The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The FBI’s processes and procedures have proven to be partisan-driven and untrustworthy in recent years. This is the latest example of systematic corruption happening at the highest levels of the FBI, and the American people deserve full transparency.” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH)

What we deserve and what we will get are two different things I'm afraid Congressman.

Quote II

"It takes hundreds of thousands of dollars [to run for office]," Maloney said in the email. "And now, I learned firsthand why it's tough for regular people to run for office." Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, (D-NY)

Really Congressman?

*

Quote III

“It tells me all I need to know. And that is, just because it’s legal does not make it the right thing. I tell people all the time, the institution of slavery was legal, but it was not right. Just because they purchased these weapons legally does not mean that’s what the law ought to be.” Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC)

Jeez Congressman, the same thing could have been said about Roe vs. Wade

*

Quote IV

“I’m thrilled to see this step forward. It’s long past time for us to protect the blood supply based off what people do and not who people are.” North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley

By all means Kody, you first.

I guess I'm aging. And Keith Richards isn't. RIP Christine McVie, age 79.

The musician, best known for songs including Dreams, Everywhere, Don’t Stop and Little Lies, died peacefully in hospital, following a short illness.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement, which read: ‘It is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death.

‘She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family.

Not content to let their "Helicopter parents" wash their clothing. The Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter at the University of Cincinnati (UC) want free laundry. When everything is free, nothing will be free.

Students demand univeristy provide free laundry
An announcement about the effort was made to their instagram page that said 'Free Laundry is a right that all students have. And we’re trying to secure it for students at UC.'
The cost of laundry, according to the University website, is $1.75 for a wash and $1.50 per dry. However, for students with a Bearcat Card, those prices are discounted to $1.50 and $1.10.

The projected date of actual deployment isn’t too far off, either. Embark said it intends to commence commercial operations in 2024. But will it survive 2022 let alone 2023?

Out of all the beaten-down public companies in the autonomous driving space, Embark Technology stands out as a conspicuously terrible stock market performer.

The San Francisco-headquartered company, which develops autonomous driving technology for the trucking industry, has presided over a roughly 98% share price decline since going public a year ago. In the process, it’s wiped out close to $5 billion in market capitalization.

Today, Embark and a few others that carried out SPAC mergers are in that weird category of companies trading below the value of cash reserves. In Embark’s case, the company’s recent market capitalization of $110 million is actually quite a bit lower than the $191 million cash it had at the end of Q3. In other words, investors seem to think it’s worth less than nothing.

The Democrats keep going down the Progressive Road. Not a surprise.

Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York was elected the next Democratic House leader on Wednesday, making history as the first black lawmaker to lead a political party's caucus.

In France, you can be boring.

A French court recently ruled that a man fired from a consulting firm for not being fun enough at the workplace has the right to be as boring as he likes.

In 2015, Cubik Partners, a French management consultancy based in Paris, fired Mr. T, whose full name was not disclosed for privacy reasons, arguing that he was difficult to work with, a poor listener, and simply boring. What the company apparently meant, however, was that Mr. T didn’t go out with his colleagues enough after work, as part of the company’s “fun-based” approach to team building. The employee, on the other hand, clarified that he simply refused to forcibly partake in various excesses, such as consuming large quantities of alcohol and even sharing a bed with colleagues afterward.

And our dearly departed Frank Zappa sings about France.............

Just a tune up folks for December.........

Donation Dollars or Bribery? You be the judge.

The financing of election campaigns, and their results, have been increasingly dominated by a small number of wealthy donors. But a newly approved ballot measure in Oakland is likely to give everyday people more of a voice in future elections, judging from results in the only other U.S. city with such a law.

Measure W, supported by nearly 74% of Oakland voters on Nov. 8, requires the city to send four $25 vouchers every two years to each resident 18 and over, including non-U.S. citizens with legal permanent residency, to donate to one or more candidates for mayor, City Council or the school board. The candidates would have to abide by spending limits. The money, about $4 million per election, will come from the city’s general fund, which currently pays for a little-used program of limited public funding for local candidates.

Proponents call the vouchers Democracy Dollars. Oakland is the second U.S. city to enact such a program; the first, Seattle, implemented it in 2017, two years after voter approval, and has reported substantial changes in its elections, with more public involvement.

You and I know this. Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy don't give a flying fvck. Elon Musk says Twitter interfered with elections.

Elon Musk said Wednesday that under prior ownership, Twitter “failed trust & safety” of its users and “interfered in elections” in a post on the site.

