The GOP Changes Candidates and Changes Strategies, But One Part of Its Failing Formula Never Changes: The Political Consultant Class That Profits Off Endless Losses

Victoria Marshall at The Federalist.

I'll say this about the Democrats: They would never put up with a cadre of failures like this.

For years, millions of dollars in grassroots donations have gone to prop up GOP candidates, only to end up in the pockets of the political consultant class. Back during the 2012 presidential election, 10 of the consulting firms behind the effort to get Mitt Romney to the White House grossed a combined $1 billion in the process. In the 2014 election cycle, the same consultants reaped more than $19.6 billion.

"Big money campaign consultants on the GOP side are in the business of losing," former Kansas Congressman Tim Huelskamp told The Federalist. "Investing in the ground game makes campaign consultants almost no money -- arguably it costs them money. On the other hand, hundreds of millions of ads put 10-15 percent of that total in hand of the media buyers/consultants -- and upwards of 30-50 percent of campaign mailers typically are profit."

In the 2020 election cycle, for example, four Republican House candidates in dead-end campaigns raised over $42 million combined but drew less than 30 percent of the vote in each of their races. A lot of that money went to pay consultants.

...

"When the incentive is on the money-making, it's time for Republicans to reexamine this consultant class establishment that's been running Republican Party politics," Huelskamp said.

Axiom, one of the top GOP consulting firms, grossed nearly $50 million this past federal election cycle -- despite having a success rate of only 55 percent in both the primaries and the general -- per the FEC.

In just one example, in Arizona's Republican primary for U.S. Senate, Blake Masters defeated Jim Lamon by a resounding 12 points -- after Lamon spent $13,829,274 on Axiom.

On the local level, Republican Lauren Davis ran for county judge in Dallas County, Texas. After spending more than $1 million -- roughly $600,000 of which went to Axiom -- she lost by 25 points.

Such bleak numbers are simply ignored by the political consulting class, which functions as a revolving door between congressional staff, GOP leadership PACs, and media consultants. Any Republican seeking higher office is immediately told which consulting firms and strategists he should hire within the GOP's insider network.

My dear departed friend Michael Flynn told me about this scam. If you run for office, you have to use the GOP insider network. You're forced to. Coerced to.

Because if you don't, the GOP insiders will tell other insiders to tell their donors not to donate to you and other vendors not to provide services to you. They'll starve you for money and make sure you lose -- unless you hire one of the incompetents from this guild, which ruthlessly enforces its right to do all political work for all GOP candidates.

And of course they all do this to make sure they all protect each other's phony-baloney jobs.

They make sure no one can enter this field, except through the guild system, which involves first being a useless office-worker hack in the GOP party structure. After you do your time as a useless GOP functionary, you get out and go into the field to make your real money as a consultant.

This is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And because it is the pot at the end of the rainbow, all of the people who have gone through the guild accreditation system are very, very insistent that no outsiders are permitted to work in this area, except other Certified Guild Incompetents.

If you haven't spent years learning to repeat "Diversity is our strength" and "Jobs Americans won't do" and "What's good for foreign investors is what's good for America" on command as a GOP party staffer, then you're just not allowed to be GOP political consultant.

And obviously, this system only accepts very liberal effete urban RINO cvcks, who vote Democrat whenever no one's looking.

I mean, half of the former permanent GOP political consultant class is on Twitter right now yelling "Vote Blue No Matter Who."

Back in 2013, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh characterized the GOP consultant class as a "very close-knit, closed group" who are "making filthy amounts of money -- $150 million a campaign -- whether the candidate wins or loses." And "they're all moderates. None of them are really conservative."

I think Rush was too charitable.

29 I'm wondering how many of the "outsider" candidates used these networks. Did Masters switch for the general? Guessing he didn't and that's why his donations were either small donors, or a handful of huge ones. Same with Vance, he seems like he wouldn't use that old network of RINOs.

If these guys could succeed without these consultants (and Masters did succeed in my eyes, and only fell short not because of the money itself, but because the act of pulling the money was Ms. Lindsey's nod to McCain Republicans to vote for Kelly) hopefully they can start pushing them out for advisors who actually have Republican principals, not just craving power.

33 As far as cons go, the con is in telling voters that the other side will do X so vote for us, when in reality the two parties have divided up the forever issues that appeal to their bases.
Overturning Roe throws a wrench into that, but it won't be long before the uniparty picks another issue they figure won't ever be resolved and whips up the base of each party against the other.

Btw, all this cash they grift has to come from someplace. Let it not be from you.

34 I would argue that they are democrats and are, in their minds, working from within the system to ensure the left stays in power no matter what and are taking money from right wing rubes that otherwise would have been spent effectively to elect conservatives. Win/win.

101 My dear departed friend Michael Flynn told me about this scam.

And this is one of the big reasons why Don Bolduc - NH running against Maggie Hassan - lost.

This will change (and is changing, slowly) when candidates stop being afraid of establishment threats and are sincere in fighting for and therefore trusting the people over the consultants. 119 It occurs to me that a corrupted political consultant class would have a lot of opportunity to gather opposition research from the inside.

Besides simply being able to observe everything about you from up close, I imagine it's fairly standard practice for some high up consultant to take the candidate aside and say something like, "Listen, we are spending a lot of time and money on you. I need to know there are no surprises in your past that are going to destroy your campaign and put us all out of work. If there is anything, we can deal with it. I just need to know so we have a plan if things crop up."

At which point the politician quietly spills some dirt. Maybe not their deepest, darkest secrets, but something.

