It Begins: Democrats Demand The Federal Government Begin Punishing Elon Musk for Twitter's Noncompliance In The Government-Mandated Nationwide Censorship Regime

The Biden Administration has been demanding that social media companies execute their censorship schemes for years. In the lawsuit that Republican AGs and others have filed against the social media monopolies, the claim will be made that compliance with the government is "voluntary." They'll claim they're not being forced to act as deputy censorship enforcement agents of the government, but are doing so of their own free corporate will.

But all of these companies are, in fact, monopolies, and thus exist in a precarious legal state -- presently tolerated, but open to government harassment and persecution any time they do not follow the government's commands.

As proof of that, Democrats are now demanding that the Federal Trade Commission investigate Elon Musk for "undermining Twitter." By which they mean -- they want him investigated for abandoning the censorship scheme they demanded the old regime imposed.

Is this not an admission that the game here is that the government demands you act as their censors, and if you fail to comply, they begin legal (and extralegal) harassments against you?

The instant pretext for FTC investigation concerns the Blue Check status of the Fake Twitter "elite." They're screaming bloody murder that they're being treated like plebes, and will have to pay $8 for blue check status, and that the plebes can play $8 for this same status.

And they're contriving ways to show why stripping them of their coveted blue ticks Threatens Democracy Itself.

Senator Ed Markey went so far as to participate in a hoax in which he colluded with a Washington Post reported so that that Post reporter would pay for blue tick status and then impersonate him (Ed Markey).

And then, having contrived this case of impersonation, Ed Markey screamed about it and demanded the FTC investigate Musk for permitting the impersonation.

But this is all about Twitter's noncompliance in the censorship regime. They had been a key cog in the government/Ruling Class censorship machine; without Twitter, that machine falls apart.

And they are now letting Musk know that -- like Chuck Schumer warned about offending the Deep State -- we have six ways from Sunday of getting back at you.

Since Democrats cannot stop Musk from transforming Twitter into more of a free speech zone, they want to sic the regulators on him to make him behave.

"In recent weeks, Twitter's new Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, has taken alarming steps that have undermined the integrity and safety of the platform, and announced new features despite clear warnings those changes would be abused for fraud, scams, and dangerous impersonation," the lawmakers said in a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan.

Undermined the "safety" of the platform? Is Twitter going to leave cyberspace and start attacking liberals? It's a thought.

Reuters:

There have been concerns that the upheaval would lead to Twitter failing to abide by a May 2022 settlement with the U.S. regulator in which Twitter agreed to improve its privacy practices and place responsibility on people who held certain positions.

The FTC said last week it was "tracking recent developments at Twitter with deep concern. No CEO or company is above the law, and companies must follow our consent decrees."

The left has its panties in a twist because Musk has very slightly -- slightly -- relaxed the overly aggressive rules governing speech on Twitter. But the problem is that the left doesn't have a stranglehold on the platform anymore. They can no longer go on a collective tirade to get someone canceled.

44 Somewhat off topic, but one thing that's very very strange about FTX: who are all the investors who lost billions and why haven't they been screaming about it?

When the Madoff scam was exposed, we all knew exactly who the defrauded investors were, and in fact many of them practically stormed his Manhattan penthouse the day the scam was revealed.

I continue to believe FTX was nothing more than a money-laundering scheme and had no real "investors." But I can't say I know how it worked. Usually a money laundering scheme involves money coming OUT of the operation. I don't know how the launderers got money out of the FTX scam.

This makes less than no sense. It is none of the FTC's business if an executive grows his business or runs it into the ground, if he does well or fails.

The SEC could have a say in that, but only if it's publicly-traded, which Twitter isn't anymore.

The FTC could go after Twitter for being a monopoly, but is of course choosing *not* to do so.

So what's the justification, and what is their jurisdiction here? I know the real answer, of course, but will admit to being curious about the gymnastics.

The left had control of Twitter for years and used it to suppress free speech and create the narratives they wanted. For the first time in years the place is now open to all speech and it is thriving.

I think it can be an important tool to share information that the media won't. Trump sure as hell made good use of it until they banned him for telling the truth. I'm ok with having a town square were we can tell our side without being censored if it stays that way.

I strongly suspect that a lot of the flagging of content comes from AI analysis of the content, and if the AI makes a decision then a human has to question its conclusions if the decision is appealed. The system is flawless and magical and so why would they or should they question it?

Two recent stories: one, where it was correctly reported that Paul Pelosi opened the door for the cops, and two, when the "Russian" attack on Poland was rapidly debunked (despite Ukraine's furious efforts to use that as an excuse to start World War Three).

Under old Twitter, the Official Narrative would have been amplified for both these stories, and the actual truth would have been deleted or throttled.

The Left can't have a social media outlet that doesn't privilege the Official Narrative.

I wouldn't be surprised if Elon made Trump ask for reinstatement rather than unilaterally unlocking his account. Doubly so after some of Trump's previous snark about never going back to Twitter. Seems like they're both petty enough to have a long stare down over the issue, and it would give Elon some cover with advertisers.

312 Well *another* "special counsel" for Trump, again with literally no basis whatsoever, is sort of perfect for what the country has become. While America's historically most clownishly corrupt WH family gets .... barely any "investigation" whatsoever.

What will the august figures of the GOP have to say at this Third World farce ratcheting down another big notch? With the "leadership" freshly re-elected after their disastrous mid-term failure (including active sabotage by them), would seem the mediocre midgets of the GOP will reprise their 2017-2019 performance. Enjoy!

it's a limited number of pieces of nothing.

So, you get what you pay for.

nBCC (naturalfake Brand Crypto Currency), on the other hand is composed of 100% Pure Getrichium in combination with All-Natural Hawtgirlfriendon.

The clear choice is nBCC.

HEY! You're stepping into my sca... uh...enterprise!

But I am willing to buy nBCCs with tokens representing a fractional value of the yet unnamed crypto that I am mining from the third root of every seventh prime number as long as it is conducted at the exchange I've built in META. I can certify most of them with a thumbs up emoji. Don't worry, they are backed up by valuable Inebriated Wallaby NFTs.

393 Same sex partnerships are an imitation of marriage, but it is not marriage. It must be consummated, which is impossible without both sexes, otherwise, it's not a marriage (one reason for an annulment). Too bad the obvious needs to be stated.

394 I wish Musk would become John Galt. Shut every one of his businesses down and tell DC to fuck off. SpaceX gone, Tesla gone, Twitter gone.

National strike. Trump could have called for one after The Steal. Musk might have as much cachet now, at least among those who still are paying attention.

Twas always in the cards as Zero Interest Rate Program benefited the techlords and conglomerate builders in media by the frantic search for yields. Return to normal interest rates put paid to a lot of speculative ventures in 2000 and now is hurting a lot of tech firm stock prices as they actually have to account for profits and losses instead of the pumped up valuations by momentum players.

As the stock options become ordinary, the mature firm has a lot harder time holding on to talent unless they pay them the regular way so labor costs climb.

The outlook is even worse for media companies as a surplus of options and woke idiocy plus spending on them is optional. Media companies, unlike most of the mature tech companies, also have engorged themselves with debt. Leveraging works on the upside of cheap interest rates but is a bitch on the downside.

399 Funny how Republicans are so adverse to "regulating Big Tech" but the Democrats' first instinct is to not only regulate Twitter but try to shut it down entirely. But keep working with our good friends across the aisle, Republican leadership. They have nothing but respect for all of you.
