Since it is Christmas eve I will be kind and not unload on this twerp. You're in Waterloo, Iowa. What did you expect? Samantha Ponder?

I always wonder why TV stations have someone stand outside during a catastrophic weather event to tell viewers how bad it is and why they should not go inside. Finallly someone who got the weather assignment asks the same question

This sports anchor expected to one day be known for something… he would never have imagined it would be for reporting on the weather.

On the bright side he made The ONT.

Unfortunately this game was not under the tree this year. Maybe in years to come.

Fido is OK. The house isn't.

A dog is believed to have caused a fire in a house on Christmas Eve after accidentally turning a hairdryer on.

Essex Fire Service said crews were called to Hockley, Essex, following reports of a smoke-filled house.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire after locating it in the bedroom.

The dog was waiting by the front door when the homeowner returned and both were treated for smoke inhalation, the service said.

This nurse gets it. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Night.

MURRAY — An emergency room nurse at Intermountain Medical Center is using his funky hairdos to make his patients smile.

Nurse Thomas "Zach" Zacharias said when the pandemic first hit, his children looked for a way to pass the time. They decided to shave dad's head into a mohawk and paint it.

"You had the lockdowns, you had patients that were isolated so we wanted to do something fun," Zacharias said. "COVID took away 50% of my ability to express myself [with a mask on] so we went up and we found another 50% we could do something with."

Busted before making The Waffle House. Genius Award Winners.

Initially, the officer pursued the vehicle under suspicion that its occupants may have been involved in criminal activity.

When that officer caught up to the car in a driveway, eight individuals fled the car. All of them were caught and detained.

The teens told police they snuck out of the house and were on their way to Waffle House.

"Unfortunately, they decided to run from the police and were caught, thus placing them on Santa’s last minute naughty list," a spokesperson for the department posted, referring to the incident, on Facebook.

"Parents, please talk to your children as they are off from school for the holidays and ensure they are not out causing problems," the post continued. "If they are, expect to be woken from your sleep by a phone call or knock on the door from officers."

16 Amtrak just cancelled our trip tomorrow. Less than 24 hour notice. So, we either fly to Seattle to be stranded for days (no train seats available for about a week) or we cancel our flight out and rebook to our final destination (also no flights available until Wednesday) and we lose our extra comfort seats (none available for over a week) and easy connections.

Bastards aren't even answering the phone, or refunding the money, yet. By the time I get done with them they will be funding our entire trip. Gratis.

No train trip to reward the boy for a job well done, and now we get to fly all damned night to get there two days late.

I may be a little bit crabby about this.

The other night I was marveling at my heat pump's performance, managing to cycle (reach set point) even when the temp was 10F and below. I wondered if it was just running the strips all the time or something.

Well, I did some research on the modern heat pump control logic, and basically that was indeed what it was doing. The T-stat logic looks at temperature as normal, but looks at rate of change. Once is goes it gets so cold outside, it notices the rate of change of temp decreases when it's on. Let it drop below the strip droop point too many times, and it just goes into a mode where it turns the strips on, and keeps them on until indooor set point is reached.

The idea is it's better to this, and let the system reach set point, rather than sitting there and running the compressor continuously, and just cycling the strips at the droop point.

29 One of the new California laws going into effect January 1st:

No more dancing around compensation questions during job interviews: California now requires most employers to disclose pay scales upfront.

The new law requires all workplaces with 15 or more employees to include a salary range in job postings.

I guess saying that the salary range is from $1/yr to $1,000,000/yr, depending on experience and qualifications, won't be allowed.

And there's this:

In addition, employers with 100 or more workers must submit certain data to the state, including salaries of employees and contractors broken down by gender, race and ethnicity.

Which will be handed to the trial lawyers, whenever they feel like suing an employer for discrimination.

Mrs. Dukes hourly usage date for the past couple of days is available now. Temp here started dropping like a rock early Friday morning, around 4AM or so. Wind picked up and temps dropped rapidly.

There was a bit of inertia with the house, about 5 hour delay. Average power usage was about 2.2kW before that. By about 10AM Friday morning, well power usage doubled to over 5kW by Saturday.

That, in a microcosm, shows you what happened to Mrs. Duke's grid when that artic blast hit. Demand shot the fucking Moon.

They've thought of that - that's why you have to include contractors in your count, in case you thought of getting around the law that way.

Of course, since California is in the process of outlawing contractors, that may not be terribly relevant.

