Whoa: Investment Giant Vanguard Quits Climate-Focused "Net Zero" ESG Group

Maybe another example of my truism that you can't afford Trumpian Indulgences in a Biden Austerity Economy?

Or is it just that they don't want to be boycotted by Republican governors?

Legal Insurrection:

Vanguard Group, One of 'Big Three' Index Fund Managers, Quits ESG-Oriented 'Net Zero' Group

Vanguard indicated its decision rested in a desire to maintain the freedom not to restrict its investment options.

Posted by Leslie Eastman

How It Started: In October, my colleague Mike LaChance noted Wall Street's enthusiasm for ESG (environmental, social, and governance) investing was already starting to wane.

How It's Going: One of the "Big Three" index fund managers is now quitting an ESG-oriented group.

Vanguard Group Inc. is walking out of the world's largest climate-finance alliance, marking the coalition's biggest defection to date as US Republicans step up their threats against firms deemed hostile toward the fossil-fuel industry.

Vanguard's decision followed a "considerable period of review," according to a company statement Wednesday. Withdrawing from the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative, which is a sub-unit of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, "will help provide the clarity our investors desire" about everything from the role of index funds, to financial risks in the context of climate change, the firm said.

...Vanguard indicated its decision rested in a desire to maintain the freedom not to restrict its investment options.

Initiatives such as the net-zero alliance "can advance constructive dialogue, but sometimes they can also result in confusion about the views of individual investment firms," Vanguard said. "That has been the case in this instance, particularly regarding the applicability of net-zero approaches to the broadly diversified index funds favored by many Vanguard investors."

The "Big Three" (BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street) can cast nearly 25% of the votes in any director election at S&P 500 companies. The departure has significant implications for the American economy.

That article goes on to note that, get this, studies show that funds that prioritize "environmental sustainability" don't necessarily have the greatest economic performance, if you can believe that.

Bad day for ESG:

Vanguard quits net zero banking group GFANZ.

Earlier, @BlackRock was subpoenaed by the state of Texas regarding illegal ESG activity.

via @business

This might not be a total win, but it's still a win, says Townhall's Spencer Brown:

While the decision by Vanguard to untether itself from the net-zero alliance is a win in the anti-ESG fight, MarketWatch noted that the world's second largest asset management firm will still "track its progress" toward reducing emissions "as an effort to provide 'clarity' to its investors."

MarketWatch noted the significance of Vanguard's withdrawal, saying "some environmental groups who follow pledges toward net-zero greenhouse emissions from the lifeblood of the economy -- the financial services and banking sector -- called the exit a major blow to the effort. These groups argued that such a move is kowtowing to 'anti-woke' sentiment," their report added. That is, conservatives just won a major battle in the fight against ESG and the woke left's attempts to force an energy "transition" away from affordable and reliable American fossil fuels.

Again, if the Republicans Part acts like the Stupid Party this is a perfect example. Democrats want to win power. Republicans want pyrrhic victories that look good on TV or online.

52 It seems like Vanguard was only half-hearted with their ESG stuff anyway. They have (or had) at least one ESG fund, as opposed to having ESG suffuse every single thing they did. Low cost index funds still dominate their investor communications. They never seemed to push ESG, compared with Black Rock who can't shut the hell up about it.

But I could be missing something, I only have a very small amount (even smaller now, thanks Brandon!) from a previous employer rolled over to Vanguard and I'm rarely on their site.

83 It was explained to me years ago that index funds were developed because the fund managers that were picking stock were slightly less capable than a dozen chimps throwing darts at a bulletin board, and were being beat by the market every quarter. Picking asset classes, like small-middle-large CAP and specific industry sections is a way to be part of the market and if nothing else, the risk is as broad as the market itself. Index funds also simplified managing and made the fees far lower.

So, going back to hand choosing stocks is dumb.

institutional investors matter to them. Old man Bogle is spinning in his grave.

97 83 It was explained to me years ago that index funds were developed because the fund managers that were picking stock were slightly less capable than a dozen chimps throwing darts at a bulletin board, and were being beat by the market every quarter. Picking asset classes, like small-middle-large CAP and specific industry sections is a way to be part of the market and if nothing else, the risk is as broad as the market itself. Index funds also simplified managing and made the fees far lower.

So, going back to hand choosing stocks is dumb.
Posted by: Kindltot at December 08, 2022 06:44 PM (xhaym)

They on average got beaten by the market net of fees.

Which isn't necessarily the fairest measure since before index funds they were the market, so they couldn't average higher than themselves net of fees.

