The state of California is considering a plan to give $230,000 in slavery reparations to every qualifying black Californian resident. The proposal is being mulled by a reparations task force created by Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom. The task force is looking at handing out some large sums, up to $223,000, to give to each qualifying black American residing in California. Newsom created the nine-person task force in 2020. It was set up as a social justice measure to promote “equity” amid the Black Lives Matter rioting that was seen across the country.
Recycling it makes one feel good, doesn't it? City leaders and residents of Palo Alto, CA find out differently.
Four years ago, city officials in Palo Alto, California, posed what they thought was a straightforward question: Where did their recycling go? Concerned citizens had seen dire headlines about plastic dumping in Southeast Asia, and they wanted to know if their waste contributed. But the city’s investigations have not offered much clarity. Palo Alto’s best reckoning, today, is that about 40% of its recyclable material stays in North America, where it’s supposed to be processed according to strict environmental and labor standards. The other roughly 60% goes abroad, mainly to Asia, with next to no transparency about its fate. Experts say cities and towns across the United States would probably have similar difficulty in determining how much of their recyclables are actually recycled.
Curfews? Well the law abiding won't violate them. But the thugs and animals? Not so much.

The trick that a abolish prisons/abolish police organization in Portland did was explain that crime was only slightly up - using only statewide numbers.
Since Portland is only 15% of the state's population, crime can explode in Portland without affecting the state-wide numbers very much.
It's actually surprising that more crime hasn't spilled over to the burbs - I guess that having functioning DAs and cops in the suburbs makes a difference.

It seems that the newer generation of low flow toilets are also MUCH more effective than the old ones. They also have the added benefit that a clog will not cause the bowl to runneth over because there isn't enough water in the tank to do it.

I read a hilarious article from a writer at the prestigious Carnegie Endowment For International Peace talking about surveying the Russian-speaking population of Eastern and Southern Ukraine.
Before the invasion, "this part of Ukraine had retained generally positive attitudes toward its eastern neighbor: 53% in Ukraine’s east and 45% in the south viewed Russia favorably".
But now, "by May 2022, only 4% in Ukraine’s east and 1% in the south still had a positive view of Russia".
It would be a brave person to express a positive view of Russia to a pollster in Ukraine these days, given that Ukraine is now a functional dictatorship that is raiding Orthodox monasteries, and has arrested many people for "collaboration with the enemy."
No matter how the current war in Ukraine ends, it’s very hard to imagine the re-emergence of pro-Russian political parties. Ukrainian officials have already said repeatedly that they will not allow that to happen.
No kidding.

I installed this one when I finished the basement about fifteen years ago. It was a "Toilet In A Box", the complete package, everything you need, including the honey ring. I don't remember what it cost, not a lot, as I recall. Somewhere I have a spreadsheet with all the material I bought for the basement finish, but I don't feel like looking for it now.

I didn't know that the people of Eastern Ukraine were to be treated as a defeated population.
The mayor of Kharkov, which is predominately Russian speaking, was fined by the Ukrainian government for briefly speaking in Russian during a telethon, asking for funds. It's now illegal to speak Russian on Ukrainian television, even for only a few seconds.

Gas bottle was size & shape of a SCUBA air bottle, but with different threads, of course. 2,200psi. Thing about CNG, is that it's lighter than air. If it leaks, it'll vent out through abovedecks ventilation, cracks & crevices. Propane, being heavier than air, will pool in the bilges, and slowly rise up into the engine compartment or belt-buckle high into the cabin. So when you stroll over to the galley and light up the stove, you get a surprise.
KaBoom. It's not just a breakfast cereal anymore.

And the Garmin made for the RV market is nothing short of a miracle, in terms of passable roads for height/width/length and type of RV. (a 44 ft. Class A diesel pusher is a whole different kettle of fish in the twisties, than a 44 ft. Gooseneck or 5th wheel trailer.)
Yes, I've seen both, locked into full-stop WTF dilemmas, on twisty roads they had no business trying to run in the first place. It's not the drivers I blame, oddly enough. But some RV salespeople need to be dragged off and shot, and the dealerships burned to the ground.

The current Trucker and RV versions though, are stuffed with so much vital info, that they're useful as hell for all that, even if you're not using them for essential navigation.
Example. The "Trucker" one now, knows the routes and "cheats" that get the box backed up to the loading dock, and has each of those individual, numbered loading docks mapped into it's database. It knows the "pull-through" parking or stopping areas, including some data as to Trucker Friendly (or not). They'll steer you right the hell away from any Buc-ee's, for example.

I used to roll 5,000+ mile motorcycle runs, with Rand McNally in the trunk and a 3"x5" index card of written directions for that day's route, handy in the left-side fairing pocket. And that system worked just fine.
GPS is best when you're trying to find Ferd's Feed & Seed in Bugtussle, TX, and the last map they printed of THERE was in 1981.

Pueblo is a nightmare. Don't try to buy gas there. The last time I stopped there to do that half of the pump card readers weren't working and the clerks basically told me to piss off when I tried to pre-pay inside. They sell an entire kit for that, just make sure you get the right seal between the tank and the pedestal/bowl.
Swearing is allowed by the way, there is no easy way to get the screws out and replaced unless you dismount the whole thing and do the repairs outdoors in the light.
Which means you need a new wax seal when you remount the toilet to the sewer. You might need one anyways. Use a scrape from the old seal to help hold the new seal in place while you reset the toilet otherwise it falls out every damned time and if you pinch it you need another new one.
Stuff a wad of newspaper down the hole to keep from dropping stuff down the sewer. Remember to remove it before resetting the toilet.
Don't over tighten the bolts.

Back when I worked in the oilfield, a drilling consultant gave me a book called, simply, The Map Book. It is an 8 1/2 by 11 spiral-bound book of maps of Alberta, county by county, showing all the local roads, and if they are full-service or seasonal roads. Normally we were given very good driving directions to get to location, but the map book was useful for taking shortcuts, or for showing us why certain shortcuts might be unwise. I remember one well I was on, we were told, "under no circumstances use Highway such and such when coming and going from the rig". Because mad bomber Wiebo Ludwig's home compound was right on that highway, a few scant miles from where we were set up. Rig had 24/7 guards on patrol, too.

He's dead now. I don't know if his family still runs the "compound" (basically a hobby farm) now, or if it even still exists. He was a religious nut case, and a bad farmer. His sheep died, because the Lord did not provide enough fodder for them to graze on, but he claimed they were poisoned by gases from nearby wells, and blew up a couple of pipelines. And then, one summer night, a pickup load of young people from a nearby town drove through his yard and commenced turning donuts in the dirt. A shot rang out, and a 17 year old girl passenger in the pickup died of a gunshot wound to the head. RCMP searched his place high and low, never found a gun, and nobody was charged.

I have a photo of my dad and his younger brother, probably right around 1935, outside the barn, messing with some piece of old farm equipment, and dad is pondering his next engineering feat while Dan is jawing at the camera. Captures both of them perfectly.
Neither one was a prince, but they did have their predilections.