“The obvious reality, as long-time users know, is that Twitter has failed in trust & safety for a very long time and has interfered in elections,” Musk tweeted in response to a comment on a Reuters article. “Twitter 2.0 will be far more effective, transparent and even-handed.” (RELATED: Fox Guest Claims The Left Hates Musk For Making Censorship Against Conservatives ‘Difficult’

Yael Roth, who resigned as Twitter head of safety Nov. 10, said during an interview at a Tuesday Knight Foundation event that the social media site was less safe since Musk took over the site, Reuters reported.

Just a tad too much eggnog that evening. Genius Award Winner.

A Victoria police officer was injured while trying to arrest a man at the Santa Claus parade Saturday, according to the department.

Authorities say officers were marching in the Peninsula Co-op Santa Claus Parade and handing out candy canes when they were alerted to a disturbance.

"A parade spectator approached members of the VicPD contingent to report that a man had assaulted a member of the crowd and was walking through the crowd trying to instigate additional fights," a statement from the department said.

Speaking of too much eggnog........ A second set of Genius Award Winners.

CONCORD, N.H. —
Two Massachusetts men are accused of driving while intoxicated after they were each clocked going 100-plus miles per hour on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire, according to authorities.

New Hampshire State Police officials said a trooper who was monitoring traffic on I-93 in Bow saw a vehicle approaching his location at a very high rate of speed at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday.

The trooper obtained a radar reading of 120 mph as the vehicle approached and passed him. The trooper then stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as 25-year-old Jacob Hulsoor, of Boston's Dorchester neighborhood

It really is a life. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

The delivery of medication via the umbilical vein to a baby in utero with a rare genetic condition was proven to be a success in preventing the infant’s death.

It’s the first time in history Pompe disease has been treated in utero, and could represent a life-saving new standard of care that’s safe and effective for both mother and infant.

In Canada, the parents of 16-month-old Ayla were relieved when she was born as expected, with no signs of the disease that can cause lethal heart complications. Pompe affects fewer than 1 in 100,000 infants, but this inherited condition arising from a defective gene copy is often fatal.

Portland has a variant where you can donate up to $25 to people running for municipal office, and the city will match that **seven times**, so the city will send $175 more to the candidate.

When he hit the floor with the back of his head, and it sounded just like thumping a melon.

Oh, and that last breath thing you see in the movies...it's real.

So, obviously the idea that it's a right is risible. What I can't figure out is if a college is charging the price of a minivan in annual tuition and room and board, why they can't include ticky-tack stuff like laundry and meals.

$2 every week or two for laundry isn't even a rounding error.

1) Democrats have endlessly deep pockets. Zeldin and others this cycle proved that you can't win on a good message alone. It's sad but it's true.
2) No one except one of the oligarchs has the money to self finance. Trump is that one in a million big money guy who opposes the rest - but there won't be another like him.
3) if you take the position that only self financing candidates should run, then you've already accepted that we will be ruled directly by the oligarchs forever. And if that's true, then why bother worrying about any of this? The game is already over.

I made my daughter do her own laundry in high school because if an item of clothing touched her body for more than twenty seconds, it went into the laundry basket. When we dropped her off at college the first time, we gave her a roll of quarters and a box of detergent. Three and a half weeks later, she staggered home with two duffel bags stuffed full of dirty clothes. Damned if she was going to waste those quarters on laundry. A shot of Febreeze and maybe wearing a pair of jeans for three days instead of half a day, but those quarters were staying in her pocket. She'd spend Sunday afternoon washing clothes while I screamed she was going to miss her ride back to college. At least it was only once a month.

Our vintage Nissan Quest has had the "Service Engine Soon" light on for, well, years. The only actual problem seemed to be… that the Service light was always on.

Fortunately, we weren't stuck with no warning lights. That would be too weird. Lately, the big red "Brake" light is on almost all the time. Something new to ignore.

The US is the worst for "transparency". All of what was learned earlier on came from data from foreign countries, like the UK, Israel, and others.

Sandler damn near always was sure to include a message of a very positive humanity, often as a morality tale, into his very silly films. Carry? Even when he tried, it always came off as cynical, and faked.

Sandler's "The Waterboy" is over the top goofiness, but with a heart tugging tale at it's core. Carry, nope. And, Farrel? Damn near human debris, that one. It's "cringe" just watching him debase himself, his characters and his cast, film after film after film. Sad.

