December Rodeo

A rodeo in December? Why yes! It's the National Finals Rodeo! Today is the last day.

Nat finals rodeo vegas.jpg

I have friends who went to the rodeo one evening while at a work conference. They and their families have some cattle wrangling background, and relatives came in from other parts of Nevada. I don't normally think of Las Vegas as a cowboy town, but there are cattle ranches not all that far away.

*

The other news out of Vegas this week was that Sam Brinton was charged with his second felony for stealing luggage, this time from the Las Vegas airport. It would be beyond crazy if he were at the airport this week because he/they attended the rodeo, while off work awaiting a court date in Minnesota on the 19th, even if he/they could have seen some fine rope work. But I don't think we know the date of the alleged theft at the Vegas airport.

Forbes thinks the most newsworthy thing about the second felony charge against Brinton is that Republicans have jumped on the allegation. This provides the reporter with an opportunity to tell readers that nasty conservatives want to keep little kids from knowing about LGBTQ people and queer identities, and that there have been GOP-funded attack ads against dems for "expanding healthcare access to trans people". (Of course, everyone knows that trans people would have no health care access if the GOP were in charge!).

*

But back to regular rodeo events.

Years ago, I saw a little notice about an upcoming Navajo rodeo at a trading post at the edge of the reservation. Didn't seem like they wanted outside spectators. They were advertising for participants.

In Arizona, Navajo kids sometimes compete bareback in integrated, off-reservation high school rodeos. Sounds like a liability risk to me. Amazing that these rodeos seem to persist!

Shaun-Tu.jpg

Were there rodeos at your high school?

I attended city rodeos in high school, and I remember kids participating, but I don't recall school sponsorship.

Of course, the Indian Nations have also been affected by bureaucracy, and it was anticipated earlier this year that rodeos might be cancelled due to coronavirus. Even in the time of Omicron. Everything's more official now.

22 rodeo terms you should know

  • Bullfighter: After each bull ride, this person distracts the bull so the cowboy can escape the arena safely.
  • Hazer: This is the cowboy that helps keep the steer running straight for the steer wrestler to catch in steer wrestling.
  • Pickup men After each ride, these men will help direct or catch stray stock and lead them to the exit.
  • Hung up: When the cowboy gets caught on one of the bull's horns during bull riding.
  • Riggin': This is a type of suitcase hold, customized to a rider's grip.

Suitcase hold?

More at the link.

How to sound like a pro when you go to a rodeo - rodeo events explained.

Professional rodeo action consists of two types of competitions - roughstock events and timed events.

In the roughstock events: bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, a contestant's score is equally dependent upon their performance and the animal's performance. . .

Complicated business.

DID YOU KNOW:

  • Today's rodeos are an offspring of the early Wild West shows that featured cowboys such as Buffalo Bill Cody.
  • The average bucking horse or bull works less than 5 minutes per year in the arena.
  • The definition of 'rodeo' is a Spanish word meaning roundup.
  • The difference between Spanish rodeo and American rodeo is that the Spanish version focuses on style, while the American version focuses on speed.

The bit about stylish Spanish rodeos (round-ups) does not seem consistent with my image of the Running of the Bulls, somehow.

*

So, what do you think people round up in arenas in France? Words, perhaps? or Reindeer?

Via Jonathan at Chicago Boyz:

E.g it would help America/Britain far more to close 99% of 'conservative' think tank activity in DC/London and put the energy and money into expanding school choice and breaking the state's grip on education by creating new institutions, given how much of politics is downstream of education and how ineffectual most conservative thinking/activity is.

- Dominic Cummings

Case in point:

Kirk Cameron Can't Read His Children's Book To Kids Unless He Dresses Like A Prostitute And Gyrates For Their Singles

The left doesn't care about the law, despite what David French says.

Another case in point:

A poster at Twitter, responding to a CDC survey showing that 45% of high school students were so persistently sad or hopeless that they were unable to engage in regular activities and that almost 1 in 5 had seriously considered suicide. His story:
One of my kids' best friends went to a remote, outward bound style summer camp deep last summer. She came back giddy, and told her mom how amazing it was that the entire time she was there no one talked about climate change or politics or activism or genders. For 2 weeks, they were all allowed to just be kids again. Parents - liberals in particular - think they're churning out little warriors now, but they aren't. They're churning out depressed, confused, terrified, angry, despondent, lost, broken young adults. As someone who has spent a lifetime fighting depression, seeing what we're doing to our kids fucking infuriates me, and the idea that it's perceived by so many as virtuous sends me over the edge. Kids' lives are so wrapped up in the twin harms of the shallowness of social media and the existential dread of things far out of their control that they're breaking apart, and parents are facilitating it.

From David Foster, who also links the Twitter thread.

Yet another case in point. Merry Christmas:

Some Twatter communist was going off the other day about how her kid was having nightmares about climate change.

My take is that she needs to stop fucking her kid's head up with psychological manipulation. Better still, her kid needs to be removed from her custody. It's child abuse, pure and simple.