Since then they have periods of outperformance and underperformance, but there are a lot of jobbers who do closet indexing.

If someone wants to invest in a fund that does stupid things, and the investment objective is stated clearly, then fine, they can throw their money away.

But the idea that trillions are being hijacked to this absurd fake agenda is stunning. Actually adds significantly to the cost and opportunity cost of science-free "environmental" fake religions, which are already an enormous impoverishing factor in the economies of developed countries.

The greenies are losing their minds but the inefficiency of solar is causing the grid to have fits leading to blackouts. $.30 encourages rooftop, $.05 does not.

I think most just believe it would be say a fund that doesn't invest in Exxon. ay worse than that.

When you own a Vanguard fund, Vanguard gets to vote for your shares. So they would put ESG (left-wing) board members to run these companies. The most notable was Exxon got 2 board members that basically is anti-fossil fuel, and Vanguard voted for them to be board members.

The Left could basically control every corporation if they could get the biggest money managers to go along with ESG.

136 Vanguard realizes that their ESG quest largely violates federal laws, state laws and market regulations regarding their fiduciary duty. They have an obligation to put you in what they believe (again, based on a relatively standard set of measures and laws) what the best earning investments for you will be. Only Congress can change those laws and the regulators can do very little to help it along. There is also potential collusion involved with ESG, which is another matter. BTW, this is why Lettuce Brain is trying to issue EO's, because the people around him know Congress would have to change long-standing law essentially saying you have a duty to invest money in the best investments, not money losing schemes like ESG.

Those classes are really worthwhile for the novice. I'm sure that varies from dealership to dealership. I enrolled a gal pal of mine in it and she had a blast. After it was over (two full days on the weekend) she had enough confidence to purchase her own bike and go through the endorsement process.

Not really. Whether they directly manage the fund, or an investor chooses it through their plan, they still have an obligation to comply with the law irrespective of the fund objective. They still have obligations under the 40 Act, IAA, SEA or whatever applies to the investment model.

166 What Red Turban said is what I was getting at above. Of course there can be Dumbass Focus Funds and Make-Believe Science-Free Energy Funds and the like - but turning every fund into some ESG crap, or even letting it affect the fund at all, should not be legal, unless the investment objective lays it all out in advance.

Of course this is part of a nefarious chicken-egg situation now. Most corporations now waste shareholder money and employee money and time and generally impoverish the society with their own idiotic ESG-type crap. So even a fund with an intelligent non-delusional investment thesis will largely only be able to buy stocks of companies that themselves are engaging in this idiocy.

But the institutional shareholder power thing is key. Not sure of the best tools, but this malevolent vandalism via board seats from institutional investors has to be addressed and ended, too.

176 Modern genesis of petroleum is a real possibility in light of fact that many geological processes take MUCH LESS TIME than thought. For example, caves and stalagtites and cave stuff do not take "millions of years" to form. While visiting a popular swimming hole in the Philippines, inquisitive I looked around the very blue water, noticing all of the calcium carbonate formations- karst formations. Branches and twigs were even coated with 'rock' from the calcium carbonate rich water. Yeah, oil is being formed as we speak, and a lot of it just oozes up into the ocean floor.

That's not the same as what is generally meant by a fiduciary. Fiduciaries are required to act in the best interest of a client, which requires having fairly detailed knowledge of the clients. Only some Vanguard advisory services might have that status. In most other cases they are just creating a product and obliged to refrain from self-dealing or embezzling and other obvious crimes.

Vanguard isn't obliged to structure their products to maximize returns or pursue specific risk/reward balances. For the most part the most they'd have to justify is "reasonableness".

Afaik neither Vanguard or Blackrock is crossing the line on making funds not adhere to the description in their prospectus for ESG purposes.

Where it's more likely to sneak in is index construction, from S&P or MSCI. If you're just matching an index that has ESG in it you don't have culpability for it.

183 "All the processes that made oil didn't stop, right? It's not like oil was made one time, and then done. Surely the processes that made it are still constantly happening, so that more is made?"

yes BUT. the process is very slow, and there was no extraction till "recently". There are reports of old fields "regenerating", but is that just slowly refilling from other old (less accessible) oil?

I don't think there is firm proof that all the oil resources regenerate quickly ... BUT we still have a lot of oil we can find, and much of it (off our own coasts, for instance) is restricted from development.

Board of Directors (sweating profusely): "LOSE OUR GOLDEN PARACHUTES!?!?!?!?!?" NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Chairman of the Board: "All in favor of pulling out immediately from all ESG investments, permanently and forever and ever?"
