Home Sweet Home?

The US has a housing shortage problem. We also have a plastic waste problem. What if we could solve both these problems simultaneously with an unexpected two birds/one stone innovation? If you’ve ever longed to live in a small house made out of 100,000 recycled plastic water bottles, your lucky day is just around the corner.

If, like most of us, living in a water-bottle house isn’t on your list of life goals, but this still sounds like an intriguing idea, bear with me.

3D printed houses can’t quite be called “commonplace” yet, but they’re growing in popularity and springing up everywhere from New York to Virginia, California to Texas and in between. If putting down layers of cement wasn’t innovative enough, a company called Azure is making good use of the material that’s both a boon to our consumer society and the bane of our (and the planet’s) existence: plastic.

Los Angeles-based Azure Printed Homes was founded by entrepreneurs Ross Maguire and Gene Eidelman, who believe they can build homes 70 percent faster, at a cost 20 to 30 percent less expensive than traditional construction methods—and far more sustainably to boot.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Looks like she'll be getting a lot of attention on her way to her new home.

A woman who previously made headlines for claiming she was arrested for being too "good-looking" is now accused of killing her own mother.

Hend Bustami, 28, was arrested in Barstow, California, by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers at around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday (October 26), the department confirmed to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Bustami's 62-year-old mother, who wasn't identified by Metro Police or the Clark County Coroner's Office, is reported to have suffered "multiple deep lacerations" during an incident at a home on June Flower Drive shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Metro Lt. Dave Valenta told the newspaper.

The things I learn while preparing an ONT. I thought I would share with you.

Stories From History That Are Almost Too Absurd To Believe, But Really Happened

Hindsight is usually 20/20, but not everything in history can be easily explained. In fact, the human past is littered with unbelievable moments that actually happened, even though they sound improbable and unlikely.

These absurd stories from history - like historical stories we hadn't heard before - demonstrate that truth really is stranger than fiction.

An Ex-Nazi Cult Leader Faked The Assassination Of Santa Claus In Front Of A Group Of Children

In 1961, Paul Schäfer, who participated in WWII as a Nazi, founded Colonia Dignidad in Chile. Technically a commune, Colonia Dignidad was in reality a 300-person Germanic cult led by Schäfer. Augusto Pinochet even used Colonia Dignidad as a secret prison during his rule.

The commune was also the site of cruel acts, with many accusing Schäfer of sexually abusing children.

One of the strangest moments that occurred there took place when he arranged for one of his followers to pretend to be Santa Claus so Schäfer could mock-execute him in front of some children. Schäfer wanted to terrorize the children so that they would be loyal and subservient to him.

(Colonia Dignidad changed its name to Villa Baviera in 1991 and is now a tourist site with a hotel.)

Woman Busted In Domestic Fight Over Sex Toy
Police: Boyfried was battered after seeking adult item's return

NOVEMBER 1--A dispute over possession of a sex toy turned violent early Saturday and resulted in the arrest of a Florida Woman for battering her boyfriend, according to court records.

Responding to a “domestic violence situation” at a home in Fort Pierce, cops interviewed the male victim who said that he and Chelsea White, 34, were “having a verbal argument over a handbag and a sex toy” he owned.

“As the argument progressed, the victim asked White to return the sex toy to him because he owned it,” police reported. However, “White refused to give the sex toy back to the victim.”

There is going to be another full lunar eclipse the morning of Nov. 8th. This will be the first ever lunar eclipse on an election day.

I take that as a sign. Lunar eclipses are idiotically called "blood moons" by the hype machine, and November's full Moon is the Beaver Moon (these names come from old Injun lore).

So Election Day will begin with a Bloody Beaver Moon. That's a hell of a sign.

It's Trump - he destroys people who get in the way of something he really wants. That's been a character flaw we've always known. It's probably part of why he struggled to bring in good people - a lot of friends of people he burnt bridges with were probably warned off...

That said, if it's Trump, I have his back. But I'd rather have some sanctimony if I could...

90 The takeover of Twitter is about to become a lot more amusing.

Apparently some Twitter employees were demanding payments of up to $15,000 if you wanted a blue checkmark.

Twitter employees were selling verification for upwards of $15,000. For certain accounts, mine included, they would refuse to verify you through the standard application and then privately offer to verify you for $$ behind the scenes.

Investigation needed.