My wife and I were walking on a trail a couple of days ago. I stared at this cliff next to us and suddenly saw a picture from the early days of the country. The cliff was iron ore. The canal next to us was to carry the ore downstream a couple miles to a steel mill. I could imagine hundreds of workers chipping away at the ore, horses towing the barges down the canal. I could feel the heat at the steel mill as railroad tracks were created. The country was being built by the sweat of an honest days work by a thousand people.

As someone who has spent a lifetime fighting depression, seeing what we're doing to our kids fucking infuriates me, and the idea that it's perceived by so many as virtuous sends me over the edge.

I too have struggled with depression since I was in high school. Puberty hit me hard and I went from a carefree outgoing happy kid to almost overnight turned into a shy, insecure completely lacking in self-confidence or social skills teenager. It felt like what is described in the Garden of Eden story where after they ate the apple, they realized they were naked and immediately felt self-conscious. That's what puberty did to me.

I struggled with it all through high school and college and after a couple of half-hearted attempts to end it all, I finally worked to get myself together. Ironically, IRC online chat in 1995 in college helped me to feel better about myself. Was able to talk to people online and realize people liked who I was. (continued...)

IRC chat helped me to realize that people liked me and who I was, even if they didn't see what I looked like. But at least that helped me to realize that if I could at least get more comfortable with my looks with people, I had a chance people would like me for who I was.

But to the part about "They're churning out depressed, confused, terrified, angry, despondent, lost, broken young adults..."... that describes my falling back into the depressive state I was in as a teenager over the past 20 years of following politics. And it has intensified and gotten worse over the past 2-3 years as the Left has completely exposed itself across the world with the WEF, Deep State and taking control of every institution and corporation in the world. It is absolutely horrifying and depressing and I see nothing but dark times ahead for decades before this can be turned around.

I turn 47 in February and it is downright depressing to realize I will spend the rest of my life alone and dealing with this madness in every aspect of life (including work where we have D.I.E foisted on us as well as "climate change" and "electrification" propaganda).

83 Although I grew up in Texas, we didn't have a rodeo team. The kids who went to my high school mostly lived in town, but since we were on the edge of the city limits, we did have a very large FFA (Future Farmers of America) club made up of kids who lived in surrounding countryside.

Interestingly, one of the handful of black guys at my high school later became a very successful rodeo clown.

That is precisely why the Jan 6th committee postponed their last meeting where they are supposedly going to refer criminal charges to the DOJ multiple times. 89 On a lighter note, regarding rodeos, I remember going to visit my aunt in Arizona back in 1980s as a kid and she took us to a rodeo. I remember being excited to go, but then not liking it, because to me it looked cruel what they were doing to the animals during the parts where they did the wrangling (?) competitions. Where they send an animal out running and then the person would rope it and wrap it up. As a kid, it seemed cruel to me and I didn't understand why they were doing that and it ruined the rodeo experience for me.

Later, as an adult, I would understand more why these things are done, but, as a southside of Chicago city boy, it was all so foreign to me. I learned early on in life that I had no stomach to do the necessary things to raise animals, especially for food. But also learned to appreciate those things were necessary if we wanted to enjoy eating any food which came from the animals.

You're touching on something I was hinting at when I mentioned walking that trail that fueled a steel mill which built the country. In that town the steel mill is now abandoned. The main street tried becoming some kitschy mecca for antiques. That failed. In it's current iteration it's about 90% restaurants.

Those are the jobs for today's youth in that town... the service industry. How utterly depressing it must be to have little or nothing to show for ones labor. No pile of oar, or coal, or stacks of steel waiting to be loaded. Just bringing plates and taking them away.

104 E.g it would help America/Britain far more to close 99% of 'conservative' think tank activity in DC/London and put the energy and money into expanding school choice and breaking the state's grip on education by creating new institutions, given how much of politics is downstream of education and how ineffectual most conservative thinking/activity is.

Considering places like National Review Online have been exposed over the past 6-7 years as liars, frauds and grifters since Donald Trump arrived on the political scene, do there exist any "conservative think tanks" anymore?? Other than maybe Hillsdale College and their Imprimus newsletter, I don't know any actual conservative think tanks or "thinkers/activists" at all.

There are people on Twitter and social media who say the words and grift, but there are no people or any group/think tank who/that actually work to educate people on conservatism and are actively working to spread conservativism in the country like the Left and their (Discover the) Networks do.

I did it, and I know it was like 1/2 speed of the real deal, the horse knew his stuff for sure, and I was terrified. Hats off to y’all who do it!

My other rodeo experience is when I rode said cowboys cutting horse. Now that was so much fun! Again, the horse was clearly telling me to please just stay out of his way, he knew more than me. He was right. I have ridden a few reiners, too. They are fantastic and are so sensitive to cues, it’s a blast.

165 72 So if this is how I feel as an adult going through this from age 25 in 2001 to age 47 in 2023, I can't imagine how depressing it is for children and teens and young adults in their 20s to deal with this as the only things they have ever known in their lives... not having any memories of a time in the 1980s and 1990s when things were much better than now.

