McCarthy Loses A 5th Vote (And Now A 6th) For Speaker: How Long Will He Drag This Out?

McCarthy ain't the guy. It's pretty clear that even if he wins he will be hobbled by the lack of consensus and the surprising amount of push-back against his speakership. He (and McConnell) blew a huge opportunity in the 2022 midterm elections, and just for that he should be sent packing. Add his cozy connections to K Street and the oceans of lobbyist money and we arrive at a GOPe apparatchik who will simply manage our descent into 3rd World status.

Dump him, and choose someone with at least some intestinal fortitude and a political philosophy that doesn't hinge on his own bank accounts and connections.

Lauren Boebert: Trump Needs to Tell Kevin McCarthy to Bow Out of Speaker Race

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) said on Wednesday that former President Donald Trump should tell House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to withdraw his bid for speaker.

"Let's stop with the campaign smears and tactics to get people to turn against us, even having my favorite president call us and tell us we need to knock this off. I think this actually needs to be reversed. The president needs to call Kevin McCarthy that, 'Sir, you do not have the votes and it's time to withdraw.'"

Boebert has her own agenda, and too much of this sort of stuff is posturing for the future. But who is the best choice? No guesses here, but I wish that Trump hadn't entered into the fray. McCarthy will take his support (if that is worth anything) but never be loyal to Trump or Trumpism, so what's the point?

8 I agree with whoever it was on an earlier thread that said the goal of Gaetz, Boebert et al. is to force more concessions from McCarthy, not to replace him--or at least, that that was their initial goal. But if this deadlock continues, at some point people are going to decide a different leader needs to be chosen.

Either way it's a clear sign that he'd be a rotten speaker. On top of all the other signs.

Or is this as simple as an irretractable rebuke (justifiable to me) of McCarthy specifically for his performance to date?

Whatever, the process is proceeding as necessary and is a welcome development considering the rubberstamping cloakroom process we've been accustomed to not seeing. Just get it all out in the open and let a sliver of transparency sneak in.

And thank you, Mr. Crenshaw, for showing your ass. It's transparency like that that will spare us trying to decipher who you really are.

The reason it's so dangerous is because of that last point you made.

This is a political party at war with itself over whether or not to consider the possibility of appeasing its own base with a mid-value scalp thrown to them. McCarthy is moderate value. Nothing more. He's not McConnell. He's a power player but he's not irreplaceable. There are plenty of other cucked-out, tucked-under Uniparty drones they could put into place and operate just fine - but they don't want to do that. They want the base to get *nothing.*

Hold the line. Expose them. If it means the tge GOPe delivers Nancy Pelosi 2.0 so be it. We should’ve formed our own party in 2010. We ended up taking the lumps, anyway.

181 Yet another scalp, yet another scalp. Whether it's Boehner or Paul Ryan or then McCarthy, Scalise would just be next and we all know it.

Have you stopped to look at and weigh this observation, Dan? Have you paused a moment to consider *why* these people are so wildly hated by the base that you ostensibly represent?

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 04, 2023 06:50 PM (t0OGg)

182 This is a political party at war with itself over whether or not to consider the possibility of appeasing its own base with a mid-value scalp thrown to them. McCarthy is moderate value. Nothing more. He's not McConnell. He's a power player but he's not irreplaceable. There are plenty of other cucked-out, tucked-under Uniparty drones they could put into place and operate just fine - but they don't want to do that. They want the base to get *nothing.*

I would be somewhat less pessimistic if both McCarthy and McDaniel are jettisoned.

I just watched Jim Jordan give a speech in which he lambasted the recent $1.7T giveaway and said it must never happen again. McCarthy stood for the resulting ovation.

190 I definitely would rather have an actual Conservative as Speaker setting the agenda and House rules. No matter who the Speaker is, there's a couple handfuls of squishy RINOs who will vote with the Democrats when it matters most, so it's hard to care about whether the Speaker has "consensus".

Now if we can get Trump to open his eyes about what McCarthy actually is, that'd be great.

My greatest fear about this is that 25 or so McCarthy voters will switch their vote to Jeffries rather than have an actual Conservative as Speaker. In fact, I'm afraid this is the real end game, with McCarthy playing the "if I can't have it, ain't no Republican will have it" card.

That speaker would have zero power without the establishment and therefore would tread extremely lightly.

The reverse is that the freedom caucus only has veto power. It's great to see them weild it. But it would end after the speaker vote as the establishment would put forward bills moderately acceptable to Dems and would pull enough votes to pass them without the FC.

Speaker only has the power that that 218+ of the House members give him or her in the rules. You vote for Speaker first, then swear in members, and then comes voting on the House rules for the terms. While the Speaker is mentioned in the Constitution, the Constitution itself gives them no power beyond what members give them when passing the rules and regulations of the House.

On the budget, it would allow any member to propose amendments on the floor that would reduce the deficit was the way that I heard it. That exposes the Uniparty to not being able to conceal omnibus spending items buried in them and requiring a public vote on them.

My guess is that is the sticking point--the leaderships of both the House and Senate have been concealing these unpopular grifter spending in omnibus bills since GWB and protecting members from actually having to vote on them.

Uniparty cannot have that as greed is the only unity between the parties.

It has become a fight over what the rules will be under a new nominee or McCarthy and assurances of no harm to the 20 for their challenge. So either McCarthy removes all the changes to House rules that made Boehner and Nanzi supreme or he doesn't get the post. Same for other GOPe candidates. The threat to go Dem is rather hollow if not followed by a party switch from GOP to Dem sufficient to sustain rules on debate or even avoid vacate the chair motions.

Hastert, adopted an informal rule that no legislation would come to the House floor without the majority of the GOP party supporting it. He won consistently in House votes with small majority.

>>It doesn't make any difference. IF we did get a strong conservative leader then the eGOP squishes would defect anyway.

It doesn't matter, they will never let anyone not fully on team Uniparty to win, the GOPe would prefer to throw in with the Donks and let Jeffries be SOH than someone not of the body.

325 I think President Trump believed McCarthy was possibly the best Speaker candidate, because all indications (at the time) had McCarthy taking over after the "red wave" that never happened. So Trump placed his bets on McCarthy early on, although it's now clear the conservatives in his caucus lack any faith in him. I agree with their assessment.

326 This infuriates me as the WEF expressed a preference for McCarthy. Makes me doubt Trump.

327 It really does beg the question of how we get red meat conservativism during election season and limp wristed turncoat in leadership. The fact is if we continue to vote for house members who vote for McCarthy or senators who vote for McConnell, we only have ourselves to blame. It's time we primary these bastards.

328 He is dead meat. Even if he wins now, we all lose. He needs to step aside.
