NYT/Sienna Poll: Republicans Gain On Democrats in Closing Weeks; Independent Women Shift MASSIVELY to the GOP
Aww, you had to soften the blow. But a NYT poll showing Republicans ahead means you're in huge trouble. Important to note: Republicans lag in national polls, and do much better in polls in competitive districts. That is, Democrats are overrepresented in non-competitive districts and underrepresented in competitive districts actually in play. So any kind of national lead is a bigger lead in competitive districts -- nevermind the leftwing propaganda media constantly undercounting Republican voters, whether through malice, incompetence, or a characteristically toxic Regime Mix of the malice and incompetence.
Republicans enter the final weeks of the contest for control of Congress with a narrow but distinct advantage as the economy and inflation have surged as the dominant concerns, giving the party momentum to take back power from Democrats in next month's midterm elections, a New York Times/Siena College poll has found. The poll shows that 49% of likely voters said they planned to vote for a Republican on Nov. 8 to represent them in Congress, compared with 45% who planned to vote for a Democrat. The result represents an improvement for Republicans since September, when Democrats held a 1-point edge among likely voters in the last Times/Siena poll. (The October poll's unrounded margin is closer to 3 points, not the 4 points that the rounded figures imply.)
Democrats lead on some issues -- namely, the issues the public doesn't prioritize highly.
With inflation unrelenting and the stock market steadily on the decline, the share of likely voters who said economic concerns were the most important issues facing America has leaped since July, to 44% from 36% -- far higher than any other issue. And voters most concerned with the economy favored Republicans overwhelmingly, by more than a 2-1 margin. Both Democrats and Republicans have largely coalesced behind their own party's congressional candidates. But the poll showed that Republicans opened up a 10-percentage-point lead among crucial independent voters, compared with a 3-point edge for Democrats in September, as undecided voters moved toward Republicans.
A Harvard-HarrisX poll just demonstrated how much of an issues advantage Republicans enjoyed. The three issues the public cares about the most are, in order, price increases/inflation, the economy/jobs, and immigration.
While the share of voters focused on guns declined, those who identified abortion as the top issue remained flat, at 5%. There is a sizable gender split on the issue's significance: 9% of women rated it as the top issue compared with just 1% of men.
Republicans made massive gains with independent women in recent weeks as Democrats ramped up their messaging on abortion ahead of the midterm elections. ... Of particular note was a 32 point swing among independent women toward the GOP. In September's iteration of the poll, Democrats boasted a 14 point lead among that demographic, but by October, Republicans held an 18 point advantage. While Democratic officials and progressive commentators had suggested that the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade might lessen the expected electoral blow of the midterms, the swing toward the GOP among independent women -- the group most heavily targeted by Democratic strategists -- suggests that their focus on abortion might be to their own detriment. In a TV segment last month, Republican operative Matt Gorman was rebuked by his fellow panelists for suggesting that abortion "is not in the top four of issues." Yamiche Alcindor of PBS and NBC insisted that on the campaign trail "abortion comes up 90 percent of the time" when she speaks with voters. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat and former senator who lost her re-election bid in 2016, shouted over other guests to declare "I hope Matt keeps saying that everywhere he goes -- that abortion isn't really an issue here in this election. I think it is exactly what infuriates women when they hear that."

According to a study conducted by AdImpact, Democrats spent 73 million on messaging ads about abortion in September, which is "about a third of all Democratic television ad spending," per NPR.

Will it make a difference? I do think its a slight headwind, mainly because Republicans cant seem to get unified on a single message. Here in AZ, they bungled passing a state law to address it.
But I do think much of the same people who really care about abortion were already voting that way regardless.

I think it would have been bigger had
A) Roe vs Wade not been overturned
B) Trump had made better endorsements in these Senate races.
It's going to be a bad night for Democrats, but it could have been an Red Tsunami had a few things come out differently.
We'll see what happens in the Senate, but that is where I have the most pessimism.