The funny thing about truly random distributions, or as close as humans can get to truly random, is there will be clusters. If you hand a human a bunch of numbered balls and ask them to make a random series, they will likely try to evenly distribute the results so it looks "random."

It's entirely possible to get a 23, 24, 25 in a nearly random draw. It's not likely, but it's possible. It's just as possible you'll get a 37, 2, 45.

Posted by: bonhomme at November 23, 2022 03:53 PM (eyxn4)

Moderate = sucks commie dick, or
Moderate = Cuckhold who gets off on humiliation.

Just a suggestion.

Yes. I prefer just shaking it to give a nice little froth on top. Ignore all the stirring fetishists on this site who recoil with horror at the thought of shaking a Manhattan. They need therapy. The froth adds a little flavor and more mouthfeel, as well as looking prettier. Shaking makes it a better drink. Go to any high end bar with experienced bartenders and order a Manhattan. They will shake it unless you say otherwise.

Wait, what? Every manager I've ever known who had a corporate credit card was very careful about only using that card for business purposes. The ones who weren't careful got an earful and either shaped up or got fired fast.

If these people think they have the right to use a corpo card after being fired, they were definitely using it for personal purposes before.

There is none so blind as those who will not see! First, a good manhattan is made with rye, not bourbon. The bourbon and sweet vermouth makes the drink too sweet. Second, there is no such thing as "bruising" alcohol; just do a better job of managing ice-to-booze ratio. Whatever the "froth" is, it adds texture to the drink -- which is part of the reason for making a cocktail. If I wanted just "regular" booze I would drink the whiskey straight.

Correct, other than the fact that bourbon belongs nowhere near a Manhattan. Rye is the correct whiskey, along with a decent Maraschino cherry.

325 My fellow employees were, almost to a one, made up of spanish only speakers. I would go entire days not speaking a word of english and my spanish sucks, but I took that job because I had to feed my family and pay rent.

Then I got the job I am capable of and made more than 80K a year within a year of me making 27K a year.

Jobs American's won't do? Maybe talk to an American.

326 A series on this, a deep dive, a collection of admissions by the class' regretful members, would be fascinating and useful Ace.

327 The "recycling" job is the only job that I have had that I will directly bash, FUCK THAT "Company" that survived off of chicago's bullshit recycling funding. I felt greater satisfaction in my days work at the industrial laundry place where I was covered in chemicals from the mills, and baby shit from the daycares dirty diapers, making less money, than I did at that place. That place was completely exploitive of the new imigrants who couldn't speak the native language of Chicago. Chicago just threw money at the place because "environment." and the managers were pieces of shit. Mistreating the immigrants.

329 Nood.

330 Well, that was $190 I hadn't planned to spend.

331 Funny thing about the "recycling" place. The spanish speakers LOVED me. My "team" had me, and a woman who was a returnee, who was fluent in english as well as spenish, so we had to women called Maria. I called them "Maria chiquita" that is the Maria who was a spanish only speaker, and "Maria Englase," who was the returnee. When Maria Chiquita asked me why I called the other Maria "Maria Englase." I told her she speaks english." Marira Chiquita said, "WAIT!" and ran away to talk to Maria Englase. That created an educational paradigm for Maria Chiquita.

332 When we would go into work, we would have to take a bus for about 20 minutes from the "parking lot" to the decrepit dead iron mill warehouse, Maria Chiquita would make a point of forcing Me and Maria Englase to sit with here so that Maria Chiquita would listen to me talk, and have Maria Englase translate, and then Maria Chiquita would try to copy my form of speech which is standard midwestern accent.

I asked why she was so excited she said, "More English For ME!" She was so happy that me and Maria Englase could teacher her more. And when she would speak english it sounded like midwestern news reporter.

333 @chatterbox Yeah, I've learned to be more subdued in my old age.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 23, 2022 05:18 PM (ON+MG)

334 It wasn't just the Maria's it was all of the girls just so eager to be American. The dems think people like me, who are very American, so much so that while I live in Australia, my Australian wife makes a point of saying to anyone asking, "He's American" during a new conversation my wife, in pride, says, "He IS America." Meaning I carry my Americanism with me.

Those girls were every bit American as me, they just didn't have the language and THAT I enjoyed about the job. FUCK THE JOB! and FUCK THE MANAGERS and FUCK THE GOVERNMENT, but the joy on Maria Chiquita's face when she said, "More English for me!" was an inspirational moment in my life.

335 And if anyone is curious if I will name names, the name of that shithole exploitive government funded bullshit piece of crap useless, and dangerous fucking business is called "Regency Technologies." in Chicago Illinois.

FUCK THAT PLACE! The only reason it deserves to exist is to grant jobs to beautiful people like the Marias.

336 And now you know were the never Trump POS came from like the Lincoln Project. Trump told them to pack sand when he ran in 2016 and they hate him for it.

337 Rush unwittingly did great harm to conservativism. He cheered on mediocrity - middle of the roaders for years. So sad. I do miss him. He came to his senses the last few years - but still was a shill at times.

338 I had wondered (waaay back, when Walker Stapleton was running for Governor of Colorado against Jared Polis) WHY Stapleton's ads were so awful. He referred to Polis by name, repeatedly, during each ad. This left the impression in viewers' minds that "Jared Polis" was the default name and the name to support. Even a dumb-twit like me knows that commercials DO NOT NAME THE COMPETING PRODUCT; the point is to get the name of the PRODUCT YOU'RE TRYING TO SELL out to the viewer. Whoever was
advising him was SABOTAGING him.