Myers can deliver a good tale, but is very inconsistent. I think he was at his best in Wyane & Garth roles. 'Cause he was havin' his most fun, and that made it fun out in the seats.

406 A good silly comedy is probably the hardest kind of movie to make and novel to write.

Carrey, Sandler, Myers all made some great ones . And Farrell when he could get out of his own way did too.

But, silly is tough and they couldn't do it forever.

410 naturalfake. Difference being, Sandler was the most consistent in "getting it right" By far.

Not included in anyone's lists tonight, was Ben Stiller. Also, inconsistent. But great, when he got it right, too.

Biggest difference? Stiller had some acting chops, though seldom used and less often seen. Given his age now though, I think he could carry some serious roles, quite well. Sandler might be able to, he has before. Carry has done one (forgot the name, but he's the "subject" in a fake TV world). Myers can be serious, but does he HAVE the acting chops to put it on screen?

415 Jim,

Yeah Stiller could be great.

If you've never seen it, check out "Envy" with him and Jack Black.

Those acting chops of his are what really makes this whacked out movie work.

416 naturalfake.

Been a Long Time since I watched "Envy". It's on the list now, yeah.

Being the son of Steller and Mera, he was purebred Hollywood, when Hollywood *meant* something. I think he's forgotten more about acting and stardom, than most will ever know.

He needs to go for the serious roles. There's an Oscar in it for him, if he does.

418 What the hell is the big thing about "one hundred miles an hour!"?

I cracked the ton regularly when passing 18 wheelers on 2 lane roads. With any modern bike (Hardly Abelsons excepted, of course ;-) ) coming up on a big truck at 60, drop a gear, open it up, and you'll be over 100 by the time you clear the front bumper.

That's been true for at least the last 35 years. You'd figure that "journalists " would tone down the breathless prose by now.

421 Well, buddaha, given that a GL-1500a would do about 110 totally uncorked, it took a bit longer than till the front bumper to get there.

But 60 to 85/90 by then? Yeah, no sweat.

Thing about the Gold Wing, was that the "top speed in gear ratio" was about 137. But it lacked the raw H.P. to push past the aerodynamic wall of the fairing, windshield, bags and upright riding position. Fastest ever legit recorded was 105 on the B'vll Salt Flats, but rear tire slippage was pronounced.

Know what? 105 is PLENTY FAST on a 'Wing, for me!

429 I had a doctor's appointment today, I was so pissed that I forgot one of the three words they told me to remember for my cognitive test. They gave me the three words to remember and immediately asked me to draw a clock with the hands showing 10:45. I did a magnificent job on the clock, quite intricate, and of course the time was spot on, in the process however, I lost the third word, which was chair. I should have employed a mnemonic device like Cher, to remember chair. Don't sweat forgetting a couple of things here and there, not that I'm an example or anything.

Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at December 01, 2022 02:53 AM (a4EWo)

430 I don't think I've had a cognitive test for a while, but I'm glad you did well on the clock 🙂. That I could do, but I couldn't recall Harrison Fords name today, I asked FenSpous and then three hours later had to ask him again. Harrison Ford and I are having a big romance. That why it's not good that I have to ask FenSpiuse his name.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 01, 2022 02:58 AM (R92kx)

431 Fen, Just think Edsel and you will remember FORD, Harrison Ford in your case. I liked Harrison Ford very much in Witness, otherwise not a huge fan, although I do watch Air Force One when I am just surfing the channels.

448 Looks like I missed out on a good discussion of movie comic actors. Sandler once annoyed me, but then I saw him in Just Go With It, the remake of Cactus Flower from the '60s. It's a farce, but a well-constructed one, and Sandler serves the material instead of making it all about him. (Plus any movie with Nicole Kidman and Jen Aniston doing a hula dance contest is worth seeing a few times.)

Jim Carrey could do drama as well as comedy; but most of his work I've seen has that problem, that he is making the material all about him. Ben Stiller is much better in the things I've seen. His role in the remake of Neil Simon's The Heartbreak Kid was well done.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 01, 2022 04:05 AM (KAKDL)

449 From earlier: "Lager" means to store, in German. While it is true that Lager yeasts tend to flocculate or aggregate towards the bottom, that's a feature, not a bug. The yeast strains were selected for, because of the long term storage.

Thus you can "Lager" any beer (cold storage), as it were, and many if not most beers with live yeast most definitely improve in cold storage. The flavors improve, the "green" taste goes away. The little yeasties continue to clean up and digest the more complex sugars for months.