You're not mistaken, the only thing we've heard is 5th hand comments from people who heard someone say they heard that he sounded like it appeared he wasn't going to run.

Again, this is all infuriating and disappointing, but then again, I'm a Republican and this kinda crap is par for the course.

Why should he? Even at the most basic level, he can raise for more campaign money by keeping quiet than by running his mouth off. It suggests he has some fire control discipline over his mouth that has always eluded Trump.

The Moscow Times had an interesting article - Putin is turning over more and more authority to the one group of Russian government officials that have done well during the war - the economic administrators who have kept the Russian economy in better shape than the Western European economies.

In particular, they are now in charge of military production and keeping the troops supplied, so I wouldn't bet on continued incompetence.

Putin's heart may be with the siloviki (the intelligence community), but he's noticed who's succeeded and who's failed in their jobs thus far.

America wanted to move on to a house in the suburbs, A nice car in the driveway, and an annual traveling vacation -- all on one man's take home pay. But looking back, I remember a solidity to that life in the 'burbs. We were safe, we were comfortable, and we were pretty sure we knew what would happen tomorrow. People seemed to stay in one place longer than they do now. Community institutions, such as the VFW and the Masons, were firmly entrenched. 266 I do think the time is past when Dems could have indicted Trump. That was Letitia James' job, and she failed - miserably! Just a lame ass lawsuit instead (and one that is full of huge wholes)

Once Trump announces his run (#2 weeks) than any indictment will look obviously political. Dems needed to do it before these midterms. They blew it.

267 That 'almost forgotten' story of Jefferson and Adams dying on the same day, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration. The story would always mention how Adams said on his deathbed something about Jefferson still living; Jefferson had died earlier that day but communication being what it was back then . . . . But the thing that gets me is what is never mentioned. When touring Monticello many, many moons ago, the guide related that story, but stated a detail that is always missing from the story today. Adams and Jefferson hated each other. The dying Adams said Jefferson still lives because he was pissed Jefferson supposedly lived longer than himself.

The Founding Fathers weren't necessarily Founding Friends.

381 Where's the granular documented detail on how the russkis can't keep their troops in the field supplied? Where has that occurred and led to any change in the lines or anything else? Just curious. Watching things on/off somewhat closely, haven't seen anything material to the scoreboard so far.

Possibly having only one entree choice in the hot line at the DFAC might amount to a supply crisis for the US (kidding!), but we're talking russkis (and ukes) here. Both are hardy, both are used to less opulent material circumstances than any of us.

Pretty static right now, and for some time. Some General Mud involved, but more than that. Meanwhile it seems the Russians are dipping a bit into their Kursk 1943 script, with layered obstacles/minefields to shape the battlefield. Especially in the south, terrain and water features provide lots of "synergy" for the engineers.

And fundamental asymmetry of objectives remains.

The GOP (nor any other entity nominally representing an "opposition") rarely even bothers to dispute, much less act against, the various idiotic mythologies, jihads, and poisons degrading the country. 435 423, Mr Gaga, read a book on primers by a long time distance shooter. Basically, a lot of things happen in a very short time when the primer touches off. In most bottleneck cartridges with more than something like the 22 hornet, the primer causes a slug column if unburnt powder to directly hit the base of the bullet. Gentle shoulders on a cartridge and uneven bullet tension on a short neck cartridge leads to inaccurate shooting. So a generous neck, sharper shoulders, and good bullet tension leads to a more generally accurate cartridge

I found that, fed with 17 volts DC, they ran at between 190 and 240 mA, and were stable at that current, and very bright. Increasing the voltage made them brighter, but the current began to run away, and would start to creep up without any further change in voltage. That's actually a bug in the programming of these "atomic clock" that read the time signal from Ft. Collins (WWVB). There are two DST bits in that signal. One bit indicates "DST status is changing today". That signal flips at 0:00 Zulu on the day of the change.

The other bit flips 24 hours later. Buggy implementations will switch the time immediately upon noticing that "heads up" bit flip.

At 5mA ea, that sounds about right. There's no reason not to use a simple voltage regulator. I mean, if one or more were to short, then the others (with a current regulator) would receive elevated current. So, coin toss. A simple adjustable voltage regulator would do it. Another consideration is *what* voltage is the supply going to be. Put a 200 mA fuse in series.

And we laugh.

It's always AOP.