46 I had to adjust a fire claim a week after Christmas in 1992. Apparently the 5 year old grandson of the lady homeowner I was dealing with plugged in a set of the big bulb Christmas lights that had been packed up and ready to be stored the next day. That box caught fire and subsequently caught the surrounding boxes on fire. It destroyed that room and an enjoining room where the lady had all her collectible dolls displayed. She told me she wanted nothing to do with the grandson anymore when I was investigating the cause and she was serious as a heart attack. Not a very nice lady. I always wondered if she ever forgave the kid

Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

VRIGINIA O’HANLON

Virginia, your little friends are wrong.

They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole truth and knowledge.

82 Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there isma veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

83 Once more, Christmas has come and gone, and it's a long haul to St. Patrick's Day, the true beginning of spring. In a way, I like January. No holidays. No frantic shopping. No baking fancy whatevers. Just a nice month to sit down with a stack of books and recuperate from the last couple of months. This is our first winter in a 55+ apartment complex. We don't have to worry about the heater breaking down or the pipes bursting or any of those other annoying but necessary homeowner chores. Just peace and quiet for the next few months.

I hope you all had good Christmases.

Duke did do some rolling blackouts, mainly in Florence county, SC. They did some more in NC, I think. But none here.

They went to a "Stage 2" emergency, and sent out alerts to please, please, lower you T-stats 2F, and don't use any non-essential appliances or other electric loads.

Again, this is the fruits of the Green shit. Shutting down coal plants and the like. In the old days, power companies were run by men, real men, who knew what the fuck they were doing.

A cold weather event like this is forecast, they would've been prepared. They would've had the dirty, low efficiency, but rapid spin-up capable aux generation ready to go to handle the increase demand.

Only problem would've been damage (wind, ice) to the power lines to worry about.

Here's an article explaining why everyone needs to be put on time-of-use electric rates, so they can screw you if you dare to use electricity when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing.

https://tinyurl.com/3a3ncvy2

Which included this:

Utilities are partnering with companies like Opower to provide customers with mobile apps and reports that help them monitor and understand their electricity usage. A typical report may allow a customer to compare her usage over 12 months with her 100 closest neighbors and 20 most energy-efficient neighbors.

We used to receive those nagging reports by mail! Was part of Odumbo's energy failure plan, I think. Never signed up or got an app; the power company just started sending them for a couple of years, then quit.

We were usually in the most efficient group (duh!) because no natural gas, no furnace, and no a/c. Evidently, the pellet stove consumes less electricity than a standard furnace system. Who knew?

204 I have a government Christmas problem.

I have the USPS service that sends you an e-mail showing the covers of your incoming mail, and on the 23rd discovered that I was getting an official letter from the IRS for some unknown reason.

Ice storm on the 23rd and the 24th, so I didn't make it out to the local mailbox pillar (which has mailboxes for about a dozen houses) until today.

No letter from the IRS, but I did get about half-a-dozen letters addressed to my neighbors. Apparently the postman simply gave up on sorting the mail.

Hopefully some friendly neighbor will give me my IRS letter - if I don't get it by Tuesday, I'll shoot an e-mail to my accountant asking what to do (which will also start building a paper trail showing that I didn't get the letter).

Capitalism has a great way to get people to intelligently reduce usage...you make them pay for it.

But we are so far from capitalism now that the Gods of the Copybook Headings will start coming back in all sorts of "unexpected" ways. You mean if you cut supply AND increase the population AND give half the population enough money to pay for electricity not out of their own pocket that...supply won't meet demand? I am...shocked! Way back when debating Obamacare was a thing I pointed out to lefties that if you have the government picking up your healthcare bill that you strongly incentivize them to make that bill as small as possible by getting rid of you.

The response was always something along the lines of "the people in government care unlike people in business!" but of course the bottom line is always the bottom line.

Clinicians want you as if nothing else a return client, whereas the politician wants you dead if you get social security, and could not give less a fuck if you live from denied medical aid.

Period, hell whites if anything have it worse since blacks have a mindless zealous advocacy for care access in the congressional black cacucs whereas whites have socialists who want them to die in greater numbers to remove "disparate outocmes."

Netflix is threatening criminal charges for password sharing in 2023 - next week. I pay for it every month and never watch a damn thing. My wife does watch and we password share with my daughter in another state who occasionally watches. So Netflix allegedly has an option to pay a few dollars more per month to password share. Except they don't. Anywhere on their 'plan options' screen.

Which leaves me with one option, terminate. With extreme prejudice.

410 aflaxtoxin b1 is a potent liver carcinogen produced from aspergillus, a fungal (?) contaminant found on corn, peanuts, tree nuts, and some other stuff. The FDA supposedly does a good job testing for it and controlling exposure in the U.S. (exposure is measured in parts per billion, so you can see how potent it is), but it's not 0.