I think in part because they believe (and probably rightly so) that a huge GOP swing will not slow down their progress. The only branch that matters to them (and probably rightly so) is the unelected 4th branch that actually controls everything. So why be concerned. Let the GOP and their base have their victory, but progress will march on. Maybe just a bit slower than we hoped. Until the GOP actually shows some signs of reversal, they have every reason to not fear a Red wave. The good news is I think we are sending better Republicans. The bad news is there are still a bunch of bad ones.

It's also why CA wants to be earlier in the primary calendar. They know that they've hit the ceiling in terms of their effect on national politics, and with them potentially in the start of losing representation in Congress, it's one of the only avenues they have to actually increasing their influence anymore. They did lose one seat in the 2020 census, and they know they should have lost more.
If they can be first, then they can get someone like Newsom through the primaries easily. Having to send him out to interact with the hayseeds in Iowa is going to kill his candidacy like it killed Kamala's.

I've long thought that "independents" were a myth. Maybe at one time they existed, but the country has been too polarized for too long for any material number of people to still waffle on GOP vs Dem. I think it's fashionable to identify as "independent" to try to muffle the stench of party affiliation. So you get a lot of voters pretending they have no party bias or affiliation.

They picked up Colorado and that will likely be a permanent flip. They picked up New Mexico and will probably keep it. They will likely get to keep Nevada, too. That's 9, 5 and 6 electoral votes, respectively. They lost 1 and picked up 20. +19 is pretty good. Even if CA lost 3 EVs, it's still +17.

Crime is big. I've mentioned quite a few cases here that have occurred in my area. I know there's some homeless camp behind a local grocery store that appears to be the epicenter of the assaults.
I went to the state liquor monopoly store today which is within a couple hundred feet of the camp. Nobody in the store except the clerks. As I'm paying some old disheveled white dude wanders in and gets right in line behind me. Protip: If they're buying just a couple ounce bottle that's what they do - no need to shop. Seconds later a disheveled looking, hoody wearing black dude gets immediately in line behind him.

The biggest group of Americans are fine with banning abortion past the first trimester. A large minority is fine with banning it for EVERYTHING except rape and the life of the mother.

Time will tell. There appear to be black swans all over the place, but the first thing these people do when they take over is pervert elections. That makes shaking things out much, much harder. The political realignment will have no bearing on the political system if the people have no means to put their candidates into place. "We're in charge, the people be damned" is the operating model for the Democrats and for big chunks of the GOP. That will still eventually end, of course, but the mechanisms will be much, much worse than elections.

True independents, the last I checked, were about 5-10 percent of the electorate. Soft partisans about half of each party's coalition. But, often the soft partisans are the ones most affected by negative information about their own leaning party id and often sit out midterms.
Part of that is baked into the cake of two party government (see Downsian analysis of elections). Massive continuous crises and a government that can effectively respond to them can forge a new dominant majority for a time though. This is what is called a realignment. During the 30's, for example, the rural agrarian populist Democrats held key positions in Congress due to seniority and often fought bitterly with new urban Democrats until the 70's where the urbanites won.

Because unlike wildly optimistic predictions of "Democrats out of power for a generation" and the kind of stuff Carville was saying about Republicans not that long ago, voters are fickle and have short memories. They get mad at whoever is in power and throw them out after a while.
Democrats understand this, Republicans do not. Democrats know they'll be back in power in a little while, Republicans fear its their only shot every election. Democrats know they can ram through whatever insane crap they want, no matter how much people hate it, because even if they are punished for it by being thrown out of power... they'll be back in a few election cycles.

They have intentionally cut themselves off from honest data. They don't know what they don't know. And, now they are getting a knowing.
None of them were polling in July/August. All of them were relying upon the media--chock full of "gas is down, economy issue is fading; abortion is still top issue" reporting.

