Woke Leftwing Financial Titan BlackRock "Begs" Texas to Remove It From the List of Companies that Boycott the Energy Industry

blackrockdemands.jpg

BlackRock is a Clinton and Obama connected super-firm that has pioneered "Environmental Social Governance" -- ESG -- investing, which means investing where you don't worry about profit so much as leftwing political objectives.

They are the worst of bad actors and ESG is being used to redirect the full might of corporate power to the aims of the socialist left. If the Republican Party were anything other than a plutocrat services concierge they would roll back the Obama rules allowing companies to invest other people's money in companies where politics, not profit, is prioritized.

But they won't, because too many of their rich patrons are now invested in ESG.

Texas pushed back against them, putting them on a list of companies that boycott traditional energy companies and thus making them ineligible to receive money from Texas state funds, and now they're demanding to be taken off the list.

They claim they don't boycott energy firms -- of course, they mean they invest in wind and solar and other non-energy-producing "energy" ventures.

BlackRock Inc. and UBS Group AG are among major financial firms taking steps to be removed from a list of companies that Texas has classified as "boycotting" the fossil fuel industry.

Representatives from at least five companies have asked the office of state Comptroller Glenn Hegar to remove them from the divestment list he published in August, arguing that they shouldn't have been included to begin with, according to documents Bloomberg obtained through a public records request.

The efforts underscore how crucial Texas' booming economy and population are as a source of growth for the finance world. Firms on the Republican comptroller's list may struggle to win underwriting business from the state's myriad issuers of municipal debt or gain access to entities like the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

"We believe your determination is incorrect and is contradicted by verifiable public information," BlackRock Head of External Affairs Dalia Blass and Chief Client Officer Mark McCombe wrote in an Oct. 3 letter to Hegar. "BlackRock does not boycott energy companies" under the relevant state code.

As mandated by a law that the Texas Republican-controlled legislature passed last year and that took effect in September 2021, Hegar's office released a divestment list of 10 companies in late August -- including UBS and BlackRock -- as well as more than 300 individual funds.

Hegar's task was to prepare a list of firms that his office deems "boycott energy companies" -- a pillar of the state's economy -- under the Texas law. The entities then risk losing access to business with certain state governments and organizations.
...

Meanwhile, Tom Naratil, co-president of UBS Global Wealth Management until last month, submitted a clarification letter regarding the list in September. A UBS spokesperson told Bloomberg in October that the firm met with the comptroller's office and reiterated the importance of the energy industry and Texas. UBS said last month that it provided more information showing, "it is both our policy and practice to do business with energy companies, including those in the fossil fuel industry."
UBS Group's arm that underwrites US municipal bond sales hasn't handled any offerings in Texas' lucrative market for state and local-government debt since Hegar announced his findings, and was removed from a $3.4 billion transaction slated to price next year.

"We are actively working with the authorities in Texas to reinforce the importance of the energy industry and Texas to our business," Erica Chase, a UBS spokesperson, said in a statement. "UBS does not boycott the energy industry."

BlackRock didn't respond to requests for comment on the correspondence with Hegar's office.

More of this, please.

96 > I would prefer to see the rule expanded to "Investment Companies Which Take Into Consideration ANYTHING Other Than Making The Highest Return Possible For Their Clients".

Eh, this is tricky. Of course people want as much money as possible, but it's not that simple. You can't guarantee all investments will do well. So you try to do your best while mitigating risk. Different clients are going to have different levels of acceptable risk. So you try to match investments to what level of risk they accept.

By the rule you propose, a finance guy who has put together a moderate risk portfolio for a client isn't doing all they can to make as much money as possible for their client.

127 "We believe your determination is incorrect and is contradicted by verifiable public information," BlackRock Head of External Affairs Dalia Blass and Chief Client Officer Mark McCombe wrote in an Oct. 3 letter to Hegar. "BlackRock does not boycott energy companies" under the relevant state code....

"We are actively working with the authorities in Texas to reinforce the importance of the energy industry and Texas to our business," Erica Chase, a UBS spokesperson, said in a statement. "UBS does not boycott the energy industry."

++++
This is the same weasel wording from both companies. They don't boycott "energy companies," they boycott *effective* energy. UBS might be willing to underwrite for a Dread Carbon Energy company, but they aren't directing any investment banking activity that way, and will punish those same firms by pulling investments in the name of ESG. They all do it.

More important, they all say it's the most profitable thing EVAR. Only a fool *wouldn't* do it. No portfolio that is non-woke will do as well one that is woke. These people should be *thanking* Texas for making it impossible for them to engage in lower-value business.

ZIRP makes the entire scheme work. They buy properties at next to nothing in terms of financing, do it on shorter terms, and roll the bonds over at every maturity. There is no way their absurd scheme and absurd over-payment (and they do - they can't buy whole tracts out of subdivisions without paying a premium) can work in a rising-interest environment. 200 BlackRock owns some Dread Carbon Energy positions. It even has an oil and gas lease management division.

