrast to survey results regarding single men, who report that they are increasingly disconnected from each other while women bond more closely. This is not a temporary phenomenon, and it is much bigger than the bohemian movements of the past. There is even a sense in which women are redefining families, and themselves, by choosing to neither get married nor have offspring. And social observers such as Bella DePaulo, a University of California, Santa Barbara professor and singles advocate, are all in favor. As she told Nautilus magazine:

"[It's] a tremendously positive thing! Once upon a time, just about everyone in the United States thought that they needed to squeeze themselves into the heterosexual nuclear family box, even if they weren't heterosexual or weren't interested in getting married or had no interest in raising kids. Now, people can create the lives and the families that allow them to live their best, most authentic, and most meaningful lives. They can choose to put friends at the center of their lives. Or they can assemble their very own combination of friends and family to be the social convoys that sail beside them as they navigate their lives. They can have kids in their lives without having children of their own."

Indeed, this seems to be a key part of their Personal Fulfillment plan -- they'll skip out on the duties, costs, and pains of motherhood, while grabbing the power of motherhood, in the form of morally instructing other people's children. See LibsofTikTok for more.

And they're all about "educating."

The key driver of these attitudes may be universities, where feminist ideology often holds powerful sway. Women now predominate on college campuses. In the late 1960s they were about 39% of college graduates; now they are about 59%. The percentage of full-time female professors has risen dramatically; at the full professor level the percentage has grown by roughly one-third.
Women now earn more than half of advanced degrees, not only in education but health and medical sciences, and are making great strides in engineering and law. With this growth, a feminist agenda has become increasingly de rigueur in colleges. According to the  National Center for Education Statistics, the number of women's and gender studies degrees in the United States has increased by more than 300% since 1990, and in 2015, there were more than 2,000 degrees conferred. There are widespread movements to establish women's centers almost everywhere, even as men are abandoning college and university life in record numbers, and those who remain are hit with messaging about behavior and status from diversity, equity, and inclusion offices along with various student life offices that regularly call them toxic, aggressive, and born misogynists.
More recently, anti-family attitudes have become more pronounced. "Queer studies" often advocate replacing the "nuclear family" with some form of collectivized childrearing. Progressive groups like Black Lives Matter made their opposition to the nuclear family a part of their basic original platform, even though evidence shows family breakdown has hurt African American boys most of all.

This is a very, very dire development.

And the opinion of that group will be very, very hard to shift if it is even possible. The best way to shift an opinion is a major disruption. Marriage or children are major disruptions that shift opinions. These women will not experience that. For some this is by choice and for others it is because they can't, but most will not whatever the reason. There are other possible disruptions like major economic setbacks, being victim of a crime, etc. but those are net-negative for everyone involved.

Sure you have some women that want to be single and not have kids, but according to any number of surveys most of those women wanted a man and kids. Why didn't they get them then?

1) The FNM lies to them about how easy it is to have kids when you are older. You should try to plan to have kids before 30. So if you want 2 kids you should be married and prepared by your mid 20s. The FNM tells you that you should be in party/career mindset at the point and YOU DON'T NEED NO MAN!

2) Hypergamy. Because of the internet and the FNM even once they women start looking for men somewhat seriously they think they are going to end up with the 1% of men (attractive, wealthy, over 6 ft tall). So many of them end up "the side chick" for those men since 80% of them are throwing themselves at the same men.

There's another really nasty group of these people who call themselves, "Child Free." If you talk with one of these creatures, they have a Motte and Bailey routine that's supremely irritating. Their safe position is that they don't like the social pressure to have kids. Their slightly more contentious safe position is that society is built around having kids, and they don't like having to pay taxes for other people's kids.

But if you see these creatures in their natural habitat, when they feel free to express their real opinion, they genuinely hate children, parents, and humans generally. They have nasty nicknames for kids like "crotch goblin." They'll tell each other stories in which they are inconvenienced by normal kid behavior in public and how parents should have to be licensed.

163 What's the urban/non-urban breakdown? In the city, having kids is very expensive. Getting a big enough place is really expensive. Getting them schooling is expensive. Feeding them is expensive. Transporting them is expensive.

In the suburbs and rural areas and small towns, it is much less daunting, primarily because of space. Space is plentiful and much more affordable. I wonder how many of these never married, childless women who never expect (or never want) to be married or mothers live in the city or in high-density largely urban suburbs.

Sure, but that is only a partial answer. A lot of men are finding these women. By definition, a lot of them *must* be finding these women. And there is no future there because these women neither want it nor are worth it.

To have any chance at all, the things you mentioned are necessary. But even once you achieve them, the pool is still getting shallower by the day as various parties check themselves out of it.

The unhappy single women I know are all addicted to social media. They see other women on cool vacations with their hot husbands and things like that constantly and it makes them jealous and furious.

Now they don't know the couple they are watching are up to their eyeballs in debt, or that the husband is cheating on the wife, or that the two of them haven't had sex since Trump was president.

But that would require society supporting that and also supporting a healthy decision making process (courting) to find someone with the same goals and values as you've got.

At least for young people who can honestly answer the question "do I want kids." Some people don't when they're young, some people never will, and the notion that EVERYONE has to get married and have a family of their own isn't healthy either. Better not to do so. And better not to have kids if you don't want to have kids.

But if you are a "I want kids" and you want a "family" wouldn't it be better to date with that goal in mind starting from whenever you come to that conclusion, even if you're a teenager? "I want babies and a family so I should try to date people who also want babies and a family".

You still don't have to have kids any time soon, but at least you're on the same page with someone who has the same long term goals.

Yup. And it's the essential component of progress. There are lots of incentives in the world, but sex and honor are *incredibly* powerful ones, at least for men. Marriage gets more men sex, and enables them to earn honor - the honor of being a husband and a father.

Want a man, on average, to work his ass off? Get him a wife and kids. Get him a stake in the future and he will produce like nothing you've ever seen. The hell they don't in my experience. UMC folks do nothing but signal and compete with each other via food consumed, social media connections, social values expressed, choice of spouse, cars, education of children, houses, vacays, clothes, and so on.

At parties, I am the person that listens more than talks and I hear this blather constantly on competition. Women perhaps are a bit crueler on it than men, but even among UMC men, you see the competition.

For the most part, the non-competitive people that happen to be at social occasions are considered 'weird', 'unsociable', 'strange', 'eccentric' and so on. For the most part though, a lot of that competition drops off with age and wisdom--at a certain point--you plateau in social status and acceptance or resignation occurs with other values becoming more important.