I don't disagree that the polling numbers support a red wave. But with all due respect, polling numbers are just things some randos tell a guy interrupting their dinner. It's speculation. I trust things that have already happened. And what already happened is a blatant, in-your-face steal of the presidency, at least three Senate seats, at least one governorship, and dozens of House seats. Not necessarily. The politics of the Dems is based on the big cities that they rule but the economy, crime, education, transportation, etc. affect the majority of the electorate. Essentially, we have a Uniparty elite that more or less believe in the same things--these are the staffers, donors, and activists that have been miseducated in college. It is more likely we end up getting a Chavez or a Pinochet simply to strike down the corrupt oligarchy than a revolution. Coups are never popular for long.

In reality she apparently has had several dilation and curettage (D & C) procedures, not because of pregnancy, but because of a medical condition that caused abnormal uterine bleeding. You're ignoring that the environment in which that happened was pandemic-justified emergency decrees that are almost everywhere no longer in place.
You're also looking past the fact that those elections were stolen in a handful of big cities. It's hard to steal hundreds of congressional districts, especially since redistricting.
Put simply, dumping 200,000 ballots in Detroit is a lot easier than holding Congress against a national wave.

Right. They cannot really afford to pay for and man a cheat in every congressional election across the country. Its just not viable. But they can do so in key elections in specific areas, targeted carefully to ensure keeping the Senate (or effectively so, like in 2020), and keeping the most hated candidates out of office.

Social sciences in general always deal with uncertain information and bad data. However, it is always able to be analyzed probabilistically using even biased sources. History, candidate information (you can rate candidates on whether they are a 'good' candidate or not pretty well), and other information can play a part. Essentially, the Dems are limited in cheat to whatever the registered voter base is and very liable to challenged if exceeding that in votes other than a few precincts in those urban areas. So, you can actually do the math to determine whether a candidate in PA for example can 'beat the cheat'.

Put simply, dumping 200,000 ballots in Detroit is a lot easier than holding Congress against a national wave.

My take is the GOPe let 2020 go. I also assert that there was a fundraising crisis in late January 2021. Mitch went from "Trump is dead" to "Trump has a place in the party, of course, why would you ask me that?" over the course of about a week.
So, Trump essentially made it known that he was going to control the money as much as he possibly could. He was going to fundraise himself and do everything he could to make is so that the RNC couldn't use his name without permission.
That changed how the GOPe and RNC approached elections from a legal perspective. They fought in VA like they refused to fight anywhere in 2020. They put up token resistance in 2020, but 2021 was an actual fight. I think it'll fight more like 2021 than 2020 in 2022.

What you are seeing is that the Dem Party, despite its rhetoric, is the insider party and as such reflects the interest of party donors and activists--which are those of the college class. The GOPe dinosaurs, by and large, as Ace has shown, want the approval of those insiders and hate populists with a passion. The newer GOP members are turning away from corporations and toward constituents and this risks the entire grifter structure of GOPe incorporated--the campaign staff, professional party types, and well heeled donors. Philly is always politically interesting. Shapiro will be a big factor, as he is statewide. Then there's Johnny Doc, the Philly powerhouse, with federal charges against him. His lawyers, from Scalon's (she represents PA's 5th District) husband's law firm, have - reportedly - asked to quit the case. And then there's his brother Kevin, a Democratic Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice, but with little to nothing thus far that may be hinky & brother associated.
Guess we'll see.

The down market is more likely to affect what Zuck is doing. He has lost paper worth recently more than a lot of billionaires whole fortunes. Fakebook is also under a two way pincer attack from Apple and Google in ad dollars--that is likely to accelerate during economic downturn and scarcer corporate ad spending. Plus, the Metaverse right now is proving to be Second Life redux and a huge money sink for Meta.

Most people are retrospective voters that punish the in party rather than prospective voters believing what a party pushes out. The 1980 slogan for the GOP in Congress was 'Had Enough' and a Tip O'Neill lookalike running a car out of gas ad. GOP gained twelve Senate seats to take the majority and over 20-25 seats in the House.

That was surely a disaster, but most of that was a pro-Reagan anti-Carter coattail effect. It flushed out a lot of crap - one of my college roommates had been a senate Page for a bit and was exulting in the heads being collected - but the next big shift in Congressional politics was the South deserting the Dems because of liberalism.
