Thanksgiving Eve Cafe

whitecastlegifyjapan.jpg
Gifu Castle

Dog re-invents the "stick and wheel" game popular with Depression-era children.

Computer generated imagery of a conceptual floating city. Looks like a giant sea turtle.

There's trillions of free power in the colossal churning power of the oceans if we can just figure out a way to convert it to electricity.

We've got a Jeffrey Toobin situation going on here. (I don't think that's real. I think the top right of the screen was added in later by a jokester.)

Tide mills are not new, I think there were a couple in France in the middle ages, there was one built in Eastern Canada too, but it was not a big thing

The one that sounded fantastic was the Panropa project which offered to block the mouth of the Mediterranean at Gibraltar and generate power for North Africa and Europe from the resultant falls.
When the plan was developed in the early 30's it was considered a great idea to lower the sea level of the Med a couple hundred feet or so to expose more shoreline for housing, resorts and agriculture.

For the bike riders, as a reward for their compliance with the Vital Work, will have bicycles which include a chain-driven, reciprocating ass-dildo. When the journey is complete, it will spurt out an ass-soluble solution of lithium salts, to ensure that their continued compliance/reward cadence is not interrupted.

105 The US "EIA" (energy information administration) estimates there is enough wave potential off the US coastlines to supply us about 2/3rds of what we currently generate.

The NOAA says the US coastline is 95,000 miles long (Alaska has a third of it), although that seems like they're measuring along every nook and cranny.

Still, can you imagine even a hundred miles of those contraptions?

110 Just an OT note - a lot of folks gave the commenter nic "Jonah" a lot of shit about being Pollyanna on the Republicans getting to 222 - same as the Dems run roughshod over the Reps right now with committee assignments, etc.

Looks like Jonah is going to be right - AP acknowledges tonight, after saying just two days ago that the Reps highwater mark was going to be 219 - they reluctantly admit tonight that the Reps will get to 220 - but still suggest that Boebert's race is up in the air and that CA 13th is doable for the Dems - neither are - both have been called already. A recount in Boebert's race isn't going to change things, even the Dem challenger conceded, and CA 13th has long been called with no hope for the Dem - AP is just slow walking this because it serves the prior narrative that the Dems held court - they didn't.

And the Gifu area in Japan is fantastic. That photo is great. They close several of the roads in winter. We stayed at a small riokan (traditional inn) there, in November, just before snow-driven road closures, where we had our own hot spring in the room. Fantastic beef dishes. But the yokata (light cotton robe with a belt) for me was pretty small, made me look like a giant.

Someone say Nixon? %flashback music% I have pix of Dad, when state Republican chairman, shaking hands with Ike and Mamie, Dick and Pat. I remember Dad's fury as he watched the "debate" between haggard old black-and-white Nixon and technicolor wide-screen JFK. Dad saw what was happening. As I saw it, Dick won the debate. Sigh. Like it mattered. Dad did not live to see Nixon's eventual election. I've said, if he had lived, Dick's resignation would have killed him.

As a teen, I wasn't a real political person, but I was already able to assess that Nixon was not doing the things that were Right. You know the list.

You use multiple 'sluices'... 10 or more channels where you can shut them down individually, to do maintenance on an ongoing basis. Each sluice using either waterwheels or propeller type devices, that you can take offline at will... then you SCHEDULE doing maintenance... not wait until it breaks.

It's an interesting idea but who would buy it?

Rumor is Apple wants to own a big old Hollyweird movie studio but Disney is as much a giant resort and cruise line business as much as it is a movie studio. Would a tech company necessarily want to get involved in that? And I believe it owns a couple of publishing companies.

Thathalfafrican Mentioned a book by Dennis Prager, titled 'Happiness is a Serious Problem'. Therein is a chapter that discusses the role that gratitude plays in happiness.

Prager points out that if people put as much time into feeling gratitude for what they have, as they do into envy of what others have, most of us would not have time to be unhappy. That's an oversimplification, but largely true.

As an example:

I'm living in a nice two bedroom apartment these days. A step down from the lovely home my wife and I lived in prior to our divorce.

I went to a reunion back in Cleveland earlier this summer. The host was a classmate who has done EXTREMELY WELL. The house and property were sprawling. I couldn't even begin to count the rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.

Good for him. His successes do not diminish the quality of my life. I don't need a palace to live in.

I have no envy for material things. Would it be nice to have the best of everything...I suppose. But I'm happy with the things I do have, and I don't begrudge more successful people their toys.

362 So, I worked with nascent wave power devices for 10 years. Here’s a few facts…

Wave devices have to be built to absorb waves that average 35 kw per linear meter (average in deep water along Calizuela coasts). But they can see power levels exceeding 1000 kw/m. So it has to be built to survive that. That makes for an expensive machine.

Most off shore oil platforms divert wave energy around them. So they are more durable when big storms hit. Wave devices need to be built to be near resonance - which means they are the Pete Townsend guitars of energy production.

wave energy drops off dramatically near shore, so dock based devices like this just don’t see a lot of energy.

Suffice to say, between initial start up costs, ocean based O and M, environmental monitoring — it’s hard to make these things cost effective.

Give me nuclear any day. Go Diablo canyon!!!