It also pushes hard - in every other area - to starve and destroy any non-woke enterprise of capital, bullies governments into doing the same (this is the *really* pernicious part of it), colludes with other financiers to push it even harder I'm looking at you, Vanguard) and so on. They are pushing it hard and BlackRock's portfolio has decreasing amounts of non-woke shit it in every quarter.

BlackRock is a bad actor that is seeking to destroy the energy business and isn't afraid to throw its significant weight around to do it. That they have some holdings in oil and gas is irrelevant. Nobody expects a tyrannical bastard to not also be a hypocrite. That they have some holdings has no meaning, because the corporate mission is to destroy the entire industry.

There is one halfway-decent reason that Wall Street could shy away from the Oil Patch. Investors have gotten killed with the booms and busts of the industry over the years. Posted by: It's me donna

Not really, I've read the thread after Ace put it in the sidebar and basically CT is arguing that Harmeet did a shitty job in AZ such as not filing required affidavits in AZ law to allow voters in Maricopa County extended polling hours. Plus, CT also correctly notes that Harmeet is both a GOP RNC committee member plus a contractor being paid by Ronna for lawyer duties. CT argues that is a conflict of interest because Ronna is up for reelection as RNC chair. Plus, Ronna's goal is to end MAGA challenges to the GOPe so sending Harmeet to GA after her fiasco in AZ as the RNC's chosen attorney of record is tantamount to sabotage.

Then you have the ridiculous post mortem RNC committee where people like Henry Barbour who prevented Cheney and Kinzinger from being rebuked by the MS GOP committee as a key member.

Basically, CT is saying about Harmeet, you cannot serve two masters--GOPe and MAGA are diametrically opposed.

Read the chain for yourself and figure out where you stand.

323 Having my version of snowgedon here. Not of Buffalo proportions but still epic for November 30th. Started snowing at 10 last night and it hasn't stopped . I am at 16 inches on my deck. Plowed for two and a half hours this morning. I am thawed and fed so back our for round two.

We planesed, trainsed, and automobilesed back from vacation and got stuck in a plane that they couldn't get the second engine started due to lack of onboard air pressure, had to pull back in to use ground air, waited 3 hours on the plane to get clearance, while the snow piled up on the wings, then had to taxi to de-ice, then finally arrived to 6-8 inches on the roads, and arrived from the airport 2 hours later at 5 am this morning, to 12 inches or more of snow we still have not finished shoveling.

True, Governor Abbott signed the law, but he didn't pass it and he has nothing to do with implementing it. Signing it was his only involvement. There may be credit due to Dan Patrick, the Lieutenant Governor. In Texas, nothing gets through the State Senate unless the Lieutenant Governor makes it one of his priorities.

Yeah, I mean I don't sue, but the entire premise is a basis for a malpractice case. The idea behind run death is near is to stop replication. THe virus has already maxed out replication by the time you have gotten sick enough for the protocol to allow you to get it. AND, at that point you are only assuming the risk of the side effects. And there is no way they told you BTW its too late for this drug to have the effect it was designed to have, and you'll have a really good chance of it making his sick and killing him outright - do you want to give it a whirl?

346 You're going love this logic by the liberal wing on SCOTUS regarding whether States have standing regarding immigration policy:

SCOTUSBLOG
"Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson suggested that any harm that the states suffered was the result of decisions they made, rather than the policy itself. If the federal government has decided not to detain some noncitizens with a criminal history because it doesn’t believe that they are a risk, she said, but Texas nonetheless opts to detain them, Texas has chosen to incur a self-inflicted injury."

357 Saw Fleetwood Mac on their reunion tour a couple of years ago during one of the maybe 10 shows that they were all together. A couple of comments pertinet to this thread:

1. The other band members bent over backwards kissing Christine McVie's butt through the whole concert, telling her how wonderful she was and how nice it was to have her. I gather she was a reluctant participant.

2. During the concert, almost everyone got to take a break at some point because they weren't in the song, except Lindsay Buckingham. He played guitar for 3 hours solid without a break.

3. Houston was the second stop that they were all together. They didn't want to leave the stage. They kept doing encores and I believe taking requests yelled at them. They would have kept going for a couple of hours more but eventually I think the promoters started nudging them to shut it down.

Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable a Clear and Present Danger at November 30, 2022 02:44 PM (u4CEu)

A fiduciary only has a responsibility to do what is in the client's "best interest." First and foremost, that means their primary responsibility is to make sure they don't lose your ass for ya by proxy. It also means they don't have a specific responsibility to achieve any returns, let alone maximum returns.

Such being the case, as ESG investing is a dead meat out of the gate money loser, investing client funds as a fiduciary into ESG investment products simply because they are ESG is likely a violation of their fiduciary duty and would probably be a slam dunk class action when the time comes.