478 At 5mA ea, that sounds about right.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at November 06, 2022 12:34 AM (vILiQ)

These strips are in a series-parallel arrangement, and it seems that circa 200 mA per strip is about the sweet spot. They barely illuminate at 15 volts. 20 volts pegs out the meter on the power supply. I have seen a couple of current regulator circuits that use IC voltage regulators as their active element.

If the logic is correct, you should see it change exactly at 2 AM, jumping back to 1 AM.

There are two DST bits, at positions 57 and 58. 00 is standard time in effect. On the day of the change to DST, it becomes 10. 24 hours later, it's 11. Then like today, it will go to 01, then back to 00.

Your watch will note that 01, and say, aha, I should switch back at 2AM local time. The buggy versions just jump immediately on noticing that first bit flip.

Well, sure...but if any of them were to open, then the current supplied by the regulator would remain the same. Call it 200mA/N. So, if N decreases (LED opens) then the current per remaining LED's will increase, assuming that ONLY current is regulated. OTOH, if one opens, but the voltage is constrained to 15V (only V regulator), nothing changes. Whichever, fuse.

499
That prompted me to look up the V-I characteristics of LEDs. Current will tend to runaway, but they do not have a negative differential resistance property, which is what really leads to a runaway.

Electric arcs and other things have such a characteristic. The more energy dumped in, the less the resistance becomes, and boom, it tends to become a short circuit. Fluorescent lights, arc lamps, and such all have this. That's why a ballast, to limit current is needed.

Some diodes, tunneling in particular, do possess that behavior as well.

That was an epic NLCS. I remember watching them all on our tiny 13" color tv in Dover, DE. Every game but one going into extras. Down by 3 late in Game 5, Trillo's triple to take the lead, only to watch them fail to hold it in the bottom of that same inning, Then in the 10th, the 2-out double from Maddox to score Unser for the game winning run. Then on to the Series to win it all.

I set it back early. I was impressed. It was just about only 3 s off from UTC after a year. That's pretty damned good.

I also got a Casio G-Shock "Atomic watch". It's local time-keeping is nowhere near that accuracy. It will get off by a few seconds in a few weeks, if it doesn't sync. I am looking at my NTP settings for Windows here. I messed with some shit, and I've forgotten exactly what they do. However, I'm using three time servers, time.nist.gov, time.goggle.com, and pool.ntp.org. I put custom settings so as not to bother time.nist.gov too much. That's sort of sanity check thing. My machine will poll them once ever 8092s.

It varies on the fly, actually. You set a maximum rate, but once your clock settles in, it will ping only as much as it thinks it needs to.

Right now, it is only pinging the NTP pool at once every 2048 s.

You can't change it from the GUI, has to be the command line. The command for doing this is "w32tm", running as administrator.

You can also change things via Group Policy, but that is disabled in the Home versions. Registry editor is the only way there.

When I was young, I'd remember everything new I learned. Not any more. Damned if I forgotten just about everything I did. Would have to look it all up again.

Time.windows.com is crap. It's only Stratum 3. Pool.ntp.org will give you a good Stratum 2 usually.

Look up the NTP configurations for Linux, it will go into a lot of detail on this, which you can take back to tweating W32tm on windows.

Here's the command to add multiple NTP servers to Windows. Open a command prompt as adminstrator and issue this:

w32tm /config /update /manualpeerlist:"time.nist.gov time.google.com pool.ntp.org" . Quotes much be used for multiple. Then type:
w32tm /resync. Then type w32tm /query /peers /verbose

You should see a bunch of info for all three NTP servers.

565 >> Stratum: 0 (unspecified)" -- Is this bad?

Is this from the pool.ntp.org server that it picked up? You see both nist.gov and time.goggle as Stratum 1.

Stratum 0 means the server didn't know or wouldn't tell what stratum it was. The pool.ntp.org thing just gives you a random server participating in the pool.

I won't argue with you. No such thing as too paranoid, this day and time. But that said, I see no harm in opening up the NTP port. You're behind a router, right, so it shouldn't let any unsolicited traffic come in at that NTP port at random, only stuff initiated on the client side.

All the clocks in this house are now set and to within 1s of UTC.

The AC powered clocks that count cycles will maintain that accuracy over the long term. The grid is very good at long term time accuracy. In the short term, it will vary, but they keep the long term cycle counts in sync with UTC very well.