169 My first rodeo was around 1960, when I was a little kid.

It was at, get this, Camp Pendleton.

It was great. Many years later, some friends and I went to a rodeo inside the San Diego Sports Arena. Boy did that stink, literally.

A year or two later I went to the rodeo in Lakeside, CA. Ah. Warm summer days. Young women in halter tops and short shorts. Hubba hubba.

170 *Clyde Shelton*, you do know the world will continue on its merry path, either to redemption or total annihilation, whether you are on pins and needles every day following every move of politicians and other assorted miscreants?

I didn't start paying attention to politics until the 1996 election. Prior to that I thought that the entire system was a clowncar/shitshow and just ignored every development. I clearly recall the wailing and gnashing of teeth when the Republicans took the House in 1994. And now look at the libtards - they own it all now.

And someday, maybe not in our lifetimes, the pendulum will swing back at least to center, if not all the way right. Also I'm an observant Catholic and really, my focus is more on staying on God's good side rather than following every moment of what the Insane Clown Posse is creating for our consumption and amusement

The Rodeo Song
[Verse 1]
Well, it's forty below and I don't give a fuck
Got a heater in my truck and I'm off to the rodeo
[Chorus]
(And) It's an allemande left and allemande right
C'mon you fuckin' dummy, get your right step right
Get off stage, you goddamn goof, get off
Piss me off, fucking jerk, get on my nerves
[Verse 2]
Well, here comes Johnny with his pecker in his hand
He's a one-ball man and he's off to the rodeo
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
Well, it's forty below and I ain't got a truck
And I don't give a fuck 'cause I'm off to the rodeo
[Verse 4]
Well, here comes Johnny with his pecker in his hand
He's a one-ball man and he's off to the rodeo

Stimulating various parts of the brain have different results, they have one series of areas to suppress symptoms of depression and it seems to work well, and there is another area that will let you work like a machine in doing hand eye coordination like playing video games, but it does it by suppressing the brain's ability to determine the difference between valid targets and allies, and lets it just target without making those considerations.
It is just a way to suppress function in various areas of the brain.

I think there is something to it, because he specifically includes other groups like Koreans and other east Asian groups. And there is a lot of anger and hate toward Asian groups among many Americans for what they accomplish through hard work, cleverness, and sometimes being a bit hard hearted in their business practices.

Particularly leftist narrative pushers despise them for this accomplishment because it damages their message and it made them come up with the Asian-excluding term "BIPOC".

236 Hung Up?...not on the horns, that is a rarity. Caught in the bull rope is the main risk, dragged around, flung around, stepped on while the safety men and clowns try to get the riders hand free.
I grew up in Texas, had a rodeo arena on campus in highschool, Yuuuuge football stadium of course, no baseball diamonds. FFA was a big deal, nearly half of the students wore blue jackets every day, long hairs could not walk on the FFA side of the quad. I got on a couple of bulls, sign the waiver, pay $15, get tossed off well before the buzzer, bull spins right around and comes back at you(actually trying to get to the exit chute, but YOU think he is gonna kill you)get laughed at by the real bullriders, but have a feather you can wear for the rest of your life that most people don't.(and as a longhair, the FFA guys will then leave you alone, you don't have to fight them all because of your hair, instead, only fight an occasional few of them over a girl, Texas girl's favorite game was "Let's you and him Fight!")

One of the highlights is the Mercury 7 Monument, which is very well done, but inaccessible to the public, except for this race. It is right next to the first bunker used for mission control.

I disagree. American culture is one of hero worship.

If anything, our culture tends to lionize people that are successful.

To solely attribute disdain as jealousy or envy is to ignore any self-examination. Saying "they're just jealous of you, honey" is what you say to an upset child, but it isn't reality.

John Mearsheimer isn't "jealous" when he assesses the Israeli lobbies disproportionate influence on America's foreign policy. He's assessing the the situation from a neutral, rationalist position, and yet many would accuse him of anti-semitism.

Before Ex-Ex and I reunited in 2018, he had moved up to IL from GA two years prior to help the youngest daughter and future son-in-law with the spread they had at the time (about ten acres), in regards to farming.

Youngest had to do it her way, and refused to listen to her dad. He grew up on a farm in south Georgia, whereas she would value the info she'd get on the internet over his insights and knowledge. They didn't farm much of anything, shockingly enough.

Once they moved to MO, same thing, except now they live two and a half hours away, and we're at the point now that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

So when the cops show up (and in Mesa, lots of cops will show up, because they don't have a lot to do) does the incident leader have a few set up a perimeter, and then go to the office and call the room? "Hello, Lt. Swatteam here. We had a report that someone in your room was aiming a rifle."

Of course not. Because, you know, it's entirely legal to have a rifle in a hotel room in Mesa. So instead they approach down a long hallway, and the video shows the rest. Not just the shooter, but the commander was allowed to retire also.

The city knew this was bad, really bad. So they let the county attorney take it to the grand jury, who only saw what the county attorney wanted them to see. Result: no bill. And thus no noisy, ugly trial to make the city look bad.
