  • Moon's haunted: After a successful trip to and around the Moon, NASA's Orion spacecraft* has had some issues with ghost breakers. (WCCFTech)

The computerised circuit breakers are supposed to trip on command or when something goes horribly wrong, but instead half of them tripped for no reason at all. And cut off half the maneuvering thrusters in the process, something that could be inconvenient if it happened at the wrong moment.

The next Orion flight is expected in, uh, two years.

    * Not old bang-bang, sadly. See Niven & Pournelle's Footfall if you're not familiar.

  • The making of Dune II. (Read Only Memory)

I always wondered by the sequel to the Dune computer game was in a completely different genre - the first an adventure game, the second a real-time strategy title.

This article explains that: It wasn't a sequel, not even in the strictly temporal sense. Once the producers obtained the rights to make Dune computer games, they hired two studios to produce two entirely different games at the same time.

Dune I was unremarkable and is largely forgotten. Dune II on the other hand pulled together all the elements of a real-time strategy game for the first time, and is the direct parent of the entire Command & Conquer series.

  • You can't let just anybody look at the sky! (Scientific American)

The US government plans to require public release of all date from publicly-funded science. The article argues that this is bad for science, because other scientists can look at the data and, well:
I have a friend in Minsk
Who has a friend in Pinsk
    Whose friend in Omsk
    Has friend in Tomsk
    With friend in Akmolinsk
    His friend in Alexandrovsk
    Has friend in Petropavlovsk
Whose friend somehow is solving now
    The problem in Dnepropetrovsk

And when his work is done
    Haha! Begins the fun
    From Dnepropetrovsk to Petropavlovsk
By way of Iliysk and over Novorossiysk
    To Alexandrovsk to Akmolinsk
    To Tomsk to Omsk
    To Pinsk to Minsk
To me the news will run
Yes, to me the news will run!

And then I write by morning, night
    And afternoon, and pretty soon
My name in Dnepropetrovsk is cursed
When he finds out I published first!
I didn't say it was a very good argument.

  • How "goblin mode" became Oxford's word of the year. (NPR)

    First, that's not a word.

Second, people voted for it. It was an online poll. And it mopped the floor with the competition, because the competition was "metaverse" (which is at least a word) and "#IStandWith".

Third, I wonder if that's in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. I shall take a look, because that just arrived too. (I'd love to get the full 20-volume set, but it's pretty expensive.)

  • Twitter turns its back on open-source development. (ZDNet)

    Is it true?

No. It's just more wishcasting by another left-wing pro-censorship journalist. (Which is pretty much all of them.)

Interesting tidbit from the article though: Twitter was developing its own custom JVM, which is a really dumb idea. The company isn't nearly big enough - let along profitable enough - to support work like that.

  • Setting up container backups on the new server. Much cleaner than the old rsync-and-hope system.

I plan to migrate the old MyISAM tables to either Aria or InnoDB, which will make them crash safe. Not certain that the code will work correctly with InnoDB, because it's properly transactional, but Aria is just a better MyISAM.

Angus & Robertson say they have the full 20-volume OED in stock in Sydney and 40% off. It's still about US$1000, but I am tempted.

4 Morning, all! Up early thanks to the craziness of kittens.

From the ONT: I love dreaming about a nice, large, quality-built kitchen.

My dream is of a large kitchen where I don't have to move items A, B, and C in order to get to D, and then move B so I can reach E. So sick I am of this tiny galley-style kitchen, of living in 2 rooms plus kitchen and bath.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 06, 2022 04:04 AM (KAKDL)

5 Wolfus - the kitchen at my new house has lots of drawers. Lots and lots. Five sets of them, many of them double width.

It's amazing. So much easier to get to stuff.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at December 06, 2022 04:08 AM (BLOW1)

6 I'm also up early because I feel . . . "off." Not sick, not in pain, but not quite myself. Have felt like this since dinner last night. That was nothing odd: a small portion of chicken and sausage gumbo, and a small beef & bean burrito. Maybe it was the vanilla wafers afterward. Weird.

I also may not have made the coffee strong enough. All signs point to Bad Day at Black Rock.

I have money for a down payment on a decent-priced property. The problems are, F. Joe's economy, and that decently-priced non-dump houses in non-dump areas are as scarce here as a kangaroo who does calculus. I want to move away from this pesthole; but, you know, F. Joe's economy. Who knows if I will be able to afford to live if I retire, the way his handlers are mangling America?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 06, 2022 04:12 AM (KAKDL)

34 I used to make extra beer money putting things together for neighbors. It was always nice when they bought actual IKEA stuff, it was good quality. But most times they bought cheap Chinese knockoffs from Amazon. Cheap materials, crappy hardware and lousy manufacturing tolerances that showed in the fit and finish. The instructions were always bad, but you got used to it. Easy money for me from people who had no patience or mechanical ability.

38 Ikea packs things really well, by the way. Amazon tends to just toss expensive stuff into a lightweight box with maybe a bit of packing paper to keep it company, and then deals with the complaints later.

---

I imagine that is the benefit of living in such a progressive ecologically focused country like Australia. You probably have a lot of use of plastics banned. Usually Amazon packaging here isn't packing paper but is plastic airbags.

I live in a crappy state with a crappy governor who cares little about the people (except when she wants money for re-election) Wants the whole state to get rid of fossil fuel, and has no plans on increasing electricity supple. It gets cold in the winter, which isn't what most people want. Southern California has the best weather in the states as long as you don't mind people with shopping carts living on you lawn.

93 Here's what the director of "Cure Violence Macon" has to say:

"crime in Pleasant Hill is a health issue. His team tries to come in, detect the problem, and interrupt it. When we interrupt it, we change the guns, the behaviors, and values in the community or in that area".

Health issue huh? Better hand out some more masks and test kits.

I used to click on some Tik Tok links ( I don't actually have an account )because they were cute animal stories or other human interest, but I don't even do that anymore because it's used as spyware by the evil CCP and has also been a instrument for all this transgender lunacy with young people.

110 I see where the Left has absolutely no interest in the Twitter suppressing stories coverage.

Just imagine if you would, that the highest levels of a world wide church were involved with colluding with Twitter to suppress reports of child sexual abuse within the ranks of church leaders.

I'm not trying to start crap with the church, but focus on how the media and the Left would respond to the Hunter Biden laptop story if the story were slightly different.

I have a less ambitious idea: Birmingham and Huntsville, AL. I liked B'ham when I was there in Sept. '21; the state seemed fairly sane amid the Sniffle Scare; the roads were great; and there was a real pipe shop. I understand there is also a real pipe shop in Huntsville.

Also nice: I can reach B'ham in 6 hours and Huntsville in another 1 or 2 -- a solid day's drive but not too exhausting.
