Starting the Year Off With a Bang Video of the Day There's a Taco Bell nearby. I could drive there and back in a day, nearly. Welcome back. That scenery at the end is what I see within five minutes' drive in any direction now. Though in some directions you quickly run out of paved road. A guy's got to do what a guy's got to do ... I have no patience for the burn 'em up, beat 'em up, blow 'em up "science" shows. For example, we have removed almost entirely that positive feedback loop in medicine. It is no longer about delivering the best care as quickly as possible to attract more customers so the doctor can get rich because we have removed a lot of the ability to get rich outside of pharmaceuticals. All you are left with is the social prestige of being a doctor.

Guten abend and morgen as applicable! 2023 is heeeere! Is there a superstition about if you sneeze on the first day of a new year, something weird will happen to you before the last day? Because I just did. (If so, the world must have sneezed collectively on 1/1/2020 and the 2 following New Year's Days.)
I'm up with coffee, planning to go work out in the cool and damp fog. Have to feed the kittens first. Took a walk around, stuck $40 in a slot machine and hit for a few hundred and left, quickly. I don't have the New Years day hangover from yesteryear but the left hip and knee are acting up. Nothing a long hot shower won't cure. All day rain tomorrow, so I think I'll run a couple errands. Just about everything normally open on Sunday is open.

Reminds me of one of Mr. Heinlein's pithy observations:
"Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded -- here and there, now and then -- are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck." Being intelligent is not a felony. But most societies evaluate it as at least a misdemeanor. -Robert A. Heinlein Posted by: Nightfall at January 01, 2023 06:53 AM (xwoai) 106

MALE, Maldives: A gradual rise in average sea level is threatening to completely cover this Indian Ocean nation of 1196 small islands with-in the next 30 years, ac-cording to authorities. The Environmental Affairs Director, Mr Hussein Shihab, said an estimated rise of 20 to 30 centimetres in the next 20 to 40 years could be "catastrophic" for most of the islands, which were no more than a metre above sea level. The United Nations Environment Project was planning a study of the problem. Companies have invested around 10 Billion in hotels and tourism only to have it all go under water! Many of you remember the Inner Harbor as the absolute crown jewel of the renaissance of the Inner Harbor from the 80's. In related EV news...
I saw a blurb about a couple of reporters who took a Rivian pickup camping. They charged the thing just outside whatever camping area they were going to so it had almost a full charge. They camped for 3 days and did not use the EV for anything. Just parked. Off. Not unreasonably cold either, so perhaps this was done last year in the fall or late summer. When they got ready to leave it only had 38 percent of the 90+ percent when parked. They made the uncomfortable comparison to a leaking fuel line or gas tank to the tune of a half gallon every couple of hours. More and more of these revelations are popping up. FJB and his band of incompetents wiped out a third of my wealth last year, tripled my natural gas expenses, wiped out about 20% of my purchasing power, and were busy erecting a police state. And now we have to worry about what the left is going to do to us next.
During last week's freeze, I looked at the SPP's energy contribution by fuel type. Solar was a pixel wide, wind dropped to low teens and coal ran the show in the upper 40 percent (followed by natgas). So which fuel source is most under attack by the ruling junta for 1/1/2023? Taxes on coal are going to go through the roof. Meanwhile, the top three investment houses (eg. Blackrock, State Street, Vanguard) are buying up energy companies and forcing coal plants to shut down in the name of ESG targets. So the government and big business are murdering Americans through energy starvation. Posted by: Reuben Hick at January 01, 2023 08:26 AM (3hSHB) 209

A story published by CNBC claims climate change is damaging Cambodia’s crops by making it hard for Cambodian farmers and fishers to pay back loans they’ve taken out against their assets due to climate change.
Data from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) demonstrate that between 1990 and 2020, production of each of those crops has broken records for yearly production multiple times. The FAO’s data shows, rice production increased by approximately 350 percent since 1990, and cassava production grew by an amazing 12,527 percent. Banana production in Cambodia increased by just under 161 percent since 1990. You must always assume a story by the MSM is WRONG! But Happy New Year! "flatter than you would expect, until it turns vertical". Pixy, you have been very coy about naming 'New Home City'. At first it seemed that it was because you were looking at houses in different places, so that made sense. But not so much now. Clues are, the elevation is near, at or above 1000 metres, ( so no flooding from the rain), that you actually live well above 'downtown' (ref to having to climb 400 (feet or metres) to get to 'new home') and that you can/have to fly there from Sydney, takes an hour. My guess comes down to Orange with Griffith as second choice to most closely meeting those constraints. Any reason why you are still concealing the location? Would love to know if I am on the right track. Curiousity only. Posted by: Dyspeptic Curmudgeon at January 01, 2023 01:27 PM (Kc1Sm) 289
